I had an OHV engine in one of my cars once, with it's fun overrun, put it in gear and drop the clutch to switch it off. And the good old CVH engines Ford used to use, they were awesome because they were so easy to strip and rebuild. I had one of the rockers snap clean in half once, how rare must that be.

How my diesel tech teacher taught us to do a Valve adjustment was by giving us the shortest flat head he had and then he'd have us put the correct feeler gauge in and told us to take the flat head with your index, middle finger, and thumb and tighten it really tight to see what it felt like and then loosen it until it was too loose and then basically snap your fingers. Have been doin it ever since and I've never had a bad adjustment.

I worked at a dealership some years ago for a short time in parts/service. One of the mechanics there had a highly modified XR650R. He'd put a bigger carb on it with a "pumper" feature that fed the engine with everything he wanted when whacking the throttle. He'd also dyno tuned it. I don't know what horsepower it was putting out but it was pretty stupid quick and the loud pipe sounded amazing under heavy throttle.
