Great Leadership Is a Network, Not a Hierarchy | Gitte Frederiksen | TED

  • What if leadership at work wasn't for a select few, but rather shared among many? Management consultant Gitte Frederiksen gives us the recipe for "distributed leadership" -- dynamic, multi-dimensional networks of leaders that tap into everyone's knowledge and creativity -- and shows how it allows teams to do more and do it better.

@7:43 Kindness is the hardest part. People sometimes make it their jobs to be cruel and to pay the cruelty forward that was shown to them, thinking it’s a right of passage or necessary to sustain their business model.

Your speeching is very interesting for me.
When I listening to it, idea is popping up!!
And I feel a respect to you.
Because your story and my thought is similar. Sometimes I imagine a new society. It is like your thought. Although the new society you said is realised in a our society. it is a very small. This is a problem.
I wanted the society you said. I believed the society we loved appears soon!
Finally, I'm very pleased to watch your video.
    Thank you for reading♡

Recently promoted to manager at work and it's my *first managerial role.* This is helpful and a different way of seeing things, thank you.

The best managers I ever worked for did this technique without even knowing it. They allowed each individual on the team to be a leader and thus the team excelled as a whole. It was amazing. The sad part was when that manager was moved to a new role and the new manager didn't allow us to keep working in the same manner. Very quickly, each member either left the company or figured out how to transfer from the project.

@@jasonkimellis8793 As someone who has experienced the positive impact of a manager who fostered an environment in which team members were able to take on leadership roles, I understand the value of this approach. It was amazing to see how our team excelled as a whole when we were given the opportunity to be leaders. However, I recognize that this dynamic changed when the original manager was moved to a new role and the new manager did not adopt the same approach. This has been frustrating for me and my team members, who are used to having a certain level of autonomy and responsibility.
I want to be mindful of my own role and the impact I have on the team, and I hope to approach this situation with humility. If I find myself in a similar situation in the future, I will try to communicate my concerns to the new manager and see if there is a way to maintain the same level of autonomy and responsibility that we had previously. I will also try to discuss the issue with my team members and see if there are ways that we can work together to maintain a positive and productive team dynamic. Overall, I believe it's important to find the right balance of support and autonomy for team members in order to foster effective leadership and management.

absolute class ! I dont think this appreciated or valued as much as it sould be, and also the people sitting on information about improvements thinking outside the box do not get the same acknowledge as the people on top. Even some times the people that come up with a new perspective also get "dragged" down because of their new way of thinking. i got sacked because i was thinking outside the box and still taking care of customer experience + sorting out their issues wit the so called on boarding. you should come to Norway and teach us about ur thoughts and explain in a simple way why leaders and Co Workers should listen to others input.

This is resonant of collective community and cultures who run small businesses. Its when organisation structures get large and therefore departmentalised. Current individualised cultures are "what's in it for me?" where collective thinking is about the network - ubuntu.

This might be so but I feel that many people who choose to reach for leadership roles are doing so for the salary increase or the title/status. They are not interested in being leaders and in some cases do harm to a work environment and to the people who report to them. I've worked under managers who seemed motivated by these and I saw unethical behaviour such as favouritism and engaging in relationships with women who reported to them.

Well said... Idk what the best case scenario makes evident. But, I've learned through numerous personal experiences that most who get these roles tend to be from a background that is abundant with privilege & opportunity. So, when there finally able to "lead". More often then not the subject lacks the empathy and relatability that is required to be a great leader. There is a difference between a successful leader and a great, or true leader...

going from full hierarchy to throwing hierarchy completely away seems like a post-modern anti-trend. Why not keep the good parts of hierarchy and get rid of the toxic ones, and add a non-hierarchical network structure to it. It's not all back and white, and using the best of both seems like a better option.

Right. In a hierarchical system, it is almost guaranteed that the people on the “bottom” are not only treated badly, but often they are not even seen as human beings but rather “Human Resources”.

Well said ,so true, agreed with you,
    what i understood is:
Leaders works 4 accuracy excellence ,their goal is beyond the title label or trophy while title orientation ppl stops functioning or remain lack on efficiency as they got success
They r free thinker , n forget about the box(out of the box),
They r the best of the best 'learner' always open to learn something extraordinary they always show themselves as a learner rather then expert (n here the growth LL stop)that's the main quality of true leader
They listen everyone n make own decisions any difficult circumstances ,also gives chance to other ppl n encourage them whenever they need ,.
Problem solver mindset ,what is the actual problem (Not by hearing outside rumor, they go by themselves 4 analyze real issue, n take proper actions )? how to overcome the challenges ?
They Never hesitate to show their agree/ disagree rather pick fight or argument they firmly stand with their belief/ decision
They never pass on work pressure to others members n make them feels easy, comfortable in hard situations,
As u said **They work n believe in to make others leaders not followers **(u took shine of this sessions by saying this line 🎩).
They change strategy to achieve their goal but not Goal
*Seriously beautiful topics I lov it 👌
Believe in rewards not in awards (but awards also acceptable :) 😄
*This platform is doing tremendous job in such time ,people can learn something valuable life skills which v never learnt in acamedic/educational system 🤟👌'leaders without Label'
