Knowing the definition to addiction does not help you understand addictions. To truly understand addictions, you will need to learn what it is that the addicts finds or hopes to find from the drink, the drug, or the addictive behavior.
In this talk we will provide information that will assist you to gain a deeper understanding of addictions and the experience of those addicted. We will explore the underlying causes of addiction, discuss the correlation of psychological/emotional/physical pain to substance use, and highlight the importance of compassion in the recovery process.
The talk will conclude with some tips for increasing your understanding of addictions and your connection to those who may be experiencing addictions in their lives.
We encourage you to participate in your own recovery by writing questions, providing feedback, or asking questions.
Our hope is that this video helped you gain a deeper understanding of addictions and increased your compassion towards those addicted.
The framework of this talk and many of the points made in this video were inspired by the teachings of the great Dr. Gabor Mate - who is one of the leading experts in the field of addiction medicine. It is highly recommended that you read his book "In the realm of hungry ghosts, close encounters with addictions."
