The Twelve Core Psychological Characteristics of Olympians
The 2024 Olympics hosted in France are 6 days away. This talk will highlight and celebrate the psychological characteristics that these athletes posses, and how the implementation of these characteristics could be beneficial in your life and in your recovery.
The Twelve Core Psychological Characteristics of Olympians that are discussed in todays live stream are the following:
1. The ability to cope with and control anxiety. This includes somatic trait anxiety (i.e., the physical symptoms of anxiety, like butterflies in one’s stomach), worry, concentration disruptions, and overall anxiety.
2. Confidence. This concerns the extent to which an athlete is confident and positively motivated, consistently gives their all during practices and games, and works assiduously to improve his or her skills.
3. Mental toughness. This pertains to resilience, perseverance, and the ability to successfully cope with adversity.
4. Sport intelligence. This refers to the ability to analyze, being innovative in relation to one's sport technique, being a student of the sport, making sound decisions, understanding how elite sport works, and being a quick study.
5. The ability to focus and block out distractions. This entails the ability to automatize, to focus on what you can control, and to focus and not be easily distracted.
6. Competitiveness. This broke down into three themes: having a killer instinct, being intense (e.g., having an aggressive and go for it attitude), and being competitive (e.g., being a fighter and never giving up).
7. Having a hard-work ethic. Athletes reported being motivated, driven, a hard worker, and having a strong work ethic.
8. The ability to set and achieve goals. These Olympians showed a greater capacity to set and work toward specific performance goals, plan and mentally prepare for games, and has a clear strategy to perform their best.
9. Coachability. This encompasses whether an athlete is open to and learns from instruction, and accepts constructive criticism without taking it personally and becoming upset.
10. Hopefulness. As it was defined in this study, having hope meant having a signature way of setting, seeking out, and achieving goals.
11. Optimism. Optimism is a generally stable trait in which people by and large feel that positive things will happen. Optimistic people also confront challenges with confidence and persistence.
12. Perfectionism. There are two kinds of perfectionism, maladaptive and adaptive, with both types being known for setting high personal standards and exhibiting a strong preference for organization. Yet while maladaptive perfectionism is associated with being overly concerned with making mistakes, being criticized, and self-doubt, adaptive perfectionism-the kind these Olympians possess-is positively linked with achievement.

Thank you for this talk. I ended up crying during part of it but it only made me realize that I have been beating myself up a lot over things in the past. It's hard not to, but you're right I need to reframe things because those things happened. Regardless of who was to blame, there's nothing that can be done now. Instead of hurting over how it could have been if I didn't do this or because I had done that, how can I make sure that never happens again, and how to get my life back to the way it is supposed to be. I really appreciate these talks you do. I know they have made such a difference in my life and how I approach things and how much I've grown. You really are making a big impact on people's quality of life. ❤

For some reason .... When the so called existential crisis was announced with regard for resonance I was intrepid. Not fearful but I was hell bent not to participate. The circumstance was lengthy and as time passed I recognized self destructive behavior. .I don't have a future if I cannot retrieve the Teresa I thought I would always be..

Hi Param . I’m from South Africa.. I have a 39 year old son who is currently in rehab for a 1 year 2 months, he has been diagnosed with ADD since he was little.. he’s now 39.. I have had contact for the 1st time with him for about 15 mins,, he’s had no meds at all for the whole time.. but after meeting him I can see that he is depressed and looks spaced out without his meds ..the rehab doesn’t allow any meds . But my gut feel tells me that he needs his meds in order to cope with being sober and drug free in a healthy manner. It is not drug induced . He’s struggling to take instructions and concentrate and with the result he has anger issues and is isolating . Pls help me make some decisions…thank u

Parham, Thank you for covering this topic. I am so sorry for your loss. Your timing for this discussion is impeccable, as I am literally emersed in both of these forms of loss. My ex-husband and father of my children (we were married 15 years) passed away after a lifetime battle of medical issues at the end of March. On May 5th my father who is also my neighbor and best friend went to the airport to pick up my aunt. He called me to tell me her plane was delayed and after greeting her he went to get his truck and a witness said he just collapsed and had no pulse. He was healthy and active. This doesn't seem real even though it is and the way I got notified makes it that much harder to handle. But hearing you talk about this and being able to relate to it helps to much.
