I just bought to from Home Depot cuz they were only 20 bucks and at the beginning of the video I was like noooo!! But I'm glad that I could save them :D
I have a messy monstera as well. But i kinda like the natural "jungle" look. It allows the plant to fill in an open space between my floor lamp and entertainment stand. Meanwhile my other monstera has a single stem with the pole supporting the back. It's growing well. But it is also becoming top heavy... Where as my "messy" monstera has no issues of toppling over
Now THIS was some useful plant content! Not “here are ten over-priced plants you’ll never afford, loser” or “here are two leaves on a wet stick that I bought on Etsy isn’t it amaaaaazing?”. I really appreciate that you scripted yourself and don’t have any verbal clutter. Well-done!
I have watched sooo many videos in monstera houseplants and this is the first time I’ve heard this. This is literally the most easily understandable and useful plant video I’ve ever watched thank you so much
well maybe because anyone thinking about it will just tie in the stem and let the leaves to go towards the light. I have grown1000's of Cheese plants and I have never once though, 'oh, that's the back of the plant', because the leaves will grow towards the light and that makes that the 'front' of the plant no matter which way the stem is pointing. After all what are you looking at? Leaves or stem? Leaves, obviously. Just don't tie in the leaves as well, why would someone do that?
I bought a plant like this at a nursery. Came home watered it down to remove all dirt and so that I could see the roots. Cut it into 2 plants. Planted them seperatly with bamboo pole. They are doing great!
I’m going to do that I’ve been planing to do that for a while now and I’ve been waiting to put in mods poles I wanted to get a different pole but couldn’t find any bamboo
I personally prefer starting from a starter plant. It's true that it till take you several years to get to the "normal" size you see in the store, but it really feels like your own kid. More importantly, you learn a lot about your plant through the process.

They haven’t been doing well and it turns out I planted them backwards with not enough light. Now they have a chance! Thank you so much

I bought a tiny monstera for $8 at the grocery store! She was looking a bit floppy and unhealthy, and all I've done is put her in my nice window, and she is really thriving. Because she is small she doesn't need a pole yet and I turn her every so often. I've gotten one leaf since she's been here and another one is coming in. I'm really looking forward to when she is massive! What a great video!
@@nileshpandey7654 she is wicked!! I need a pole now :) I don't even know how many now leaves since my post, but one is just MASSIVE and it sweats some mornings lol
Turning it isn't so great for the plant though. You'll want the leaves to face the sum, not the back. Of course you want a mote bushy look but then just buy more and put them in one put. Being moved is stress
You are a monstera wizard! We bought a huge, overgrown monstera - I'm talking 7 moss poles in one pot - and your videos have helped us get it under control and it's so much more healthy and organized now. Down to 2 moss poles! Thank you for doing these videos!!

OH MY GOSH! Have just watched 3 of your videos and my monstera (who is starting to venture) has been facing backwards for a year! Am going out to buy a bigger pot and a large plank right now so I can show her off properly to the world. Thanks so so so much!
This video helped me SO MUCH. I bought beautiful monsteras from IKEA and they are sprouting leaves like wild but they're getting wide. I had to do some cutting, but the plants look so much better and I even created extra to gift. Thank you!
So grateful that I found this. I have a Monstera that has tripled in size in just over a year. And though I am a landscape architect, I don't work with Momsteras much because I'm in the desert. I now know how to correct my Monstera's ever expanding waistline, if you will. 😂 It easily has a 4 ft diameter. And don't worry, there are many of us shy kids out here. Thats why my BFF and I are such good friends. She's the extrovert and I'm the wallflower!
Love this video, the vibe, and the channel. I struggled to find this type of information for monstera. After your video and a few hours, my 3yr old monstera turned out to be very I ended up with nine monstera. It's been about a month since they all got their own pots and supports and I haven't lost a single one. I really appreciate it!
Got my 1st monstera yesterday. Kind of shocked about some plants having a front and a back. Never thought about it. Perfect timing to see this! After buying my first monstera yesterday from big box on clearance with some yellow lower leaves, I immediately unpotted and found it was 4 plants, removed the crappy soil, and I'm ready for the next step. On to watch some more of your videos:)
Wow, perfect timing. I'm having the same issue, and judging from the comments, I guess a lot of other people are as well. Thanks so much for your great content!

I started collecting plants when I got pregnant with my baby, she's now two months old and I'm up to 51.. lol, the monstera is FINNALLY here as of today ! Let's pray she does well
bought a super leggy monstera with 5 crispy leafs about 4 months ago. Have had fallen leafs, gnats a plenty and 1 whole new leaf. decided to repot and cut off the tops to propegate. The mother plants are already showing signs of new growth and the cuttings are rooting happily in water. :D I've learned so much about these plants from your channel!
I have been looking for exactly this information for over a year!! I appreciate how you teach, and you've got a loyal new student. Thank you so much ♥️ ♥️ ♥️
Something to consider is that after some time the plants' backs will turn away from the light source (if the light is coming mainly from one direction), making it easier to tie them all together. Even if the lower portions are all facing their own directions, their top portions will eventually sync after some growth.
@@violetmoon2552 3 plants 1 pot from ikea in my case too. If they're still early in development and the root system is small I would consider the repoting. If they're already quite big (which was my case) I'd wait it out until they naturally twist the direction of the light.
Who ever you are… I’m glad I found this video. Simple and factual. No fluff. You just earned my sub and I look forward to watching other videos I didn’t know I needed to watch.
Right? I’ll never look at them the same way again. And of course, most of mine are placed in their pots in a way that doesn’t make great use of the space for future growth. Future me hates present me 😂 I am seriously grateful though to understand it all clearly now. *I didn’t take the time to think out their growth pattern when I was repotting before.
I separated the multiple plants in the pot. I like to put just one plant in the pot. I ended up with multiple pots of monsteras. Sold some, keeping just two. They have become huge!
You’re fantastic! You’ve quickly found your way to the top of the list of my favorite plant persons! I love your enthusiasm and how precise you are with your details. I also find your demonstrations helpful and your sense of humor delightful. Thank you so much.
My pleasure! I’m so glad I came across your posts. I’m a devoted plant parent myself and I welcome all new information and ways of taking care of green babies. So thank you again!
Now, it's gonna be a long comment but I just want to share it with you 😊. Well, I just spent 3 hours repotting my 4-stem monstera after watching all related videos of yours and I must say they are extremely helpful. I started to realize something wrong with my monstera when it kept falling over in ALL directions and the leaves of some stems were getting smaller than the previous ones. After watching your videos and checking my monstera I found the stems' back sides were facing different directions and the pot might be too small. So, I decided to repot it today to save my plant from rootbound and twisting, though it is mid-winter. The plant was extremely rootbound so I couldn't separate the roots of the 4 stems completely. So I just tried to remove the old soil as much as possible to loosen the roots so that the backsides of the stems can be repositioned. I changed the soil mix too since the old one was too tight for the roots to breathe (many thanks to your video on making the soil mix). Now my monstera looks a lot happier and I hope it does feel happier ❤ I never thought that I could repot my monstera that smoothly. Your videos and clear explanations gave me so much knowledge and confidence to do it. Many thanks and keep up the good work!👍👍👍
Just found the channel and I really appreciate the short videos. Very precise, exactly what the title says and no "fill up to 10 minutes time-waste". Thank you! =)
i bought 3 baby monsteras at the store a few months ago. (actually went back 3 days in a row and got one each time because they boosted my serotonin oops.) they’re growing so well and i’m so proud but i can’t help but wonder how big they’re gonna be soon 😂
very helpful video...would not have realized this otherwise. a word of warning/dose of reality presented like this, along with a good demo of what to do is quite refreshing. i appreciate the good info and brevity.
Wow! I had no idea. Yep, I am one that bought at big box store and I think my plant has 4 different stems and going every which way. Summer project coming my way. Thank you!
This was so helpful! Other videos talk about staking but don't go into detail like you did. I feel like I now know where to start to get my monstera under control. Thank you!
I bought a monstera from one of those big box store and it had mealy bugs. Inspect your plants thoroughly before buying. You have one of the best explanations of care for monstera I’ve seen. Well done!
I never knew this about monstera but was wondering why my plant started to drop and didn’t grow properly. Now I know why and I’m hoping I can still “fix” my monstera. Thank you so much!
I germinated 3 monstera deliciosa from seed and am so so so excited to give them the right things to be STARSSS. They're a few months old with 3 leaves each and all are working on the 4th with stakes. thanks for these tips! also loved how you got right into it because man, some of these plant channels have like 5 min long intros for no reason
Thanks to your channel, I was convinced to get a baby monstera del this summer, and man we have been loving it! 5 baby leaves and the new one is it’s biggest yet. It’s going to be fun watching it grow up. Staked her right (moss pole when she’s big enough), and we used your vids as a resource. Didn’t want to buy a big one, especially not from a big box, though this baby came from Canadian Tire… ☺️
@@KillThisPlant yeah, busted. But it came from the same greenhouse that everyone else uses, so I’m ok taking a healthy baby for a few dollars. 80% of our collection still comes from our local sellers. 👊🏾🧔🏾♂️
back two months later after taking nice top cuttings off of my monstera and letting them root in water. I re-watched a bunch of your monstera videos to try to ensure when I repotted them they would thrive. I got three lovely looking pots now, one with one cutting, one with two, and one with three smaller ones (I was curious to see how the small ones would do). I'm already getting ready to take another set of really nice top cuttings to root, and then I think I'll try separating the rest. I'm excited to see how they all do, hope I got it right! Thanks again for these videos :D
Just bought a Monstera plant with moss pole and it looks exactly like what your subscriber sent in in the before pics! Will let my plant rest after the stress of it's travels for a while then try your suggestions, first time plant parent so these videos are a lifesaver!
Thank you for your very informative videos. I have been binge watching today. 🙂 As a person with 10 green thumbs (who manages to somehow kill almost every plant I start caring for), I feel a lot more confident about caring for my plants after watching your videos. I hope that my monstera will now thrive as she deserves to.
I’m so glad I watched this! Just bought my first monstera- from tescos of all places! (Like a British Walmart) and I was feeling jammy as anything getting this big plant for a steal 😎 But something about it looked a little off to me and this is exactly it! Thanks so much for this perfectly timed advice ☺️ With such low light here in Scotland I guess plants like these have to work a bit harder so anything I can do is going to make all the difference. I named my monstera Brian so I’ll have to think of a name for his son if I take a cutting 🤔
I'm still a lil confused. Is it safe to break up the roots of an existing monstera or is taking a cutting the ONLY way? Ideally I'd like to split my shop bought monsteras into separate pots and carry on as is. They've got pretty big leaves already and I'm not in love with the idea of starting fresh.
Splitting up your roots is absolutely an option. However, especially if you have an established plant, splitting up the roots without damaging them can sometimes take an extremely long time. I don't personally seperate roots and I have a hard time suggesting it to others because -it could take a hours depending on the plant -you have to have a certain level of experience to know how much force you can use when seperating roots (what's an acceptable amount damage)
@@KillThisPlant I Can vouch for the part of it taking an extremely long time. I was in the same situation. Had my Ikea bought plant for a year, and it had 5 plants inside. I watched this video yesterday and it all made sense, my plant was about 5 feet wide cause all the growth was facing all posible directions. So…. …since it was beautifully huge already I decided to go through the whole root system and split them all up….took me about an hour 😅 But I’m so glad I did it, also, it felt like quality time with my most beloved plant 💚….now I have 5 new plants and no idea where to put them all 😂
I divided up my Monstera which turned out to be one big one and 4 small ones. I transplanted them into a smaller pot and reduced the size of the big pot I had the big one in. Thanks to you I now understand the front and the back and where to stake properly. The big plant is doing great, the 3 smaller ones are a little limp, but I will be patient and let them grow out of it. The 4th little one is by itself and seems to be ready to give me another leaf. You make it so much easier with your knowledge and charm. :-)
This is very, very helpful -- and I'm relieved that there are actually options and just nobody is thinking it through (including me!). Thank you, keep up with the great videos!
I bought a small monstera plant and it's been sitting at my balcony for a few months now... I was wondering why the new leaves are growing in a strange direction but now i understand the concept of the front and the back of the stem... Glad i chanced upon this video and i appreciate that it was short and straight to the point...
I adopted a lot of plants from a friend that moved, I'm so glad I found this channel because both of my monsters are not growing correctly. I thought they looked weird but didn't know until now, they need some love!
Wow, this is exactly what I needed to see! Thank you for this video. I bought one at Walmart and it’s starting to get huge and horizontal. I’m new to plants and read about staking it but see now that it wouldn’t really work. I have an idea on how maybe I can get it looking good but only because of this! ❤
Lol you're adorable. This video was very informative, everyone wants a monstera delicioso but hardly any of us rookies know how to properly care for them. Thank you! 🪴 🌱 🌿
Thank goodness for TH-cams algorithm. I know there’s another lost Monstera loving soul out there that NEEDS to see this video. Chopping my baby tomorrow and starting fresh because the way she looks right now AINT IT! Thank you!!!!!
Thanks for your content! A nice lady randomly cut me a piece of her Monstera and now I'm a plant mom. I really appreciate these videos because I have no idea what I'm doing
Just stumbled onto your channel, and your funny and charismatic way to teach about plants has made me an instant subscriber! A short video, an easy fix, just perfect! Thanks so much!
I laughed out loud at the shy kid in the corner comment. I love how you explain things, and I’ll be binging your content today. Thanks for explaining it so well
This is exactly the video I’ve been looking for. So excited to see how my newly repotted monstera will grow after following your advice. Thank you for sharing your beautiful plant knowledge with us!
Oh woof mine is all wrong! My husband always complains it’s a wild mess but I love it. I finally cut a couple top leaves off I’m hoping to get a good propagation over the winter. I’ll be replanting correctly this week. Thank youuu!
This video popped up in my recommendations. And now, after checking my Monstera, I know why it hasn't been growing the way I thought it would. Going to re-pot it the right way around this weekend. Thanks :)
I love your videos so much!!! I learn new stuff constantly, I saw some huge monsteras at Lowes and I had no clue that this why they're not great. Thank you!!!!
Wow such great tips. A neighbor back in California gave me a small potted monstera from her plant shop. When I moved cross country I couldn’t fit all of it in my car so I cut a clipping, if you would. It’s been two years and that clipping became two. Both are still in water because I’m so scared to hurt or kill them. They’ve given me a few leaves as well. I’ll go watch your other monstera videos for potting help.
I just bought a monstera on a whim, it's going to be my first plant. Really happy I stumbled on your video, you make amazing content in a short format that's easy to follow. I think my plant from Costco has 3-4 stems all facing outward from the centre but there isn't any space to fit a stake in the centre between them all. I suppose they should be separated to let each stem shine on their own. Excited to look for new cute pots
Omg I actually got my 16" monstera at a local plant store but the intro still smacked me in the face!! LOL Its always been so messy & I didn't know what to do w/ it anymore! Keep struggling w/ moss poles? or propagate? With all the videos out there, I can't believe the growth of the monstera isn't talked about enough. Thank you so much for this informative video!
you're pretty much the only reason I haven't killed all my houseplants 💚 thank you for making your videos super beginner friendly....and funny, I love the humor!
Wow! Nobody talks about this!!! Seriously! It makes so much sense! I repotted my monstera not long ago and she seems doing great with giving new leaves constantly. But i completely repotted wrong way like you explain! I put a stick and tied its body gently without getting leaves stacking up. But i was wondering, as a climber plant how on earth can she do what she is supposed to do?? BECAUSE THEY ARE FACING OPPOSITE DIRECTIONS!! Thanks man!
Finally, a really helpful video!! I kept wondering why my large monstera was growing in all directions - turns out, there were too many stems in opposite directions!
You might just have saved my monstera! I have one like this and couldn't figure out why it would always tip over and why it simply doesn't look as great as the one my neighbor has. This is the very reason! Thank you! You gained a new subscriber, maybe you can stop me from being a serial plant killer 😂
Thank you sir, very well stated. I ordered two small rooted cuttings and I can wait for the growth I just wanted to start out right from the beginning. Your video was very helpful without making me feel as if I would not succeed. Blessings
I have absolutely no idea how TH-cam knew I had a messy monstera, but I'm glad it recommended this video! This was very helpful. Thank you mate!

I am seriously grateful though to understand it all clearly now. *I didn’t take the time to think out their growth pattern when I was repotting before.
If you were happy with the way your plant looked before you watched this, just pretend you didn't watch it 😆
I've separated the roots of my monstera, it's already bouncing back and looking beautiful
@@KillThisPlant 😂
They’re always a work in progress. Your guidance is going to make me love them even more.
I separated the multiple plants in the pot. I like to put just one plant in the pot. I ended up with multiple pots of monsteras. Sold some, keeping just two. They have become huge!
I watch all the time for planteee tips , thank you for keeping my plants alive 😂❤️ all the love and good plant vibes !
Glad you like them!
Thank you for the Superthanks! Youre too kind.
You’re fantastic! You’ve quickly found your way to the top of the list of my favorite plant persons! I love your enthusiasm and how precise you are with your details. I also find your demonstrations helpful and your sense of humor delightful. Thank you so much.
Thank you for watching!
My pleasure! I’m so glad I came across your posts. I’m a devoted plant parent myself and I welcome all new information and ways of taking care of green babies. So thank you again!
Thanks! This was particularly well illustrated, even by your high standards. Your clarity really aids confidence for action :)
Glad you liked it.
I’ve been struggling with getting my massive monstera to climb it’s moss pole instead of my floor and now I know why! Thank you so much for this!!!
Many thanks and keep up the good work!👍👍👍
I am so happy my videos have helped build your confidence and it's great that your plants are doing well!
Well done!
This is such a great video! Informative and detailed without being excessive, and never patronising. Thank you!
I never knew this about monstera but was wondering why my plant started to drop and didn’t grow properly. Now I know why and I’m hoping I can still “fix” my monstera. Thank you so much!
Excellent video. I now need to repot my monster the correct way 😂
I germinated 3 monstera deliciosa from seed and am so so so excited to give them the right things to be STARSSS.
I would totally include CT as a big box store! But I didn't want non Canadian viewers to say "why is this guy buying plants from an auto shop?" 😂
You are a lifesaver...it's as if you were reading my mind...exactly what I needed to know! Thank you!
Glad I could help!
Just bought a Monstera plant with moss pole and it looks exactly like what your subscriber sent in in the before pics! Will let my plant rest after the stress of it's travels for a while then try your suggestions, first time plant parent so these videos are a lifesaver!
Best of luck!
Thanks Lee. It was very helpful! I liked that you clearly identified the front and back. Super information!
Many thanks!!!
This is so mild-mannerd, boring and INFORMATIVE.
Thoroughly enjoyed it.
This is the BEST video I've seen to understand how to stake best up a Monstera, thank you!!
I love how your videos are informative and straight to the point!
I purchased a small, one direction growth Monstera from Cole Gardens in NH. I’m ready to repot and your videos are super informative! Thank you!!!
I’m so glad I watched this!
Just bought my first monstera- from tescos of all places! (Like a British Walmart) and I was feeling jammy as anything getting this big plant for a steal 😎
But something about it looked a little off to me and this is exactly it! Thanks so much for this perfectly timed advice ☺️ With such low light here in Scotland I guess plants like these have to work a bit harder so anything I can do is going to make all the difference.
I named my monstera Brian so I’ll have to think of a name for his son if I take a cutting 🤔
Maybe Craig?
Craig it is! 👌🧡
I shall pronounce it the American way, in your honour 🙏
I named mine Herman Monstera... made three cuttings so far... Eddy Munstera, Lilly Monstera and Grandpa...
DUDE THIS VIDEO MADE MY WEEK! Tons of useful info and your delivery was concise! Monsteras are my favorite plant by a long shot ❤
I don't personally seperate roots and I have a hard time suggesting it to others because
-it could take a hours depending on the plant
-you have to have a certain level of experience to know how much force you can use when seperating roots (what's an acceptable amount damage)
@@KillThisPlant thank you for this!
So….
…since it was beautifully huge already I decided to go through the whole root system and split them all up….took me about an hour 😅
But I’m so glad I did it, also, it felt like quality time with my most beloved plant 💚….now I have 5 new plants and no idea where to put them all 😂
@@chijaruable wow that's so inspiring! Thank you ❤️
This is so true!! I took it apart when it got very large now it's four beautiful plants after two years.
I divided up my Monstera which turned out to be one big one and 4 small ones. I transplanted them into a smaller pot and reduced the size of the big
pot I had the big one in. Thanks to you I now understand the front and the back and where to stake properly. The big plant is doing great, the 3 smaller
ones are a little limp, but I will be patient and let them grow out of it. The 4th little one is by itself and seems to be ready to give me another leaf. You make
it so much easier with your knowledge and charm. :-)
I dig the diagram and the breakdown.
It’s more technical than most others and in an easy to understand way.
I love people like this. So into their zone and so informative.
hey thanks!
Truly the only plant content that matters. Love everything about your channel. Big fan :')
Lol you're adorable. This video was very informative, everyone wants a monstera delicioso but hardly any of us rookies know how to properly care for them. Thank you! 🪴 🌱 🌿
Wow!!!! I love the information!!! No bs and to the point!!!!
Thank goodness for TH-cams algorithm. I know there’s another lost Monstera loving soul out there that NEEDS to see this video. Chopping my baby tomorrow and starting fresh because the way she looks right now AINT IT! Thank you!!!!!
Thanks for your
content! A nice lady randomly cut me a piece of her Monstera and now I'm a plant mom. I really appreciate these videos because I have no idea what I'm doing
I came for the monstera and stayed for you. 😊 I'm in the scrap it and start over phase. Thank you! 🙌
Just stumbled onto your channel, and your funny and charismatic way to teach about plants has made me an instant subscriber! A short video, an easy fix, just perfect! Thanks so much!
Thanks for subscribing. glad it was useful.
I laughed out loud at the shy kid in the corner comment. I love how you explain things, and I’ll be binging your content today. Thanks for explaining it so well
Came from your umbrella plant video and ended up here. You have a video for every plant I own. Thank you!!
Thank you for all the info you gave. None of the videos I’ve watched on TH-cam addressed this issue.
I was lucky. Bought mine from lowes and it’s thriving and planted right. Repotting this spring. Can’t wait. Thanks for these tips!
Great!
I’m sorry, but 1:53 has me wheezing 😭🤣 I’m subbing already 🤘
I've been looking for this sort of video for years now. Great vid! You did a great job on this one
exactly what ive been looking for! got to go showing this weekend for some sticks and a bigger pot
This is the most useful Monstera information video I've seen. Thanks!!
This is such a great channel, and I love the title Kill This Plant, it took me by surprise we are saving this plant!
Pure comedy gold
I never laughed so hard. This will definitely help me be a better plant mom.
you're pretty much the only reason I haven't killed all my houseplants 💚 thank you for making your videos super beginner friendly....and funny, I love the humor!
Thanks man!
What a great video explanation so clear and concise and on top of that you used humour! Never subscribed so fast thank you
Finally, a really helpful video!!
Haha, thanks for subscribing.
You're a great TH-camr......You taught us and entertained us. Great work!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I appreciate that!
Thank you sir, very well stated. I ordered two small rooted cuttings and I can wait for the growth I just wanted to start out right from the beginning. Your video was very helpful without making me feel as if I would not succeed.
Blessings
