    Where does this fucking sentiment of "videogames have finally grown up" stem from? The Last Of Us? Fuck, Silent Hill 2 was more complex, deep and 'grown up' than any of these scripted walking-and-talking 'action' games. And Silent Hill 2 came out 15 years ago. Hell, why not go back further to Planescape: Torment, that's 17 years ago. Or when we're talking waking-and-talking, how about classic adventures? One of my favorites, Beneath A Steel Sky, great story, 22 years old. That's older than the average Last of Us player.
    Video Games have not grown up. They're sacrificing what made the medium unique to seem that way, when we had games with good stories and characters since the early 90s.

    • @dragonphoreal
      @dragonphoreal 8 ปีที่แล้ว +28

      people who think that video games have finally "grown up" and that older games are "Neanderthalic" need to get over themselves and accept the basic fact that *new doesn't equate to quality*, and that they are being childish themselves for thinking that older games are "less mature". For instance where as I couldn't care less for the plot of FFXIII, Final Fantasy IX is one of much more compelling to me. While it has a more cartoony art-style, the game's plot and themes of *life vs death* are so well executed and more mature than anything in those "realistic" games. The characters in FFIX deal with emotions, identity, and whether or not their lives mean anything. In fact the final boss fight, while a lot of people criticize it for being out of nowhere, is basically serving as an argument over *whether or not life means anything*. It utilizes its themes in such a creative way while also letting the game be a game. And people who think that a something with a cartoony art-style can't be taken seriously need to watch the anime series *KAIBA* to see how tell really tell a mature story.

      From journalists, I guess? They love to proliferate effuse praise about games like this. As if old games didn't have great, memorable stories (often without sacrificing gameplay or pushing the technology or whatever). Guess they have to justify their bloated scores and advertisements. It's pretentious. They seem to hold that because gaming is this big industry, and millions go into these AAA titles, and OH THE GRAPHIX, and artistic debate... maybe because this is all we're getting, they think they need to justify what is happening, justify their time and money commitment too. Or they get blinded by a lack of options, so they forget that games used to do more with less.

      I actually used to be one of those "Videogames have finally grown up" people and praised Halo: Reach for making the FPS genre "complex" and "story-driven", and thought everyone who hated the game had poor taste. All the way up until a couple of years ago when a friend recommended I play Deus Ex (2000), his favorite game of all time.
      Holy fuck what an eye opener, I never knew game mechanics could be intertwined so flawlessly with the story. My gameplay decisions had actual impact without the dumb "do you choose good or evil?" cutscene prompts. The amount of actual, currently relevant philosophy in the story was also staggering.
      I'm currently going through the Baldur's Gate games and loving it, planning on doing Planescape and fallout next. There's a whole world of games I just missed out on for years because I thought they'd be outdated.

      My biggest fear (lol) came from all this supernatural haunted-house type shit in the demo. Like, I get it. Amnesia and P.T. had supernatural elements in them, but RE has pretty much been about sci-fi/body horror.
      I feel like people who say 'well RE4 was so different' kinda miss the point I'm trying to make. It's not the gameplay that I expect to really not gel well (even though I am sick and tired of first person horror at this point), its that I think calling this RE is very much a cash-in. GoW feels like this to me as well. Use a popular series to prop up your new IP, rather than taking the risk on its own universe for folks to get into.

    I can't wait for Capcom to revive the Megaman series with a new reboot where Megaman is a robocop-like amputee with a drinking problem. It'll have a behind-the-shoulder camera that is fixed, and minimal gameplay in exchange for more scripted events and dialogue.
    Instead of gaining the powers of bosses he defeats, Megaman gains crafting components so you can craft your own weapons, which are basically all the same but with a different color. You'll have to protect his little sister, Roll, during the entire game, as he teaches her how to be a Megaperson like a parental figure, since their real parents died in some tragic backstory involving the villain of the game being pissy at the fact that they had a half-machine son.
    Now Megaman and his sister are on a quest not only to avenger their parents, but also to stop the evil Dr. Wily who somehow turned most of the world into a cinematic wasteland, and has an evil army oppressing the innocent Megacivilians, and there's a cool rebel army, with a leader who is a member of a minority because of reasons. The second-in-command is known simply as "Zero" and is a badass, silent dude who likes to stand in ledges and brood over places, and has cryptic dialogue that is supposedly deep or something, fuck, I dunno. Also you can buy a Day One DLC to play as him. Its just a re-skin, though, not a new story or anything like that.
    The game will deal with totally original issues like trans-humanism due to Megaman being part robot and there's evil purists and shit.
    The final battle against the dude who killed Mega's parents will happen at night, in a storm, with a HUGE full moon and be REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY REALLY slow paced because of cinematic reasons.
    Then if you beat the game without ever taking any damage, and only killing enemies with the starting melee weapons, a small window will be open during an escape-sequence in which you must run, so its REALLY hard to see. But if you do it, you'll notice there is a red hat with a letter "M" on it as an Easter Egg. Nintendo will then sue Capcom for copyright reasons and the world will blow up or sumthin i dunno

      Also throughout the entire game, you will be reminded/offered that one can simply bypass the boss characters and get the equipment one would earn from fighting them through...microtrasnactions. Just buy all the crap and forget the game :) Only 5 bucks for one crate.

    -Last of Us is a third person game
    -Last of Us was overly cinematic that told a story involving the bond between a child and a father figure. The game came out a few months after Ascension and was hugely successful
    -Last of Us had a hunting segment in the woods during winter.
    -GoW is third person all of a sudden.
    -GoW is overly cinematic all of a sudden.
    -The new GoW demo takes place in the woods during winter where Kratos (father figure) and his son (child) go on a hunting trip.

      Jonathan Lando I'm not saying you have to agree with Brit 100%. That said, I've seen let's plays a of this new GOW. Nothing about it impresses me.
      FYI, I'm the kind of guy who is into hack n' slash games of the crazy variety. Devil May Cry, Bayonetta (or most of Platinum's games for that matter), Ninja Gaiden, even games like Darksiders or Castlevania Lords of Shadows (despite not being full hack n' slash games). You know, the kind of genre the old GOW fit in.
      I never liked the sluggish Dark Souls-like combat. Heck, Dark Souls isn't even a hack n' slash and anyone who thinks that don't know what they're talking about. But at least the combat in Dark Souls was deliberately sluggish to set in the feeling of hopelessness, since everybody is on an even playing filed. Most of Dark Souls depth lies in stat and build management anyway, not moment to moment gameplay.
      This new GOW is trying to ape that Dark Souls methodical/sluggish combat while also trying to be God of War, but also wanting to have that Last of Us feel... which for me personally doesn't work. Nioh did this more methodical combat way better. And God Hand, another 3rd person brawler (a game from the PS2 era IGN gave a 3/10... for some reason), just puts whatever combat this new GOW has to shame.

      @@introduction1266 Kratos starts off sympathetic and over the series you see him blame everyone else but himself for his problems and destroy everything, including himself, in a quest of petty vengeance. It's simple, but it's a story about internal and external destruction that is very fitting for a game about ripping the entrails out of a cyclops. It's a dark power fantasy but it's very honest about the consequences of your actions.
      There's no way you can see Kratos as redeemable by GoW III. But everyone in life has felt wronged by someone and wanted to do something about it at some point and that's exactly what Kratos lets you indulge. That's why his design screams raw power and aggression. But it also reminds you that revenge is futile and mutually destructive. The game gets you feeling aggressive and powerful. The story is a big "don't try this at home" disclaimer.

      I don't think that's true, but I think a perfect balance has yet to be achieved between player agency and large sweeping stories. I just think it's beyond silly to discount a game type because you dislike it. While I do think it's wrong to disingenuously change a franchise to be what it's not, people have great times with these "Walking sims".
      It's the same argument as sports games. I don't like sports games, but I'm not going to tell anyone that they should just play/watch the real sport because it's the same thing, that's just dumb.

    I understand why you and many others are disappointed at the change for God of War, I am too. However, I realised that after looking at both the reception of God of War 3 and it's later instalments. The target audiance for the game had no more interest in the series, for a few reasons.
    God of War 3 killed off the most powerful figures in the series. This made the following games lose that looming threat that the bosses provoked; their shadows over the player was gone. There were no Gods, Titants nor Primordials to defeat. They were all dead.
    Not only that but, the new team wasn't up to what the original team could preform, the original team that made God of War was gone. They had worked on other projects in the gaming industry and the majority of them had left to pursue other projects. The new team, whilst headed by the same people who worked on the original series, knew that they could not emulate the original series. So they decided to go back to the drawing board.
    The reason they made changes to the gameplay, perspective, camera and the like. Is because they had already done everything they could in God of War 3. God of War 3 was the highest peak the series ever reached, after the third instalment it has never gotten as much attention as it once did.
    I hate some of the choices they've made but, with it being impossible for them to surpass what they have already done with the team they have. They have to experiment with this new team, otherwise they will make a mess of their later projects.

      ***** Its common for people who write stories, films or whatever; To fall in love with their own main character. When they do this they tend to give them complete plot armour, making it seem as though they can take on the world. Kratos is evidence of this.
      This game shouldn't have happened. Because they were too spinless to kill Kratos off then and there, due to their love of him, as well as the fans constantly asking for another God of War game. We get this.

      ianmaluk1 That makes no sense kratos couldn't die at the end of the story because he was basically the new hades and he had hades weapon which is why no one else could control his soul. Plus why would he die there but not die any of the other times he died? I thought they should've made another game where he takes on gods from other mythologies, but keeping with the same combat system as the rest of the games. You don't need to have the original team to make a game feel like the rest of the series. Look at sly cooper 4 it's not even made by the original studio yet it feels like an actual sly game because they didn't fucking change the genre of the game and they had a plotline that felt like it fit the story. If they wanted to make a new game what they should've done was keep the gameplay the same and just explain how when he left he to walk the destoryed planet he found the lands of the other gods weren't changed by what he did since they all kept to their own territories. If they did that it would feel like a god of war game where he's found a bunch of new gods and kills all the new gods.

    • @ianmaluk1
      @ianmaluk1 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. Kratos can die even if he was the new Hades, the same goes for the other Gods. They were born into the world, meaning they can die. They can live for a very long time but, if someone knows how to kill them they can and will kill them.
      2. Kratos didn't want to die at any of the points he was killed, every time he died he had a reason to come back. There was no reason for him to come back after he killed himself, he gave hope to humanity, that's it he should have died.
      3. The original team already planned the battles between other mythologies but as I already said, they fell in love with the character of Kratos. So they wanted to keep useing him in the same setting.
      4. Yes, Sly Cooper was made by a different developer. However, they had the people from the original team both supervising and training them. That's why they were told to work on remastering The Sly Collection, that was their proof of concept for handling the sequel rights.
      5. The new team in SIE Santa Monica Studio don't have anyone to train them how the original mechanics worked, nor how to accurately project them. They are new people from different backgrounds without mentors.

    • @XxkrealxX
      @XxkrealxX 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      ianmaluk1 yes but kratos not only got powers from hades he also got powers from all of the other gods he killed. Plus he got powers from the titians he killed. He's also the only one to "die" as many times as he did yet cross over to the land of the living again. So it's not that far of a stretch to assume that the same rules don't apply to him since no one is their to keep him in the underworld and he already knows how to leave the underworld in more ways than one. My point about how sly still felt like sly is still valid there was definitely a way for them to make the game feel right. Plus in my opinion it's harder for sly than it is for god of war. Sly had more story and more main characters. When you make a new sly game even if all of the villians are different you still have 3 main characters to get right plus carmelita. Kratos is the only character that would've been the same if they did it right. Plus we will never know if they couldn't get it right with this new team since they didn't even attempt to get it right. They just made a new game because they wanted to be different but still have people who will for sure buy the game because of the name. Not just the people who will buy the game just because it's god of war but also the people who didn't see the trailer and see the game on the shelf and buy it without knowing it's not really god of war. In the end god of war is a hack and slash with boss fights that are like those old cinematic arcade games like dragon's lair. With a game like god of war as long as the combat was the same and you were still killing gods it would feel the same or at least pretty close to it. I guess we'll never truly know since they made the game like this instead of trying to make a game that felt like god of war

The new game should have expand of what GOW was, a hack n slash/beat m up. They should created more creative mechanics and add more depth into it. But they didn't, because God of war was never supposed to be a complex hack and slash game like DMC. That's why it got so popular in the first place, because most of its fans were casual gamers who wanted a simple hack and slash game. So the developers made 6 games with the exact same combat system and it became stale. This new GoW is taking the franchise in a new direction much like how fallout 3 took fallout in a new direction, and all the praise that it is getting is rightfully deserved.

But i agree the game leaves a lot to be desired from a gameplay perspective and the continuity of the story and kratos's character doesn't mesh given that the events of the last game are included. Combat imho is a stiff, camera clunky mess, auto assist horrid, puzzles bland. Glad to have gow back just hopefully they focus more on gameplay next time rather than graphics and pandering.

    Personally if they announced God of War 4 with the same basic game play and traditional gaming mechanics i wouldn't care as much. I'm happy that games are changing things up and not being handcuffed to the old ways of doing things. New ideas, new techniques and options is always the best thing to possess. No video game series should keep the same mechanics and game play forever, they always bring changes. (whether they be small or large changes)

Devil May Cry, Bayonetta, Metal Gear Rising Revengeance, Ninja Gaiden (reboot) and Shinobi (reboot) it's sad to see a Action Hack n' Slash series become a Last of Us Clone. Another AAA cinematic, story focused, mainstream, slow, forced walking segments and dull combat. The new GOW looks vanilla compared to the original trilogy. I fear the Hack n' Slash will go the way of the Arena Shooter...extinct.

      ***** To say that video games can't be an excellent medium for story telling is insane. Hell, I prefer storytelling in video games to any other media. To say that a game can't marry gameplay and story together and excel at both is also insane.
      Someone hasn't played the Halo games.

      ***** I would say it depends on the game. A game such as Life is Strange is built around being story driven, and for many franchises the story is extremely important to many fans.
      In the case of the God of War (judging from the video alone), I agree that the new direction of being more a emotional roller coaster walking simulator is a bad idea.

      I've just plain given up on games like the last of us, horizon zero dawn and this new God of war they are not games with cool mechanics or simple fun they're stories prenteding to be games with crappy scripted sequences to fake tension and generic characters along with a young child character to lazily build emotion

    • @nickv1212
      @nickv1212 6 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      James McGuinness
      What's your problem with Horizon? It's got some of the most engaging combat in recent years with tons of ways to approach it. The Last of Us's combat might not be very innovative or deep, but I still had a blast playing it on Grounded. And it has one of the most enjoyable multiplayer modes I've ever played. The amount of ways you can approach the multiplayer is insane too. You can build stealth builds that are very viable and feel completely different from others. And going one against a whole team and beating them has never felt so great. Just look at this.
      th-cam.com/video/mwioQQ_ixdo/w-d-xo.html
      And you haven't played this game. You don't even know if the combat will be engaging or not. Is it really necessary to have a fixed camera and normal hack and slash gameplay? Can things not evolve and still retain a lot of the same aspects? There's still combos, light and heavy attacks, etc. There's no jumping but you do gain a ton of spatial awareness due to the camera and new ways to approach combat due to this. Using ranged weapons can now actually be fun rather than just something to spam. Throw your axe at this enemy to freeze them and continue your combo with other weapons and then line up other enemies to be hit with the axe when you call it back and then continuing your combo. I can already see myself having fun with that.
      And sorry, I wanna care about the characters I play, atleast if the game is attempting to have a story with complex characters. You might not remember this, but Kratos was a bit more complex in the first game and the games that followed were almost nothing but rage. And care to actually explain what was wrong with The Last of Us's characters? Rather than just a generic comment about "crappy scripted sequences and fake tension" how about actually explaining that position because literally anybody can say that about anything. It doesn't matter unless you can back it up otherwise it's an opinion without any thought behind it.

    Even though I disagree, I must say that this was a well-made video with solid points I find myself nodding my head at.
    But if I'm being honest, the reason I'm actually interested in this new direction GoW is taking is the same reason you're not- it's becoming more like TLoU/Uncharted. I really liked TLoU, I really like slow "walky-feely" games, and I've never been interested in character action unless they had an interesting story or were associated with games I did like (see: MGR Revengeance).
    I get you're point and I don't think you're wrong or anything; this is a wildly different direction that could go wrong and it means one less of a kind of game you like, that sucks. But personally I'm interested in GoW for the first time ever. I guess my point is that there isn't one way to judge a video game, they can be made with different design goals in mind and still be equally worthwhile, and having more of one kind of game than another isn't necessarily bad for gaming as a whole.

    • @christianhansen2569
      @christianhansen2569 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      +Andy Oz I would try and keep an open mind and judge the game on its own merits, albeit remaining skeptical over such a drastic change in direction. Which is what I'm doing for GoW and RE7. Change isn't always bad after all.
      Also some people would say that Nathan Drake is already sociopath that kills everyone :P

      +Christian Hansen Would you like if NaughtDog announces that Uncharted 5 and The Last Of Us 2 will be hack and slash games?
      And how can you not like for example
      Devil May Cry 3?
      Or Bayonetta 2?

    • @christianhansen2569
      @christianhansen2569 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I would probably do the same thing I did with Revengeance and give it a shot because I like the universe. At that point if the game is good then there won't be a problem. If it sucks, it would fail on its own merits and not because it didn't stick to its roots.
      I see a lot of complaints about games that are bad because they deviate from their genre (RE6, Banjo Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts, etc.), but from my perspective all that criticism about straying away from the series roots comes after the fact: a game is only bad for "straying from its roots" if it was a bad game in and of itself, because there exist games that do depart from the series core mechanics while still being good games. Granted, games that do make radical departures from the original design are taking much bigger risks, due to unfamiliarity within the design team and alienation from established fans. All I'm saying is that I wouldn't count my chickens before they hatched.
      As for the second part of your question, I don't inherently dislike DMC3 or Bayo 2 or any of the other character action classics, in fact a big reason I'm subscribed to TheGamingBritShow is because I like to hear what he has to say about character action. It's just that I've always been drawn more to story-centric "slower" genres, with cutscenes and downtime; games like XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Fallout: New Vegas, Fire Emblem, Life is Strange, MGS2, and of course TLoU just to give you a broad strokes image. That's not to say I don't like action games at all, just that typically games with frenetic gameplay or high dexterity challenge (like platformers, fighting games, arcade-style games, etc.) stress me out too much to enjoy. I will say my tastes are changing: right now I'm wrapping up Dark Souls 1 after completing Bloodborne, and the Souls series are games that I would normally NEVER consider playing because I always thought they were too difficult and stress-inducing. I'll probably give DMC a try sooner or later.

    • @Ferghyzzitha
      @Ferghyzzitha 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Yes but the thing is,there are many good games like The Last Of Us Already,and many more good games of the action genre are coming,each 10 "The Last Of Us Games" , they make 1 "Metal Gear Rising Game, Devil May cry or Bayonetta Game"
      How many good hack and slash games are been made right now?
      Just Nier Automata and maybe Nioh,
      and now hack and slash games genre lost the most important (not the best) hack and slash game ever made that is
      God Of War.

    its insane how people say that " the old god of war gameplay doesnt work on this period of time" . i started playing god of war 3 on ps3 and its still a fun game to play even after 7 years after its release. this situation of god of war 4 just shows how the casuals ruin gaming . they buy everything that looks like an interactive story instead of an actuall good games.i hate that my favorite gaming franchises will be ruined because everything needs to be suited for the casuals. another example of this bs can be seen in fallout 4 that changed the series from a post nuclar rpg to a post nuclar far cry clone. im sick of that my favorite games are dumbed down just because the casuals are dumb idiots who cant learn how to use a combat system or figure out things for themselfs. atleast we got nier automata that is a amazing heck and slash arpg game that isnt for casuals at all.

    • @crimsonhead100
      @crimsonhead100 6 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      Basically GoW 4's combat added more complexity by giving players choice to their playstyle
      Both Kratos and Atreus have a skill tree
      Armor upgrades grants you stats and status effects
      Kratos and Atreus can equip runes (which are all upgradable) onto your weapons and armor that offer different moves (there's so many damn moves in this game)
      Combat is more precise and mashing gets you killed fairly quickly
      Enemies have a stun meter which increase the more you use melee based attacks
      Elemental damage plays a huge factor to different enemies so you can create builds for certain encounters

      Funny how I absolutely adore a game like Monster Hunter, where I'll spend hours happily grinding enough materials to min/max my character for a specific encounter with weapons/armour, stat advantages, item vulnerabilities all alongside a stamina meter and slow deliberate weapon attacks...Yet God of War 4 does nothing but come across as a stale try hard piece of shit slapping all the typical RPG mechanics in for the sake of "all duh best games have dis!". Monster Hunter is a game built around this stuff, God of War 4 just slaps it in because it's basically expected to be there regardless of whether it belongs.
      Original God of War (alongside games like Devil May Cry, Metal Gear Revengence, Bayonetta) had depth without all the RPG bullshit. A couple weapons and a massive list of attacks. You can smash your face against the controller on normal mode and get to the end easily enough, but only by really jumping into and learning those games systems will get you through the harder difficulties these sort of games were intended to be played on in the first place.

      I think it depends on what the game is going for. If you're God of War and you're striving for some amazing narrative, you're doing yourself a disservice because your forte should be fun and exhilarating combat, and you're straying from that and your roots as a hack-and-slash game. However, I can appreicate something like a Silent Hill or certain RPGs where most of the gameplay is structured in a way that lends itself to a good story and characters.
