Hi! I have another question, if you don’t mind. How important is it to you to have a niche? That is the one the thing I have heard repeated over and over and that is what stresses me out the most. I feel like I can’t go forward until I have a niche nailed down and, while I’m leaning toward education because I have a teaching background, I find myself getting extremely stressed trying to figure out how to write geared toward that niche.
Honestly, a niche will help you look more professional, if you speak to a client and tell them you specialize in X,Y or Z. Or, if you advertise your services somewhere as a ‘fitness copywriter’ or whatever. However, it’s not necessary and remember that you’re free to change your niche as often as you like. I didn’t have a niche and I enjoyed having a variety of clients. Only as I became more experienced I realized what projects I prefer, and started thinking about picking a niche. But to this day, I work with a variety. So, some people will swear that having a niche will help you. Others, like me will say that it’s not necessary. I think having a niche is good if you want to become THE copywriter for a niche. So, for example, you want all fitness brands to know you as the best fitness copywriter.
I went through the same! At the end of the day it’s about figuring out if you can use having a niche to your advantage. For example, let’s say you care about the environment. You can reach out to slow fashion brands or plastic-free brands, and your outreach could include that you only collaborate with brands that are sustainable. That would probably work to your advantage because 1. It’s something that you love and care about and 2. It’ll connect you with the brand. Or, you can just roll without a niche and see what happens. Either way you can be successful.
I understand the SEO aspect but dang this is so repetitive it makes me cringe. From a marketing aspect it has why they are different (because they cut CURLY hair) but it doesn't capture WHY the clients should care.
