Knipex? Nah, Vise Grips : The EDC Multitool Plier

In this video, I showcase the reasons I carry a set of vice grips as my EDC pliers, and the multiple functions they can perform that other pliers can't.

Spot weld the head of a short 1/4-20 bolt to the side of your vise grips, so they can be used an improvised camera mount.
A small pair for EDC is a great addition! Adding the notch and pairing it with Sawzall blades is brilliant! I keep several sizes of vise grips in the tool bags in my vehicles. One of the first off label uses for vice grips that I learned about was for a window crank handle in an old truck I bought. When we needed pliers the window handle was used! When the locking lever for the front end loader on my tractor went missing a pair of vise grips saved the day and are still in use 10 years later. Thanks for making this video.

Maxlvledc on TH-cam taught me the "notch for saw blades" trick. Great channel would recommend.
They are super handy, if a little awkward to use. Although, that's part of the fun too. Hand them to someone uninitiated and watch them fumble around with it. 😉That's the most fun you can have with pliers.

@@geoffap0 Nope, credit where credit is due. Can't say I have NEEDED it, but camping or clearing the way to the creek could be made easier by having something with more throw than my Swiss Champ...

Thanks for the kind words and the watch. 👍I've had a pair of Vise Grips on me for a while. The first day I moved it to my EDC bag, someone at Walmart had bought a new battery for their car, but didn't have the tools to swap out the old one. I was able to help him out. A coworker got the 4" Knipex just a very a week ago, and he still has yet to find a use for it. Whenever he is looking stuff up on the computer, trying to put the giant rolls of bubble wrap up on the shelf, or organize boxes, I yell to him "HEY TRY YOUR PLIERS!" 😁

It’s funny how are dads, uncles and grandfathers survived before all these new fangled mini pry bars and Knipex pliers, lol.

We had some volunteers for a local college come in to help with donor medical equipment we were sending to a third world country. We needed the stands and carts broke down for shipping, and of the ten volunteers, maybe two knew how to use a ratchet and socket set. Grown ass men. In higher education. To become technicians. Didn't know how to use basic tools. It's troubling. We must show them the way. 🤓

You gotta be kidding me! 🤦♂️. I just took it for granted that all men, at some point in their lives, would have used these tools, smh. Sounds like the gene pool is shallower than I thought 🤔

@@OutsideTheTargetDemographic I think it's just an individual thing. I sometimes have to crawl all the way across a house either under a really low post and pier or through a tight attic maneuvering over, under, or through a 40' jungle gym of pipes, wires, and/or support braces only to find myself in a Murphy's Law situation where I need to saw through a pipe or wood blocking. I think rather than lug around a sawzaw and other tools that far or crawl all the way back out and back in again, you're idea in a back pocket could be an effortless timesaver!

Since I decided to experience bliss a few times, and now have two kids, and therefor surrender more and more of my life and my house to the invaders, I learned pretty early on to pack my 'need to haves' into a backpack, so I can always know where things are, regardless of the best efforts of my wife and kids. 😂👍 And it turns out, the more I HAVE the thing, the more likely I am to USE that thing. Odd.

Not sexy? A little slow? Slip joint pliers seem to be the preferred EDC. My father in law carries a 8" set of slip joints and seem to find them handy. I've never reached for my vice grips and though "these won't be up to the task".
Sig, I think it’s because EDC has become a “thing” and everybody and their brother is trying to sell us the latest greatest “tool”. Nowadays, if you believe what you see on TH-cam, if you don’t have a mini prybar, tiny bolt action pen, write in the rain notebook, etc, etc, you’re doing it wrong 😂.
I’m a Gen X’er, and I remember every adult male carried 2 things, a pocket knife and a handkerchief and it served them just fine. It seems many people want to be Macgyvern (?) today, lol.
I took a 3/4” length of steel round stock and milled a blade’s width pocket into it then drilled and tapped the fixture to secure the blade to it . Works like a CHARM !
@@michaelnasser8697 Ha yeah lots of hype for sure but I have to admit that I carry quite a bit and use everything I carry. I’m a boomer and I remember that all my dad carried was a lighter, a pack of unfiltered camels and a case pocket knife. I’ve almost always got a Swisschamp, small flashlight and a case pocket knife for sure. My notebook is usually close at hand as well.
@@SigogglinJack and that makes perfect sense, carry what you need and need what you carry.
Knipex and vice grips are not mutually exclusive, since Knipex make vice grips too. I'm sure they are amazing. But for urban EDC for occasional use, they're a bit chunky, the Cobra XS fit nicely in the 5th pocket of my jeans.
Of course like with the vice grips, I could probably buy a different brand of small water pump pliers for £5-10.
I've been thinking this a lot lately. Why all the knipex clones everywhere? Vise grips have gotten me out of more jams than any other tool, 1000 times over. Whenever I struggle with something, picking up the vise grips usually solves the problem.
I'm sure the Knipex are a fine tool, but they aren't THEE only plier on the market nor the best, nor the cheapest. Vices are just so handy.

Interesting. I know the 4" 5" 6" Knipex pliers seem to be the new favored tool, I didn't know they made a vise grip, and no one at work knew what a vise grip was. But maybe that's just commentary on the younguns and this new generation. 😬 You'd be disappointed to hear how often we have to teach people how a socket and ratch works....
Leatherman crunch is a vice grip multitool…..
