What do you EDC now? Are there still 9 different bits for these? It seems they only come with four. Is the Large version too big to pocket EDC?
@@Brentw182 Hello Friend! I EDC the Swiss Champ, which is maybe 1mm thinner than the Cybertool L. The CTL has the possibility of loosing a bit, which makes it something I'm not willing to risk for the benefit of the company I work for's benefit. I beleive there are 8 or 9 available bits, but it comes with four.
@@Brentw182 As far as "too large to pocket edc", I'd say no, with the caveat that if you find a way to prevent it from going to the bottom of your pocket, then you can carry it. This could be a clip, like I added to my Swiss Champ, or the $20 swissqlip, or lanyard. If it gets to the bottom of your pocket, I find it want to turn horizontally and it gets intrusive.

I was underwhelmed by butyl on the door panels, despite covering the entire inner surface of the car shell. Although butyl did a great job on other areas (especially the firewall of the engine compartment - HUGE difference). Curious... did you experiment with closed cell foam, or mass loaded vinyl on your doors? Some folks claim butyl is largely for attenuation, whereas mass-loaded vinyl or closed cell foam will actually block more soundwaves. I'd prefer not taking the door panels, vapor barriers, and speakers off again. But would consider it if I could get material impact (like the spots on the engine compartment firewall), no pun intended.
@@guidetolife9386 No, this series is the first time I have ever done anything like this to any car. I followed the guidance of my coworker, who is a literal genius (156 IQ), who has done several of his cars and knows how to get the best out of your car sound system and whatnot. While I don't doubt there are better products that would give you a better result, for the cost, I am so thrilled with how well the Noico deadener and foam insulator worked, that I have done my wife's car, my parents car, and intend to spend the time to do our new-to-us third car after winter. 👍

Engine oil?

how are they actually usefull with so little surface area?
@@vladuroset Hi, friend. Considering it is one of the thinest, widest, loosest peices of metal, which gets wind, engine, and road noise buzzing through it, I'd say it made a large difference. Untreated, all the engine noise would buzz through the hood, and into the cabin. It also makes dropping the hood sound quality and sturdy, instead of the "cymbals chime", it's a "THUD". considering the amount of time it takes, I would, and have, done it again, in my parent's and wife's cars. 👍

Which areas were most impactful? If someone doesn't want to do the entire car (like you did) where should they focus? Doors, obviously... But what else? The trunk space? What provided the highest return on investment (of time and money)?
@@guidetolife9386 Hello friend. Well, it all depends on the type of car and trim level. But based on my experience, I would absolutely do: +doors (including trunk and hood) +ceiling/roof (largest, flattest, most-drum-head-like part of your car) +wheel wells (a simple spray-on material) +driver and passenger footwell/inner firewall (the wall between the engine and cabin, under the dashboard). Everything made a noticeable difference, even putting sone on the underside of the hood. It all stacks, and soon you will find you don't mind applying the material as much as you thought you would. 🤓
@@OutsideTheTargetDemographic Thank you for responding! A Forester, of course! I just did the doors (took a while!). At low speeds, only minor impact (coated inner section of all doors with butyl sound mat). It's the engine noise and wind noise that get me - you need noise cancelling headphones to avoid acoustic fatigue on long drives. I was surprised you did the hood...I figured that's all external noise (i.e., only what comes through the firewall will be impactful). I'm glad you didn't list the floor as an impactful area (taking out the seats and taking up the carpet looked to be a pain). With limited time, having done the doors, what sequence would you go in for highest impact? Thank you very much for documenting and sharing everything!
@guidetolife9386 The floor had a decent amount of foam and deadener, so I'm sure what I added HELPED, but even my base model had material there already. Honestly, the window tinting (I got the heat-rejecting ceramic stuff) made a good bit of difference from wind noise. Adding a layer of plastic makes the window "thicker" and now the sound has to travel through two, different, layers of material to come into the cabin. Plus, now you have a pimped ride for picking up bitches. Bitches love tinted station wagons. 😉 My Amazon decible meter now reads 53 dB at highway speeds, after everything was done. That's down from 70-something my phone app said I started at. I am *clearly* no professional, but the more you do, the more it stacks. Just do a bit every weekend : I did all ten videos over maybe 3 months, due to two toddlers and whatnot eating into what little free time I have. But also, Dollar Tree has an 8 pack of foam earplugs for $1.25.....so....😋
In regards to the hood : yes, it is external noise, but all the ego noise goes into the flat, transmitting metal roof, which vibrates the sound into the frame, and the into the cabin. Plus, it's the easiest part of the car to get to. 🤓 If you have done the doors, then you know how to apply the stuff in smaller areas. Everything else is more open in comparison. Given wind and engine noise are your concern, I'd recommend: +Window tinting (mine cost $180 to do the whole car, I took it to a shop) +I put rain guards on my windows, IDK if that helped or hindered the wind noise. +The hood is easy to do, and would take like 30 minutes total. +See if you have any material on your engine-side firewall. My car has Z E R O, so what material I COULD get in there helped cut the engine noise down. I have insights on the engine bay, if you need them. +The roof. Largest, flattest, least-braced slab of thin metal, directly in the air stream. It made a marked difference in wind/rain/hail/snow noise. 🤓👍
These sights are made mostly from aluminum alloy which is not magnetic. The screws and hardware are steel which is magnetic.
@@scottthroop6208 They feel and act quality. Very little wobble and seem to be thoughtfully engineered.
I will say you did peak my interest with the oil treatment and makes me want to try it out! Thanks for that!
Last note for any potential future installs for you, use as little roller as possible because the more the foil is distorted the lower the effect it can produce. Thats why a lot of the better quality (albeit more expensive) products come in a perfectly flat sheet.
@@honeybadgerwrx I did have a roller that I did use on the sheets I could, but the size and shape of some of the door and other panels prevented tools from being used, as I could hardly (and with many, MANY scratches) get my hand or arm into those areas. But yes, the more surface area to be more firmly pressed into place, the better.
@OutsideTheTargetDemographic no i saw you had one. I'm just saying use it with low pressure and only as needed
Also i should mention you should aim to use 1 larger piece even if you use less than 50% coverage. Like if you did 1 full sheet or 2 full sheets on that panel with as few cuts as possible it would yield better results. Theres been extensive tests on it and every piece applied should be at a minimum 4"x4" but ideally it would be as big of a piece as possible to fit into the access panel.
@@honeybadgerwrx Ideally, I could strip everything down and cover every square inch. That said, you would hit a point of diminishing returns, where more product would not make for less noise, but only more cost, effort, and weight. Even ignorant me doing this for the first time am very satisfied with the results, and will be doing it to every new car I get. 👍
@OutsideTheTargetDemographic I'm not trying to call you ignorant or say you should do 100% coverage. Just giving you tips and tricks to yield a better end result on the next vehicle to apply it to. Aim for 50%, minimal roller, you'll see it will be more effective!
Hello did yours come with that yellow handle?
@@harshtimes23 Hello Friend. It did not. I used some heatshrink, it's a rubber tube that, when you heat it up with a lighter or heat gun, will shrink down and wrap tightly around something. Less than $10 on Amazon for a large assortment of colors and sizes. 👍 I went yellow in case I drop it, a higher viz color is easier to find, and the rubber grip gives you a better.....grip...

This is great! I just got a 2011 Forester and was struck by how hollow the doors all sound. I have to open the doors to replace blown speakers from the previous owner. I'm glad I found your videos for reference!
@@tylervigue3878 Congrats on the Forester. 👍 It started with the doors, and ended with Insulating the whole thing. It's absolutely worth the effort, and there is so little effort I don't understand why Subaru doesn't just spend the $300 in material to do it from the factory, when everything is already disassembled. Oh well. Now you get to know your car better. 😉
When all done, at highway speeds, I have to decide between having my earbuds play my podcasts on volumn level 1 (just a tad too quiet) or 2 (just a touch too loud). It's made the car more than half as loud as it started.
I'm curious how happy you would've been with using 2 different products from Second Skin automotive with at least 50% coverage.
@honeybadgerwrx I don't know what that is, but even this no-name brand made a massive difference. My earbuds are now at 1-2 bars of volume at highways speeds, when before I needed 4-5 bars. I hardly hear wind, tire, and road noise at highways speeds now, having finished the complete car install.
This is an epic review of these. I just got them. Watching to help me install mine
Today,, before I found your video, I used nail polish to paint the blade of the front sight of my Uberti 1871 Baby Rolling Block .22 rifle. I was having a problem with the rifle's black front sight blending in with a black bullseye. Man!, the nail polish sure makes stands out now!. My technique was different from yours. I put on bright white nail polish first and let i dry for about an hour. Next, I put on some neon orange nail polish and waited another hour before applying some clear nail polish (it was called Ultra Shiny Glass-Like Nail Polish). We'll see, but I really like the way it's looking after applying the nail polish. I didn't put it on thick, didn't need to.
@@bltefft I do about the same, adding a base of white, then hi viz, then a clear coat. The other benefit is, if your sights are not adjustable, you can paint them to adjust them. Say, you typically hit low. If you paint the front sight only 80% of the way up, your sight "is now lower", which would raise your point of impact. You can start by fully painting them, and then removing the paint to get more accurate. 🤓
The rag can go on fire and what type of linseed did you use.

@@Jaang29 The plastic covers both 1) don't resonate sounds like metal does (how many plastic drum cymbals have you seen?) and 2) don't rust like metal does. The spray prevents the metal from making/transferring noise, and from rusting (water can't rust metal that it can't get to). So no, I did nothing to the plastic except remove, clean, and return. Between all the videos worth of work I did reducing the sound, I got the car about 20 dB quieter than it started. Every 3 dB in reducion is a 50% reduction in sound. Are you noise sensitive in general? Or is it part of a longer story on why you pursued this? I would love to do this in the untreated areas of my vehicle. Some after market noise deadening is in place already.
@@WKFS Oh, I have "sonar tech hearing". I can hear a fan being left on in the other room. 😅 In an attempt to preserve that hearing, I figured 1.5 hrs a day, 5 days a week, I am subjected to the road, wind, and traffic noise of my car, so, might as well try making it quieter. I drive with earbuds in, and I went from having my volume set to 5-6 to now 2, sometimes 3. It's an amazing improvement, for little money and time. Also, I'm convinced my car AC and heater work better, because now the paid-for air stays inside the cabin longer, as it has to now get through additional layers of ND material before being transferred out of the car through the metal body panels. Lastly, you don't have to spend A weekend doing everything. Unlike washing your car, you can do areas or panels completely independently of each other. Once a week, do thirty minutes of work, and notice how every bit of work you do, stacks. You'll love it.
You should have cleaned & sprayed the back side of the plastic cover as well. Applying sound deadening mats works even better.
