    I’m from Northern Ireland and my generation thought the conflict was something our parents and grandparents had to endure, we thought it was behind us.
    When I was 18 my friends were attacked in Belfast and the youngest one died, a few days from 16 years old. The men who stabbed my friends didn’t know them, it was a maniacal hatred that cannot be justified or understood. This song is powerful for the regret those us who grew up surrounded by The Troubles feel, our powerlessness and frustration at it all, and he lives lost.

      It just sort of makes you realize how little he has really dabbled in when it comes to rock music. Putting a timeline to what he enjoys and doesn’t probably isn’t that easy if he really has been coming in completely blind to the rock/metal world. Forming strong opinions on entire generations after listening to a handful of songs is basically impossible. The truth is, in my experience, the 90s were absolutely dominated by rock/alternative music, so much so, I don’t think it will ever happen again. Rap wasn’t really mainstream and respected in the way it was now for much of the 90s and there seems to be so many different unique styles out there now, it’s tough to stamp stuff with a label anymore.
      Sure there were the spice girls, backstreet boys, Ricky Martin and the lot of pop and boy/girl bands, but there were an infinite amount of chart topping rock bands throughout the years. Early 90s with the grunge movement and mid-90s with a little more straight-forward power chord rock songs with the catchy hooks (like bush and foo fighters) and the late 90s with some of the bands like incubus, staind, korn and even the Chili peppers making a huge comeback. And sprinkle in between a whole hell of a ton of random bands like Radiohead, nine inch nails, collective soul, Radiohead, silverchair, deftones, rage, the offspring, tool, Weezer all throughout the decade. Those are just recognizable names, there were so many bands and songs then, you could really go on and on.

    To understand the song you have to understand the fight ..Not just guns and bombs But the struggle of both sides Each has a story. Each has lost someone My Father left N Ireland to start a better life in Canada And sent money home to my Grandmother Whom stopped in a store in England to buy me toys and candies for christmas on the stop over to Canada ..As she left that store 10 mins later it expolded A message from the IRA 6 months later she moved to Canada with us
    I remember dad coming home from a english pub Where someone had heard his accent and said Oh your Irish ? Then went on about the things in Ireland Dad had told the guy : Look I'm sure your a really nice person We can chat about anything you want long as it has nothing to do with Ireland I'm Canadian now I could care less about what go's on in Ireland I had my fill of it
    Dad was happy being in Canada And thrilled to be able to get his mother in Canada 1 year after Grandmother came here Dad passed away from a heart attack in Dec of 84'
    He never got to see the change in Ireland Sadly Dolores O'Riordan also had a home in Canada not far from me she passed away from drowning in 2018
    Her songs help put light on Ireland And made people think Much like the Irish band U2 and "Sunday Bloody Sunday"

She was due to collaborate with Heavy band Bad Wolves which is why she was in London. Recording was due to start the day she was found dead. The problem with the late 80's were the Glam/Hair Metal bands that made Rock (Metal) into Pop Music, and Rock was designed to be music against the system and less music for the masses only talking about Sex, Drugs and Rock & Roll... but with Grunge and Alternative Rock the whole genre came back to the origins, unfortunately Rock hadn't make a new big revolution like it 90's, because now Hip Hop is "the new Rock n Roll", and even though I'm not a huge Kanye fan (the guy is a complete douche), the guy has the reason till some point, but know Hip Hop is on its Glam metal phase which is called: Trap/Mumble Rap, I really hope Hip Hop to come back to its origins as soon as possible!!!

      Oompa Loompa 90s rock is the child of 70s rock. 90s rock may not be as good as 70s but it’s still great. You’d have thought that this pattern would mean that 2010’s rock would also be great; but, sadly, not.

      No the 80s were the best. Just because the music video scene just arrived and pushed everything. In the 90s especially late 90s music was already a commodity without emotional values.

      Agreed. It's a song about surving then emotionally processing a history of oppression, and I think it's a theme a lot of African Americans can identify with.

    • @chrislyne377
      @chrislyne377 5 ปีที่แล้ว +20

      @@Wiley_Coyote eh, not so much. It's more about the futility of trying to fight a war because of history long since gone; about causing suffering and pain and loss and death because of unthinking loyalty to a cause. The song is not about Catholic/Republican oppression; it attacks both the Nationalist and Loyalist sides for their utter stupidity.
