The truth is that Pink Floyd is a drug in and of itself. A myriad of emotions that no other band can supply. The story behind this song is so powerful! Its about loosing a loved one . It will always hurt, but with time. It becomes ok and just part of life. I dont know what the guys in the band were doing. Drugs, booze , life or what ever it was. i wish I had some.

Babies in modern society have been taught to like sweet things because when baby food began to be sold for mother's convenience, the mothers would taste it and say it wasn't good, it had no flavor. The manufacturers had to put sugar in it to get it past the mothers, and thus the babies were basically forced to learn to like sugar. It's a vicious cycle, but it in no way reflects nature. (Of course, babies wouldn't like real chocolate either, because it's bitter as hell, and bitterness is a flavor that also has to be learned acceptance. I can't stand the stuff, myself.)

I am 50 yo polish woman, started to listen to Pink Floyd in my 13thies, we havent easy access to 'west' music, as Poland was a country behind a Wall, socialism, you know. This time I met a boy who I start to love secretly. He was Pink Floyd fan, So I started to listen to Pink Floyd with him together. We spent nice time in darkness, only listening Pink Floyd album. It’s a very emotional song about death. The shock, the bargaining, and finally the acceptance. I tear up every time I hear this. Claire Torrey only did one take in the studio and they used it. They didn’t need another. When they wrote this song they felt the instrumental lacked something so they asked Claire working as a session singer in anther studio room if she would improvise for this song. She did, and this was the result. Serendipity created another masterpiece 😃

My brother, 7 years older than me, bought the album when it first came out, and had me listen to it with him, i was 10 years old....and while hearing Claire sing that, i started to cry,...even at that tender age, i understood, i could relate to the feelings she was portraying in that song,...and can even more so now 50 years later,...after losing many friends!
She did the song and left. Got paid the session fee of something equal to $100. She knew nothing about the album, or where the song went. Quite some time later, walking past a record shop she heard the song for the first time.

Always have loved Pink Floyd. Last year I was diagnosed with a terminal illness and told I’ll be lucky to make it into my 30’s. This song hits me a lot harder now but I still love it. Takes me through all the emotions and ends on acceptance 🙏 peace and love we all have our struggles

"Time", which is the song immediately before this, flows directly into this one so they should really be played together. The whole album really is one continuous experience that is totally worth investing your time into to hear as one unit. You won't regret it.

The vocals were done by one woman, Clare Torry, a 25 year old British singer.. It was an improvised vocal session where she was trying to feel out the song and understand what the guys wanted from her and made up the melody on the fly. She sung it twice fully and once partially. The final track was assembled from all three takes. That may be the difference that you are hearing. Good ear.
I am actually afraid to listen to this album everyday of my life because I don't want to become desensitized to it. People forget that this was 1973. You couldn't hide behind computers and technology. I have a strict rationing system now so I am doing OK.
As others have commented, this was all improvised. I literally can't imagine this level of innate musical talent. She heard their instrumentals barely a few hours before she showed up and recorded.... and laid down this soul-wrenching response.
So, according to Torrey, She was asked to come to the studio and had never actually heard the music. They played the song for her, told her to sing to it. She did a series of "babies" and they said, no, that isn't it. So, she belted put this magic on the second take and didn't hear the song again until she went and bought the album years later.
Will never forget the first time hearing this cruising down country gravel roads in the back of a Thunderbird T-top. God I miss the days before internet and social media. Our only concern was our immediate surroundings and friends
I totally agree. With one exception. Granted, Pink Floyd has been here a minute but look at where it’s expanding to. This channel is a perfect example. He says it himself “you guys got me exited for this”. Fans of KTF and fans of PF collided and here we are learning music we’ve never heard before. People dropping history of this album and that album. It’s fans BEING fans. We’re all different and we’re all here. I think this is what Floyd would have wanted. This album taught me EVERYTHING I ever needed to know about motivation, morality, caring, greed, longing, and death is inevitable for all of us. Death is overblown in our culture. We fight it, despise it, and deny it applies to us. This tells us, Death is just the last part of a full life. They don't even try to go into "What's next". That is left up to you.

Josh Keeling nope she did 2 1/2 takes. The 2nd one sounded far more emotional after she pretended she was an instrument. They had Clare start a 3rd take but she stopped halfway thru because she felt she was being repetitive. They used the 2 1/2 mixed. She said they showed no emotion so she figured she would not be on the album at all.

My mom passed away from complications with covid in January. I've always known what this song was about. I needed to play it recently because I knew it would help.me get thru these feelings. It's like having a weight frustrate you until the point of exhaustion and then having no energy left so you have to except it. Like death
I've been fortunate to listen to PF thru Infinity IRS Series V speakers & McIntosh system. A religious experience without a doubt. You can't feel music thru headphones like you can feel with amazing sound system. It will truly move you into another plain of existence. A state of nirvana.

What Claire Torry did in that studio that historic day was EPIC. PERIOD. With all due respect to actual divas.....meaning those top drawer, elite female opera singers going back.....oh, let's say a hundred years.....I can't imagine a vocal performance as powerful...NO....as tranSCENdent as hers. I used to work nights and one morning I was driving home and on the 7 o'clock news it was announced that Richard Wright the keyboard player in the Floyd had died. The DJ that followed the news didn't say a word but just dropped the needle on this. I had to pull into a supermarket carpark close by and just sat there weeping as this played through.
1st time I heard this I was 18. 8 of us round my friends flat in Brixton. We would trip from friday night to sunday night. Just getting wasted on the old orange sunshine tabs. We would mainly play Floyd and Dylan and jam together. But I remember so clear how I reacted to this track. I saw music notes and waves just streaming into me and just was overcome with emotion. My sister had died a couple months before and I saw her and felt she said Its all OK. I met my wife to be the next week and was together 48 years till she passed. Music brings strong emotions and memories.
Truthfully none of us were ready for PF the first time...even to this day I’ll find nuggets that I missed and I get to enjoy the soothing cocoon that is a Pink Floyd album...then graduate to full on religious ecstasy with a Pink Floyd concert!

Dark Side of the Moon is an amazing compilation of music. One of the best albums of I've ever heard. I first heard this around 1972-73, and I still listen to it all these years later.
Clare Torry, the vocalist for TGGITS, got the equivalent of about $100 for her performance. She toured with Floyd for The Dark Side and I was fortunate enough to see the Milwaukee Cty Stadium show. I was absolutely blown away and utterly amazed when this little woman had the spot shown on her and she let loose. Some 50,000 people there and you could hear a pin drop while she sang....
some years back she actually got paid a lot of money when she started a lawsuit, and the FLOYD realized the unfairness and settled and took care of her
I have to say that seeing Pink Floyd live at least 3 times in my life was the most unforgettable experiences of my life. Listening to The Great Gig in the Sky live was, well, there are no words.

She listened to the backing track a couple of times, then she put on the cans and began singing an "Oh baby, oh baby" type of scat, which was not what they wanted at all. David Gilmour was the only person to give her any direction, and offered her a can of Heinekin beer. Next, she tried sounding like an instrument, which they immediately liked. When they began to record her; she sang two and a half takes before she felt that they had enough. I remember how it lasted in the top 200 from 1973 when it debuted until the mid or late 1980s.... There is nothing out there in my opinion that comes close to the Dark Side of the Moon album or even some other PF material (there is a lot of it out there!)
This piece is about death and Clair Tory nailed it. At the time, she was a session singer and was called in for this song by Alan Parsons who was producing this album. She started using words and they stopped her and said to basically react to the music and the theme. She makes it sound as if she’s fighting death and then succumbs to it...genius piece of work.

In an interview years later, she said when they brought her into the studio, they weren't exactly sure what they wanted her to do, so they just handed her the mic and cut her loose. She, not sure what to do, she just went with the flow and sang purely from her soul......and holy shit! Frikken iconic......and beautiful, ain't it?
She was the centerpiece of this track and rightly so. Throughout the whole album you heard a bit of her every now and then, but then she was the the highlight. Beautiful as hell.
Clare Torry is by far the best vocalist I've ever heard. I've been listening to Pink Floyd since I was a teenager, and just recently found out she is a white woman from London. Amazing!! Unlike most singers, you can't even hear a break in her singing so she can take a breath.

If you break the song down into sections, you hear Clare Torry screaming in denial and fear, and as the song suddenly calms down, acceptance, and then finally leaving. Powerful stuff.

Firstly the guy who says at the beginning of the track "I am not frightened of dying, why should I be frightened of dying."etc.etc. was the doorman/security guy at Abbey Road Studios where the album was recorded, in answer to PFs general questions about the thoughts of all the different people who were employed in a minor capacity at Abbey Road at that time. Many of the whispered voices you hear on this Album are not made by the band members themselves. Clare Torrey who "Sang" this track was paid $50 for it but in the early 2000s received an out of court settlement from the band and was co-credited with writing it. It is the only song on the album that she sung on .All the other tracks that had female singers were session singers. Most of us have seen the Clare Torry video interview where she talks about this song but I remember an interview she gave long before TH-cam ,Google etc. where she specifically says that Dave Gilmour took her to one side and asked her if she could improvise her singing to imagine how she would feel what dying would be like. I first heard The Great Gig in The Sky in 74 and had no idea what the song was about but I was left stunned into a deep mental silence. I thought the singer was a beautiful black soul singer who had gone unrecognised by me. The song still moves me deeply in a wonderful way to this day.(P.S.The other 4 females on the rest of TDSOTM were all session singers and the one who has the most prominent voice on the tracks "Time, Brain Damage/Eclipse was a lady called Doris Troy who was born in The Bronx.)
Greatest reaction ever! I was honored to be at the Pulse concert and although Claire Torrie(?) was not there her spirit came out during the performance. I was stunned!! The music and the mix was perfect. If there was one moment in life I will always remember it was the Pink Floyd concert and The Great Gig in the Sky!!

There is no "worse song" on Dark Side Of The Moon. That's why some people say this album is overrated...its just that good, there isn't a single skippable song on here. With that being said, you sir are a certified fucking idiot.
I heard this album the first time in the 1977 when I was 15 years old, and my taste of music changed instantly. Nothing I have heard before (except for Bach) mattered anymore. This was my gateway to music for the soul.

It’s a very emotional song about death. The shock, the bargaining, and finally the acceptance. I tear up every time I hear this. Claire Torrey only did one take in the studio and they used it. They didn’t need another. When they wrote this song they felt the instrumental lacked something so they asked Claire working as a session singer in anther studio room if she would improvise for this song. She did, and this was the result. Serendipity created another masterpiece 😃

My brother, 7 years older than me, bought the album when it first came out, and had me listen to it with him, i was 10 years old....and while hearing Claire sing that, i started to cry,...even at that tender age, i understood, i could relate to the feelings she was portraying in that song,...and can even more so now 50 years later,...after losing many friends!
She did the song and left. Got paid the session fee of something equal to $100. She knew nothing about the album, or where the song went. Quite some time later, walking past a record shop she heard the song for the first time.

"Time", which is the song immediately before this, flows directly into this one so they should really be played together. The whole album really is one continuous experience that is totally worth investing your time into to hear as one unit. You won't regret it.

I think it's 3 women singing. Each sings a solo. If you listen close you can hear the difference in the voices.
The vocals were done by one woman, Clare Torry, a 25 year old British singer.. It was an improvised vocal session where she was trying to feel out the song and understand what the guys wanted from her and made up the melody on the fly. She sung it twice fully and once partially. The final track was assembled from all three takes. That may be the difference that you are hearing. Good ear.

I am actually afraid to listen to this album everyday of my life because I don't want to become desensitized to it. People forget that this was 1973. You couldn't hide behind computers and technology. I have a strict rationing system now so I am doing OK.
As others have commented, this was all improvised. I literally can't imagine this level of innate musical talent. She heard their instrumentals barely a few hours before she showed up and recorded.... and laid down this soul-wrenching response.
So, according to Torrey, She was asked to come to the studio and had never actually heard the music. They played the song for her, told her to sing to it. She did a series of "babies" and they said, no, that isn't it. So, she belted put this magic on the second take and didn't hear the song again until she went and bought the album years later.

This album taught me EVERYTHING I ever needed to know about motivation, morality, caring, greed, longing, and death is inevitable for all of us. Death is overblown in our culture. We fight it, despise it, and deny it applies to us. This tells us, Death is just the last part of a full life. They don't even try to go into "What's next". That is left up to you.

She said they showed no emotion so she figured she would not be on the album at all.
It's about death. Clare starts off with rage at dying which slowly transforms into calm acceptance.
Not about one's own death, but the death of a parent. Whole album is a journey from birth to death and this is mid album.

I used to work nights and one morning I was driving home and on the 7 o'clock news it was announced that Richard Wright the keyboard player in the Floyd had died. The DJ that followed the news didn't say a word but just dropped the needle on this. I had to pull into a supermarket carpark close by and just sat there weeping as this played through.
I burst into tears when a friend called to tell me n the friends I was with thought I was crazy lol

1st time I heard this I was 18. 8 of us round my friends flat in Brixton. We would trip from friday night to sunday night. Just getting wasted on the old orange sunshine tabs. We would mainly play Floyd and Dylan and jam together. But I remember so clear how I reacted to this track. I saw music notes and waves just streaming into me and just was overcome with emotion. My sister had died a couple months before and I saw her and felt she said Its all OK. I met my wife to be the next week and was together 48 years till she passed. Music brings strong emotions and memories.

Dark Side of the Moon is an amazing compilation of music. One of the best albums of I've ever heard. I first heard this around 1972-73, and I still listen to it all these years later.
Clare Torry, the vocalist for TGGITS, got the equivalent of about $100 for her performance. She toured with Floyd for The Dark Side and I was fortunate enough to see the Milwaukee Cty Stadium show. I was absolutely blown away and utterly amazed when this little woman had the spot shown on her and she let loose. Some 50,000 people there and you could hear a pin drop while she sang....
some years back she actually got paid a lot of money when she started a lawsuit, and the FLOYD realized the unfairness and settled and took care of her

She listened to the backing track a couple of times, then she put on the cans and began singing an "Oh baby, oh baby" type of scat, which was not what they wanted at all. David Gilmour was the only person to give her any direction, and offered her a can of Heinekin beer. Next, she tried sounding like an instrument, which they immediately liked. When they began to record her; she sang two and a half takes before she felt that they had enough. I remember how it lasted in the top 200 from 1973 when it debuted until the mid or late 1980s.... There is nothing out there in my opinion that comes close to the Dark Side of the Moon album or even some other PF material (there is a lot of it out there!)

This piece is about death and Clair Tory nailed it. At the time, she was a session singer and was called in for this song by Alan Parsons who was producing this album. She started using words and they stopped her and said to basically react to the music and the theme. She makes it sound as if she’s fighting death and then succumbs to it...genius piece of work.

Clare Torry is by far the best vocalist I've ever heard. I've been listening to Pink Floyd since I was a teenager, and just recently found out she is a white woman from London. Amazing!! Unlike most singers, you can't even hear a break in her singing so she can take a breath.

Its Ok to cry Brother!! ReaI Men Do Cry! I cried when I put my best friend in the ground when I went home. We would drop acid in the Army amd then listen to Floyd. I didnt drop any when I threw dirt on him but I wept like a school girl listening to this song. Pink Floyd is great at making you feel some tyoe of way.

Firstly the guy who says at the beginning of the track "I am not frightened of dying, why should I be frightened of dying."etc.etc. was the doorman/security guy at Abbey Road Studios where the album was recorded, in answer to PFs general questions about the thoughts of all the different people who were employed in a minor capacity at Abbey Road at that time. Many of the whispered voices you hear on this Album are not made by the band members themselves. Clare Torrey who "Sang" this track was paid $50 for it but in the early 2000s received an out of court settlement from the band and was co-credited with writing it. It is the only song on the album that she sung on .All the other tracks that had female singers were session singers. Most of us have seen the Clare Torry video interview where she talks about this song but I remember an interview she gave long before TH-cam ,Google etc. where she specifically says that Dave Gilmour took her to one side and asked her if she could improvise her singing to imagine how she would feel what dying would be like. I first heard The Great Gig in The Sky in 74 and had no idea what the song was about but I was left stunned into a deep mental silence. I thought the singer was a beautiful black soul singer who had gone unrecognised by me. The song still moves me deeply in a wonderful way to this day.(P.S.The other 4 females on the rest of TDSOTM were all session singers and the one who has the most prominent voice on the tracks "Time, Brain Damage/Eclipse was a lady called Doris Troy who was born in The Bronx.)

Greatest reaction ever! I was honored to be at the Pulse concert and although Claire Torrie(?) was not there her spirit came out during the performance. I was stunned!! The music and the mix was perfect. If there was one moment in life I will always remember it was the Pink Floyd concert and The Great Gig in the Sky!!

There aren't a lot of reactors who listen to the whole albums because of copyright issues. Unfortunately, splitting up the songs is probably the only way to get these reactions up.
Money is the worse song on the album
There is no "worse song" on Dark Side Of The Moon. That's why some people say this album is overrated...its just that good, there isn't a single skippable song on here. With that being said, you sir are a certified fucking idiot.

I heard this album the first time in the 1977 when I was 15 years old, and my taste of music changed instantly. Nothing I have heard before (except for Bach) mattered anymore. This was my gateway to music for the soul.
That is the power of Pink Floyd! Has always been. They always have a way of moving you in some way. If you love this- you will love Pink Floyd- Us and Them!
