I'm just starting Elden Ring and I keep doing the same thing! So annoying to start a boss fight and immediately use a flask, waste it, then almost definitely get hit while I'm standing right next to the boss just standing there chugging. I don't know what game I've actually played that even uses that button as attack. I can't even think of one. So it's weird that I keep just doing that for some reason.

After following your settings i found something even better. Using a xbox controller: -Guard LB -Dodge and Dash LT -Jumping L (or what its called, where crouching was) With this you can dash and jump and still use the camera -Crouch is now on B so when you go out of menu you dont use your flask on accident -Use item RB -Skill RT -X attack -Y heavy attack -A interact
Happy someone brought this up. The whole claw grip thing has given me issues with my hand, as I’m always running while in combat, and I normally dont lock on. I went ahead and ordered a Dualsense Edge (200 USD…), so what I will do is to use the back buttons for rolling/running. That way I can hold a good grip on the controller and still play the game with the normal button configurations. Cant believe its not being talked about more
I also switched the left & top face buttons to light/heavy attacks since DS1. I personally never understood how the left trigger was weapon skill & left button was block, I switched those immediately. I feel as if my control scheme is intuitive for people willing to have jump as right trigger, as you do. Buttons for Xbox: LT - Block LB - Skill RT - Jump RB - Item A - Dodge (I bound this to my left back-paddle, I have a PowerA enhanced Xbox controller) B - Interact X - Attack Y - Strong For two handing, I simply press B & Y with my thumb.
As a Souls vet this controller layout causes me so much pain. Heck, as just video game vet in general, having any button other than X for jump pains me. Also, sprinting and jumping onto the triggers? That just seems like the most inefficient place to put such vital commands, since it adds an unnecessary delay to those actions. You do you, man, but the only thing I've ever changed from default was to swap square/triangle.
quite late, but at Elden ring there is already the delay saddly, and it does make some sense, as i use L2/LT to dash at Guilty Gear, so some ppl might also use it elsewhere
I have some similar controls but I kept it a little simple. This is how I like to play. Running/Dodge: R2 Trigger Potions/Items: R1 Bumper Jumping: X Interact: Circle Triangle: Heavy Attack Square: Light Attack Block: L1 Bumper Skill/AoW: L2 Bumper
I just started playing a little bit of Elden Ring Today and my button settings are the exact same. I kept accidently pressing Square when I wanted to attack. The R1 R2 for attack just seemed awkward for me.
This setup is somewhat close to an optimal configuration, but I have to disagree with the right triggers since your index and middle finger naturally rest there. Square and Triangle really mess with manual aiming while manipulating the camera, but I really do prefer the L1 as being my roll/dodge. Blocking is typically less useful than dodging, so unless I plan to block/counter/parry through pve/pvp, I definitely swap L1 for my dodge, while L2 remains a weapon art/parry. I have a few other configurations for different circumstances, and my mind seems to handle the changes well, so on pure casting builds, it's a totally separate setup since light/heavy weapon art matters less than right/left casting. Glad someone offered their alternatives for the players starting out. The bear claw is really overrated and is more likely to cause arthritis/carpal tunnel from poor ergonomics.
I had purchased Elden ring and for two months I refused to play the game because the controls didn’t feel right and buy the grace of god I found this video
These controls feel so much better, I was getting frustrated with one boss because I couldnt turn the way I wanted to and sprint at the same time, so I kept dying alot. A relief for my fingers and from the frustration with this boss, thank you so much.
Although I am one of the thousands of veterans at souls games out there... And even though I felt a little bit triggered for someone changing the padron... I have to fucking admit. This is great. I literally saw it and changed it immediately. Absolutely loved the idea hahahahhaha
Just made this switch, and it was instantly more intuitive. Thanks for the tips! The only change I made was to map spell switching to the left stick press because I'm constantly hitting the right weapon swap when I'm scrolling spells 🤓 the claw grip to crouch is way less uncomfortable than when I'm swapping spells in the frenzy of action in a fast battle
I love this setup and took it, however square remained the same, circle is regular attack and triangle is heavy attack. Solves the menu issue too. Got used to it quickly, it plays better for sure!
Awesome! Once you set it up just practice jumping around the world first, THEN practice on your mount, THEN practice jump attacking enemies! :) There are your COACHING drills... get it? lol
Your settings make a whole lot of sense. Dunno how much more efficient they would be for those who have been playing with the original settings for the past decade. They're kind of etched into the brain, merged with the very being so to speak. For those new to the franchise, your settings are probably the way to go through, as they seem pretty intuitive
Hold the fuck up.... Switching to using a weapon with both hands is hell lot easier this way. We can just press X and [ ] at the same time ( or X and A on the Xbox )
You have a Dualshock 4. The real answer is to get yourself the Back Button Attachment. It'll change how you play forever. But indeed what you're saying makes perfect sense if you don't have back buttons. That's how I used to map my buttons.
Will be hard to switch from the default ones even when i know they are carbage. Default run key at the B which in turn makes you unable to rotate the camera well lol

Switched to these settings and IMMEDIATELY felt 100% more comfortable. The only thing I still struggle with is summoning Torrent from up in my pouch menu while moving, but with this I think I'll figure that out too.

Have you thought of a way to switch right(or left) weapons without stopping movement? I saw a suggestion to remap L3 or R3 to do the weapon swap, but it did some wonky stuff to my pouch slots. I haven't figured out a better solution yet.
@@DungeonCoachGaming here the configuration I use . Similar his Square : Weak attack Triangle: Attack Rb: Right armament Lb: Left armament Use Item : L3 Skill: R2 Sprint: L2 Examine: Left D pad Crouch: Right D pad Lock: on R3
why not take it a step further and have all movement controlled by the left hand? i.e. LB for jump, LT for roll/run, and assign RB to block or left hand weapon, RT to ash of war? In that case all movement (save for camera) is left hand, all attack is right hand
Problem with this for me is not having use of the right stick when fighting multiple enemies. I dont want to be moving my thumb away from the stick during battle unless I'm rolling or jumping. I'm always locked on when I do that so it doesn't matter. The sprinting is annoying though. All they needed to do was bind crouch to some other input so you could sprint with l3 then it would be perfect. Maybe pressing L3+R3 at the same time to crouch since you don't use it that often, only when trying to be stealthy.
Makes sense. Older souls games never had jump before. Now only if theres a way to easily use ashes of war on your left hand weapon without needing to 2 hand it.

i have a pc, today i just bought my first controller to play elden ring. it will take some time to get used to. your setting seems efficient I'm gonna try it
My biggest issue in this games was my dodge roll not working when I press circle. I just swapped it to L1 and it's no long registering my dodge roll as a run. Dodge roll should be on 1 of the shoulder buttons, no matter the layout you choose.
Dodge roll is kinda odd cause its dodge on release, has to be a quick tap, if there is abit of a delay then it doesnt wok cause it kinda goes into run mode, used to drive me nuts not working till I noticed this
This vid is super interesting, but I’m too set in my ways. I just use two back paddles: Right paddle for run/dodge and Left paddle for target lock on/off. Huuuuge improvement in PvP since using paddles in this way.
I adopted this setup, but used my paddles to make sure my attack buttons were mapped as well, so I can keep camera movement going, roll and jump and attack while my thumbs never leave the analogs and the only time I move my fingers is for item use/incantations etc.
Played my first couple of hours today and I immediately felt I need to change the controls. Mostly because the way this game plays is similar enough to Monster Hunter that my brain constantly tries to use the wrong buttons for attacks. Basic controls seem....tedious to say the least.
@Dungeon Coach Gaming are you able to change the control settings on this game in the option menu? I want to get this game but the control settings were not in my best interest. Please let me know. Thanks
This is the best setting I've seen. Maybe if I had switched from the beginning, I could get used to it, but claw is law ;) I definitely struggled with it, but I can see switching someday.
never played a souls game before this and i cant stand the fact that running hurts my hand. played the game for 30 hours now but will have to change thank you so much
I actually set my xBox controller to the same as yours, but keeping the Y (triagle) and X (square) default, B (circle) and A (X) for heavy/light attack just because I can press Y and B for switching between one/two handed, pressing A+X (X + square) still effective though. With this setup, we lost the dash + dual wield attack because you'll have to hold the dash/dodge button for the dash happens, then press the attack (the same for dashing while guarding, but I think most of us are not doing it). Unless, the index finger is covering the two buttons so we can press the LB (L1) while holding LT (L2), or using middle finger for the LT (L2) and index finger for the LB (L1). It's just one of all the moves, and some of us can totally live without that move. The backstep + dual wield attack is still doable. So here, we're just trading off something for others. P/S: The LT, RT (L2, R2) should be placed under the controller, so we can use our middle finger to touch them =))
mine since DS1 (but for elden ring): LB Block LT Skill RT Interact/Run RB Estus A Jump (my favorite games are platformers, I couldn't put this in any other button) B Roll (I used the steam configuration to change these things, so I roll here, but run on RT) X Attack Y Strong Attack in DS1 I put parry and defense on LB (it was two different buttons in that game) but also, I had used the steam configuration to change LT to a aim downsights button, so he would automatically stop aiming when I stopped holding the button, and RT turned into a attack when holding it (but it was technically just a defending button)
I used your controls but I swapped left trigger and right trigger because holding left trigger while pushing the left stick up to run with the same hand felt really weird. Overall good video
I left mine default but I have 8bitdo Pro2 controllers with mappable back/bottom buttons so I mapped them to mirror the dodge roll run and block buttons. they duplicate the original buttons so they aren't extra commands, but I find it easier to press those back buttons in the heat of battle. I like my jump on the A key and the attack buttons make sense in default because then you can aim at the same time you're moving your characters view.
Run and roll being on the same button is so frustrating. It means that roll is on button release, meaning it feels really unresponsive, and if you press roll for just a few frames too long, you don't get a roll, and there's no way to change it.
Just start playing Eden Ring in 2024 and I saw your controller tips and tricks. Cheers Ps. I'm using a Xbox controller. What's the button for mount? A + Left stick?
I just switched my LB/L1 and B/O but the L2 would’ve been even smarter. I just never use power stance or shield so I never use that button. Great vid. And super obvious
I might be insane but: A=Jump X=Activate Y=Light atk B=Heavy atk RT=Roll RB=Skill LT=Block LB=Consumables RJ=Crouch* LJ=Lock on Potions/Flask/Torrent are in shortcuts. *Probably my years of CoD 😅

Thank you! I’ve been playing claw and my index finger feels like it’s about to fall off.
You're welcome! I hate having to do a claw set up too! lol
@Dungeon Coach Gaming are you able to change the control settings on this game in the option menu? I want to get this game but the control settings were not in my best interest. Please let me know. Thanks
Thansk man this helped a lot
This is the best setting I've seen. Maybe if I had switched from the beginning, I could get used to it, but claw is law ;)
I definitely struggled with it, but I can see switching someday.
@5:24 “Combat mode - Combat mode”
OMFG - I straight lost it right here… OMG … trouble breathing…. 😂
I recommend switching L3 to down to avoid accidental mount off
Thank u for the great video, Matt Parkman.
great tips. thanks for sharing!
never played a souls game before this and i cant stand the fact that running hurts my hand. played the game for 30 hours now but will have to change thank you so much
Definitely helped a lot! I don’t know wether or not you still read comments but would you have any advice on what I should do for dark souls 3?
Dam feels so good perfect settings! Getting ready for the dlc. Thank you!
I'm adopting it. Been playing fighting games on top of it, so the light and heavy attack setup makes sense, thanks!
Love these settings!
Thanks! I probably put TOO much thought into this! lol
Great settings indeed, this is a great help
So glad I’ve learned to change settings before starting the game or even the tutorial.
P/S: The LT, RT (L2, R2) should be placed under the controller, so we can use our middle finger to touch them =))
I almost got the same controls. thank you for the input. wanted to start eldenring with a good control setup
Very very good job man. I had changed mines and their were similar to yours, but I needed a video to complete my setup. Thanks from France.
mine since DS1 (but for elden ring):
LB Block
LT Skill
RT Interact/Run
RB Estus
A Jump (my favorite games are platformers, I couldn't put this in any other button)
B Roll (I used the steam configuration to change these things, so I roll here, but run on RT)
X Attack
Y Strong Attack
in DS1 I put parry and defense on LB (it was two different buttons in that game) but also, I had used the steam configuration to change LT to a aim downsights button, so he would automatically stop aiming when I stopped holding the button, and RT turned into a attack when holding it (but it was technically just a defending button)
I used your controls but I swapped left trigger and right trigger because holding left trigger while pushing the left stick up to run with the same hand felt really weird. Overall good video
i've played dark souls games for years and i cant believe i didnt think about some of these lmao it makes so much sense
@God Of Lyf I’m not?
Bro, this was awesome. Huuuuge help. Thank you so much! My hand was hurting from claw and this just made a big difference. Peace :)
YES! I love being able to help people enjoy the game more! Thanks for the comment!
Thank you for helping
A was jump on x box on bottom , X was the left attack just like you got,i will try that.
Great binding bro. Im using the same now.
Nothing beats having back paddles though. Sprint and roll on left back paddle and jump on right.
I just started the game and maybe I'm impatient, but I don't like the control setup. So thanks, I'm going to give this one a whirl.
Great button layout, thanks for your time. BTW you look like you could pass for Ryan Reynolds brother lol
Is there nothing this man won't homebrew? IS NOTHING SACRED? :D
HEY You homebrewed your DESK!!!
btw if you have back buttons on your controller this video doesnt mean anything to you as long as you use those buttons
I use the DS4 back buttons with sprinting on the left. That's the only issue I had with the controls (sprinting with circle).
Run and roll being on the same button is so frustrating. It means that roll is on button release, meaning it feels really unresponsive, and if you press roll for just a few frames too long, you don't get a roll, and there's no way to change it.
Typical for controller games.
Good setup thanks
Sprint on L2 makes since. But Jump on R2?! Thats just wild.
Just start playing Eden Ring in 2024 and I saw your controller tips and tricks. Cheers
Ps. I'm using a Xbox controller. What's the button for mount? A + Left stick?
Is there a dead zone setting for the left and right analog sticks?
I just switched my LB/L1 and B/O but the L2 would’ve been even smarter. I just never use power stance or shield so I never use that button. Great vid. And super obvious
how do you left and right attack on the horse?
mhhh
I might be insane but:
A=Jump
X=Activate
Y=Light atk
B=Heavy atk
RT=Roll
RB=Skill
LT=Block
LB=Consumables
RJ=Crouch*
LJ=Lock on
Potions/Flask/Torrent are in shortcuts.
*Probably my years of CoD 😅
I only swapped X with triangle, like how it was in DS3
Man! the button layout feels so bizarre! Thanks for this updated change, mine was slightly similar but I had “X” to jump… I like the triggers for action buttons. Great simple video. Thanks!
Won’t lie I already love it
this makes so much more sense, also on a xbox controller
I wish running was bounded to jumping, so I would dodge on press, not release.
i've read that rewasd(on pc) can remap the gyro of the controller(ps4/switch) .
anyone tried? (for potion and so on)
video starts at 2:30
Could only imagine the late rolls from using a trigger for dodge
Late? Adjust your trigger deadzones to fix that delay
Gonna try it out
