    It feels extremely weird to refer to a point before a ramp up as a soft cap. A soft cap implies diminishing returns past that point, not increasing returns.

      @Eyezick-l5z 2 ปีที่แล้ว +206

    • @kiu1432
      @kiu1432 2 ปีที่แล้ว +588

      That's a good point and the main the difference between a soft cap and a breakpoint. In this video it is used interchangeably which creates confusion

    • @connorjensen9699
      @connorjensen9699 2 ปีที่แล้ว +90

      It doesn't have to have that implication. Tthe term soft cap comes from meaning a speculative minimum amount of funds required for a project. Its also used in sports, which I think is where that implication comes in. But that isn't locked into the word in an RPG context and doesn't really have a hard set meaning here. Threshold or breakpoint would have been clearer, but soft cap is not wrong.

    For dedicated spell casters, 40 Mind may as well be the “soft cap”. That’s 220 FP, equal to a max upgraded blue flask. Anything more is a one time bonus of FP per sitting at Grace. Maybe 45, just because you rarely drain yourself down to 0, but any more is a waste of the blue flask’s potential.

      I actually push mine to 48 Mind and equip the Cerulean Seed Talisman. Allows me to spam a few more spells than I usually could without it and fill my bar to full from empty. Although the Primal Glintstone Blade reduces cost so I can blast more as well, I find the draw back of losing that much HP to be not worth it for my battlemage build. Also with that much fp recovery, I feel more comfortable having a couple more hp flasks. Obviously this is personal preference but I would say definitely worth the slot if you prefer more points in Mind.

    Also one thing with strength you never mentioned that is also in Dark souls, two-handing a weapon gives you a 1.5x boost to your strength which is why if you have 12 and need 18 to wield a weapon, you can only wield it properly by two handing. 12 x 1.5 = 18, so when putting this into consideration (which by the way the boost is only with strength) if you know you are going to just be running around two handing a big ass weapon then you really only need 66 strength, because when you two hand its the equivalent to 99 strength, and you cant go further than that if you raise your strength past that and two hand it.
    Edit: Yeah nevermind this game added that you can go further than 99, up to a theoretical 148.5 when two handing

      Ds2 also introduced powerstancing, requiring 1.5×STR AND 1.5×DEX the higher requirement if your weapons. So, to powerstance shortswords (I think it's 10/12 or 10/7, I don't remember), you need 15/18 STR/DEX, and 2 Shortswords. Powerstancing causes you to attack with both weapons with L1. L2 still parries if your weapon has that animation, and the R buttons only attack with the right hand weapon.
      This was mostly replaced in DS3 with the Twinned weapons. Or the Farron Greatsword.

  • @derkaffeenator9172

    Hmm strange, back in DS3 we used to call the first fall off in stats as the softcap, and the second fall of as hardcap as everything beyond that didn’t make a lot of sense leveling. I mean, it’s pretty clear that you can’t go beyond 99, so that way it was easier to differentiate between those two caps, instead of calling it Softcap 1 or 2.

    One thing, you put Arcane down as a spellcaster stat but for the most part its far more of a bleed/poision scaling stat. It's a perquisite to use certain incantations and sorceries, however, except for the dragon communion casting tool it doesn't actually scale with any casting tools efficiently nor really have its own devoted casting spells, its kinda like when certain staves require strength to equip but for the spells themselves.
    Damage-wise it scales usually from weapons devoted to bleed or poison build up and it increases the build-up of the status effects. That is why the dragon communion scales off arcane as a large amount of them are status-effect based and the tool actually increases the build up of status effects caused by incantations more than usual (I think potentially ignoring madness but not tested to be certain).
    So really its the stat you want to pump up alongside the other relevant stat to your weapons/build. If you're doing a dagger-bleed build then your probably going to want to focus arcane and dex pretty equally for example. It's also worth noting that as a stat its pretty inconsistent and either feels broken or useless due to the inherent nature of different status effects being resisted/immune by different bosses and enemies. Especially rough during the early levels where your more reliant on the procs for your damage.

    • @KamiGG
      @KamiGG  2 ปีที่แล้ว +72

      I just finished up my next video going over staves.
      While doing it, I noticed exactly what you mentioned.
      Arcane scaling with them is pretty poor.
      Definitely better used as a stat to increase your bleed build up in dex builds.
      Good call 👍

      Arcane does effect Incantations damage but it soft caps at 20 and 45, it also increases several Ashes of Wars damage.

    • @Sljm8D
      @Sljm8D 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hi, any weapon or tool with Arcane scaling will increase the status buildup of poison, bleed, sleep, and madness for the weapon, ash of war, or spell that inflicts it. Frostbite, death, and scarlet rot do not scale with Arcane. This applies to weapon buff spells if the spell catalyst scales with Arcane and weapon grease or buffing ashes of war if the weapon itself scales with Arcane.

    • @Dhern094
      @Dhern094 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      you can also use occult scaling which goes off your arcane.

    • @ianlindstrom2019
      @ianlindstrom2019 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There is also the Albinauric Staff for scaling sorceries with Arcane, similar to the dragon communion seal for incantations. It has the same limitation that it soft caps lower and doesn't help meet prerequisites, but is good if you decide to do a hybrid built instead of go all-in on arcane.
      Overall Arcane is the dabbler stat. It can scale any category of thing in the right circumstances, but for any one of those things there's a better stat array. Except statuses. That's the one thing Arcane is best at.

    great video. I think doing one for lower levels, ie a guide for how to level up over the course of a normal play through would help a lot of players. Most of the time when people are asking about their stat distributions I see them at levels 40-60, and sometimes up to 90. By the time someone gets to the 120+ range they've usually got a handle on this stuff.

    • @GamerKey91
      @GamerKey91 2 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      There's a good rule of thumb for that. Based on how damage scales in ER most of your early damage increases will come from weapon upgrades, because the stat scaling on weapons improves with upgrade levels and is pretty abysmal on unupgraded weapons.
      So starting out, do it like this:
      Put as many points into STR/DEX/INT/FTH/ARC as you need to wield the gear you want to use. No more!
      Put the rest into VIG/MND/END with a priority on VIG.
      I've seen too many people pump one of the "damage stats" early for at that point very marginal increases in damage, all while struggling with encounters because they get 1- or 2-shot due to low vigor.

    that's an amazing video. i didn't know the little details about the progressive ramp up on some stats especially.
    i noticed something you didn't touch on at all is the peculiarity of strength scaling. indeed, just like all the other damage scaling stats, the typical softcaps are located at 20/40/60/80, and they will be more or less noticeable based on the weapon scaling. however, strength has a unique mechanic that completely throw out the window everything: two handing.
    when you are playing a weapon two handed, each level of strength is effectively 1.5 levels of strength for the damage scaling. this throws off many considerations as you reach your softcaps much earlier, and also this makes extra points of strength past those softcaps more valuable.
    if i take as an example a heavy giant crusher +25 with it's super high strength scaling. you need 40 str just to wield it two hands (effectively 60 str). from 40-50 str, you add ~7.1dmg/lvl. from 50-60 str, you add 4.1dmg/lvl. from 60-90 str, you get a flat 2.7dmg/lvl for a very long plateau of 30 levels. and it's only once you're trying to push it to 99 that you see a slight decrease and only gain 2.55 dmg per level...
    so once you have hit all the key values you need in the other stats, pushing past the effective 80 str softcap (~54 str when two handing) can still be worth it has it yields more than 2 points of damage per level, which will be further increased by any buff you use. going from 60 to 99 str is 39 levels, and add 104 dmg or an ~11.4% increase. the investment is not cost effective, but the final result is sizeable, 10% more damage means every 10 hits you land on a boss, there's one hit you won't have to land, and you're saving a bit of safety and time on that. compared to investing those 39 levels into, for example, vigor past the rank 60, gaining 200 hp from it (~10% increase too), and still getting killed by enemies in 3 hits anyways. similar thing with focus and endurance, once you have enough to cover your normal consumption and a bit of margin, adding more doesn't change a thing.

    For the roll the difference are the recovery time , even at heavy roll you have the exact Iframe as light , just your recovery time is higher so you will get bubish 90% of the time at medium roll the recovery is the same as the light , at light roll your backstep has less recovery than medium. Also the distance of your roll are longer than medium .
    So i resume :
    - Heavy : less distance, same Iframe , higher recovery time
    -Medium : normal distance , same Iframe , normal recovery time
    -Light : Higher distance, same Iframe, normal recovery time, backstep has less recovery time then medium

    So... from what I understand about the term "soft cap" is that it represents a decision point with logical reasons for stopping there (diminished returns), when you also have the option to continue. In that line of reasoning, there is no such thing as a "soft cap" if the stat jumps UP, only if it jumps DOWN in value. I've heard people call spots where stats increase dramatically as "soft bottoms" or "soft starts" because usually you might put points into a stat kind of slowly, maybe just focusing what's needed for a spell or piece of gear, but then when you're close to the soft start, you START pumping that stat up hard because the value is too good to put anywhere else (depending on build).

    You’re correct in assuming that the equip load affects your i frames. With a faster roll you get more invincibility frames during the roll, although not necessary it is helpful if you don’t run a shield or heavy armor. You can easily get a light equip load with 40+ endurance as long as you stick with lighter gear, maybe some heavier pieces, but you just have to find a good mix that you can stand to look at. Currently I run the cleanrot greaves and gloves with Alberans cloak and the noble mask doing a int/faith build with a staff and talisman in each hand

    High Endurance is extremely important for Strength based tanky two-hander builds because you want to wear heavy equipment for most fights (unless the enemy is super aggressive, which forces you to dodge and run a lot). I recommend roughly 60 Endurance as your base stat as it allows you to have a medium load regardless of the weight of your equipment. You can equip Endurance talismans to bridge the gap until you reach 60 base Endurance.
    Furthermore, more Endurance means you don't have to worry so much about recovery. This will be a life saver in many battles, and it's also generally good QoL.
    So the numbers that you want to aim for are highly dependent on your choice of equipment. For the mentioned Strength build, even a small increase in Endurance can be game changing as it might just allow you to use one better talisman, and that could make all the difference in your combat effectiveness.
    I'd assume that it's the same for mages. Greater Endurance allows you to cast more spells in a row, and that'll win you more fights and also add QoL.

    • @mrw210
      @mrw210 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      There's actually a different way to think about FP/Mind, that's how much FP it gets you per rest. At 40mind, your FP pool is equal to the amount a maxed out flask restores, so gaining FP beyond that is only giving you that raw amount of 6 FP per grace stop; However points before that are effectively giving you the raw amount multiplied by the number of FP flasks you carry.
      You can go a few points more just because you aren't going to always perfectly bottom out at 0, but there's definitely a drop in functional value at 40.

You do NOT want to fat-roll or mid roll against her unless you have some kind of secret strategy up your sleeve that I don't know about. @@emuemu8428 It's also wrong.
      The terms soft and hard cap didn't originate from Souls. In other contexts (such as finance), they're defined as this video describes. Soft cap is a point of diminishing return and hard cap is the actual maximum investment possible.
      The confusion comes from the erroneous assumption that there's only one soft cap.

      @@emuemu8428 I think you'll find that when the majority of people who use a word use it a certain way, that's what the word means. That's how language works.
      Therefore, since Souls players are a minority of the people who use it, and only some of them use it as you described, they are deploying the word incorrectly.
      Rather than doubling down on using an understandable misinterpretation of the meaning both linguistically and etymologically of a word, perhaps accept that your community made a mistake.
      Knowing that the hard cap is 99 isn't meaningless information, because not all games use 99 as their max value. Nioh 2 for example is a popular Souls like that uses 200 as its hard cap for stats.
      In Elden Ring, stats often have 3 soft caps, so this tendency toward using hard cap doesn't make sense for disambiguation either.
      Allow me to suggest alternatives:
      Major/minor softcap
      First/second/third/nth softcap
      Soft floor (e.g. >20 Mind, returns go up)
      These don't conflict with terminology in other disciplines.

      @@Sljm8D TLDR, your premise is wrong at the beginning so I didn't read the rest. The souls community usage is all that matters about word definitions when engaging with the souls community. Anyway, I'm donezo with you.

    1. great video! exactly what i was looking for. AND 2: im pretty sure this goes without saying, but TO NEW COMERS, this isnt a guide for soft caps for a one all be all build (hard cap yes at 99 everything, which i have never done in any souls game haha), its just showing soft caps per attribute. As in if you wanna use magic ur not gonna dump points into strength/dex.And vice versa with faith/intelligence if ur going for a hard hitting physical damage weapon character. The long and short of it is follow this guide and invest in points for the build you wanna specialize in, and not take this guide as a "oh if i dont max everything im gonna suck" vid. Not that Kami even intended to suggest thats what the vid is about hehe. loved it bro!

    The biggest issue with 12 str being a good place to stop for sorcery/spell casting builds is Darkmoon Greatsword is just so good you'll want to invest 4 more points into strength for that lol.

    I would say bring scaling stats to 70. There is plenty of gear that boosts stats and 70 seems a good margin of 10 for not going over 80

    Can you make a video explaining how important the stats under the body section are? Like robustness, vitality, etc.? No one has a video on this. What number should we focus on?

    • @muhammadsaduddin308
      @muhammadsaduddin308 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It just resistance build up, if you increase it, it will make status like poison, rot, bleed, and death build slower.
      I think the most important is robustness, which increase you bleed resistance. Most enemy have it and you don't have spell that could reset bleed build up. Poison and rot could be cured by spell, and death is too niche, only a small percentage of enemy have that.
