Silent Hill: Downpour’s preorder bonus was a code for a locker, but the code wasn’t personalised per copy so you can just look it up and use it anyway lol
That was a real thing with pre-order bonuses for the PS2/GCN/Xbox generation, since DLC was impractical on those consoles. Black the FPS did this with a cheat code that unlocks a M249 SAW (...for only the first level), and The Sims 2 Castaway did it for a retailer "exclusive" clothing bonus.
I didn't know they were still doing this on later consoles and as late as Downpour's release, lol.
I believe Burnout Paradise did this as well. There were codes for unlocking GameStop and Wal-Mart cars that were super overpowered compared to most of the cars in the game. But you could just look up the codes online and punch them in on any copy and get the cars!

Section 8 did this as well.... It was like Pre-order skins or something like that. I remember borrowing the game from a friend then looking online for all the pre-order cheat codes..... I liked the game but glad I didn't pay for it.

The Saboteur also came with a collector's version type thing that came with an in game knife skin. The knife you can hardly ever see because it only plays in about 3 animations and is physically tiny.
Still a great game. At least pandemic went out with a bang.

It came with a car and some mini games too but you will find a better car and forget the mini games after playing them once and the nudity is only in one area of the game
The pre-order bonus for No Mans Sky was probably the worst I've ever seen.
You got a special ship. A ship with one extra inventory slot. A ship that at the time you couldn't store and you'd lose as soon as you'd upgrade your ship (which you'd do pretty quickly).
And I'm pretty sure you only got it once, only one playthrough could have it (and again, it'd be left behind and lost forever within an hour of playing).
You can use all the preorder content on all save files - started playing again recently and realized that
the worst pre-order bonus for no man's sky was the disappointment of playing a 1/4 finished game.
Also, you got No Man's Sky. Eww.

The signed copies were available to customers too, but they only made 1000 of them.

The real shit bonus was wasted time having to reinstall your previous version of Windows.

Then again, the system I was running it on was a Pentium 166Mhz with like...4 megs of RAM xD and most of the time the types of games I would play was simple stuff like Doom, Duke Nukem 3D, or emulate Pokemon Red/Blue/Yellow lol.

Yep, yep it definitely did. Also had the whole god awful "augment your preorder" bullshit.
Worse! It had something called "augment your pre-order", which unlocked more stuff in the game the more people pre-ordered it. After major backlash from pretty much everyone, they scrapped the idea and we haven't seen it again; yet.
At least those were useful.
On top of that, those consumables were worthless. I mean, the items themselves are useful but you don't need them at all. The only reason you'd need them is if you don't like Deus Ex and need some advantage to clear the game. But if you don't like the game, then why play it in the first place?
I have those pre-order consumables and I have never touched them. The game was released on 2016. We are in 2020 (at the time of writing this) and I still have those items. That shows how useful the are.

I remember a few years ago when one of the Call Of Duty games had a $500 "Special edition" that included a cheap mini-fridge that you could buy at walmart for $90.

I remember that one of the Phoenix Wright games had a pre-order bonus of a pointing finger stylus. Sounds nice, but it scratched up my screen pretty good after a month of use, compared to the one included with the system.
Pokémon Diamond and Pearl had the dialga stylus toppers.
You just know kids lost those things in like a day m.
Most of those gimmicky styluses were pretty bad. I got a Pac-Man one that I don't remember where I got, it's 3 times as tall as a normal stylus and really awkward to hold. And of course you can't store them in the system's stylus slot either.

I remember when I first bought the game as a kid, the excitement I felt putting the disk in... then the shock of seeing it make my Wii crash, and the utter confusion of seeing it boot back up with the PS3 startup. Like, how did it even do that?

I really liked the Hovernyan keychain I got when I preordered Yokai Watch 2, so I was really excited for what I would get for preordering Pokemon Sun and Moon, I mean surely the bigger franchise would give out nicer stuff, right?
I got 100 in-game Pokeballs, something you could get after about 20 minutes of gameplay.
I mean, ultra sun and moon gave you a speacial pokemon you can’t get anywhere else
I got a poster for pre ordering the game at gamestop, and other stores were supposedly giving out posters and/or other stuff too. Maybe it's just where you bought it.
I miss when pre-ordering the new Pokemon games had cool bonuses; I remember Ruby and Sapphire had coins of Groudon/Kyogre, Diamond and Pearl had DS styluses with Dialga/Palkia on them

I heard someone claim that they pre order, accept their “bonus”, then cancel. I have no idea if that’s possible, but if it is/was, that was pretty clever of them

I did that once, by accident. I preordered Resident Evil: Operation Raccoon City (PS3), got the preorder code, used it, and then looked up reviews that said that the game was utter crap, so I returned the game. I bought it later when it was like 10 bucks, and still had the DLC I put the code in for.
It used to be really easy. I usually got codes instantly for certain preorders, and wondered what would happen if I had returned the games. Then, they wised up and only gave the codes after release.
@@Dreadjaws like how back in the day when The Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time Master Quest was the pre-order bonus for The Legend of Zelda Wind Waker. People who hated the art style of Wind Waker would cancel the pre-order after they get OoT MQ.
It's not like they have to pay for producing a figurine or something, though. They just shit out some new codes. Stores and developer dont really care about the handful of people that do this. If you're so set to play the game at launch, you're not going to want to wait, and people who are smart enough to wait for a game to be half price or less, probably also dont care about some alt skin.
To stores, it's people that wouldnt have pre-ordered anyway, getting a freebie that costs them nothing.
Guess it cóuld work in rare instances that it's a not-quit-crap game, with actual content as a pre-order. But then, how many times do they give away decent stuff that's actually worth having.
Was thinking about replaying The Saboteur yesterday. Loved how its all grey and as you start destroying and taking over areas it becomes sunny and colourful. Was excellent.
Id love a sequel or something of that game, Ill admit i lucked out and the used version still had a working boobies code; i didn't think it was a terrible pre-order bonus at the time ha-ha!
The 25 Extra Lives deal was done before a Patch update.
Before you couldn't get lives if you got 100 Rings, which a LOT of people complained about, so SEGA eventually put it in an update, so the Pre-Order bonus gave you more to hope you won't notice the lack of 100 Ring 1-Ups.
Though if you want to Life Grind, then do the Yoshi's Island level, and get all the Yoshi's, once you do, you get about 50 or 60 lives
Shame the life grind strat doesn't work on the PC version, which got the OTHER silly pre-order bonus: a boss rush with a NiGHTs into Dreams aesthetic that ended up being the only "DLC" on that version.
I thought PC got all the content eventually.

Pre-ordered from Gamestop, used the code for Steam.
Never got that multiplayer outfit. And when I talked to Steam about it, they instead granted me _every other cosmetic_ in the co-op. Because they "weren't able" to grant the one costume with it's pre-order exclusivity.

Honestly a demo isn't a bad pre order bonus however in this date and age it's something they could(and probably should) just throw up for everyone to download. It lets you see how the game is so if it's bad you can cancel your pre order.
Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light on DS in onc place Preorder Bonus was a Digital Poster so a Jpeg.
That's a pretty funny story for what would eventually evolve into Bravely Default, i.e. one of the most celebrated JRPGs in recent times.

The 8' inch MAXIMO figure I got from GameStop back in 02' was probably one of my favorite pre-ordered bonuses.

It's just a copy of a game changing ownership... but gaming companies only like you if you buy games directly from them (and at full price.)
That's because they don't see a cent from the sale of used games. Some publishers are just that greedy.
@@Chaos89P Pretty much holding a game's multiplayer mode for ransome is probably the greediest thing I've ever heard of a company doing. I feel like that tops even loot boxes on a scale of sheer greed.
That used game fine really got out of hand during the Xbox 360 and PS3 years. They even did that with some single player stuff like the Catwoman part of Arkham City.
I guess they think it's bad because the money doesn't go to the games industry? People used to argue this point very seriously, some still do I think.
11:50 - I mean. I know that's just some fun snark. But Loot Boxes are still infinitely worse than Online Passes. Online Passes, as shitty as they are, are at least a $10 fine you pay once and then don't have to pay anymore. Loot Boxes have no "you're done paying" moment and are designed to get you to pay as many times as possible. They're psychological manipulation that can get the right people to pay thousands, even tens of thousands of dollars. So yeah, compared to a $10 fine to play online, I still think Loot Boxes are bad.

I think The Saboteur was the first game that I saw actual nudity in (as opposed to censored nudity) and I had no idea about this!

Also labels the start and end of the scam promotion so you can just skip it and enjoy the video.
Two things on Sonic Lost World. First, the ease of getting extra lives in-game was added in a patch post-launch. You used to not get extra lives when collecting 100 rings; the patch added that in. That one change made the game significantly easier. So at launch, the pre-order bonus was actually helpful, albeit still stupid.
Second, Sonic Generations was good, man. What are you on about?

He did pre order ds3 just to cheese 50% of it. Cuz he refused to patch it. 1.00 was still beta build and bosses had way lower hp.
Very minor correction, at release Sonic Lost Worlds didn't hand out lives, in fact it was quite stingy. They actually patched in the 100rings = 1 extra life, and bonus lives you can receive in the game a full month after the game's release. (They also fixed the gating of content behind ring walls, thank god)
Now, post patch it rains lives, thankfully.

I'd run the numbers, but I've got Sonic in my blackist, and can't be bothered since they can't be bothered on that website to divvy the titles into separate tags.
Not that I blame them, because then it'd mean having to go though all that naff art and picking out the 2-3 images that specifically reference Tail's Adventure.
Here's one that doesn't get shat on enough: If you preordered Digimon Story: Cyber Sleuth, you got an Agumon that was dressed as Tai, the team leader from the first season of the Digimon anime. However, if you ever Digivolved him into anything else, you'd permanently lose that unique costume, and Digivolving it back to Agumon would just give you a bog standard Agumon instead of your special preorder one.
Ubisoft did the same thing with online game passes. I remember the thing that came with AC Revelations said something like "Ubisoft Passport is designed to allow you to access online gameplay".
Designed to allow us? They make it sound like they're doing us a favour.
You know that gaming has became an accepted form of media when the sponsored add is about hair loss prevention.
The best preorder bonuses are physical collectables. Or getting another entire game for free. Best example was Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, where preordering the game netted you a disc containing both a GameCube port of Ocarina of Time, and the Master Quest version, which included redesigned dungeons intended to make the game more challenging, and was basically what Nintendo could salvage from the planned expansion to OOT from its time being developed for the N64 DD, before the peripheral was discontinued for nearly nonexistent sales and the game was released on a cartridge instead.
That and Pokemon Colosseum's preorder bonus was a disc that let you download an infinite number of Jirachis onto your Ruby and Sapphire games.
When I saw the title I was thinking about Dragon Ball FighterZ offering to let you have the games unlockable characters without having to unlock them.
Yeah god goku and vegeta. Even tho its easy. Like u farm 500k cash or do 2 hard arcade like battles nearly flawless. Also u got android21 instantly. Without having to beat story mode first
5:10 Kinda. The game originally gave you a 1 up for the first 100 rings and none after.(and of course 1 up capsules)
But a patch released later gave you a 1 Up with every 100 rings.
The Bonus had value at launch, but useless soon after.
I felt like it's excessive, but then again Lost World is one of the hardest Sonic games I've played.

Some of them are still physical. I got a little Sobble plush for Pokemon Shield, and by preordering all the KH 1.5, 2.5, etc I got a little pin for each one. Oh, and most recently I got an artbook for Xenoblade Chronicles Definitive Edition.

The GOG.com version of The Saboteur actually is the full uncensored version. The DLC on the consoles was just an unlock key that would let you access the on-disk data.
25 lives for a modern Sonic game? Really? Knuckles Chaotix launched in 1995 and they did away with lives since they realized how pointless they were!
And most 3D Sonic games give you lives like candy anyway. Ironically the only one that REALLY NEEDED that was 06, and it was far stingier.
There were occasionally some pretty good preorder bonuses. I think the best one I ever got was for the first Mirror's Edge. They gave away a replica of that yellow and black bag from the game. It was actually pretty good quality. Shocked since it was EA that did it.

I was an assistant manager at Game Stop, and they literally trained us to sell as many pre orders and gift cards as we can, because the company has a huge bank account with millions (billions?) of dollars sitting in it that they get paid interest on.

The "Hello, you!" keeps getting slower and it's making worried that Larry is caught in some sort of temporal anomaly.
For every “Hello, you!” that gets slower, a “Hey all, Scott here!” gets faster.
I honestly cannot remember the last time I bought a AAA game, let alone, pre-order one.
But when pre-orders for, say, an indie title come with the soundtrack (or, something else that's cool), I'd put the money down for that.
Last time I pre-ordered a game was Dead or Alive 5 Last Round for PC. Was cheap enough and got quite some of the DLCs together so not disappointed on that either, but the 6th game's price was so ridiculous I just passed on it and went full Jack Sparrow, if you know what I mean (plus the whole dress-up heaven/hell - depending on how you look at it - can drain any wallet dry).
Other than that just visual novels that I love, those also coming with the OSTs is pretty nice, given they usually have this as quite a strong point of the entire software.
I'm unsure if it was a pre-order bonus, or just getting it with the game (I got it used), but I remember getting Cave Story+ for Switch along with the manual (which is pretty rare, if not never seen in other Switch games) and a soundtrack of a certain soundfont of the game. The manual also had some little goodies in it, whether it be nice art, some comedy in it, or a *puzzle giving you the best ending.* Seriously, the last few pages either gave you a cryptic puzzle for either getting weapons that were originally pretty hard to get, how to get all postgame challenges, or even the best ending! For $18, it was very worth it.
I recall the pre-order offer for _SoulCalibur IV_ was school uniforms… and the manual had a coupon for Church's Chicken.

The attitude of software companies has always pissed me off about 2nd hand purchases, in which many do all they can to make it next to impossible to sell something you no longer want. Imagine, having this attitude with other products, where you cannot sell a couch, shirt, or action figure etc if you no longer want it. But yet, this attitude still persists with the software/games and it pisses me off and at times get away with it, when no other industry that I can think of, is like that.

There are good pre-order offers and there are bad ones. There are times when you absolutely should pre-order something to guarantee you'll get it, and there are times it's not necessary. But everyone, and I mean EVERYONE always forgets that pre-orders can be cancelled and a refund given. And that things like day one patches would still be a thing regardless of total pre-order revenue or not. I've pre-ordered every game I planned on getting for over a decade, and I don't plan on stopping. In a world where a significant chunk of the internet wants you to hate pre-ordering as much as disk-locked content and microtransactions, both of which are *actually* unjustifiable, I just don't.

It's double embarrassing that Generations was the game *right before Lost World* so what the hell is he talking about? 3D Sonic was in a VERY good place evolving from Unleashed to Colors to Gens...and then Sonic Team being Sonic Team killed a good thing for absolutely no reason and when they brought it back for Forces, they made it into a boring zombie of its former self.

Does anyone remember when the GBA was announced and EB Games had preorders that they would get the GBA system months earlier before the June 2001 launch date? I remember they already had the GBA demo in their store! But a lot of people who preordered it, didn’t get their GBA before the launch date, it was only selected people that got their hands on the GBA system, they mislead people into get the early release of the GBA!

The My Hero One's Justice game gave you a $5 DLC character for free if you pre-ordered it, which was nice. The sequel's pre-order also gave you a DLC character for free... except everybody else also got it for free several months later.
Not as bad as the stuff on this list, for sure, but does make me unlikely to pre-order a third game if they make one.

I don't know, I'd rather they give something away that just aesthetically unique than to give out something that made the game too easy or gave people who pre-order the game a huge advantage over people who didn't.
I guess it's all about personal preference. But there are a few different variables to take in consideration.
I think the only time I ever appreciated those was when I played Borderlands 2 with my loot ninja cousin and he took all the guns dropped at the beginning of the game without sharing. They were crap, but at least I had something for when the starter gun ran out of ammo!

However if you were to look at the other comment posted right after those are more like the weapons I was thinking of. Super low level and utterly useless in any situation besides pretty much what they described. Sure they're gold but they will forever be level one. Very unfortunate.

Woah now! I also received a trucker hat when I pre-ordered Duke Nukem Forever. It was wonderful, the quality was that of a burlap sack, or that sofa everyone's grandparents owned in the 90s. And the logo print, ON POINT! Looked like it was freshly printed using a GB pocket printer.

Well, there's way more bad 3D Sonic than good, but Lost World came after Colors and Generations. You'd be hard pressed to find anyone who thinks both Colors and Generations are shit. I've heard of people who dislike one of those two, but never anyone who dislikes both.

It was the demo of Duke Nukem Forever that made me go back to GameStop and cancel my pre-order. When the most entertaining part of the demo was throwing the turd around the bathroom, I finally realized that AAA games had really gone to crap.
