Canadian here and I have to admit Bear Hugger made me laugh - they nailed almost every Canadian stereotype with it. He could have been perfect if he said "sorry" every time he landed a punch.
Here’s a question - do you think he fits Saskatoon or Salmon Arm better? The arcade version doesn’t specify where Bear Hugger is from, whereas the SNES manual says he is from Saskatoon, and the Wii version later says Salmon Arm.
While I can't vouch for every heritage, I can honestly say that everyone I know who likes Punch-Out also loves the character from their country. I take great pride having Pizza Pasta be a representative of my heritage and have mad respect for my friend who will rant for an hour when you bring up Vodka's name change.

It's weird how national stereotyping (which used to be considered an innocent bit of poking fun) has become crossed with racial stereotyping (which has never really been OK). My totally non-controversial take is that if your country is so monoracial that a national stereotype equals a racial stereotype then that's on you.
Hell, I watch an Italian streamer who constantly jokes that his last name is "Pizzapasta", I don't think most people were really that offended by Punchout since it was more just meant to be silly than offensive.

I feel like, as Gaijin Goomba's video points out, Punchout (at least now) does, to be fair, approach the stereotypes in more of a lovingly teasing sorta way and, given things like the restaurant you mentioned, I generally get the impression a lot of people from these countries have quite an affection for their corresponding characters. It certainly helps they made fun of themselves with Honda, too. Some of these names I wonder if the companies were more worried than they needed to be and people wouldn't have cared. Like a classic Speedy Gonzalez type deal.
I'd say you're on the money considering I've literally only heard ever people talk about how Punchout's characters are problematic, but never seen anybody actually upset by any of the characters in the game. I can vouch for myself as a Canadian when I say I absolutely love what they did with Bear Hugger in the Wii game.

That, and in the '80's and '90's people seemed less likely to lose their sh!t over national stereotypes and often embraced them. The thought that someone would equate "Packy" to the ethnic slur "P*ki" back then seems unlikely. Whingemongers from that time period were more concerned about "violent" video games corrupting the youths, leading to such scenarios as "Contra" becoming "Probotector" and all references to 'ninjas' being removed.
I actually played the game, and I preferred to play as Spaz -- the two characters had different movement abilities. Both could do a "buttstomp" by pressing the down key in midair, which would cause them to drop straight down, destroying any blocks marked with an exclamation point (and damaging any enemies) that they hit. However, jumping while crouching would cause Jazz to do a Super Jump, going 60% higher and dealing damage along the way, whereas it would cause Spaz to do a Side Kick, dealing damage in the direction he was facing; and Spaz could double-jump, while hitting the jump button repeatedly as Jazz allowed him to glide across gaps by spinning his ears like helicopter blades. So each character had some areas and collectible items that only they could access -- either because they had to use one of their moves to reach a certain ledge, or because there were exclamation-mark blocks that only their crouch-jump move could break.
I've heard that argument about Piston Honda/Hondo being changed for fear of repercussions from the auto manufacturer, but I don't buy it. "Honda" is a very common surname in Japan, so I think it would a long reach, legally, to say Nintendo was trying to profit off the success of the auto manufacturer, as opposed to just using a very common name (besides, Capcom used it just fine with E. Honda). It's the same as saying there shouldn't be any video game characters named "Ford". It's such a weak argument to say they're related at all.
except Piston Honda has a few car references. From his name having the word Piston in it, to a lot of Doc's lines about him. It is obvious that it's poking fun at the car manufacturing in Japan.
Honestly, I wonder if it's actually moreso to keep Capcom off their backs, since having a fighter from Japan named Honda might lead to brand confusion, and Punch-Out! being the lesser of the two sales wise.
On the other hand, the Honda Keiretsu (though not traditionally structured like the descendants of the pre-WWII zaibatsus, which were business and mafia in one, it still counts as a vertical keiretsu), of which the auto manufacturing business was just one part and all the financial connections with the Mitsubishi Group (one of said traditionally-structured keiretsus descended from a zaibatsu) support them? I can totally see them getting pressured by them. After all, Piston Honda is a definitely more literal piss-take, since it's referencing the pistons of the engines that Honda manufactured, as well as the fact that he's one of two characters that have a one-hit-KO counterpunch built into their moveset. E. Honda (Edmond Honda, [エドモンド] is 'Edmondo' [本田] is 'Honda') , on the other hand, is a well-rounded fighter, and Sumo is a historically relevant, national sport that is celebrated in his existence rather than mocked. There's no footing for them to be angry about it, be it in the name, or in the design.
I agree that there's no reason to think that it was originally a reference to the car manufacturer. However, it seems odd that they would change the reference in the Wii version unless they were concerned. Especially since the game specifically makes car references when talking about Hondo.

Bear Hugger is totally inoffensive. I actually find it very funny, it's like a well researched, fake stereotype. This character gets mad bonus points from me tho, his hometown is only a 20 minute drive from where I live. Pretty cool imo
The title of the underappreciated fighting game _Pokkén Tournament_ is accidentally offensive in Germany, where the word "pocken" translates as "smallpox". As such, it was changed into _Pokémon Tekken_ on the box and cartridge art, being much more blatant about what the gameplay is based on.
That's very interesting. I have to admit, when you mentioned Pokken in the context of this video, my mind immediately went to how the game kept the Japanese voice overs for the Pokemon, and as such you have Braixen spouting what sounds like an F-bomb at Garchomp in the opening cinematic, complemented by the context for the scene actually being appropriate for doing so.
I feel bad for the people who got offended. But personally as someone with Cerebral Palsy, I try to have a sense of humor about my situation as best as I can, and I just couldn’t stop laughing at the idea of suddenly being called a sUpEr SpAsTiC by a video game. Now that you mention it, I have noticed people with your medical condition tend yo try and take it easy with humor. There's a comedian in my country with cerebral palsy who actually uses it for his jokes and actually joked about how people shouldn't mistake his situation for polio because "Polio is a poor people's disease!" One of the best dark humor comedians I have seen in my country tbh.
I always think it comes down to "were they intending to be nasty" with these sort of things. This was obviously just totally not understanding the implications of a word across the pond, which frankly does just make it very funny. Kind of reminds me of how Americans use the word "fanny" to mean the bum rather than vagina, or how me and my sister found much hilarity from watching the film The Last Airbender and realising Americans don't use the word "bender" the same way we do 🤣🤣

"Pizza Pasta" was the name of a brick oven pizza place that was around here during those days. Had I run across the character in Punch-Out, a very young me would have just thought he likes the restaurant so much he changed his name.
The characters in the Punchout series make light of all the ridiculousness of the cartoonish scenarios presented were both amusing and preposterous at the same time... Meanwhile, they don't actually denigrate anyone of any race, precisely because they are all represented as capable fighters that are a match for you if you don't learn how to best them, which is the entire point of the game to learn the patterns and repeat them. The only people that are up in arms about it being supposedly racist, are the actual racists in question who spend all their lives race-baiting and grifting the public because of it.

There was an enemy skill in FFVii named 'Spaz Voice' which - if I remember right - prevented enemies from being able to use magic. My mate was coaching me through a battle and told me to use it just as my Mum walked by my room and she took great offense. We had to play PlayStation at his house for a while after that.
I remember downloading a Finnish game about drinking on my phone. It was a simple "open the door with the correct answer and make your way to the end" type of game. There were two similar games with the topics of smoking and drugs too. I guess they were educational enough.

One I found recently was in the Super Famicom game "Lady Stalker" (same company that made Landstalker). One of the characters is called "Cocks". Going by the artwork, I think they were going for "Cooks", and messed up the romanisation.

Another example is the character form *Final Fight, Guy.* Initially *Capcom* wrote his name as *Gay,* but just because in Japan you say the words as you write it, so in Kanji *Guy* is actually *Ga-i.* Good thing someone addressed the issue soon enough, or they would had to add his name to the long list of Capcom character's names to change oversea.
In the 50's 60's it would have no matter. But in the 80's 90's it did. The same applied to the gay ghost being renamed gray ghost (also the "Beware the shadow of the gay ghost" would have awful implications)

I had no idea spaz was such an offensive word across the pond. Then again, I also felt the same way about the words shag and fanny. I told a coworker from the UK she had a nice fanny pack on once. Anger, followed by hilarity ensued. Whereas in the states if you said somebody had a bum bag that would be slightly offensive as the inclination would be that you were saying the person looked homeless and thus unkept.
While a bit outside the video's scope, one notable consequence of the Mario Party 8 incident was that it led to Nintendo of Europe taking translation and localization more seriously for the English releases; as opposed to just taking the North American English version for granted. There was a time where some games got completely different translations for their EUR English releases compared to the NA English version, and while that doesn't happen anymore we still see NoE edit NoA's work from time to time; usually when NoA get a little too inventive with their localizations.

Punch Out's stereotypes aren't offensive unless you're looking for offence, because it stereotypes everything. It's a parody of nationalities, it's not 'offending' them - hell, they parodied THEMSELVES with Piston Honda.
I think national stereotypes are fine if not done maliciously, but that "it's okay they shit on everyone because they also shit on themselves" is such a dumb defense. When you go to work next throw insults at your coworkers and bosses, you'll be totally okay though if you also insult yourself.

The product idea was to make fun of product names,like Burger thing, Aqua flush, T.V. ghoul, Ditz crackers, etc. Anyway, our local card store put an add in the window that said, 'We have Wacky Packies!'. I don't think pachyderm is at all obsolete. It's harldy used for all pachyderms like rhinos or hippos anymore, and pretty much only used for elephants, but when I grew up, it was in Dumbo, Babar, Horton Hears a Who, Sesame Street, and pretty much everything I remember having elephants. I don't remember the exact cartoon, but I can also clearly picture Bugs Bunny with his 100 years ago Brooklyn accent saying pack-ee-doim in one of the ones with Elmer and Daffy (and an elephant for some reason).

As someone from the US, I honestly had no idea that was an offensive term in the UK until this video. It's not really seen as offensive here, just describes someone or something basically randomly moving about quickly with no real rhythm or reason.

Packie McReary is quite literally the love of my life, like, greatest most profound video game character to ever exist but when i first started playing it was reaaaaally weird. i started feeling better about finding out how normal of a nickname it was.
Fokker being a plane reminded me of a story my dad told me about an Irishman who was on TV later in life talking about his days as a WW2 fighter pilot, talking about shooting a bunch of German Fokkers down, and the show host had to assure the audience Fokkers were a type of plane. To which the Irish fighter pilot replied, "Yeah but them fokkers were flying Messerschmitts"

I actually played the game, and I preferred to play as Spaz -- the two characters had different movement abilities. Both could do a "buttstomp" by pressing the down key in midair, which would cause them to drop straight down, destroying any blocks marked with an exclamation point (and damaging any enemies) that they hit. However, jumping while crouching would cause Jazz to do a Super Jump, going 60% higher and dealing damage along the way, whereas it would cause Spaz to do a Side Kick, dealing damage in the direction he was facing; and Spaz could double-jump, while hitting the jump button repeatedly as Jazz allowed him to glide across gaps by spinning his ears like helicopter blades. So each character had some areas and collectible items that only they could access -- either because they had to use one of their moves to reach a certain ledge, or because there were exclamation-mark blocks that only their crouch-jump move could break.

I've heard that argument about Piston Honda/Hondo being changed for fear of repercussions from the auto manufacturer, but I don't buy it. "Honda" is a very common surname in Japan, so I think it would a long reach, legally, to say Nintendo was trying to profit off the success of the auto manufacturer, as opposed to just using a very common name (besides, Capcom used it just fine with E. Honda). It's the same as saying there shouldn't be any video game characters named "Ford". It's such a weak argument to say they're related at all.
except Piston Honda has a few car references. From his name having the word Piston in it, to a lot of Doc's lines about him. It is obvious that it's poking fun at the car manufacturing in Japan.
Honestly, I wonder if it's actually moreso to keep Capcom off their backs, since having a fighter from Japan named Honda might lead to brand confusion, and Punch-Out! being the lesser of the two sales wise.
On the other hand, the Honda Keiretsu (though not traditionally structured like the descendants of the pre-WWII zaibatsus, which were business and mafia in one, it still counts as a vertical keiretsu), of which the auto manufacturing business was just one part and all the financial connections with the Mitsubishi Group (one of said traditionally-structured keiretsus descended from a zaibatsu) support them? I can totally see them getting pressured by them. After all, Piston Honda is a definitely more literal piss-take, since it's referencing the pistons of the engines that Honda manufactured, as well as the fact that he's one of two characters that have a one-hit-KO counterpunch built into their moveset. E. Honda (Edmond Honda, [エドモンド] is 'Edmondo' [本田] is 'Honda') , on the other hand, is a well-rounded fighter, and Sumo is a historically relevant, national sport that is celebrated in his existence rather than mocked. There's no footing for them to be angry about it, be it in the name, or in the design.
I agree that there's no reason to think that it was originally a reference to the car manufacturer. However, it seems odd that they would change the reference in the Wii version unless they were concerned.
Especially since the game specifically makes car references when talking about Hondo.

The characters in the Punchout series make light of all the ridiculousness of the cartoonish scenarios presented were both amusing and preposterous at the same time... Meanwhile, they don't actually denigrate anyone of any race, precisely because they are all represented as capable fighters that are a match for you if you don't learn how to best them, which is the entire point of the game to learn the patterns and repeat them.
The only people that are up in arms about it being supposedly racist, are the actual racists in question who spend all their lives race-baiting and grifting the public because of it.

While a bit outside the video's scope, one notable consequence of the Mario Party 8 incident was that it led to Nintendo of Europe taking translation and localization more seriously for the English releases; as opposed to just taking the North American English version for granted.
There was a time where some games got completely different translations for their EUR English releases compared to the NA English version, and while that doesn't happen anymore we still see NoE edit NoA's work from time to time; usually when NoA get a little too inventive with their localizations.

I don't think pachyderm is at all obsolete. It's harldy used for all pachyderms like rhinos or hippos anymore, and pretty much only used for elephants, but when I grew up, it was in Dumbo, Babar, Horton Hears a Who, Sesame Street, and pretty much everything I remember having elephants. I don't remember the exact cartoon, but I can also clearly picture Bugs Bunny with his 100 years ago Brooklyn accent saying pack-ee-doim in one of the ones with Elmer and Daffy (and an elephant for some reason).
I knew the one about *Fokker* and the rumors were that they changed it for... "german reasons", but we all knew the real reason.

As someone from the US, I honestly had no idea that was an offensive term in the UK until this video. It's not really seen as offensive here, just describes someone or something basically randomly moving about quickly with no real rhythm or reason.

Am I the only one that immediately opens a Larry Bundy video the moment I see it on my subs page? It doesn't matter what I'm doing or what else I might be watching, that video gets top priority.
Gotta say, I have never heard of a person called Patrick being called "Packie" in Ireland. It sounds like something that might have been in the past, but has since stopped being used, and someone who is a few generations removed in the states might think is still relevant because their great grandpa was known as Packie or something.
We too see it as a derogatory term for people from Pakistan, just like the English do.

Packie McReary is quite literally the love of my life, like, greatest most profound video game character to ever exist but when i first started playing it was reaaaaally weird. i started feeling better about finding out how normal of a nickname it was.

Fokker being a plane reminded me of a story my dad told me about an Irishman who was on TV later in life talking about his days as a WW2 fighter pilot, talking about shooting a bunch of German Fokkers down, and the show host had to assure the audience Fokkers were a type of plane. Red Ocean looks like the kind of game Civvie would cover. I dunno, it's just giving me that vibe. Also, I had no idea it was published by the same people who published Mystery of the Droods. Which has a puzzle that involves poisoning the homeless. (and isn't even the wildest puzzle in that game)
