161) Rainy Mew Lake Camp & Hike (Algonquin Park)

- On Saturday, April 22nd, 2023, amid rain and gloomy skies, I made the drive from Toronto to Algonquin Park for some tranquil Nature therapy. I brought the ice fishing hut, my Woods cot, cook meals, and my Little Buddy heater. Although I endured some fails, they had no effect on my superb enjoyment of the moment. The next day, Sunday the 23rd, I hiked the 3.5km Hemlock Bluff trail and then the 7.7km Track and Tower trail. Loons serenaded and a moose paraded! Suuuuuuuuuuuuch a wonderful time I had. 🥰
Note: Canadian Tire gave me a full refund on the cot!

Keep your leaky tent and put a tarp over it as a rain fly. Sure hate to have all that room and not be able to use it. Any extra tarp length could used as a canopy to cover a cooking fire.
I think I’ll just keep it and use it for it’s intended purpose rather than try to make it rain-friendly. Also, with no floor, it’s not the best option for rain anyway. Thanks for watching and commenting, my friend! 🥰🙏🏼✌🏼

I have a similar hut. They do not do well in the rain. They are made for sub zero temps.

@@Womaninthewoods13 Kudos for your resiliency and making good after a bad situation. I originally thought that i would use the fishing hut more in the winter, but it is soooo big. I ended up purchasing a 4 season mountaineering tent instead . . . The hut is impossible to transport in the back country. Still have the fishing hut in the storage room though. Maybe one day i will use it for its true intention.
@@jaytabac6525 It is definitely glamping gear when used as a tent, not at all lightweight or compact. For me, the purchase was an experiment/the novelty. It’s fun, but the conditions need to be perfect. 🤷🏻♀️

I’m still elated about that moose! What a treat. Yes, this trail has it all: the rapids, the lookout, and long enough that it isn’t as crowded as some of the shorter day trails. Have you done any of the trails at Algonquin, Karen?

You realize you need to water proof most tents when you buy them, and re-apply water proofing every so often.
Set the tent up when it's dry and apply the water proofing stuff the all of the seems, even silicone spray works, inside and out side seems. Do it quick and get out to let it set.
Heater buddy... no, the propane does not expire, at least not in our lifetime. I'm sure you just need to trouble shoot the heater. 😊
It all depends on whether you have used it before, they can be tricky out of the box

It’s pretty limited in what it’s useful for. I’ll try spraying it with silicone, maybe.
