The vintage car. The Moneypenny reveal. The idea that Bond isn't M's first favourite. Bond being from Scotland. All of it played into the history of the James Bond films and the mystique surrounding it.
This film is great, but seeing it after watching the earlier Bonds makes it so much better.
Dame Judy Dench was the Best M in the franchise. She appeared cold towards James but you can tell she really cares for him. Especially at the end.
She's soooooo gooood ❤️❤️❤️❤️
Yeah, Connery and Llewelyn will always be my favorite Bond and Q but Judy Dench is the best M by far.

If you feel bad for the food stands now, you'll be mortified to know that Bond movies rarely use CGI so they trashed 12 separate Jags and Land Rovers for that one crash scene at the beginning of the film. They had side-by -side pics of them in a row in the bonus scenes and the crew were wracking the bodywork of the jag with hammers to give them a more 'authentic crash' look
I think you meant the Audi as the car is the four-ringed logo; they wrecked 15 Audi A5s for that scene alone, which was painful as any one of us wouldn't mind a car like that
"Bond movies rarely use CGI" is rubbish, even if the particular scenes you talk about had practical elements. Hell, No Time To Die had 1486 VFX shots.
Also James and Moneypenny have always had a “will they won’t they” relationship. They haven’t slept together yet haha
That's part of the fun. After all, she's "Britain's last line of defense".
There is SO MUCH to love about Skyfall. The opening title sequence, Adele, the acting, the writing, Sam Mendes’ directing style, the absolutely GORGEOUS photography and cinematography from the GOAT Roger Deakins, the amount of subtle callbacks and Easter eggs to previous films, not to mention the fact that this film really does an even better job of humanizing Bond as a character than even Casino Royale did. And let’s not forget that even with over 50 apparent Easter eggs in the film that reference older ones, Skyfall simultaneously also embraces and exposes the potential of the future of the character all at the same time. Masterful film. More so than just a damn good Bond film, Skyfall is a terrific film overall.
Ms Moneypenny is a corner stone figure in all Bond movies, except for the Daniel Craig ones, until this movie, where she's introduced. She's the secretary of M, in all Bond movies, always has a flirt with Bond of some sort, but they never hook up or are together in one way or the other.
While her role is always small, she's in every Bond movie, except for the first Craig movies.
I'd like to say that I'm far from pleased with the new Moneypenny.
In my opinion a proper Moneypenny should be charming but rather a homely plain Jane, funny but mousy and not look like a potential Bond girl.
I always laugh when Silva does his sassy grenade throw through the window. There’s almost a Jack Sparrow-esque mannerism in his character.
If you think M dying here is hard for those who just have seen Craig's films.. She had been playing M for nearly 20 years straight, even before Craig. I suggest her first film as M, Goldeneye. It's a straight Bond classic and considered one of the best.
That's not just a spy car, it's THE spy car. That's the same car that was used in one of the most famous Bond movies Goldfinger
The shot of Daniel Craig entering the casino on the small boat surrounded by those floating lanterns is still, twelve years on, one of the most beautiful scenes I've ever seen in movie history.
Since you ask, I'll point out something that you probably missed. I'm a big fan of the painter J.M.W. Turner, I even have a copy of one of his paintings in my home, so I immediately recognized the painting they are sitting in front of at 10:57. Turner like to give his paintings long and descriptive names and that one is called "The Fighting Temeraire, tugged to her last Berth to be broken up, 1838". The Temeraire, like many ships of that era, was a beautiful, tall and majestic ship of sail which had fought in the Battle of Trafalgar against Napoleon. The painting shows the moment it was decommissioned. The Temeraire is a beautiful old warrior, but too out of date for the modern wars, and so, having been stripped of its lovely white sails it is being tugged out to it's grave by an ugly, coal burning boat which is spewing black soot into the air. The symbolism matches the theme of the film perfectly. Bond, of course, refuses to be treated in the same fashion as the Temeraire, and in the end proves that he is still capable of engaging in the fight. And the film agrees! One of the last scenes is in 'new' M's office, and what does he have on his wall? At 37:07 we see "HMS Victory Heavily Engaged at the Battle of Trafalger" (by Thomas Buttersworth). Behind HMS Victory is the Temeraire at the height of it's power, both ships are under full sail and fighting at the apex of their power.
This is why "Art Appreciation" is so important. For those in the know, the entire story of the film is summed up with the selection of two pieces. Thank you for the insight.
It's definitely my favorite of the Craig movies and I'd put it a close second behind "Goldeneye".
Thus movie released right after Taken 2. Both films have extensive action scenes atop the grand bazaar rooftops of Istanbul. So watching this in theaters back to back had a lot of people laughing

A few little trivia bits.
1. While the establishing shots are in Shanghai, the actual building Patrice infiltrates was in London, Radio Design done the Jellyfish graphics for that scene
2. The Island that bond goes too is a real island! Its called Hashima Island
3. The scene where Javier Bardem slides down the escalator and smiles was an accident/outtake (he wasn't meant to smile) but they kept it in
4. If you ever want to visit "Skyfall", it was filmed in a real life place in Scotland called Glencoe
2:15 That gun has a double drum barrel magazine. Each drum has rounds in a coil, and they zipper together where they come together, with each side being pushed by a spring, giving the weapon a very large magazine. Which also gives a semi-real reason for the whole "neverending magazine" action movies like.
Love this film. Roger Deakins' cinematography never misses. The best looking Bond film for sure.
The Syfall estate was a full size prop. It was built on a stretch of heathland about 30 miles from London - so,in actuality, nowhere near Scotland!
A film about confronting old mistakes and traumas and making peace with them...by blowing them up. In other words, the perfect way to celebrate 50 years of James Bond.
I'm firmly with you on this Vee, as someone who's seen all the Bond films, this one is my absolute favourite, a pitch-perfect marriage of the gritty new style of action and old-school silliness. I love how mature this script is, the dialogue-heavy scenes (like Silva's introduction or M reciting Tennyson at the inquiry) are so captivating, and the exploration of Bond and M's pseudo-maternal relationship, and Bond's overall place in the world of modern espionage, were both phenomenally well-done. The performances are top notch across the board, Daniel Craig is excellent as always, Judi Dench gives her best turn as M, and Javier Bardem is an outstanding villain. It's also the best-looking film in the series, thanks to the magnificent work of Roger Deakins (Blade Runner 2049, 1917), the action scenes are every bit as beautiful as they are exhilarating and explosive, and Thomas Newman's unique yet Bondian score is just the cherry on top. It might be partly driven by nostalgia, since it was the first Bond film I saw in cinemas, but I think this is the absolute peak of the series and one of the best action films ever made

16:41 Dune fans will recognize one of the henchmen behind Bond as Roger Yuan, he played Leiutentant Lanville in Dune 1 and 2 and he was one of the main fight coordinators on Dune as well.
And also recognize Javier Bardem, the villain of this movie and Stilgar in Dune.
It's incredible to me that Moneypenny [Naomie Harris] is Tia Dalma in Pirates of the Caribbean!

Here's why Skyfall is not only the very best Daniel Craig-era Bond film, but the best of ALL 007 ever:
Because this film shows not only Bond's backstory, but how that (and then every trauma he's suffered throughout his 007 career, both physical and mental) has affected him as a man.
FINALLY this is James Bond if he were an actual human being, as entirely UN-invincible to live's traumals and life-altering hardships as the rest of us.
In this film, he is not always suave, he is not perfect either as an indestructible MI6 agent or as a man, he is not always capable of letting everything roll off his back (such as getting shot and left not only bleeding but feeling betrayed for his trouble) without residual scorn in his heart, he is not always inhumanly graceful at everything, and so on and so on.
THIS IS A HUMAN BEING like the rest of us, and finally there's a Bond film whose stark realism shows that fact in all its uncomfortable but unignorable glory.
I only like movies and stories where this facet of reality is openly acknowledged. I and many others like me prefer this Bond film above all others throughout the multi-decade genre, for the same reason you'll see us preferring the very first Rambo movie ever made back in the early 1980's;
First Blood for example, was not a cheesy war movie full of action for the sake of action. It was one of the first movies ever made that finally confronted head on the issue of traumatized war vets coming back home only to feel alone, unwelcomed, disrepsected, and betrayed. And all that, on top of the permanent PTSD they brought home with them after the war itself.
And so in this particular Bond film, here we have a 007 who lost the first love of his life, has been betarayed and left to feel thrown to the wolves, and that's ontop of the countless betrayals he's experienced at the hands of various contacts in the field throughout his career. And in the middle of this movie he finds out that M sent him back on the job with a huge fail, into an ultra high-risk scenario he wasn't ready for-- and, WITHOUT TELLING HIM ABOUT IT, mind you.
So yeah the man has understandably turned cold, judgmental, hard-nosed, in some cases unforgiving, distrusting, and so on. He's lost his former charm and suave, because he's been robbed of his love of life's simple pleasures and his ability to see the brighter side of life.
What do you suppose you'd end up being like as a person after all that? Just some food for thought.
THIS, is how the entire James Bond genre should've been from the Sean Connery days all the way to now.
Bu that's just how I see it.
All those words to say this film was incredible. A love letter to those of us who have been 007 fans from Dr. No all the way through.
_Skyfall_ is the Bond film of my generation, and I am proud to have it as such...
I was still in my adolescence when it released, and I had already become a Bond fan having seen many of the films before. Couple that with the 50th anniversary celebration of the franchise that was in a fever pitch at the time of release, and you could not escape the phenomenon of Bond, James Bond. When the Aston Martin DB5 (with modifications) from _Goldfinger_ appeared, I lost my mind in the theater. This was a satisfying watch for longtime fans and a fresh, exciting watch for newcomers.
It also holds a special memory, as it was the last film I saw with my grandmother before she passed. She loved watching this film, revisiting Bond seemingly for the first time since the 60s and the days of Sean Connery. Since her passing, this film means so much more to my family.
On top of all that, it's a bloody good film. Expert acting, cinematography (by the inimitable legend: Roger Deakins), music, and story make this a true modern classic I will never forget.

Some notes from a lifetime Bond fan:
2:15 - It's a Glock 18, a variant of the Austrian Glock pistol series capable of fully automatic fire, loaded with a Beta C magazine, holding 100 9mm rounds.
8:15 - He also got drunk on her scotch, note the redness in his eyes.
11:11 - Modern technology on a 93 year old gun design...
21:00 - 1962, right on the bottle. A single malt scotch specifically made for the film celebrating the 60th anniversary of James Bond in film.
28:20 - The Aston-Martin DB5, the same car Bond one won from Alex Dimitrios in Casino Royale, and the original James Bond car from Goldfinger, in 1964.
29:10 - Not directly stated, but Bond drove all through the night to Scotland, to- as the song states- stand tall at Skyfall.
29:43 - Nope, Andrew Bond's hunting lodge. The Bond family was quite well off until Andrew and Monique's deaths.
29:52 - The caretaker.
30:33 - An Anderson-Wheeler double barrelled rifle chambered in .500 Nitro Express. These literal elephant guns are made by hand in England and cost as much as a house.

I recommend Goldeneye. It is one of the best James Bond films.

Although he is English and has a background in the Royal Military, we have a similar mindset in the American Military. Even if we get shot, if we can still shoot back, or complete our mission, we do that. We dont stop until it is completed, the threat is neutralized, or we drop for good.
The master of cinematography, Roger Deakins, who shot most of Sam Mendes' and Denis Villeneuve's movies like Blade Runner 2049, Prisoners and 1917, shot Skyfall as well. Stunning work as always!
As someone who grew up watching the Roger Moore Bond movies, my favourite thing about this movie was finding out that Moneypenny used to be a field agent... and probably once actually hooked up with 007.
Skyfall was my favorite of the Craig era specifically. Nothing before or after it really ever lived up to the hype.
Highest-grossing Bond film of all time and released during the 50th Anniversary.
Bond remembering his tragic past, rebuilding his body & soul,
recharging his character to being the best in the game.
Judi Dench as the only female 'M' within 17 years and 2 eras.
Tied with the late Bernard Lee, who played the role first in the earliest films.
Saw this in IMAX and i was blown away.
Bardem as the villain, Introducing franchise favorites (Q & Moneypenny), getting a new M and the title theme by Adele is so good.
A definite bounce-back from the previous film.
Showing us once again why no does it better than 007.
Bond openings are always so trippy and cool
The movie was just the perfect blend of intriguing story, insane stunts, perfect casting and so many references to past Bond iterations. While you can fully enjoy the movie without understanding the references to things like the OG Bond car, exploding pens or namedrops like Moneypenny, it enhances the experience so much for longtime 007 enjoyers.
I recommend: goldeneye, tomorrow never dies, the world is not enough, die another day. The last 2 are severely underrated
The entire Brosnan era alone?
I love three of those four, but there is a plethora of other excellent films in this 60 year long series.

Ive watched every Bond movie ever made and love most of them but Skyfall is my favorite , I watched Skyfall in a large theater when it was released and it absolutely blew me away.
"Were you expecting an exploding pen?" Well seeing as I'm watching a Bond movie... yes.
Did you know that Daniel was in a Star Wars movie as a Stormtrooper? It was The Force Awakens.
Vkunia - this was the LAST film for JUDY D. as M for the bond series.
VKunia I don't know if you've seen the original Bond films. But the ending of this film is like the beginning of the old Bond series. So these films are pre-Bond or the transformation into Bond. The vintage car was in the original films, very nice call back. You will notice Bond gets better in the way deals with situations. In Casino Royale Bond he is almost a brute killer. In Skyfall he is getting a lot better in assessing situations and using the environment, becoming ruthlessly efficient.
This isn’t just a great Bond movie, this is a great movie full stop. Daniel Craig and Judi Dench going head to head with Javier Bardem is brilliant to watch. Add in the great supporting cast and you have a classic🔥
Your reactions are the most genuine ,fun,FUNNY, smart. Remember you mentioned your dad's accent while you watched Deadpool. You compared the silver giant's accent to your dad's, I was rolling on the ground for that. When I in a fighting mood, I just watched your reactions and laugh.
Skyfall remains my absolute favourite 007 film. It cemented Craig as my favourite 007 with a incredibly gripping gorgeous film that brought Bond into the modern era with real style whilst keeping everything that made the series great in the first place. Incredible film. great video👍

This is my favorite Bond movie (and movies in general) for a different reason. When this came out I had literally just put my dog down because of aggressive cancer. I was a complete wreck and saw that this was playing in the theaters so I decided to go see it -- not because I wanted to see it or loved Bond movies, but I just needed to focus my attention on something else for a little while. This movie managed to grab my attention and hold it for over 2 hours. It gave me the break I needed and for that I'm so grateful. I have seen this movie a ton of times, but it never gets old. The cinematography is fantastic, the villain is top notch, and it has a great story. I am so thankful that this movie exists.

You might not want to begin with the ones they're making 60 years on. Watch a few of the Sean Connery movies from the 1960s.
2:13 you've definitely seen that gun. You just havent seen a drum magazine that large designated for that gun. It was just a glock (i believe. It was hard to see on my phone screen) its probably the most common pistol seen in modern films. The magazine was probably a 100rd (rounds) magazine
I saw this movie in theaters, multiple times. The cinematography was top notch and for me, very few compare. Absolutely stunning shots.
This is definitely one of Craigs best movies, and one of the only ones that gives more insight into his origins and the ending nearly got me crying allong with Bond. Epic movie for sure!

EVERY TIME I watch this movie, I can't help but wonder why Bond didn't attack the guards on the island BEFORE he shot the girl!
You cannot convince me the role of Kincade- the hard as nails Scotsman who teaches Bond how to shoot- was not written with Sean Connery in mind.
I have never watched a James Bond movie. In my 62 years. I was born a month after the first movie was released. That's in the UK. Wasn't released in the US till early 1963
On the topic of M’s coldness, the song “You Know My Name,” from “Casino Royale,” which is written from M’s perspective, includes the line “the coldest blood runs through my veins.” So you were definitely onto something.
The whole song is basically about how dangerous Bond’s line of work is and how disposable he is to M.
Skygfall is one of the best Bond films ever made and my second favorite in the franchise (#1 being Goldeneye).
I’ve seen every Bond film growing up and this is the one of the best film to date ever.
Javier Bardem absolutely *crushed* this part - a massive step up from that nothing-burger from _Quantum of Solace._

As a matter of fact, until this film, no James Bond film had ever won an Oscar for Best Original Song. All subsequent releases since SKYFALL have now won it.
This film actually won 2 Oscars: Best Original Song and Best Sound Editing (the latter being a tie with ZERO DARK THIRTY)

Great reaction. In Ian Fleming's later books you get more info on his parents - they died in a climbing or skiing accident his Mum was Swiss French and his Dad was Scottish and was some big arms dealer type.

Skyfall is truly a masterpiece. Opening scene, Cinematography, Bgm, Action scenes, Plot, Villian and Ending, everything was perfect and awesome. My favorite Bond film.
Skyfall was my favorite Daniel Craig Bond film... in fact, I am pretty sure it was my favorite Bond film period. Javier Bardem's villain in this WAS great, but I still think his Anton Chigurh was even better. I've said for a while, that Anton Chigurh (from No Country for Old Men) was probably the creepiest bad guy I've ever seen in film.
Anyway, enjoyed the reaction and seeing the movie again.

This section lasts about 2-3 seconds in the full opening sequence, but in this video we only get to see it briefly before it transitions to the girls's silhouette

Javier Bardem's character Raoul Silva is the only bond villain that we can empathize with...obviously that doesn't excuse his crimes , but his thirst for revenge has a reason

Fun Fact: when they were working on the film, they originally considered hiring Sean Connery as the part of Kincaid. But they were concerned that he would overshadow Daniel Craig, so they decided against it.

Yeah, you can't do that anymore. Real world ones have little obstacles every few feet that would stop you dead or literally "rip you a new one!" I don't know when they officially started doing that but I remember a long escalator at my local mall did NOT have blockers in place around 1970 and you would see the occasional joy-slider!

Yeah... that's the tone of a woman who didn't think for a second that James Bond was actually dead, and probably got mad that he didn't check back in. I could see her being a little petty about that, but ultimately, I know she really, really cares for him. She's hurt that he let everybody think he was dead, and that it was her fault.
As a (stupid) American, though, I can certainly appreciate how they refer to M as _ma'am_ , because with the accent, it sounds like he could be saying _Mom_ each time, almost like it's an inside joke, because that's what he calls her every time after *Casino Royale*.
"How in the hell did you find out where I lived?"
"Hm? Same way I found out your real name. I thought M was a randomly assigned letter, I had no idea it stood for--"
"You utter one more syllable and I'll have you killed."
(Which is funny because it stands for "Missions".)
"And Bond? Don't ever break into my house again."
"Mom."
Not to mention that in *Quantum of Solace*, he tells Camille that he's after Greene because he tried to kill someone close to him. Camille says, "Was it your mother?" And Bond smirks and says, "She'd like to think so."
And now in *Skyfall*, we meet Silva who "used to be" M's favorite, like Bond is now. And he openly taunts her by calling her Mommy and Mother right to her face, in front of James Bond. Luckily, instead of thinking, "Oh, shit! This guy MIGHT have a point -- this lady lied her ass off - is she going to do to me what she did to him!?"
He's thinking, "This guy actually smokes crack. We gotta get Mom the fuck out of here...YESTERDAY."
Which is where he goes.
Silva is a GREAT character and Javier Bardem plays him very, very well... The reveal with the monologue about the rats, was GREAT. I do believe that if they revealed Janus in GoldenEye with the same scene as-written, Janus would've probably been a little more successful than Silva was. Imagine if James Bond was IN THE ROOM when this MI-6 00-Agent took the cyanide capsule, thought, "Oh, shit, he's dead, it's too late to save him, I'm gonna have to escape on foot!" And then show up at this abandoned island only to find... that same 00-Agent, saying that he didn't die, life clung to him like a disease, while his cheekbones melted SLOWLY...

If you love that there's guns and gadgets in the Aston Martin, that's nothing compared to the other cars in the other films, particularly the Pierce Brosnan era of films!
About the house exploding, it was actually a smaller scaled built replica of the actual house, which itself was built for the film alone; the one built to be blown up was one third scale.

YO.... WHAAAAAT. You made a VERY good point, and I never once considered it. I just assumed the "decrypting the stolen hard drive" was going through M's computer via a proxy, it never occurred to me that somebody might actually be doing the shit physically in the office. But then again... it's M'S OFFICE. I don't know how the ranks work for the British secret service, but... isn't she like... the Director of the entire branch? There's no way someone managed to get into that office completely uninterrupted...

These are kind of prequels, your reaction to the car shows that you haven’t seen any previous ones. Start watching them from the beginning and doctor know and you’ll get lots of followers and appreciation and love the time spent.
To me also javier bardem showed a topnotch villain - no shouting, no screaming. Just a calm, surgical mind and in his emotions - yes you can recognize his crazyness. But it lies right underneath his superficial behavior.
If you're into that kind of villain I highly recommend the second sherlock movie with Robert Downey jr. -> "A game of shadows".
Only Spectre and No Time To Die to finish Daniel Craig's arc as James Bond. The James Bond of Daniel Craig is the only one to have an interconnected storyline that runs through the five 007 movies he entered. All the other James Bond actors had isolated stories in each movie they entered.
I've been telling everyone for years - this is the best James Bond movie! Saying a lot as I'm a huge Sean Connery fan.
My one gripe with this movie was all this time I figured the varying actors were separate spies who used the name JB. But Kincade calling him by the name despite not knowing he was a spy put the coffin nails in that theory
That theory never held any water. Especially not if you paid attention to the very deliberate moments of continuity throughout the series. Perhaps the most prominent case against the so called "Codename Theory" is the woman known as Contessa Teresa "Tracy" di Vicenzo.
