And the worst song is Madonna's for Die Another Day, I don't know how the production allowed that song that has nothing to do with the Bond essence, it's a typical Madonna danceable techno song.

the movie has things that doesnt know how to handle.
-A stronger Bond Girl: Wai Lin is a superior bondgirl that takes all the action scenes. She is even better than Bond. Sadly they had to push her back, several times, to not outshine bond. Lin, is not a sexy bond Girl, and kinda doesnt have any sexual charisma to create the fantasy!
-Sacrificial Bond Girl: Paris had no chemistry with Bond. Specially when its suppose to have some sexual tension between them. Terry is not sexy, or elegant! She is beautiful! But the role required a elegant, sexy trophy wife! We see Pierce struggling to have chemistry with Terry.
-Goffy Villain: Elliot motivations to world dominations comes in a cleaver way, different from the previous villains. But the issue is that Elliot is too much... that goes against the atmosphere of the movie. Elliot´s goes so off, unlike Zorin in A View to a Kill. Max Zorin does blend in the movie (somehow Walken did it) but Elliot doesnt seem to belong in this movie!
-Not impressive Henchman: Stamper is not a memorable henchman, dispite his image. His a big guy, muscle and could be such interesting side villain, yet, his just there.

I mainly work with recording artists/bands but quite often I also create effects and more ambient/atmospheric sounds. I know you said you prefer the music in Tomorrow Never Dies to GoldenEye, but GoldenEye's music is actually real cool in the sense that it uses a lot of very "real world" sounds instead of more traditional instruments, like metal clanging. The N64 game actually took this further and really leaned into that style. Anyway I better stop before this comment gets too long 😅 Feel free to quiz me about anything music/sound related any time though! I'm always happy to talk about it! The bad guy in this aged really well. I don't think he was very well received at the time but his evil plot is so much more relevant now (not so much the "murdering people to start world wars" part but definitely the idea of different media corporations pushing certain agendas for their own gain).

The biggest knock on the movie was that Carver seemed like a wimp. Previous Bond villains chose to have henchmen do the dirty work, but you felt they could have handled themselves in a fight, (in some cases when they were younger), if they had to. But Carver had to have Stomper do the fighting for him, because Carver didn't seem like he could fight his way out of a paper bag.

Michelle and Brosnan had great chemistry, and Paris brought out another side to Bond. This movie is incredibly rewatchable cause once you`re over being distracted by the action/explosions, you discover the details in the peformances and lines. I love every frame of the hotel suite scene and how their body language is in complete contradiction to their standoff-ish dialogue. so glad u enjoyed it! cant wait for the next one

    Hey Jen!
    - The music for this one was by David Arnold, who composed the scores for 'Stargate' and 'Independence Day'. He will be in charge of the scores for a few more of the Bond films with Brosnan. My favorite piece is the one playing during the parking garage scene. The k.d. lang song "Surrender" is absolutely perfect...it was around the time she was really big in the 1990s. I am not a Sheryl Crow fan, and really wish lang's song had been the one in the opening credits. Because Arnold wrote the score, and not the Crow song, he laced 'Surrender' into the score several times...sort of as a jab at not writing the song for the opening credits. Originally, John Barry was asked, but he was told he had to deal with the Sheryl Crow song, and not write the main theme song...so, he refused and suggested Arnold.
    - The British Admiral played by Geoffrey Palmer, who did a charming (and very funny) sitcom playing the husband of Judi Dench (our wonderful M) called 'As Time Goes By'. Their chemistry is so good, that I find myself smiling watching the scenes they are in together in this film.
    - There are several connections to 'Downton Abbey' in this film...1) The Minister of Defense is played by Julian Fellowes, creator of the series and films. 2) Hugh Bonneville, who plays Robert Crawley, the Earl of Grantham on 'Downton Abbey' played "Air Warfare Officer-HMS Bedford'. 3) Brendan Coyle, who plays John Bates, Valet to Earl Grantham on 'Downton Abbey' plays 'Leading Seaman-HMS Bedford' 4) And the last connection is Miss Moneypenny herself, Samantha Bond plays Lady Rosamund Painswick, sister to Earl Grantham on 'Downton Abbey'.
    - A young Gerard Butler (300, The Phantom of the Opera, P.S. I Love You) plays 'Leading Seaman-HMS Devonshire' in the opening scenes sinking the British ship. He was later considered for 007 before it was given to Daniel Craig but turned it down for fears of typecasting. He even has several lines in the sequence.
    - This is one of my favorite performances by Jonathan Pryce. His portrayal of Elliott Carver is one of the best Bond villains ever IMHO. He has also played Bond creator Ian Fleming. I have never seen it, but I have heard about it. Amazingly, the original Elliott Carver was going to be Anthony Hopkins...but because the film had no set script when filming began, he quit after 3 days. He then went to do 'The Mask of Zorro' being directed by Martin Campbell, who turned down the 'Tomorrow Never Dies' gig because he didn't want to do another Bond film immediately after 'GoldenEye'.

31:46 Michelle Yeoh has in fact won several beauty pageants in her youth, including the Miss Malaysia title in 1983 at age 21. She is also trained in martial arts and has not only performed as an actress but also as a stuntwoman. In many movies she does her own stunts (not in this one though - she wanted to but the director prevented her from doing so because he thought it was too dangerous; she did perform all combat scenes though).

I was lucky enough to watch this in the theaters back in 1997. It's my second favorite Brosnan Bond after GoldenEye. It encapsulates everything about late 90s action movies: elaborate action set pieces with practical effects, and a relatively lighthearted plot with a wonderfully hammy villain. Speaking of the latter, it's interesting how much more relevant the villain has gotten in the last decade or so. The movie also captured the zeitgeist of mainstream American culture at the time. With the Soviet Union gone and the Gulf War over, there was a sense of stability and optimism of the future; the use of "modern" things like GPS, high res live video feeds, etc. showed off the advancements of technology as the century came to a close. Bond even gets to drive around a remote control car, making him seem like a kid having fun with a toy. China is still seen as aloof, but also a potential ally. And yet despite all of this, the movie reassures its older audiences that sometimes the "old fashioned ways" are still relevant with the use of the British battleship at the end.
Some other fun facts: When Bond and Wai Lin were escaping on the bike, them arguing over the controls wasn't an act; the director told them both separately that they'd be the ones driving. When Bond crashes the car in the rental place, onlookers rushed in because they thought it was a real accident. There were quite a few deleted scenes; my favorite was Gupta using throwing cards as weapons. This is a skill that actor Ricky Jay had in real life. If you look at the background of the Q scene, there's a live jaguar in a cage, which was supposed to be for another funny scene that got cut. The guy on the stealth boat who was supposed to be watching the cameras was originally killed for his lack of attention, but that was cut as well. There were also lots of issues with the production, such as it getting a release date with pre-production finished, constant rewrites up until the last minute, problems amongst the actors and director, etc. There's plenty more, but I'm sure others will post about it. Glad you enjoyed the movie!

Another solid entry. Pierce Brosnan continues to give it his all as Bond, Michelle Yeoh is hot asf, and the car chase is phenomenal too. Also, the music by David Arnold is some of the best during this period. He would continue making awesome Bond soundtracks from there for the next few films up until Quantum of Solace.

This was my first Bond film, well in a way.
Years back when it was common to upload whole films in multiple parts on TH-cam with no regard to copyright, I watched it and adore it for its non stop action.
Have to say, I still enjoy it as an action movie, not so much a Bond film. He’s very “Rambo in a tuxedo” here, especially during the finale on the stealth-boat, not very Bond but fun all the same.
What I do appreciate about the film is how ahead of its time it was with the choice of villain. Jonathan Pryce is a great actor, and he delivers his lines with sheer relish it’s hard not to be entertained by him. But at the time, many people found it silly and not very villainous to have just a media mogul as a villain.
However, what with one thing and another in recent years, all the rhetoric you hear these days of “fake news” and Rupert Murdoch’s monopoly on the news especially here in the UK, Elliot Carver becomes quite relevant as a media mogul villain, bent on manipulating headlines to convince the world to start a war, even if that means slaughtering people.
I’ll also add that I’m not overly keen on Sheryl Crow’s song. Can’t say I’m too mad about her voice, she sounds to me like a hoarse cat screeching away, lyrics are good though. What I don’t like about it was that it was a last minute song, so they had a song with the title in it. The song that was going to be the opening credits track was k.d lang’s Surrender which appears in the closing credits, and it will forever rub salt in my wound because it’s a much better song!
But the producers for some reason deemed Sheryl Crow to be more marketable than k.d lang so we’re left with what we got.

The music for the next film goes up a notch. David Arnold is the perfect successor to John Barry in writing the soundtrack. He writes the music to five films, did an album Shaken Not Stirred of alternative theme songs with different artists and he organised the concert last year to celebrate 60 years of Bond music. He wrote the end title song by KD Lang but one of the best is when he worked with Shirley Bassey and lyricist Don Black (Thunderball, Diamonds are Forever, Man With the Golden Gun)on the song No Good About Goodbye which used the es from his score for Quantum of Solace but never considered as the title track unfortunately.

It feels similar to what happened with John Barry with The Living Daylights, he wanted to have The Pretenders singing the main theme, but the producers went with a more commercially popular choice with a-ha, so The Pretenders got the closing theme (and the song that the henchman listens to) as a compromise, and those songs appear more in the score than the actual main theme

    Great reaction Jen!
Love this movie and the role played by Johnathan Pryce as Elliott Carver was so well done! And Gotz Otto, who played the main henchman apparently had the greatest and quickest audition in Bond history. Basically he walked in and told them "I'm big, I'm bad, and I'm German." 😀
Brosnan remains my favorite of the middle era Bonds by far, and I liked Dalton in the role. He just fits the Bond image so well. Such a good actor. And Michelle Yeoh was amazing. While the return to "disposable" Bond girls in the movies isn't something I liked too much (and poor Teri Hatcher), I really liked that Yeoh was consistent as a semi-foil/semi-teammate throughout this movie, much like Carey Lowell's Pam Bouvier (the DEA/ex-military pilot) in Licence to Kill.
I also liked seeing Joe Don Baker return as Wade. I still laugh every time he calls Bond "Jimbo". 😀
Also: You need to start the process of building your lair ASAP. I mean, really, you've talked to much about it to not do it now!

The James Bond Character is actually a Commander in the Royal Navy Reserve. He was recruited from there into the Secret Service. That's why his skills are so good in the water--he was a trained specialist. Just to refresh your memory, we see him in uniform at the beginning of You Only Live Twice (Connery) after he's fished out of the water after his burial at sea, and in The Spy Who Loved Me (Moore), also near the beginning, when he was at the Naval base discussing that their missing submarine had been tracked. Brosnan's hair is way too long for a military haircut here, but you saw some too-long haircuts in TSWLM also.
The first two Brosnan movies were the best of the four he made, with this one edging out Goldeneye--IMHO.
I read somewhere that the number one complaint about Goldeneye from fans was the lack of "Bond Music". Michelle Yeogh was the most badass Bond Girl ever.
My opinion is that the villain was a little weak in this one, and he didn't have a cool lair--just ordinary office buildings. And Bond-scale villainy in support of running sensational headlines doesn't feel plausible as a motive. There are already plenty of wars and sensation things to report on as it is. JMO. Loved Dr. Kaufman though--would have liked to see more of him.

This was the first one that came out after I had started watching Bond, so definitely a sentimental favorite. It's also legitimately awesome with Michelle Yeoh, the gadget-filled cell phone, remote-controlled car and buzz saw torpedos. I do wish they had a more memorable henchman than Stamper though, I think that would put this at an S-tier Bond film. I do love that even with Pierce in maximum quip mode, he still gets a chance to be a cold-hearted killer with the funny assassin

As usual Jen you’re spot on. K.D Lang’s Surrender is the superior song and should have been the main theme imo. And again the Bond theme back with a vengeance here. The main reason I enjoy your reviews of the Bond films is you understand the plot and get what’s going on. Makes it so much more enjoyable to watch. Certain other reviewers look like they’ve got a ? mark over their heads and not sure what’s happening. I think Bond’s done enough penetration to last a lifetime, don’t you think? 😅

That's the popular opinion for sure. I do like both songs though and I'm glad we got to keep both in the final cut. And I personally think they are placed in the right order. K.D. Lang's song feels more bombastic and triumphant, so it fits the ending perfectly. The other one has a sense of intrigue that works well for me at the beginning of the movie, but would be misplaced at the end.

38:53 actually the song is sung K.D. Lang. The name is "Surrender". It was supposed to be the official theme song of the movie until they changed to Sheryl Crow because the producers wanted someone more popular to sing the song. Some of the instrumentation of the song is sprinkled throughout the movie. Both the theme songs are actually great in their own right.

Tomorrow Never Dies has risen in my Bond rankings in recent years as Carver's plot about media controlling politics becomes frighteningly relevant 😅 and I love a weak villain who relies on their hench (even more when they meet a grisly end).
Michelle Yeoh is a top 5 Bond girl, the chopper 🏍 v chopper🚁 showdown is incrediblely tense, and two great songs. I also prefer the K.D. Lang, but her smoother version fits the credits better than Sheryl Crow.

About the James Bond theme in the Daniel Craig movies: In Casino Royale, David Arnold uses it only two times because James Bond is only becoming 007 in that movie. In Quantum of Solace he uses it more frequently. Even a guitar version for a scene in Bolivia.
The following composer Thomas Newman makes frequent use of the theme or parts of it, but more subtle.
Hans Zimmer in No Time to die uses it in a more "traditional" way.
