Ford 289 V-8 engine time-lapse rebuild (Fairlane, Mustang, GT350) | Redline Rebuild - S2E1

  • Ask and you shall receive! A 289 small-block Ford was high on the request list for our next Redline Rebuild, and we made it happen. Starting with a stock 289 engine out of a totaled 1964 Ford Fairlane, we decided to have some fun and upgrade from stock with a GT350-esque build. While Shelby started with a 271-hp HiPo K-code 289, our base engine needed quite a bit more massaging to get it up to snuff. With all period-correct upgrades including a new cam, Edelbrock F4B intake, carburetor, headers, and some mild porting of the heads, our output should come in at around 310 hp, up a good chunk from the stock 195 hp. Follow along as we compress three months of wrenching and 40,000 photos into an action-packed five minutes of engine rebuild glory. Now we just have to find a car in which to stick this beast.

Great video Holman moody a name I have not seen for years . My dad back in the 70s taught him to fly planes . And for his birthday he stole his 74 firebird had the engine rebuilt it even had a push button start my mother said she loved cranking up early in the mornings it would wake up the neighbors . Back then you could get away with a lot . The engine had insane horsepower . She would run airplane fuel in it . Lol dad hated cars he flew every where he went . Or mom drove him . He was afraid of cars . But hew flew jets in the air Force . He died 4 of July 76 I was born the next month . He owned his own flight school had 7 Yankee trainers flew for civil air patrol . He was killed while flying for the us undercover during that major drug cartel bust on East coast . That's a life you can hang your hat on . God bless and thanks for that moment . I still get choked up and we never met .

The 289 was a great engine and, if I remember correctly, would stand a lot of mods without becoming shrapnel. I also remember someone taking a 250 inline six, putting a modified cam in it, three Weber carbs, and doing a balancing and blueprinting job on it. This would have been back in the sixties. The output was claimed to be higher than the 289. I'd like to see someone do that sort of rebuild on a 250. Inline sixes are underrated by many folks.

Outstanding throttle response and durability. The last final mileage I recorded was around 208,000 and still purring when sold. You guys do it right!

This brings back so many memories! I rebuilt the 289 on my 67 notch back. I remember keeping the block and heads in my bedroom til I put them all together. I also rebuilt the C4 transmission it had. I tweaked the bands, drilled holes in the clutch drums and put in a B&M shift kit. When all was said and done the rear tires would turn 2 & 1/2 times when it shifted to 2nd gear then would bark the tires when it hit 3rd gear. Needles to say I used to go thru 4 or more U-joints in a year. I still have 35mm and 110 pics as well as polaroids. Those days are gone for good.

When I had to build a flathead back in 1959, my dad said it would be a great experience, we had to cut the ring groove out of the cylinder before rebuild began. Why don’t they do that now? Anyway, no real beef, but that experience with my dad on those cold winter days was great times that can’t be bought. And when that old flattie fired it was a chest busting sound and FUN! I sure wished he was around now, I’ve got a blue million questions to ask him. Great video, thanks for sharing!

Yes but they should get those 10 points taken away for using a Fram oil filter on that engine. Worst oil filters ever made....even if it might be just for initial break in, they're known to be extremely cheap and of poor quality.

Had a 289 in a 66 mustang coupe back in the 90's. I was in the middle of changing my oil and the portable phone wrang. Forgot to put the oil pan plug back in. I knew exactly how many quarts it held so I dumped them in and took off. Drove the car as I normally did in those days accelerator down 50 miles. The car sat a few hours and at the time I remember hot sizzling dripping noises but didn't think much about it. Drove the car back and it finally started to give me a few problems and feeling under powered. About a 1/2 mile from my driveway I could see where it all began, with a line of fresh oil making a trail out the driveway and up the street. 100 mile round trip, put plug back in and fill with more oil. Car drove fine for 3 more year until I had to rebuild the heads. Toughest engine I've ever owned.
