SRF41 - TUTUBAN / TAYUMAN RAILWAY YARD MANILA 2018

  • CORRECTION: Contrary to what I have been told earlier. The ROTEM car sets were a purchase, not a donation, for the Manila Linkage Project.

    Philippines 2018
    Tutuban / Tayuman Yard
    With all the pending changes to the railways of the Philippines, last month I made a couple of visits to the main railway yard to cover the situation on video and still camera.
    I was lucky enough to have been given official permission to enter the yard and various structures in order to make a historical record of it before it is all gone.
    In this first instalment, we take a general look at the yard and some of the railway movements. Future episodes will have a more in-depth look at the buildings and movements.
    All locomotives appearing on this video are General Electric U14C and U15C, delivered between 1973 and 1991. The 'Philippine National Railway' also operate a few U6B and U10B locomotives, both of which will appear in other episodes.
    Hope you enjoy.

    I wonder what loco head was used in 1985 when we travel from iriga to manila vise versa.i am really amazed by trains and engines. It's one of the reason why I pursue and graduated mechanical engineering!.thanks for the videos Sir!😀👍👏🏻

      Thanks for the kind words.
      In 85 it could quite likely have been one of the 900 class as in the above videos.
      Think the older shovelnose GEs were still around then also.

    Back in 1997 I believe that was, I rode the PNR Train from Chrysanthemum Village to Buendia going to college. When the Carmona line was still "alive". PNR really still has a very long way to go. Nice video though!

    • @NeathSpadge
      @NeathSpadge  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanking you.
      If plans come to fruition, you will be able to do that run again either this year or the next.
      Carmona has been inspected with a view to reopening it.

    • @jamcradleandmtb1023
      @jamcradleandmtb1023 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I went home last year and the “line” is now an alley lined up with “squatters” in both sides. Even the rail itself was already gone! Riding PNR then was more of a necessity because of the construction of Skyway 1. I hope for all the best for PNR though. Thanks again for the video.👍🏻

    • @lmlmd2714
      @lmlmd2714 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jamcradleandmtb1023 Squatters are definitely the biggest problem facing any meaningful rehabilitation of PNR. Even where the lines still exist and are usable, the ROW is still compromised by squatter housing, which restricts the ability to run a modern, punctual and reasonable speed service. Within the Manila commuter routes, the benefits of rehabilitation justify the social upheaval and financial costs of relocating squatters to permanent homes, but on routes outside the city, it's harder, beyond a handful of possible routes, it's difficult for PNR to make a convcing case to government. The routes I think that do have a long term potential are:
      * The existing Manila-Calamba commuter rail (this really does justify a full-blown modernisation to electrified twin-track)
      * Manila north commuter rail, again electrified and twinned, would certainly be worth running to Meycauayan from Tutuban.
      Running beyond the commuter zone, re-opening the line to Legaspi to improve resilience to weather and operational reliability by relocating squatters, improving earthworks, draining and bridges and reballasting. Improvements in line speed, by replacing lightweight and worn out rail, tighting up rail tolerances, re-signalling with a basic but modern system, to ultimately allow 100km/h or 120km/h operation where practical without major deviations being needed.
      Calamba-Batangas branch line - has strong potential for large amount of freight and passengers transferring to/from ferries.
      Meycauayan -Clark: Extension north to Clark via San Fernando and Angeles, with a branch to Subic bay, has been strong passenger and freight potential.

      I think the central section of the Manila-Legaspi line is badly washed out. The problem is that for decades, the line has only recieved bare minimum maintinance, if that. There's no resilience left in the line against bad weather.

  • @benchmarker6197

    Tutuban Station needs a massive cleanup and beautification including the trains and coaches. Those discarded train coaches should be collected and thrown into the sea for fish to dwell and allow more space for future use. I wonder with the contruction of the Tutuban Malolos line will the new and old coaches be mixed in that station?

    • @NeathSpadge
      @NeathSpadge  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      That would both make the overloading problem even worse and upset those who donated the rollingstock. Not really a good move either way.
      The old and new lines cannot be mixed.
      One is an elevated standard gauge system, the other a ground based narrow gauge one.
      They will be next to each other, I believe on the west side of the yard, but not mixed.

    Are Those Electric Train Why They You Use a Locomotive Can They Build a Power Pole?

    • @NeathSpadge
      @NeathSpadge  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They could theoretically build overhead, but there is no real income source. The government won't make the funds available and ticket revenue struggles to just keep the system going.
      It was just easier to loco haul them and place generators in one car of each set.
      However, plans to rebuild the system could see it all become a modern electrified railway in the near future.
      For this reason I have taken a lot of video of the main yard recently. A lot more is still to come.
