OK it's one thing putting me out of business reviewing a bunch of synths so nicely in one short video, but you saying drowning a synth in reverb and delay like it's a bad thing is crossing a line!!
I just found this channel...nice to see youtubers in FRIENDLY banter! @loopop, you have helped me choose synths and to learn them after I've bought them. Noir et Blanc Vie, looking forward to enjoying your channel!
As someone who's not a musician but loves to play around with sound-generating electronics, I find the keyboard on the MicroFreak is a lot of fun to use. It won't help me learn how to play a piano, but the instant control it can give you over various functions is really fun to play around with. For people who complain about it, I usually tell them it's cheap and easy to get a MIDI controller if you want a normal keyboard, but it's way harder to get a keyboard like the MicroFreaks as an addon so I'm glad Arturia made that design choice.
Thanks yo! Just taking my time with it, I don't think the hard part if what I do, it's what you do...actually being consistent...that's one heck of a challenge.
I own a Micro freak and minibrute2S. I love the sounds I accidentally create on the micro freak. I also love the patterns I've accidentally created on the minibrute2S. I would love to own the big toys eventually one day.
I bought a MatrixBrute to stop myself getting into modular 😅 so far its giving me all the weird sound design I need. Plus it has audio in 🎉 you can use it as a crazy powerful analogue guitar pedal
I bought the matrix to get me out of modular!, or at least curve the addiction! I'd say matrix + micromonsta 2 can conver 99% of synth wants and needs.
I picked up a MicroFreak as my first synth ever largely based on your review of it (with an assist from The Pedal Zone). I don't own it anymore, but it was a great gateway drug for hardware synths.
Oh yay, I didn't like the idea of the microfreak, but seeing as how the minifreak exists, it fixed all my complaints about the original. Tone is very different than typical digital stuff.
I really like your reviews. You always separate the “subjectives” and the “objectives” and give very fair points for each product you talk about. You don’t come across as to “in your face” with your opinions you simply state the facts and what you personally may or may not like about it whilst explaining why. Just thought I’d let you know that :)
Thank you for saying this, I 100% accept that as a musician my work style and preferences are my own. A lot of people just wanna tell you if things are good or bad, but almost nothing is that black or white.
The minibrute 2s sequencer is amazing. The 2 CV mod tracks can be changed between different voltage ranges an envelope mode that turns them into decay envelopes with per step decay control and an lfo with sin, square, saw up, saw down and s&h. Its one of the most impressive sequencers on an analog synth at its price.
Thanks for the overview. For me it is the Polybrute. The left side of the instrument appears to be crowded with controls because the designers included a separate knob for each individual function, I think. Less menu diving. In the beginning I overused those effects but know I learned that less is more. Raw sounds can be very effective in music production, as they have a natural and unprocessed quality that can add a sense of authenticity and raw energy to a track
Awesome! Thank you for the awesome demo video 📹. Super well presented. I have the Polybrute and love it, and I am wondering if I should get A Matrix as well.....or wait for the next synth they put out. I hope all is well in Your world 🌎. Mark Bensette Aux Bois 🇨🇦.
You have a great gift young man. I have been waiting for a while to find out the name of that song if you completed and released it from your (My ACTUAL SYNTH STUDIO Workflow) upload 6 months ago i love that song.
I got a MiniFreak for Christmas and I fell in love with it even though it covers similar territory as my Hydrasynth. It's definitely a contender for a great "first synth".

Only have a Microfreak and it’s been a fun lil thing. First thing I did was tie the Chords inversion parameter to the LFO for sorta a bitchippy/bittrippy thing? Then separately I found out if you slide the “word” parameter of the Speech instrument just after it starts speaking it glitches out. I don’t know what to do with that but I’m sure something ‘ll come up eventually.
As far as sound design goes the Polybrute is the best I've ever used in my life, and as limiting as the 6 voices feels, they are my favorite 6 voices ever. Maybe someday we'll get a Polybrute 2 with a full set of voices and audio in, may my wallet forgive me when it drops.
@@harrymanilow If they do release a 16-voice polybrute, I'd expect it to cost at least twice as much. After all, pretty much the entire synth (minus the controls and the effects section) needs to be duplicated for every voice
I own 2 Keysteps (Org), a Beatstep, a Microbrute, a Minibrute 2S, and a Drumbrute (Org)- What got me started down the Arturia “rabbit hole” was the Keystep, with it’s awesome keyboard (considering it’s size), it’s numerous connectivity possibilities (again, considering it’s size) next was the super-fun to use Beatstep (would love to get Pro versions of both, if I could ever afford them!) next was the Microbrute, which I purchased after hearing an absolutely incredible set from someone playing one of these (along with a drum machine) then became convinced to get the 2S after seeing Loopop’s review of it here on TH-cam (was torn between the two versions, but decided on the 2S because of it’s 64 step sequencer) Next, I really, really want a Minifreak (I’d felt that way about the Microfreak until it’s larger “brother” came out!
I have the og drum brute and mini brute plus the mini freak and for what they are, I really like them. Never found the funds/necessity to get the matrix or poly but maybe one day I will. Arturia products are really good and next to KORG they are my 2nd favorite brand. Good people-good products. Speaking of people, can we consider the ASM Hydrasynth as a distant cousin? The only cons I have about the polybrute are the lack of an input as you mentioned, but also there are a couple of parameters that I wish could be mod destinations such as the arp/seq rate

Buuuut from what I've heard in reviews about the minifreak, it sounds much richer and fuller. So I'm interested in getting one, although a macrofreak, or maybe it would be called matrixfreak? would be even cooler :D
MatrixBrute is the GOAT! Since it's been discontinued, I'm actually hoping they may work on an MKII version of it. With more digital implementation like wavetables, a large touch display instead of the matrix buttons - to draw complex LFO Step-sequencing stuff (like Xfer Serum or Massive), instant patch recall, easier diving, and maybe even customizing wavetables. That be an ultimate hybrid dream-synth with insane sonic possibilities ⚡⚡
I played an Origin a whiiiillleee back. I had a friend borrowing one from a studio in San Francisco. It was buggy due to age, and some sort of power supply issue. Very cool synth, although I wasn't familiar with architecture or as skilled with sound design and playing at that time, so I can't say I was able to really grasp the depth of the engine. That being said, a Polybrute is one of the only pieces of hardware that is interesting to me at the moment.
Microfreak is so great!!!!!! I love that they constantly add firmware updates that make it get new life and oscillators. No built in FX is kind of a drag but with pedals it really sings
Fully agree, they kept making it better and better. I can see the freak as a great foundation for all kinds of updates...it's only limited by the cpu and the devs.
got the minibrute 2s as my first hardware synthesizer and it took me a bit to get up to speed with it but now that I am there I love it. Its a bass beast.
Do you have any synth tutorials? Like how to read synth parameters on themselves and plugins? Or how to recreate any sound? Or what each brand excels at, so if you're going for ____ sound, go for this brand? The synth world is massive and you do really good on your channel
Thank you for the compliment. Tutorials, well, I do, but they’re from a long long time ago. I kinda got over doing tutorials and stuff, not that it’s bad, I just think other people are way better at it than me BoBeats or Loopop for sure are the go to, I really just like making story based videos about music instruments etc, so yeah, sorry.
I always wanted a Matrixbrute because I LOVE the oscillators of the Minibrute, and I imagine that the Matrixbrute has that raw oscillator sound with all of the extra features. That being said, I own the Minibrute and OG drumbrute, and I love Minibrute the best.
I sure hope you do an update of this content. I'd love to see one more Arturia poly.. Similar to PB , but at least 8 voices. Add to that audio inputs. Now, that is what I'd like to see... Come on Arturia... This year you could do it...
Matrixbrute kind of disappointed me. There were a lot of obvious things I'd want to patch in the matrix that were not possible? I can't recall which exactly because I don't have one in front of me now. But I seem to recall that there wasn't a way to patch noise to filter cutoff.

Tee hee hee, I’ve had it for quite a while. Maybe 6+ months, I really found a fond place for it since originally I didn’t think it was useful to me since I have so many synths already. It’s to me the perfect expression/sound design beast. Arturia killed it with this one minus that one thing I mentioned.
My first analog synthesizer was a microbrute which I still use on most of my sets. And the Drumbrute impact is an amazing piece I can't believe I was lacking for so long... :)
Yeah, drumbrute Impact could use one other snare sound, but besides that it's fantastic (well the filter thing) but for the price, how can you go wrong.
@@noiretblancvie-afterhours Ah yes, so I have worked out how to get around both of those "cons" :D Sometimes I'll run the DBI through my Microbrute's filter. Having LP, HP and BP is very useful! I have a boss rc-300 so I like to loop the Drumbrute sequences which allows me to record parameter changes so I can have as many different varieties of each sound as I please! And a bonus tip... You can use the kick as an oscillator! If you make a pattern with only a kick playing every 16th with the roller to max And tempo above 200 you can make some good drones
I still have my Arturia Origin Keyboard (Serial #6!) - sadly it doesn't get too much use, but it's beautifully crafted and sounds awesome - maybe a little less intuitive to use however. I don't know how many of these actually got made, but I suspect not many, and most were sold as the desktop model without the keyboard. I've never seen another one.
I mean, I appreciate it everytime you say it, humbled since I don't do this much anymore...thank you, it's always nice to see familiar names here after all these years!
I still have my Microbrute, that was my first analog synth some 6-7 years ago and taught me a tonne about subtractive synthesis. It almost never gets used any more, but I'm just too emotionally attached to sell it ;)
The polybrute and matrixbrute are ambitious but they don't sound that amazing to me. The minifreak is the first that I find interesting enough to consider buying. But I'd still just get the software if they ever put it on sale. I'll wait.. and I'm sure that their next big one will be even better. I think they're just figuring out how to do them right.
Zzounds is fantastic. I bought a $1600 synth through their payment plan. It started shutting down for no reason. I returned it and they did not charge me a dime for shipping and refunded every penny. I ordered the same synth again. Same problem! I returned that one. It cost me nothing to do so. Again no return shipping and no restocking fee. They did not charge me one dime for either synth or its return. I don't think they even charged me for the original shipping. GREAT company.
@@NoirEtBlancVie Well, I was really surprised because I think the company has a reputation for quality. It was a Sequential Rev 2. TO ANYONE READING THIS: I'm not saying Sequential is a bad company. Every company produces a lemon from time to time. I just happened to get two in a row. Such things happen sometimes. Thanks for your interesting videos.
What you wrote seems reasonable. I wasn't extremely upset when it happened. I'm 70 and fully realize "life happens." I might have been upset if they tried to blame the problem on me and/or not refunded my money. I was completely happy with the retailer.
I would love a PolyBrute but I would never use it as much as it costs, if that makes sense... I love how it looks and even better, how it sounds. If so diverse and sounds brilliant! But still...
Honestly disappointed on the quick blip of the Matrixbrute. It is so powerful compared to just about anything else in the line up, and the paraphonic modes are killer. If it didn't weigh a metric ton.... 😆
I know Jeff, i could only go into Perfect Circuit and review the Matrixbrute, I kinda asked for a lot of synths to borrow at the same time, it was just kinda a nightmare to gather the synths to film. 😔
I had a matrix brute. Holy shit was a fucking synth that was. Not friendly for amateur musicians/producers but something to invest in and learn little by little.
I'm a big fan of the original minibrute - great live synth - sounds great, everything is at your finger tips, and it isn't massive (just about fits in my rucksack).
You’re a legend, I toured for quite a while and now feel like I’d never again with anything heavier than a Yamaha CP73 and a Prophet 6. I did a couple gigs with my SV1, I just can’t. I feel too tired and weak now in my 30’s 😅
@@noiretblancvie-afterhours I already see a lot of similarity between MB2S sequencer and minifreak sequencer (from videos) already.. 'S' version would be great
Love the Drumbrute Impact. A drummer friend of mine🪘 saw me use it during a DJ set, I suggested he get one.He purchased it and incorporated it into his live drumset at another venue. They gave him a bump in pay for that gig because the crowed loved it.

When did you get a polybrute, how have I missed this? I want one so bad still ;_; *smashes like*
Tee hee hee, I’ve had it for quite a while. Maybe 6+ months, I really found a fond place for it since originally I didn’t think it was useful to me since I have so many synths already. It’s to me the perfect expression/sound design beast. Arturia killed it with this one minus that one thing I mentioned.
What about the Origin?
My first analog synthesizer was a microbrute which I still use on most of my sets.
And the Drumbrute impact is an amazing piece I can't believe I was lacking for so long... :)
Yeah, drumbrute Impact could use one other snare sound, but besides that it's fantastic (well the filter thing) but for the price, how can you go wrong.
@@noiretblancvie-afterhours
Ah yes, so I have worked out how to get around both of those "cons" :D
Sometimes I'll run the DBI through my Microbrute's filter.
Having LP, HP and BP is very useful!
I have a boss rc-300 so I like to loop the Drumbrute sequences which allows me to record parameter changes so I can have as many different varieties of each sound as I please!
And a bonus tip... You can use the kick as an oscillator!
If you make a pattern with only a kick playing every 16th with the roller to max
And tempo above 200 you can make some good drones
I love my microfreak, I love my drum brute, but the keystep pro is what makes my project what it is
I still have my Arturia Origin Keyboard (Serial #6!) - sadly it doesn't get too much use, but it's beautifully crafted and sounds awesome - maybe a little less intuitive to use however. I don't know how many of these actually got made, but I suspect not many, and most were sold as the desktop model without the keyboard. I've never seen another one.
I like reviews, but you do whatever you like. :)
😁 I mean, I'm just not the best. I'm too subjective about it. I like my story telling synths, but those are so hard to make.
I still think that Polybrute is one hell of a beast... hopefully one day!
I ever tell you how much I love your channel? Wait I probably did. Well I did it again.
I mean, I appreciate it everytime you say it, humbled since I don't do this much anymore...thank you, it's always nice to see familiar names here after all these years!
The microfreak is by far my favourite Arturia product.
Should also review Arturia's first hardware synthesizer .. The long forgotten Arturia Origin..
Thanks for the great content!
I wish I could, I just need a hook up...I can't buy it, it's like $1500 😪
Microfreak is the perfect companion for nomad musician, it's cheap, sounds great and offer so much for the price! You can't go wrong with it!
NOIR THE MADLAD, YOU ACTUALLY DID IT
Haha, I mean, I had a lot of free time and thought a full video on each would be bizarre for my channel. Hopefully this saves people time ;)
I still have my Microbrute, that was my first analog synth some 6-7 years ago and taught me a tonne about subtractive synthesis.
It almost never gets used any more, but I'm just too emotionally attached to sell it ;)
Totally, the microbrute teaches a lot of people (even me) that I suck at making my own sounds. lol I write songs, but I am no sound designer.
Polybrute is a fucking killer on all accounts but minifreak is my suggestion to everyone right now.
When polyfreak comes out can you imagine....I think Arturia is so in the zone over the last 2 years!
Damn, that’s actually awesome…but inquiring minds must know, what synth was that? 😳
@Cheeses_K_Riced I see. They have no "brick and mortar" shops. They are completely online.
Thanks for the info.
What you wrote seems reasonable. I wasn't extremely upset when it happened. I'm 70 and fully realize "life happens." I might have been upset if they tried to blame the problem on me and/or not refunded my money.
I was completely happy with the retailer.
Dang the Polybrute got pianos! Def gonna try and copy those on my polysynth some time…
It does, I use the presets and feels like endless possibilities!
would love to know the patch notes for the mb2 bass :p
I with I remembered...it's pretty thiccc
Noir with the 1v9 synth hyper carry review! This could be a new esport.
LOL. My attempt at a jubilee thumbnail was the hardest part of making this entire videeo 😝
I would love a PolyBrute but I would never use it as much as it costs, if that makes sense... I love how it looks and even better, how it sounds. If so diverse and sounds brilliant! But still...
I still can’t with the microfreak “keys,” lol.
I’d stick with the PolyBrute. 😎
I like those sounds at the beginning of the vid too.
Polybrute is interesting, I feel like I have so many thoughts after finishing...I'll share on the LS :)
The microfreak has cable buzz. Big nono for me. And yes it does sound cold. At that point just get a good plugin like hive2
@@NoirEtBlancVie totally get it it's a huge topic to do justice
I had a matrix brute. Holy shit was a fucking synth that was. Not friendly for amateur musicians/producers but something to invest in and learn little by little.
I'm a big fan of the original minibrute - great live synth - sounds great, everything is at your finger tips, and it isn't massive (just about fits in my rucksack).
I agree, the minibrute is all you need in most cases.
I actually gig with my Polybrute weekly! In comparison to my 88 key Kronos, the Polybrute is actually not that bad to travel with.
You’re a legend, I toured for quite a while and now feel like I’d never again with anything heavier than a Yamaha CP73 and a Prophet 6. I did a couple gigs with my SV1, I just can’t. I feel too tired and weak now in my 30’s 😅
@@NoirEtBlancVie I feel you bro as I'm high-5ing 40 soon. I've been considering a "travel board" setup and just keep all the heavy gear at the studio.
always blown away by the polybrute each time I hear it. too bad it's just too freaking big for me; besides the price.
I am a micro brute and have a mini freak on order
You know the MaxiFreak is coming…
SupaFreak
@@NoirEtBlancVie touché
microfreak and minibrute 2s are the best! (the only ones I own) lol :D
Peeps really do like the 2S. Minifreak S could be cool if possible I think.
@@noiretblancvie-afterhours I already see a lot of similarity between MB2S sequencer and minifreak sequencer (from videos) already.. 'S' version would be great
My favorite Arturia ‘synth’ products are not synthesizers. Two Rackbrute 6U’s + BeatStep Pro have opened up the eurorack rabbit hole for me
I have a few of them
Microfreak works for me. The rest are OK. But I like to get freaky.
Me too. I nasty with it 😁
new noir et blanc vie :)
Every now and then ;)
🎯
I just don’t like that Arturia manufacturers all of their products in China.
Today I learned Zzounds is pronounced “zzounds” and not “Z z sounds”
Love the Drumbrute Impact. A drummer friend of mine🪘 saw me use it during a DJ set, I suggested he get one.He purchased it and incorporated it into his live drumset at another venue. They gave him a bump in pay for that gig because the crowed loved it.
Origin is like acces virus, wavestate and bit of hartmann neuron in one synth - sonically.for me - groundbreaking synth.
