  • It’s time to get out the grow lights and heated propagators for some chilli sowing! Chillies take a long time to germinate and grow which is why they're one of the first seeds I sow. In this video you’ll see how I sow them, hear all my tips and tricks to get your own seeds started as well as see the equipment I like to use. Have you started any of your chillies and peppers yet? I would love to hear what varieties you’re growing this year!
I’m excited to be testing out the Spider Farmer SF-1000 grow lights in my home greenhouse cabinet set up. For more information and where to buy, follow the link below.

It’s so nice seeing people your age enjoying gardening and growing plants, there would be a lot less trouble in the world if people grew more of their own food rather than eating all the processed food in the shops

Very cool cabinet! Here's a little trick I learned a couple of years ago that was a game changer on growing pepper. The wet towel method! Take a paper towel and dampen it (not dripping wet, but well ,moist), put 6 seeds on it - spaced, then fold the towel over twice. Place it in a labeled zip bag and leave just a little bit of the bag open. Put in a hot place (heat mat, radiator, top of fridge). Check back within a week and see what has sprouted. Pull those out and plant, etc., etc. Speeds up the germination and you can cast out the ones that are not viable. Revolutionary!

I remember my dad preparing his seed trays in the UK in Feb. I now live in Nova Scotia Canada, the ground is frozen solid for the first 12 inches and freezes as deep at 2+ feet. We can't think about prepping seed tays for another 2 months yet, but it will happen. You produce great videos, thank you for sharing your allotment etc. with us.

Cloches, cold frames, greenhouses, hothouses ... all ways of extending the season and countering the vagaries of weather. As you say, although it is cold and wet outside you can still steal a march on Mother Nature with that propagator cabinet. Thanks for yet another engaging video Katrina. Now I will plant a seed in your mind ... online courses. Think about it, you must have a superb bank of video film that you could edit into "How to" courses that can bring you much-deserved revenue.

I wasn't watching the video, I was just listening to the previous video in the International Women's Day TH-cam playlist when this one started. I was downstairs washing up so couldn't see the screen but it was nice just hearing you speak. You have a lovely voice, I could hear you smile as you speak. It's a great subject as well, growing ones own food, something a lot more of us should give a go, like baking. A little trial, a little error but then comes delicious tasty treats the satisfaction from which money cannot buy. Keep up the wonderful work, I subscribed.

All your recommendations for sowing, etc. are spot on. As with most things in life timing is everything. I've learned the hard way, planting too late and starting seeds indoors too early with poor light conditions. Your LED light cabinet is a great addition. I'm impressed with the LED light panel and the equipment that goes with it. I love your presentations, thanks for making your videos to share. Cheers from Canada!

Chilli and Pepper sowing and growing is my most exciting thing at the moment. Next month it’ll be Tomatoes and so on, but these 🌶 plants are just ace. I remember you starting them off last year too. I freeze my spares as well, so very interested to see how your Scotch Bonnets do. I have eight chilli varieties on the go this year now that I have levelled up my grow light situation - Mars Hydro lights hanging below Amazon Basic shelving in a spare room here. Your indoor greenhouse cabinet looked absolutely superb! I want one now!

What a neat propagator cabinet! Can't wait to see how your seedlings do, good luck!
I started my pepper, tomato and tomatillo seeds indoors this year, but I decided to try germinating them on damp paper towels inside ziploc bags which I placed directly onto a heat mat. I had really good results, even though for the most part I used pretty old seeds (5-10 years old). I moved them into modules as soon as the started to sprout, and now they're out in the poly greenhouse, and seem to be thriving. I just take them indoors when it seems like it might dip below freezing overnight. They seem to be fine with the amount of light they get at my latitude, but I'm about 20 degrees further south than you are. Fingers crossed they grow big and strong! I'm trying lemon drop and sugar rush peach this year, I think you mentioned them in past videos :)

That is such a beautiful cabinet and I enjoyed the little peek into your home, it is lovely. Black Hungarian is my absolute favorite. You do take quite a bit more care with them than I do though. I don't use a heat mat and they do fine. Midwest region, USA. It is a balmy 6 degrees Fahrenheit today and snow and ice are covering the ground. I cant wait to see the video about your little indoor greenhouse.

I started to grow my own plants a bit last year, but this year I want to indulge more seriously. I don’t have a beautiful mini greenhouse, but we have one large aquarium and one medium size. I want to try to see if I can start seeds inside on home using a heat mat and see about some lights. We can’t plant in the ground here until end of May, so this would help at getting a jump start. It won’t be chillies 🥵 but 🫑 peppers, squash, cucumbers and then there’s flowers.
Thanks and love following your gardening videos 👍❤️😊

I found a plant that I thought was a bell pepper plant, but it shaped itself into 2 chilis about 3 inches long. I'm not one to add chilis to my dishes--don't like hot, spicy is okay. The only chili I grow is the Hawaiian chili peppers that I crush and add to shoyu (soy sauce) for oysters. Others make chili water. I think I'll try adding the 2 chilis to my salsa. Aluminum foil to bounce light back. Brilliant! Why the vermiculite?

Last year I used grow lights for the first time. Sadly the only place I have for them is in the basement so maybe it is a temperature issue but my seeds did not fair well.
I had almost 100% germination across my chilis, tomatoes, cabbages and so forth, but they refused to progress beyond initial sprouted leaves.
The tomatoes recovered when I transplanted them outside but the chili’s never did so I had zero peppers and eggplants last year.

Hi very good garden channel. you have a lot of different chilli seeds do they all grow in UK. I am in Scotland I have tried to grow chillies from seeds but no luck. Do you grow them outside in summer.

Hi Katrina, really helpful video, thank you! Am interested to know more about how you using coir with other seedlings including planting on. Do you have a coir block link we can use or recommendation where to buy? Looking forward to seeing your cabinet video, looks great! 🌱💚

IKEA sell the coir. I find it a great medium for seed germination and so much better than peat for the environment.

Thanks for letting me know Christina, will look it up. I’ve used coir pots for chillis before but not for other plants so am interested in giving it a try.

Have you worked with Charles Dowding? He’s a great gardener, using the NoDig method. I think you are a great presenter as well.

I follow Charles' no-dig methods and had the pleasure of meeting him a couple of years ago at a lecture. He's a wonderful man!

How far apart do you plant your different varieties of peppers? I've heard that peppers easily cross-pollinate with "heat" being dominate. An innocent bell pepper could taste like a jalapeño from seeds that come from cross-pollinated parents. One bite and SURPRISE .. lol. In any case, keep up the good work

Just wondering where did you get your polytunnel from originally? As finding it difficult to find good quality one that doesn't cost too much online xx

I have started my saved pepper seeds from last years fruits which I cross pollinated to make them more unique and hopefully healthier. I have showcased the seed varieties on my latest video on my channel. I have also got some of the hybrid fruits on the plants from last year on the top right of my channel page :)

Hi I'm planning to move home and want to plant fast growing long flowering plants now to make things look great. Could you please suggest some, also fast growing ground cover plants. Part of my garden is covered in mesh to keep cats away, I need to remove this.

    One thing
Don't put the thermometer probe in the pot of compost you will not get the proper heat on your mat that way.
Leave it loose in your cabinet and you will get better heat = better germination and quicker.

Just wondering, why the preference to cover with vermiculite and not just top with a little more coco? Beautiful smile btw ;)
