- In today's video I thought it would be a do plant chores with me vlog. I will be doing a few of my houseplant chores. I'll be repotting a few houseplants in my go-to aroid potting mix. Things that have helped me decorate my shelf is creating levels. Like stacking plants on other empty pots or just random bowls or vases!

Same here! Also adding in objects to break the plants up, like a little terrarium or candle or sparkly bauble. I got a lot of my inspo from @mypetitegarden’s shelves, she’s amazing at decorating them
I do the same. Also if I know it won't get knocked over, I'll sometimes put floor plant stands on a shelf. Especially if it's trailing. Then one plant is raised and you can still fit more underneath.
@@HarliG, I was going to suggest the same thing; creating alternating height gives the shelf depth and interest. I place small plants on pedestals meant for pillar candles. This allows me to enjoy the pedestals all year long and not just on special occasions. It also gives me an excuse to go "thrifting" because I love a good deal. Also, a pedestal allows my string plants to benefit from the grow light and have enough room to trail. Tall cake pedestals work well for larger plants. I use cloches on my shelves as well. I have found a few cloches at thrift stores, however, I found a huge 14" diameter cloche at HomeGoods just yesterday for only $20! A lot of stuff can fit under a cloche that large. I put my humidity loving Selaginella, and also perlite and moss propagations, under it. It looks so much better than a plastic bag and the reflective quality of the glass is beautiful. It draws the eye into the shelf to have a peek at what's inside. I propagated five Alocasia silver dragon corms this way and they all rooted, are loving it, and they look so cute inside the dome!

Hide the hook under something fun! a christmas ornament, a big bow, an origami shape, a bunch of dried flowers, a pinecone, some actual artwork, a post-it note with words of encouragement for the plant to keep climbing...
Your philodendron in the bathroom is sitting inside of a pie plate! You bake pies in them but you could also use them for like brownies, cornbread, etc.
The best thing I did for plant styling is having a common color scheme for the planters (I do whites and tans mostly) and alternating the height of the plants next to each other. It's less interesting to look at a straight line of plants all the same height than it is to have a variation. Little plant stands and different height planters/planters with feet help a lot with that!
I do that same mostly white with white and black to match my kitchen
That pine cactus. Is a euphoria guntheri. There are many kinds but looks like the one I have. They trail and there flowers are small and seed right after. They love the sun. And can do pretty well inside during winter time. Mine flowers and seeds every year. I love mine. I took a piece from my mom too and it's getting bigger every summer. I also share any new plants I get. Mom's are the best!! 🥰🤩

The big box stores carry the amazing curved wire, drywall hooks. They’re sturdy and can hold heavy items. They’re virtually invisible and when removed, leave a tiny hole not much bigger than the head of a pin.
You can also push them into the drywall because they have a sharp point.

My best plant styling advice specifically for shelves with grow lights is to group like with like. So for example, group all you cacti together so it feels like a little desert habitat and same for other plant habitat types and it looks more organized almost like a microclimate exhibit at a botanical gardens that way!
Do a small gallery wall right there on that wall and get some cute decorative hooks from hobby lobby. The gallery wall would make the hooks look like they’re not out of place
Respect to spouses but COME ON! If you aren't renting you can add a nail. Or even many nails! Its easy to remove and add a dab of filler if you ever want to sell. Plan out exactly where it needs to go so there's not random errors everywhere. You had the babies, you get to feather the nest!

How their household runs is how THEIR household runs. She pushed out the babies but maybe Ryan's THING is he hates holes in the walls, we don't know lol. Maybe a solution to her a problem would be the most helpful! 🤷🏾♀️

it's a pie plate and that what i use mine for too! LOL I also use the lids from the coffee cans, well, they aren't really cans anymore, they are plastic containers, but I use the lids to set my plants on.
I like the wood beads. Maybe cover the hook with a small plant, candle holder, or corbel.
Harli - For those wall hooks, try hot gluing some faux foliage or bark on it. Even pebbles. You could dress up that hook so it looks more like a natural anchor.
Just paint the hook same color as the wall. Love this idea and I may do the same. Your plants always look so good.
for hooks, i've seen this green leaf shape thing that is double sided taped to the wall. on another note, when the plant grows enough, it should cover the white hook you have.
Enjoyable video, Harli! You sure seem happier about life and your plants lately! I suggest a piece of art over the hook until the plant fills out and then the plant will hide the hook. I’d like an updated plant tour😊

Love this video! I would recommend the smaller clear command hooks with silver hooks or even the small clear wire plastic hooks for your long plants. For your plant shelf, take everything off and start of scratch and see how you feel one plant at a time.💗🌱
When the plant grows out you could cover the hook with leaves or paint the hook to match the wall.
As a former pre-k teacher, when I hum the jeopardy song it also ends with me humming "tip me over and pour me out" 😂😂 I feel you on the kids song on the brain!
I think for the beaded trellis you should make a couple more swoops on the wall so it looks like decor that your plant decided to climb on
That baking dish looks like a pie plate for baking a pie.
You could put an air plant on the end of the beads to cover up the command hook. Or, you could remove the hook and just use some 3M tape directly on the end-bead and stick it to the wall!
You could get a small hanging mirror or phot frame and put it over the hook! It is a hook after all 😄
Everytime you sing the kid songs my baby girl stops what she's doing and watches you haha 🤣. When she's on her play mat while I water plants.
The first plant is “Song of India, Dracaena Reflexa Dragon Tree”. I have one and it’s one of my first houseplants. Very slow growing, but very easy care.

I only have trouble repotting vines. Others plants I don’t mind so much. But vines are hard to get arranged in a visually pleasing way sometimes. I recently did one and it didn’t look right the way the vines were falling so I had to redo it. I like when you put similar/same plants together. I’ve found that makes the collection seem much less overwhelming. And it makes them look nicer in the pot when they’re full and fabulous!
I love your videos! I would move the plant to other side and switch the hook to your cabinet. It would blend into the white cabinet and could continue its trailing on the cabinet.
You need some clear plant risers on the shelf, it’ll make the ones in the back higher than the ones in the front and it looks really good I think! I can send you the link to them on Amazon.
Play with the heights of the different plants inside each space and then consider the whole; create some islands by grouping some plants together and space the islands with a bit more space then within the island itself. Also consider the color matching of the planters. Anyway don't worry too much, each of us has a different sense of the aesthetics and everybody changes idea every 5 minutes, it's normal!
Also you can choose some plants in each space and let the focus fall on them. It's hard to explain from 15k miles away LOL
For the beaded trellis, you could make it longer, to the center of the desk, then put 1-3 wall planters above the desk, with a trailing plant to cover the hook.

No but the beaded string as a sort of trellis is genius! If you wanted to have a hook that makes more of a statement but in a cute way you could try looking for an antique jewelry hook.
I get nervous about reporting too. I worry I’ll find something in the soil that needs help- like root rot, pests, anything. Currently, I’m trying to help plants on the struggle bus. I’ve found root rot in 2 of them- but the plants are doing ok. So to the “hospital” section they go!
I love white pots or gray with some pops of color or cool vintage thrifted pots.
I love the bead idea! Those hooks come in clear with a metal hook.
My plant styling tips are taller in back, in the neutral pots, shorter in front with the colorful planters. And space between them so you can see each plant.
I bought a pack of acrylic risers in different sizes from amazon to use for my plant shelf and they added a lot of dimension and made the shelves look a lot fuller.

Hahaha that's crazy your mom is a groomer. I'm a groomer and also a crazy plant person. Having my own salon, sometimes it's often overwhelming, I love that you both move the plants from/to one another when you're overwhelmed!

And add a tier shelf towards the back on your white shelf like one that goes all the way across
You could get a little screw in hook, they are lightweight and come in a package of about 20. They only leave a tiny hole.
3m has clear hooks. Well, the back part that sticks to wall is clear but the hook is metal but thinner. I used them doing the exact thing you’re trying to do and with the same plant!!

Cane Begonias do great if you cut them back, when mine get leggy I cut them back and prop the tops. The nubs grow back every time!
I feel like the Ikea shelf needs something like how you pulled your mantle together. Like a group/row of cuttings in front that dangle.
Subhastatum or Adansonii would also look bomb with the grow lights. Something about sitting down and admiring the under colors or the holes with the grow lights just hits the happy chemicals differently.

You could use a Hercules hook! leaves a nail-sized hole but is a lot more secure

Where I live, we call that first Dracaena, a 'Song of India' ...... Not sure that's the variety or official name but what folks in my parts of the woods would say it is....... So pretty. They can get very large and make great hedges

For the shelf, it may feel less crazy or cluttered if they all share the same colour pot. All white or all black or something. And try groupings of 3s.
Hi Harli! Beautiful plants from your mom. Sometimes it helps visually to vary the height, shapes and colors on shelves. Maybe get some short candle stands or boxes to put a few small plants on so they aren’t all on the same level? Arrange in threes with different heights? I’m not the best at that stuff either but you have so much to work with and should be able to mix and match for an attractive look.

Hi Harli, I enjoyed this video sooo much I had to watch twice. I love the wood bead trellis, pulling beads out first chance I get! You can use a smaller clear hooks or paint the nail the same color as your wall. When using a nail, nail into wall at 45 degree angle. Usually we keep a bit of it anyway for touch ups. Group items in odd numbers at different heights, this can include your favorite things not just plants. And last I have been turning all my ficus failures into bonsai “interesting tree structures” and my almost dead ferns into kokodama and I have never enjoyed failing so much 😂😊! I think I am going to watch one more time!

To sort out the hook you don't like, you could put a small (emphasis on small, like a single-plant shelf) shelf there instead with another passiflora vine, and have the beaded trellis act as a bridge between the two so they could grow toward each other
Hi Harli! Love the wooden bead swag thingy ❤️ I think you might feel like your shelf looked a little bit more intentional if you introduced more levels to it. One thing I really love to do is to incorporate my books into my plant shelves and then you can put smaller plants in the back on a stack of books, and break up the visual of plants and pots with book spines. Just one way to change the heights of things! Hope that helps!

they make clear 3M clips too, or ones that have a clear back and there's a little metal hook. might be less noticeable than the white one you used :)
as many have said, i loved this type of video as well. i stack my plants on top of bowls, vases, plant stands.. random things that can act as plant stands but also provide a bit of character to the shelf. i also add knick-knacks in between/in front, which i know very well can make accessing/cleaning the plants a bit difficult, but again it brings more character.

I move my plants a lot too! But it’s okay cause different plants need to spot light. I really like black planters too. I have one so far. Mostly my plants are in colorful pots.

There are clear 3m with a metal hook… it might work.
Every year i chop off all the leaves on my cane begonias, root the cuttings, and create a new plant with them. But then the bottom with the roots and bare stems, it always pops out new leaves and branches and looks full/lush again!!!
That’s so cute! Any care advice for begonia?? I keep them happy in my terrariums (of course lol) but just sitting in my house, they struggle
@@HarliG i live in a tropical climate but even so i am constantly watering my begonias because they absolutely cannot dry out. And they are VERY heavy feeders, or they drop all the bottom leaves and look sickly. Give them as much sun as you can and they'll put out new leaves constantly!

Maybe clear thumb tacks on either side of the adorable hanging beads. It will be more minimal than the command strip 🤞🏻
2:56 rhipsalis cereuscula, rice cactus. Pictures online can be deceiving because it starts out looking thick and chunky (like rice) but then gets to looking fine and lacy like yours. It took me years to ID this plant for a friend. We’ve always called it “Mrs Dickensons” because that was the name of the neighbor the cuttings originally came from. I think I prefer it to the real name! 😉
THANK YOU! I've had that plant for about 2 years with no ID either! I got it as a free cutting with another plant and just called it the 'joint cactus' cause it has so many sections that look like limb joints

I totally agree -it feels great to finally get plant chores done! I have this thing where I keep plants in their nursery pot and prop it up into a pretty pot (even though you can definitely still see the plastic nursery pot as well) and I just keep putting off actually potting the plant into its new home 😅 but I finally got it done today! 3 plants repotted 😊
