Sometimes crappy mental health makes us plant people neglect our plants, or you get busy and forget to check, especially if it's in a spot where it's the only plant.

So many things could contribute to a person owning a hoya like this 💛 Other commenters mentioned mental health situations and that "life happens", which are both totally true and valid answers. It could also happen due to neurodivergence or a necessary shift in life priorities (ie., your kiddos need more care than your plants for a long or short while, or your energetic capacity is low for a few weeks due to pushing yourself to show up for other people or in other ways). I hope this answer highlights diverse plant-owning perspectives and helps to answer your question!

She said everything I said after I commented because this is reality not all the plants are perfect in your house even if you get them healthy and cared for them sometimes things just go wrong it could be the soil that they were in the environment like you said AC etc. I loved it cuz it was realistic I'm so glad I found you I love it. Nothing like finding someone that you can relate to which is so hard anymore on these TH-cam streets

I came to the conclusion a long time ago that some plants just die and that's ok lol. I also try to stick it out with them through their ugly phases and try to give them what they need or try and save them through propagation. I had a Watermelon Peperomia that looked like crap for about a year because it got slightly sun burned and am just now starting to see it's pups bounce back from it! Definitely the moodiest plant in the world and it never seems to look good except in pictures but I'm holding out hope lol! 💚🌿

This video I truly appreciate because I'm kinda tired of only seeing the perfect side of new plant ownership. Like gimmie that plant that got a sunburn or that Agleonema that got over watered and it's sitting in the corner singing "Don't cry for me Argentina!" Show me the cactus the cat booted to the floor with kitty vengeance. Do a close up on that Sanseveria we all bought on clearance that leaves look like it did a tango with a weed whacker but it was only $1.50 at Lowes and who doesn't have the five years for it to make a recovery! I need the soap opera drama of the plants going thru a midlife crisis to know I'm not the only one with that Frankenstien shelf in the back by a window. The isle of the misfit toys plant section we all got in our homes. Heheehehehehehe*

Saddest thing when I have killed my plants. I enjoyed this cause it's realistic. I'm starting to name mine. If it's any help to you because it was a big help to me from overwatering and underwatering is to start a schedule with your watering. I know that sounds crazy but it's the easiest way to do it.

I'm really bad at checking for pests and I realized that my struggling plants were infested with spider mites (like literally 40 plants) spraying them with mite killer wasn't doing anything so I have just completely sprayed them off with water and switched out the soil. I feel so bad for the plants that were struggling, wish I looked at them sooner.

This is long but good info!
Hi, I had the SAME thing happen last yr w/just as many plants as you & I tried everything you have & also diatomaceous earth which was kinda the last straw for my hubby due to the mess I had ALL over the house bc I was very generous w/it, lol! Eventually hubby came home w/a very large gift card to buy new plants & told me to toss the others which literally broke me & I couldn’t do it myself but long story short it was so bad I had to toss 2-3 dozen including my prized 15 yr old $ tree!!!
Lesson I learned is to use systemic granules in ALL my plants & repeat every 2mo & spray everything regardless or how they look every few wks w/ “ Take down” & lastly all new plants I either repot asap or knock off the top inch of soil & spray every 3days for 2wks & keep them separate (as much as possible given I have SO many plants!) for said 2wks & if healthy they can join the reg population of my plants. Also I wash my hands & or use new gloves between touching each plant & change clothes or wear an apron either clean or sprayed off w/alcohol between planting new or old plants. Sounds drastic but once you loose a cpl thousand $’s & countless hrs spent on plants you may get a bit paranoid! I know this is such a LONG reply but I hope it helps!
PS: keep spraying foliage w/water regularly & try not to let them touch each other.

Love this video and love the realness you’re promoting. Thanks Harli. I recently lost my scindapsus argyraeus, the easiest dang plant I own, because I was lazy and tried out a self watering pot and root rotted her. It happens.

Thank you! I can't get a rex begonia to live longer than a month, and my tradescantias hate me. If even Harli can have plants that aren't perfect, its ok for me not to be perfect too!!

Hey Harli, I just wanted to say thank you for keeping it real and being real yourself . So many people on social media acts like everything is wonderful like .. they looks , makeup or relationships , family , kids , plants … exc. I’ve killed zz plant twice , my monsters looking droopy all the time now . But I’m gonna be keep trying . We all got straggles and why we refuse to talk about it instead of showing like everything is perfect !

Thanks for posting this helpful video. What can be learned from vids of perfect plants, ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. I really appreciate it when fellow growers post vids of their mistakes, we all make them right? Why not help people avoid them?

My Hoya compacta was struggling for over 6 mo so I moved it fr soil to PON & after a few wks it started looking SO GOOD & putting out new growth. I alway kill Peperomia’s & I learned (recently) that they need very little water & like much smaller pots than you would think/normally use for the size plant it is, so downsize the pot…maybe?
My question to you is how is your Phili Brazil so perfect? I struggle w/mine SO MUCH & keep having to chop & prop just so I don’t loose it all, but it seems sad all the time! It’s in coco peat, charcoal, perlite, a lil pumice, worm castings & switch between liquadirt & water. Thanks for any help you can give!

Other than the 3 jade plants I’ve killed in the past 2 years 🤷🏼‍♀️. My problem is my Syngonium Podophyllum. It’s throwing new leaves about twice a month, not bad for a 4” small plant, but they die just as they fully open. Instead of pretty light pink, they become very light brown, and they’re gone. Any suggestions. It is cool in here, small studio, with radiator a/c on one wall. She’s in the north window, no sun and triple pane, so no heat. Help?
