      A couple of really low maintenance Calatheas that I’ve found are the Freddie and the rufibarba. I rarely water mine maybe like once every two weeks and mine are doing great. Barely any brown crispy tips. So if you are looking for a low maintenance beautiful one, I would recommend those.

      I cater to the needs of a lot of orchids that need special attention, but calatheas are really much much worse, maybe because orchids are much slower growing and don't spit out crusty leaves like they are spamming you with poo emojis.

    "I cant get my hoyas to stop bloom" is something I never thought I'd hear anyone say, hahah.
    orchids are the most boring plant if you dont get them to bloom. when i see them in the store, i wanna buy it but i've never gotten one to bloom twice so it's no use buying them for me

      Phalaenopsis bloomed for me after I learned they need 62° F overnights, minimum. Bonus when I started setting my thermostat to that my Vanda bloomed after caring for it 5 or 6 years (first time ever since I purchased it in bloom), although with the Vanda I was also giving it warm baths everytime I watered it, about body temperature. That was it, easy, just lowered the bedtime thermostat. It is so much more fun when they bloom for you, I agree! Also, FYI it was an immediate response in my phals.....I remember they put out tiny spikes within 2 days, amazing

      @@ofhismercy109 Wait, this is interesting. Im trying to make one phalaenopsis re-bloom. So they like cold-ish temperatures at night?

    • @ofhismercy109
      @ofhismercy109 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@BuenosDiasPlants yes, this was easy to give them in Idaho, at least with the ones that were essentially waiting for those nighttime temperature drops to send up flower spikes. That is their signal. I just set the overnight thermostat to 62°F. That was enough. I would not go under 60° and not over 64°. Some of my collection spiked immediately, others didn't and I think that was because they were maybe summer bloomers. The winter bloomers spiked. This was in the autumn. The temperature was the key for me. That was really the first success I had getting them to rebloom. A friend of mine who had tons of success blooming orchids mentioned offhand to me later how she loved sleeping cold and never had her thermostat over 60° at night. I didn't learn this from her but the data and experiences coincided. Both my vanda and several phals flowered. Good luck to you!

    When I was pregnant with a boy (didn’t happen with my girl) everything made me nauseous and smells bothered me so much. I love bacon. The smell of bacon suddenly made me run to the bathroom and wretch my guts out violently. I love my husband. He doesn’t smell bad. Suddenly the smell of him turned me off to the point that I had trouble hugging him. It was truly weird, because none of this happened prior to being pregnant with my son. Pregnant with daughter? None of these issues, completely different pregnancies in every way. After the baby boy was out-I was golden. I could fry bacon and hug the man without issue 😂

      Hormones changing absolutely changes smelling. I know couples, personally know couples, who break up because once the woman started the pill, she couldn’t get turned on anymore because he no longer smelled good and in fact smelled “bad” to her. I began progesterone recently, and I’ve noticed that on random days my husband will smell bad; he’s a clean man and smells WONDERFUL, but on random days I can’t stand the smell. The other day I was near a bakery and the smell of coffee and fresh bread smelled like chemicals or burning plastic. Bread and coffee!!! Two of the most wonderful smells isn’t here world. Luckily this isn’t every day or even often.

    i’ve heard that hoyas bloom seasonally and basically it happens when they get more water after the dry season. people trying to induce blooms would want to simulate a dry season and then water more heavily after a bit, so maybe if you want to stop them blooming you should water more consistently and just keep them more hydrated! i’ve also found in my own experience that my hoyas tend to bloom when i water them after forgetting to water for a long time, so i think there’s some truth to it. good luck!

    I don't have experience with obliqua, I would love to be able to get my hands on one some day. But something you can try as an experiment is putting " crazy keiki cloning paste " its used for orchids to push out keikis but in tropical plants and other plants in general it pushes new growth from nodes as well. So my assumption is maybe with the extra nutrients and whatnot they might get bigger growth instead of the issue your having? Who knows but worth a try

    I think Orchids get a bad rep pretty often. I see them being referred to as grandma plants in the plant groups I'm in (which is true for me as well, my grandma always had them and it's the reason I got into them). I have the Peace Lily sensation, mine is in a cooler hallway and the only light comes through an east facing front door. Mine stands to the side of the door in a self watering pot and it loves it there. I think they prefer a lower light situation. I think yours would be happy where it is. My regret purchases have been my Crassula species plants as I have been left with 4 plants from 18 bought. They just got decimated by something that caused their leaves to go black and then cause the plants to collapse. It wasn't overwatering as they were only watered every 3-4 weeks. I will just keep to the Ovata varieties as they're more reliable.

    For me, so far my spider plant is not working out. It’s such a diva. Can’t figure out if it’s too much water, too little water, too much light, too little light, too many nutrients, too little. Ay ay ay.
    Not that I regret it: it was a trade. A friend had given me three loquats and three date palms, since he had too many, and I gave him a propagation from my umbrella plant tree (schefflera). I traded my neighbor, who is almost 60 and has decades of plant experience (she’s literally moving to a bigger apartment to accommodate the jungle she’s got going on). She has two, HUGE spider plants from which she has several thriving propagations. She traded me one for a loquat and a date palm…and it’s not thriving anymore 😅

I also regret my Venus fly trap because I killed it when I went out of town and couldn’t get a plantsitter :( I also regret buying airplants. I’ve killed 10 air plants now. I need to just admit air plants aren’t for me and stop buying them

    Great vid. :) Can't wait to see your new little one soon! Although I haven't had the blooming issue with my hoya, I can totally see how that would cause a mess and be overwhelming with the amount of plants you have. I wonder if it's not the actual hoya but the volume? Dunno. I regret my cacti as well. I had to put them outside on the patio because of my dog. She doesn't get into my plants but she will sniff them from time to time and she's been poked a few times on the boop poor girl. :)

    If you have plants under grow lights, especially LED's, see if the "invisible" light is more in the red or blue spectrum. I Watched a documentary on light physics and growing and I forget which one did what, but one color promotes flowering and the other promotes growth. 🤷🏽‍♀️. Worth a shot looking into maybe.

    • @janetwilliams4475
      @janetwilliams4475 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I've been doing some research on growing lights. It seems a mixture of red and blue is what is recommended. Much better than white. I can't remember which promotes more blooms, either. I want to say red...

    Harli, basically like myself you are in a different phase of your life. I have grown 99% of the plants you have showcased on your channel, the majority of them before I became a parent during my single years. Later raising kids and my career became my priority and my gardening moved outdoors, now as a disabled senior I’m more focused on terrariums and aquatic gardening as I said different phases of life, growing healthy children is a full time endeavor. Congratulations on the new baby.

    Omg. Hoyas smell so bad. When I used to go to the zoo, the nocturnal room smelled like what Hoya flowers smell like. I later got a sugar glider (animal), and if you’ve ever had one, they smell!! They smell like Hoya flowers! So I’ve deduced that Hoya flowers smell like poop…though not all of them smell and not all smell the same.

    I understand the issue with peace lilies. My toddler would not eat green vegetables but was quite happy to taste test the philodendrons. I had to put everything green in a pot up high and it was quite challenging. He's 36 years old now and seems to have survived, but I didn't have peace lilies till he outgrew the urge to snack on my house plants.

    I've given away almost as many plants as I've purchased. Very large (peace lily, rubber tree, umbrella tree) I've given to hair salon & coffee shop. Smaller plants given to plant friends. I'll never buy another calathea. Only 1 left (Freddie). Look at this hobby as entertainment. Each plant was fun in it's day. Is OK to let them go.

    I regret buying Croton’s, Fern’s & Calathea’s. They’re SO pretty to me bc I just don’t have the house for them. I’m also curious if you still hate Hoya’s now that you’ve had the baby and your smells have adjusted back to non pregnancy smells lol.
    Lastly, it doesn’t seem like you regret your peace lily or your BOP. Seems to me like you outgrown them and are adjusting to the guilt you feel that it’s time they find a new home. Appreciate the love they gave you in that season of your life & maybe start with smaller babes again. Like a jr version. Lol

    Don't buy a Watermelon Peperomia, Peperomia's in general are a pain in the ass, they need too much humidity but also want a lot of light but not too much light and hate being moved or touched. Even though I'm still hanging on to mine, every time I see one it has curled yellowing leaves even the best plant parents seem to have issues with them. I also regret buying string of pearls or honestly most "string of succulents", they just don't like living in Canada and keep dying on me and have been impossible to propagate so far. That being said, I just bought another string of pearls and it arrives in a few days. 😂 I straight up have pre-regret, it's like a bad toxic boyfriend. I think if I do enough on my end, take better care of him and better myself maybe this time he won't disappoint me and also he's just so pretty... send help! 🤣

  • @laurieparis2203
    @laurieparis2203 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    Why not divide your peace lily? You can give the divisions to friends or sell them. That way the plant will be more manageable, you can keep it in it's current pot.
    Sounds and looks like you have too many hoyas. You're not enjoying them, they're not part of your home, they're relegated to a grow tent where they are out of sight. Poor Lil hoyas! You could take cuttings and start new plants that won't flower for some time, sell the mature specimens that are producing flowers. Or maybe put the mature specimens in an area where the blooms are easy to cut off, or put them outside where it doesn't matter if they drop sap and flower heads.
    Good luck! Animals and babies call for a simplified life. 🌱🍀🌱

    I completely agree with you about the hoyas. I am newly pregnant and have over 200 hoyas in my house. My least favourite hoya bloom, Hoya thomsonii is currently blooming and I hate hate hate it!
