Cave Church in the rocks of Gellért Hill. Budapest Cave Church: a unique church carved into the rocks of Gellért Hill
The Budapest Rock Church is located at the foot of Gellért Hill at the Liberty Bridge.
The church overlooks the Gellért Bath and has a great view of the Liberty Bridge and the Danube.
The Gellért Hill Cave (Hungarian: Gellérthegyi-barlang) is part of a network of caves within Gellért Hill in Budapest, Hungary. The cave is also referred to as "Saint Ivan's Cave" (Szent Iván-barlang), regarding a hermit who lived there and is believed to have used the natural thermal water of a muddy lake next to the cave to heal the sick. It is likely that this same water fed the pools of the old Sáros fürdő ("Muddy Baths"), now called Gellért Baths.
Once this was the home of a hermetic monk, this cave now houses a small church.
After its conversion to a hospital by the NAZI army during the war, it returned to serving as a church until 1951 when the Soviet Union had it shut down. The chapel was raided by the Soviet Army, the monks arrested, and the cave sealed up until Budapest regained their freedom in 1989.
According to the legend, a hermit, St Ivan used to live in this cave, he performed miracles and healed the sick with the spring waters and mud found in the nearby water sources.
