I just replaced the starter on my 2008 Jeep Liberty and will add a few hints to make the job a bit easier. After removing the negative battery terminal and jacking up the vehicle's whole front end with two floor jacks under the front control arms leave the jacks under the control arms but support the frame with jack stands on both sides then remove the left front wheel and tire; doing so provides better access to the starter. After removing the left front tire remove the downstream O2 sensor. Removing the downstream O2 sensor will allow you to drop the front end of the front driveshaft down a good deal further and greatly increase the accessibility to the starter. Use an air impact wrench to remove the bolts attaching the front driveshaft from the flange on the rear of the front differential; in order to be able to spin the driveshaft to access all four of the flange bolts the front differential must be free to spin which in turn necessitates the use of an air impact wrench. With the driveshaft now dropped down from the differential you will be able to easily reach up and remove both the solenoid lead clip and the 13mm nut which holds down the battery lead to the solenoid. Use a 1/4" drive 13mm socket and ratchet to remove the nut. Remove the electrical connections before loosening the 15mm bolts that attach the starter to the bell housing. Use a 15MM short socket and long handled ratchet to loosen the two 15MM nuts but use an air ratchet to quickly spin the two bolts out. With the front driveshaft lowered sufficiently you will be able to easily reattach the electrical connections; with the downstream O2 sensor removed the whole job is a lot easier and if you are feeling proactive, as I often do, you can just install a new downstream O2 sensor while you're at it.
