Great video! Starter is so much easier to swap out when the arm isn't there. I also tried to be proactive and replace the crankshaft sensor while I had the starter off, but it wouldn't budge. I gave up on it, since it wasn't bad yet. I then had to use a $20 come-along from Harbor Freight to pull the front axle toward the back axle about 3/4" to get the arm to line up. Everything else worked out great. Thanks for making this!
My 04 grand cherokee the starter looks buried on drivers side . Theres like a shield underneath that looks like. It's in the way to be able to remove starter . Is this same jeep.
@@00tonytone Getting the starter off is usually easy if you have the right tools, it's getting it out that's the trick. I've got a '98 Cherokee 4.0L and an '02 4.7L. The 4.0L is a walk in the park compared to the 4.7 but I'm guessing you just have a tray under your motor...pop that off and pack a few lunches you'll be under there awhile playing Tetris to get the starter out.
Thanks! great video. I replaced my starter today, tomorrow I have to buy some strap with ratchet to put arm back to correct alignment for bolt. Then the job will be done. Great tutorial, thanks again :)
There is no need to remove the upper control arm. Put the vehicle on stands and let the suspension go to full droop and you'll have plenty of room. Just did it.
I just removed my starter today, 12-8-2022. He is right, put Jeep high on jackstands, the suspension is sitting on bottom. The 2 nuts on the solenoid were a little hard to get out, not a lot of room, so slow ratchet turns. The 2 bolts hard to get to, little room, but moved easier. The starter came out COMPLETELY by pulling forward towards front of Jeep, 2004 WJ GC also. Plenty of room to slide out, and when my new starter comes tomorrow, it should go right in through the same route.
Just so everyone that's watching this knows, there is absolutely NO REASON to remove the lateral arm. You're only creating more work for yourself. I literally just finished this job in my drive way, with a jack, jack stands, a long swivel head ratchet, a 15mm, and 13mm 3/8 drive sockets. It slides right out in between the lateral arm and the body of the vehicle.
just so logan knows i explained in the video the purpose of removing the arm was for a better shot and finished the job in my shop with a flashlight and a few hand tools
Any suggestion on how to revive a drained Altenator after leave the start switch on all night?? The Battery is good it is still have charged as all my lights at the Dashboard still turning on. It is an Optima Gel 800 CCA.
@@uglyhp8225 finally today I replaced the starter on my WJ 4.7L After 2 hours trying to unplug the starter I failed to do so. Decided to give the old starter a few hammer hits and the Jeep started. Determined to drive the WH to the mechanic I put all the tools away. My friend Paul said “no way a starter is going to defeat us”. Took all the tools out again and this time there was not going back. Took the upper arm out and the job got a bit easier. 3 hours later the job was all done. Thank you for your video!
Slept in late. Started working on the Jeep at noon. First I replaced the battery and cleaned the terminals with Coke. I went to harbor freight and bought a cheap ass pneumatic wrench and used my trusty 40 year old air compressor with more leaks than swiss cheese. The wrench didnt do shit except shoot oil out of itself when I hit the encrusted nut with it. I stuck a hand wrench on it and luckily I weigh 140 lbs but I was still stronger than the harbor freight air wrench. It was the bottom nut on the arm he removed to make the job easier. At that point I realized I didnt have a T50. Back to harbor freight. It is now 430 pm and it started to rain. I pulled off the little electric connector on the starter by hand. I called it a day after that. So I basically got one nut off and an electric connector in 4 hours. This dude in the video did this shit in 7 minutes. This video must be CGI or superimposed or some shit. Its impossible.
cordless ratchet this ones out dated so many companys make stuff that is better now dewalt and milwalkie snap on and matco your probably gonna spend between 250 and 400 for the ratchet battery and charger
I just did my 2000 WJ Starter in 15-20 minutes. ***Use a long 3/8 extension..(like 18"+) ***and a universal adapter*** with 15mm socket and a air-impact driver on the front and back 15mm bolts and you'll have this thing lose in seconds.
hmm at first it sounds like its dieseling but the squel from the starter could be it trying to engage could you maybe detail what its doing alot better or post a video of it on here or our fb
Judging from my 2004 Jeep Grand Cherokee limited V8 it looks like it will come out without jacking with the radius arm.. As anyone done this project without removing it?
I just finished replacing my starter while on stands. I couldn't get the starter out without removing the radius arm P.I.A . Removing the arm was worse than the starter itself.
Hi.. Jeep Cherokee only clicks don't Wana start I checked battery is good jumped starded and it turned on. drove around for 2 months and then it did it again this time didn't start with jumpsart Left it for 4 or 5 days and went to starded and it did without jumpstart. drove around that day next day won't start it's been 4 days know what can it be? I put new starter relay and still didn't start ....
I just bought a Jeep 05 myself and it wouldn’t start the other day I went and tappe3 on the starter the next day and it actually started should I replace he starter
For those of us who don't know all the stuff you did before and it be nice to start the video from the beginning

@@00tonytone Not sure. Do you have the 6 cylinder or the V8?

Did the same thing. But took off the o2 sensor and snuck it that way

Easy on a bridge and with an hydraulic wrench extractor..
I wish they would actually show how to get there rather than starting already there

I tried today with 1/2” ratchet and gave up… will try taking out the arm… don’t have a 3/8” set
Did you have to add that yellow connector like heated for the starter as well ? Not entirely sure what he did there
Any suggestion on how to revive a drained Altenator after leave the start switch on all night??

Whatever you do, don't take the radius arm off. It took me 10 minutes to replace the starter and 6 hours to to put the %#@*&^ back in place.
Having the same problem. How do you the fucking thing back in?! Please help. Can't get the bolt to line back up in the arm.
How did you wire in the quick connect plug? I have the same problem...

It's good to actually have tools, makes a difference. You don't need numatic anything, this guy probably wrenches all day so it's easier on him.
Such bull crap. I love how the haynes manual says easy as pie, but when u get up underneath it, its a shit show. No space to pull it out at all.
Thanks for the video...it helped me greatly !
Is that a cordless ratchet ot a cordless impact ratchet what one you using? Cost? I subscribed bro. Thanks. P.S. I don't mean the air ratchet.

Very helpful. So EZ now. Thank you.
You helped me a lot. Thank you for sharing.
Can you remove the radius arm with the jeep on ramps rather than on jack stands? Thx
no
Very easy to replace. Plenty of room. No need to remove the radius arm. Just extra work, but that's my opinion.
i did it for visibility

it can i removed the arm for the extra room but its tight if you leave it on

How do you get the radius arm back on? Mine was under a little pressure on the bolts and now it doesn't line up and won't budge! Help please!
some times you gotta use a ratchet strap to pull the axle backto line it up
Best video for real - thanks
You skipped the plug snafu
