- Replacing your BMW engine ground strap/cable is very easy on your 128i, 135i, 323i, 325i, 328i, 330i or 335i! if you are hunting no start or slow cranking issues, this strap should be on your list of items to troubleshoot, as it can cause or contribute to slow / no start issues or electrical issues on your N51/N52/N54/N55 powered E82/E88 1 Series or E9x 3 Series!

I hope you can respond as im having issues, I tried to jumpstart a month back, ever since then I’ve had all sorts of problems. I had a fuel pump code which was never there, that went away when i disconnected the battery, now im getting all sorts of dtc, transmission and no starts and car just shuts off and other times it works well. I had a guy check it out and he says its most likely a bad ground, im hoping once that gets replaced it gets fixed.
Jump starting these cars can cause a lot of problems because of all the modules. It could be a variety of things but could be your TCU module

Hey bro I had to replace my ignition lock assembly on my 335i and after I got it replaced it won’t start or make a noise when I press the push start and the radio keeps cutting on and off and have no luck figuring out what the problem is do you have any idea on what it could be ?
I have no idea, have you tried reading the codes with bimmerlink or ista? Mhd won’t give you all the codes, just engine ones
Hey, your power relay 9, the fuse box in the glove compartment . Any click or air sound computer sound from the engine ?not enough voltage to the front.
Do I have to take off the entire engine shield all the way to the back of the car or something. I have a 07 bmw 328i...will mine be the same process?
It’s the exact same process as in the video. You have to remove the engine shield, but not the transmission shield. There’s no room to get your hand in there without removing it
Is it easier to get to the cable from the front of the car or the driver side. I was looking at your video and am having trouble finding the cable on my e90 328i.@@AshwinLB
the ground strap is on the driver side so it’s easiest to access it if you enter from the front or passenger side
Can you do this without jacking up the car?
There might be a way but it would take 10x longer because of all the stuff in the way. So I’d say no it’s not possible without jacking up
are the e92 and e93 ground straps the same ? i have a 2009 e93 but can't find a strap for the cabriolet model so should i just get a e92 one ?
It’s the same for all inline-6 models (except 335d since that’s not an ng6 engine)

I’m not sure if the convertibles have extra ground straps but it’s the only one on e82

no you don’t have to take off your wheels to get in there

you do have to take the belly pan off all the way cause the bolts are kinda at a weird angle

@@AshwinLB just following up for anyone else reading this, I was able to remove the entire intake down to the throttle body. I was able to reach the top nut, and installed the top of the new cable. Put car on jacks, and only removed the corner of the panel closest to the seem and without going all the way under the car you can feel the cable and nut. Super easy to get to. My jack wasn’t low enough so had to buy mini ramps and jack it up and put them on the ramps just to be able to get underneath the center front jack point, than I could get jack stands beneath it. Splurge for the low pro jack!
@diyengineerUSA definitely another great way to go about it. I personally have a cordless ratchet so it’s much faster to just remove the whole splash shield and do the entire job from the bottom

I have a QUESTION AND I REALLY HOPE U SEE THIS!
I have x6 35i xdrive
And I drove it the store one day and when i came out to leave it did a weak long crank, but cranked, i came home parked it and tried to restart it, one click so i take the key out n in bk n forth several times and hit start button around 6-7 times itll crank i changed starter, checked battery ran codes no misfire its just sayin starter obviously but i just replaced and it’s intermittently cranking, ive checked EVERYTHING what would cause an intermittent startinh issue im at my wits in and its my only car! What could be happening 😢
It honestly could be the ground cable! Otherwise could be the alternator or the voltage regulator that mounts on the alternator

No you can probably replace it with a universal ground strap that’s uninsulated from Amazon but not just a copper wire

No the DDE has its own ground

Sorry I completely forgot to check the DME ground for you. Are you getting any codes for it? Regarding putting grease on the ground strap, I would not recommend it
is the top nut a 13 mm too because I can't see how you got the damn thing off?
yeah they’re both 13mm but it’s a bolt on top instead of a nut

Hi, my E90 2008 320d sometimes when i drive it and switch it off after driving for a long or short distance especially when the sun is too hot it won't crank or start, but other things works perfectly, it will only start after 20 to 30 minutes . So what might be the problem?
No idea, maybe the battery is overheating

HOPING YOU SEE THIS!!! so I have a 325i, my car was working good all of a sudden doesn’t turn on ! lights on dash pop up but no crank , break paddle is hard, I replace my big 30 amp, my black relay, and a few 5 amp fues and the car turns on, next day doesn’t turn on again, autozone person said I might have oil on my ground strap does that sound like symptoms?

Ground strap is definitely a possibility because it sounds like the whole car is getting power except the starter which wouldn’t get power if the ground strap was corroded
@@AshwinLB the problem is the ground strap was a 7-8/10 it wasnt green rusted or nth it did seem lil yet moist lil bit but I ordered a new one and it’ll be here tmr ! If it’s not that u think it can be key battery ??
@@AshwinLB but yeaaa everything gets power like light are on dash has lights doors lock unlock just break paddle is hard but when entering the car it doesn’t give the key single no more unless u put it in the push start ignition then it reads it but like 2 weeks ago as soon as u enter the car it’ll make all typs of Beamer noises like bling bling. Bling telling u the key is in the car now it doesn’t that’s why I’m thinking it can be part of it
If you have comfort access and you insert the key into the slot, the car should still start, doesn’t matter if the battery is dead. You can try changing the battery though but I don’t think it would fix your no-start issue
Did you need to disconnect the battery for this?
It’s recommended when doing any bmw electrical stuff

question i just did a new head and head gasket on my engine i put it back in my car, now the car wont start it turns over when i engage the starter but it just spins the engine it doesnt seem to want to start. i connected mhd wire adapter to the obd2 port and it says mhd could not communicate with dme. do you think a bad ground will cause it to crank but not start and have no communication with the dme?
If the engine is cranking, it means the starter is working so this ground isn’t faulty. I’m not sure what it could be but double check that all your wiring is good for ignition system and fueling
@@AshwinLB i have all the wires connected, i cant even check codes cause i cant connect to the dme. my friend said it might be a dead battery so i changed it and still nothing, i have fuel going to the injectors and i have spark, timing is done correctly, i used starting fluid and it ran for like 5 seconds and died. sooo idk lol might jusst ls swap it n54 are annoying lol

@@aimized1460 i asked around in some forums some guy said that the dme and cas went out of sync i just have to connect it to INPA and resync them for now the car just sits cause i dont know anyone with the inpa program lol
Do you have a picture of where exactly you are talking about?
No but it’s on the engine mount arm, can’t really get a camera on it. Just follow the ground strap

My bmw not starting up transmission ground cable is rusted and transmission malfunction code
If I remember correctly, the transmission doesn’t have a ground strap. It shares the same one with the engine
