    Summary (timestamps are included in the description):
    1. Don't ask rhetorical questions- waste of words, deflects focus of essay away from you.
    2. Don't use dialogue- disrupts flow, sounds cheap. Just don't use quotes in general.
    3. No Thanksgiving topics like religion, politics, etc. App readers might not share same sentiments. BUT talking about religion-related topics like a church community isn't necessarily a bad thing.
    4. DONT WRITE ABT THE PANDEMIC, especially if it's for self-reflection. Will be sooooo overused, and there are many people who probably have it worse. It's also such a short period of time, there are better things you can talk about.
    5. Don't talk only about stuff you're gonna do in the future. Don't elaborate so much on your negative traits especially if there's no proof you change. They're looking for how you will contribute to the school, and it will likely reflect poorly on you.
    6. Don't use false misconceptions, i.e. 'contrary to popular belief' and then talk about something no one actually believes. It just sounds dumb.
    (Also, don't refer to the reader as 'you')

    For essays about pandemic, i think common app has a seperate section for how pandemic impacted you. Maybe it's a good idea to write about the experience in that section instead of in the common app so u don't repeat urself. :))

    • @gemmagoette9713
      @gemmagoette9713 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      yeah! also at the majority of college info sessions about applications they're mentioning that they already know people will be writing about the pandemic, and don't wanna hear about it (unless its in the designated section - which is optional, but a good place to share any details about how its impacted your life, so the normal essay can be left for non pandemic info)

    Thank you so so much for this video!!!! Really, really helpful. Quick question though, I was thinking about discussing my OCD (saying how despite the daily struggle I'm able to use it in a good way/it's like a superpower) and I was going to open up with an intro paragraph with just my thoughts in a daily basis. This would be basically all quotes which is my concern, but it would really reflect on how much it impact me day to day. Would this be a bad idea? Fyi, this is just an alternative topic I was thinking about writing.

      just dont do it? jk lollll. honestly im not entirely sure either but i think a lot of the times, the massive use of "i" comes from writing the essay in a way where you soley focus on what happened in a bullet-point-timeline-y way if that makes sense lol. i think when you dive deeper into the context of the situations you talk about and the emotions and thoughts involved, the "i"'s diminished for me. sorry if that makes no sense at all loll

  • @as.829
    @as.829 3 ปีที่แล้ว +10

    I don’t think my essay is too cliche, but I think it’s boring and comes across as a little forced, if that makes sense. :( I mean it’s not that I think my life is boring, but most “interesting” things about my life won’t really tell an AO anything of substance about me (or at least I’m not sure how to write in a way that they will). I’m writing an essay about a hobby of mine+some things I do that convey a few character traits that I feel like I’ve spent time working on and am proud of. But I don’t want to bore my reader or have them roll their eyes haha. I’ve been doing drafts for nearly two months now and while my last draft is better that the first, it’s still frustrating when my essay sounds either too stale or like it’s trying too hard :/
    To end on a positive note though, we all still have time to edit our essays or even come up with new ideas! I’m hopeful I can have a decent essay by November. Good luck to everyone else working on their essays right now!!

    Hi! I just have a quick question about my personal statement (UK)
    If i’ve been able to link the pandemic to one of my subjects, do you think it’s okay to mention the pandemic in this case? (only very briefly) =
    I’m applying for a design university course and in my current design course have created a promotion pamphlet for an independent business. I have mentioned in my essay that i have the ability to create designs relevant to current situations, this one specifically being how the pandemic has affected local and independent businesses economically, and that promotion for the less well known businesses may be useful.
    Your tips are so so helpful! :)

    ugh it boils my bones when rich upper-class kids talk about the pandemic in their essay like "oh online classes are tiring" "being stuck with my family is so annoying" "i had to cancel all these events" and framing that like a life-changing time to reflect and grow and make sacrifices when people have had a hell of a lot worse. you gotta frame and explain that real good to avoid sounding super spoiled and like you were apparently just a terrible person before two months of minor inconveniences made that change.

    hey, I was wondering about the thing you said about "thanksgiving topics". I'm gonna be a political science major so a few of my sentences in my essay pertain to how I found my passion for politics. I don't think what I said was really controversial or anything, but should I still delete these sentences??

      i think its totally okay to talk about your interest in politics. i just dont like it when it sounds like people are trying to push a certain view point to the reader

    I am planning to use a single line of dialogue as the first sentence of my essay. It serves as sort of hook/attention grabber.
    It goes something like this:
    "Do you know how gay you are?" I looked up to see the student who had uttered these words....
    Do you think the quotation fits in this scenario?
    I also happen to be an aspiring screenwriter which I think is funny because in the video you say something like "don't use dialogue because you're probably not a screenwriter."

    So far I have written my essay partly on the pandemic, however I focus on designing and prototyping a ventilator in my engineering class rather than sitting at home and self reflecting (I said partly because I also focus on playing guitar, a hobby of mine, and connect the two topics). I was wondering if you’d still consider this to be risky since it is pandemic related, or if it is unique enough to be an exception. Thanks!

    • @haleykang8156
      @haleykang8156  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      i think thats a great thing to talk about but i wouldnt make that the sole topic of the essay. i would also talk about more previous moments too since it would show you had a passion for engineering before the pandemic.

    2.05 Hi! I'm an international student who wants to study in the States. I wrote my essay but I don't have anyone around me to read my essay and lead me (of course I have an English teacher but she doesn't know about these college stuff so) How can I find someone to read my essay and lead me about it?

    I have finished three drafts of my essay and I am still unhappy 😔 hopefully this fourth attempt
    But what I am confused about is if the essay can be about for example, how I came to like and create art over the years, rather than one specific moment of me creating an artwork?

    • @haleykang8156
      @haleykang8156  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      you definitely can talk about your journey as a whole! i just think that adding in a few key moments in this "journey" is crucial to really show your self growth and make the essay personal rather than a really general statement that can apply to thousands of other people

    Hi Professor Kang!
    You’re videos are so helpful! Thank you for investing your time into them! I was wondering if you’d give me some advice on the common app actives section. I was on the Student Council for my entire high school “life“. Should I group it into 1 activity? I had a different position each year and achieved a lot in each position so it’s a lot to cram into 150 characters😬 Please advise! Thanks!

      @rebeccafisher6213 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Aw yuck. Reading that over it sounds super prideful/stuck up. Sorry! When I say "achieved a lot" I mean like 1-2 things every year (which after writing descriptions comes out to be more than 150 characters)
