    Luciano would run past capybaras every day, but he never interacted with them until one of them took shelter from the rain under his umbrella. Ever since then, the two have been best friends. Luciano visits Capi (that's her name) and gives her all scratches she asks for. But everything when Capi's babies arrived...

      The capybara are aloparents. They each babysit and look after each other's kids, 24/7. Thats why the mom just let her kids run off. She actually *expects* Luciano to help keep an eye on the kids. He made a buddy, and the capy just outsourced her babysitting. 😋

      Lol! That's gross but good to know! Anyone with Guinea Pigs could certainly believe it (that they poop a lot). I wonder if the mud kind of acts like a 'sunscreen' for them, as it does with a lot of other species (which is why they roll in it, like Hippos, for example).

      I live near a place with a lot of them and we mostly consider them chill neighbors, though there are some ranches that keep them. They are harmless, and many of them even friendly. If you are, say, sitting with friends in a park, it's likely that a capy will get curious and come close, and they just hang out for a while. It's lovely to watch them living their best life.

      @@jumboJetPilot They really are. I think the 'perpetually grumpy' ones are just as fun as the more 'playful/cuddly' ones too. I have one little Grump (who tolerates pets for treats), & his buddy has exactly the nature of a Capybara (a lap pig that loves attention). We've had almost every breed at some point. We even had one figure out that he could push his back up & drag his pigloo (plastic igloo) around with him like a turtle. 😆

    • @jumboJetPilot
      @jumboJetPilot ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@KyrieChii I love the grumpy ones too! I had a father/son duo and the father was this sweet, gentle teddy bear who would start purring softly at the mere sight of my hand approaching to pet him. His son was always trying to be the alpha, always trying to prove a point, but always kept me amused in the process. And the son was smart too! He did the same thing with pigloos. He also learned how to open the latch of their travel cage when he wanted out, among other mischief that he loved to get into. I remember the first time I plumped a bell pepper into their cage. Normally I would have sliced it up but I wanted to see Peanut tackle the challenge. The three of them looked at that pepper and said “OMG, that looks delicious, but how do we eat it?!?” Pumpkin and Mocha gave up trying after a couple of minutes. But Peanut figured out that he could roll the pepper into the corner, pin it there, and then put enough pressure on it to take a bite without it rolling away. The first sound of Peanut taking that first bite sent the other two running to join him! That was among the many things that Peanut figured out over the years; he could trick me instead of the reverse. When he wanted more food he’d try to hide their existing food from me to make me think that they needed more. He was ornery!
      That same grumpy one, Peanut, did have one adorable trait though - every time I’d pick him up he’d make a beeline for my right shoulder, climb up there, turn around, and face the same direction as me. He always wanted to be my right hand man!

    • @KyrieChii
      @KyrieChii ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@jumboJetPilot Lol! Those stories are wonderful. Maybe son thought he could steer if he acted like a parrot 😆My current Grump is similar to the 'son' in your story, he's too smart for his own good, stubborn & ornery/mischeivious. I just had to have him when I spotted him at the Petco... He was smaller than some of his siblings, & decided the best way to get his turn at the food bowl was to sit in it, on top of the food so only he could get to it.
      Back when my brother & I were teens, we each had 2 & my Mom had 1, so when we let them run around on the floor (with those little gate things) I had a whole herd of furry potatoes following me around. I had 2 brothers at one point that must have 'imprinted' on me (they were teeny weenies when we got them) & they'd follow me around, want to be on my bed with me all the time, & I could put my hands out flat & they'd walk up my arms. People who don't experience them don't realize how smart & emotional/social they really are, or that they have as many unique personalities as a dog or cat would.
      Oh course I'm of the opinion that all animals are a gift that makes life a more enjoyable experience. The _only_ downside is their relatively short lifespan (I think the oldest we ever had reached 8, but that sadly wasn't the average). No matter how many you've had, it never gets easier to lose them. It's so nice to share these stories. 😊

    It's not that capybaras aren't attentive parents per se. In their herds they do a sort of communal parenting. Since Luciano was accepted as part of the herd, Capi's expectation was that he would also watch after her kids so if he was around she would know it was safe to do her own thing for a while, just like if another capybara was there to watch them. Congratulations Luciano, you're a capybara now.

    10/2023....I love this video and revisit it often. It makes me so happy to see these unique rodents. I have other videos of the few people who have been able to adopt these critters. One couple in the USA, in Texas, has a pair. They let them in their house, they sit on the furniture. One of the males will even wear a pair of the "human's" eyewear. Just for chuckles. They look so smart wearing glasses. They have a medium sized kiddie pool, for the Capybaras to swim, & bath. They are so peaceable. Docile too, I suspect. I think they prefer warm climates, and I doubt many can even consider adopting them.

    From movies like "The Princess Bride" one might have the impression a rodent of unusual size would be vicious. But they have no natural enemies, they don't need to be violent.

    Whom Can We Trust If No One Is Trustworthy?
    One of my favorite quips from Mark Twain’s The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is when Tom is defined as “a glittering hero…the pet of the old, the envy of the young,” and there were “some that believed that he would be President, yet, if he escaped hanging.” With these few words, Twain captured the essence of leadership in our world. Those who get to the top are the fiercest, most determined, and most ruthless. Today, the latter quality has become so intense that we can no longer believe our leaders, and certainly not trust them to have our best interest in mind.
    I am not accusing any leader in particular, or even leaders as a whole. It is simply that in an egoistic world, where people vie to topple one another on their way to the top, the one at the top is clearly the one who trampled over and knocked down more people than anyone else. Concisely, to get to the top in an egoistic world you have to be the biggest egoist.
    So how do we know whom to trust? We don’t know and we cannot know. All we know is that we are in the dark.
    In a culture of unhinged selfishness, any conspiracy theory seems reasonable, while truth is nowhere to be found. When every person who says or writes something is trying to promote some hidden agenda, you have no way of knowing who is right, what really happened, or if anything happened at all.
    The only way to get some clarity in the news and goodwill from our leaders is to say “Enough!” to our current system and build something entirely independent. The guiding principle of such a system should be “information only,” no commentary. Commentary means that information has already been skewed. Information means saying only what happened, as much as possible, not why, and not who is to blame and who we should praise.
    Concurrently, we must begin a comprehensive process of self-teaching. We have to know not only what is happening, but why we skew and distort everything. In other words, we have to know about human nature and how it inherently presents matters according to its own subjective view, which caters to one’s own interest. To “clear” ourselves from that deformity, we must learn how to rise above our personal interest and develop an equally favorable attitude toward others. This is our only guarantee that our interpretation of things will be even and correct.
    Once we achieve such an attitude, we will discover that the bad things we see in our world reflect our own, internal wickedness. Our ill-will toward others creates a world where ill-will governs, and so the world is filled with wickedness and cruelty. Therefore, all we need in order to create positive leadership-and to generally eliminate ill-will from the world-is to generate goodwill within us. When we nurture goodwill toward others, we will fill the world with goodwill. As a result, the world will fill with kindness and compassion. By changing ourselves, we will create a world that is opposite from the world we have created through our desires to govern, patronize, and often destroy other people.
