A little tip when buying MS 1959-1966 canadian halves is to look at the shoulder of the lion and the thigh of the unicorn. If it's a good strike they will be higher than the rim. You can easily tell in a 2×2 because it'll be pushing on the window creating little bumps in the film. Also on any MS silver canadian half, new or old style, look at the chain around the unicorn. That's a good indicator of how well struck it is. They can look real blobby or really sharp where you can see each link clearly. Sometimes on the old style the dies get too polished and the you can lose elements of the relief like the 1950 No design, or that chain I was talking about will look like it's sinking into the field. Overall I really enjoyed this one. I want one of those 1937 $20s for myself. You got some great deals!
Those are some great tips for judging the strike on these coins. This is new information for me, and something I'll keep in mind, for sure! I appreciate you sharing these tips!
@@CADRollHunter No worries. That '63 you had looked frosty. The 60s halves get some great lustre going. One of my favourite coins! Also that $2 sure was a beater... BUT the portrait somehow avoided detrimental creasing. A choice note in the grade. And they're scarce as heck. I've only ever found one at a bank and it was torn up and beat more than that. I managed to get $5 for it LOL. love your videos. You're always sharing cool stuff.
@@TheWinstonDouble I was happy to pick up some great stuff there, for sure! I'd love to get my hands on a nicer $2, but I'm happy to have that as a filler in the collection until then!
@@CADRollHunter I know, the $2 are stupid expensive in high grade. For the price you paid you got a nice one. Good ink on the portrait, not any big distractions. It kind of annoys me that the $2DHs are so pricey because they're the best looking ones. The 5s are a close second, but I'm not a fan of a lot of the other notes either for the colour or the scrollwork around the border. And the modified portrait takes the life out of it. The eyes are sorta more dead, the ink isn't as vibrant.
Really nice. A coin really is what the buyer wants to pay to have it. And the vendors you dealt with are extremely fair. Makes it enjoyable for a new person to afford some of these great items. Really nice. I like the quarter finds personally.
I'd say you got some good deals. Just being able to find some coins or currency to upgrade or fill missing dates/varieties in one's collection is a big win. Feels satisfying. my favorites were the 5 Cents fish scales. Probably because those are next in my collection to concentrate on. I was anxious to see what dates were in the KGV One Cent tube. No show stoppers but always a treat to inspect the 1929's for high 9 variety. I have found four so far. Like to see upgrades to your album. Congrats.
I love the Canadian half dollar coins from the 40’s and 50’s, the design is gorgeous and they tone up beautifully. For me I collect them for silver content (stacking) rather than numismatic value. Nice pickups, the bills are cool.
I remember going to the post office on April 13 with my grandfather to get a pile of the $2 bills cancelled in Celoron, NY. I got my devil's face $1 by accident. I bought a bunch of old Canadian coins from a friend and the dollar was in the mix. I didn't know it was a devil's face until I got home and thought to look it up. I paid US$1 for it.
Always a pleasure to see your new acquisitions. Agree with you for almost all of your grading, except for the 50 cents 1909, but hey, at 10$ I'll sure jump on it everyday. Thank you for showing ❤
Those are some great pickups, I really nice those devils face notes! I’m studying abroad in the Uk and here, Canadian coins are incredibly cheap. You can get silver 5 cent pieces in decent condition for around 50 pence (0.70 Cad), so I’m just trying to get as many as I can become I fly back to Canada haha
Wow! Great deal on those silver 5 cent pieces! Some of those dates can be hard to come by and worth a fair bit. Perhaps in the UK, they're not too concerned about the Canadian coins. I hope you find some good ones!
Your Canadian coins are so much nicer than our coins here in the 🇺🇲. Those are beautiful coins and currency. It's unfortunate people write on their paper money 💰. Thanks for a great video.
The old stuff for sure. We have you beat there. But as of lately since our steel plated junk, I think it's switched. I can't stand the super brilliant look to them. It makes them feel like chuck e cheese tokens. There's no lustre to them, the relief is flat. They're not even sculpted some of them. It's just lines. Look at the Oscar peterson loonie. His jacket is just a line sketch. No 3D sculpture to it.
Amazing deals, I only wish more sellers on coin shows accepted trades! Last time I was at one I bought a variety (5 złotych 1959 die clash) for below one tenth of its market value (too bad it means it won't join my collection... long story) and got another (British penny 1916 with the recessed ear)... for free. I still want to trade it and give something back to the seller the next time around :)
Hello@James there is a coin show on the 28 th of April in Truro Nova Scotia so Marty and myself could be attending Truro is only just under 1 hours drive from Halifax
I would *LOVE* to come out your way and especially to meet both of you in person! I don't think it will work in my schedule (I just flew back from Mexico yesterday) - I'll have a hard time getting the time off!
There were pleny of NFLD coins there, but I guess I missed out on those ones! I didn't see any NFLD gold at the show (lots of great Canadian $5 and $10 gold - very tempting!). But, there was a $2 NFLD at November's auction at the Waterloo Coin Society. Someone got a bargain!
What books are you using to house your coins. I am assuming you are using Lighthouse booksand if so how would you compare these to a Dansco or a Whitman book of the same caliber or coin in a 2x2 in pages protect your coin better?
Most of my collection is in 2x2 flips in binders. I have a few Lighthouse albums for nickels, quarters, and pennies for coin roll hunts on the channel, plus my new Whitman penny album for US cents. They're all great.
@@AustynKennedy33 It's definitely worth the drive from Guelph. I should be there for the May meeting. There are several dealers who sell coins, as well, and we have a 50 lot auction, as well. If you do come out, please come up and say hello!
Most of the modern books/flips should be made with archival quality materials that shouldn't damage the coins. However, toning might still occur over time if they're not particularly airtight - which might happen in any storage solutions. Thankfully, natural toning isn't viewed nearly as negatively as it used to be. Some collectors quite like it!
Sweet pickups and some great deals gotta love getting silver at melt and under
Definitely!
coin shows are so fun to go to
Wow, great deals. I need just about all of those for my collection too! 👍👍
I was happy to fill some holes in my collection!

will the books damage silver BU coins ie tone after long periods of time sitting in albums
