    I have a sport in mint green and yeah the plastic is soft. It's very comfy to hold though, so I decided the scratches might be worth the nice texture. Mine's in medium and works great, but one thing I've noticed is people who like M or B tend to like these pens a lot more than the F or EF crowd do. I'm starting to suspect their larger nibs are simply more reliable.

      I think that it is just... quality control? For example, I have had a perfect F nib in a black Sport, but my new Sport (fox hehe)'s fine nib tends to skip...
      But you are right. The Kaweco EF nibs have more chances to be... less perfect. :)

    I've never had luck with the "just squeeze the cartridge" school of nib inking. Most times when I did it, I needed to let the feed settle for a few weeks then the pens involved began writing without problems.

    Great video, i have a few Kaweco pens i've been using, i really love writing with them, especially the brass ones, all of them are in F and EF nibs, most of them write smoothly straight from the box, but i had one with inkflow issues, which is a bit annoying, but im glad that it could be fixed with a few adjustment and cleaning

    Good day, I feel your frustration. I had a similar issue with my Kaweco Sport (EF). It would write for a little bit and then the ink flow would lessen then stop. I managed to get the problem fixed by getting a medium nib. I placed the new nib in and was still having issues with ink flow again. I then used a syringe with distilled water and washed the new nib, feed and grip housing. FINALLY it writes without any issues. I hope this helps😊

    My first fountain pen was a Kaweco Skyline Sport (EF) and the feed could not keep up. Halfway through an A5 size page it would start writing very dry, but never stop completely. My next Kaweco was a Liliput (EF) and it writes very dry and skips a lot. My most recent Kaweco is an AL Sport (M) and it writes great. I bought some replacement nibs in B, BB and 14k F and they all write beautifully, so I use them in my Liliput.

      Wow! You didn't give up! Glad you found a solution. Though I hope Kaweco can get their quality control act together and make pens you know will write correctly right out of the box.

    I got a Kaweco Sport F a few months ago and it was very, very dry and also had flow issues. Adjusting de nib I got it to write a bit wetter, but I have been unable to completely solve the flow problem. When cleaning it I noticed that the feed had very little ink: probably the problem is that it only takes the ink directly from the cartridge to the nib and it is unable to store any additional ink in it as it should. Therefore any change in the direct flow from the cartridge is immediately noticed when writing on paper. Also the feed looked irregular in the top (cartridge) area with the channel a bit blocked. I fixed it with a razor, which did not completely solve the problem. But there is still more. The cartridge is not held securely in place (not even the Kaweco branded cartridges), so I had to add a spring inside the body to avoid the risk of it getting loose: another known issue of these pens, if you look for it. I really love the format and design of the Sport and its compactness, but so many flaws and cheap materials for that price (32€ pen with horrible clip) are unacceptable. IMO It is way overpriced.

    • @DowntheBreatherHole
      @DowntheBreatherHole  19 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Yeah, I feel the same way. A while ago, a friend of mine told me about the loose cartridge thing, and ever since then it has been driving me crazy. Some cartridges fit snugly, but most don't. I love the design of the Kaweco Sport, but the execution and quality control just aren't there, in my opinion.

    From reading the comments, it does not seem that your experience is very unusual. I have a Liliput and Classic Sport, with stainless steel (M) and gold nib (M), respectively. I have given up on making the nib on the Liliput work. It works flawlessly for half-a-page and then decides to stop. Something about the feed on it did not seem to sit well with my writing style, but it is hard for me to imagine anyone bearing through the inconsistent flow issues with it. I had a similar issue with the Classic Sport with the gold nib initially as well, but I had the nibmeister from whom I purchased the pen correct the issue of the inconsistent flow for me. I have also converted my Classic Sport to an eyedropper because the converter is trash. Will I buy another one? Not with these types of QC issues.

      It is very interesting to see so many having similar problems. I was open to buying another Kaweco Sport, but after all of these comments, I think I'll focus my pen hobby elsewhere.

    Hi Brian. Sorry to hear of your disappointing experience with a Kaweco pen. I just own one Kaweco Sport Classic, although I do have a couple of vintage Kaweco's as well. Mine is fitted with the F nib. This pen has grown on me. Initially I didn't like the nib too much. I didn't have the problems you had with your pen. Mine wrote OK but it felt a bit stiff (like a nail) and felt scratchy. I persevered with it and the nib got better in a short time. The nib is softer with some line variation and feels a lot smoother. This "breaking in period" only took a couple of weeks. I am really happy with the pen. As mine is the Classic it is the least expensive of the Sport range. I hope you give Kaweco another chance. You may also be aware that Kaweco have introduced a range of premium nibs which could be a worthwhile upgrade over the standard supplied nib. Oh, and by the way, I don't get the squeaky threads either. I just listened to mine and silky smooth.

    • @DowntheBreatherHole
      @DowntheBreatherHole  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks David. I appreciate your comment. The threads on mine broke in fine during the week or so that I used it. I have noticed that some of my pens write better after a break-in period, but this one was unfortunately a dud I think. But based on your experience, I may have to try again. I think the design is brilliant.

    So so sorry to hear about the problems with your plastic Kaweco Sport. I do NOT have their Sport. But I DO have two of their AL Sports. One is the raw aluminum shiny AL Sport. The other is their AL Sport in matte Black. They both write beautifully, buttery smooth. One is a Fine and one is a Medium. I prefer Mediums so I have been using that one more. And I recently gifted myself with a Kaweco 1.1 mm stub nib for them. Instantly fell in love with the pens all over again. I do notice sometimes the pen will get ink starved. For those situations, I clean out the whole feed/nib/section assembly and start fresh. I use their tiny converter filled with Platinum carbon black ink. You’ve convinced me that aesthetically speaking, I will probably NOT go for one of their basic plastic Sports. I was hoping to get one and eyedropper it. But, now not likely. Thanks for the feedback AND the poetry recommendation!

    I'm new to fountain pens and I appreciate your pen reviews, Brian. I'd never have known about the soft plastic until I went to use it. I'm really in an evaluation stage with fountain pens, generally, to see if they are suitable for me. If I had purchased one of these, and it did the same thing as yours, I would have called it quits on any further use of fountain pens, instead returning to my preferred writing stick - mechanical pencils, more specifically, 2mm drafting pencils.

      @@DowntheBreatherHole Hello Brian, that was a quick reply !! I don't know if I mentioned it earlier in another post, but I'm left handed and pencils are perfect for the resistance they provide for writing. Ballpoints and rollerballs are too easy and I lose control. With this in mind, I decided to try fountain pens after decades of resistance. I no longer care about smudging my writing. I now regard it as part of my writing. It's what happens when as a left handed person, you push the pen, rather than drag it. I'm just watching your second Kaweco Sport video.

    Your video popped up as I was wrapping an AL Sport gift for a family member we loves them. I don’t have one myself (for the reasons you mentioned) but after holding this one, it makes me reconsider. The grip seemed very comfortable for me. Pretty sure the gift recipient works on his own nibs, except the most expensive ones, so if there is an issue maybe he can fix or just exchange. Glad Gold Spot worked with you to your satisfaction.

    My first Kaweco Sport I had to smooth the medium nib a lot before it would stop the intermittent writing/skipping. That first Sport nib I had had baby's bottom.
    My second one I'm working thru a double broad nib issue...
    I love these pens (style, look posting, Eyedropper capacity) but I won't take any chance again on their nibs until I can be sure I can have a great smooth nib and flow. So many people I know have super excellent experiences so it's disappointing.

    I think the Lamy Vista should do away with the window, it's already a clear demonstrator so the window is pointless, and that cutout window hinders the pen's ink capacity since it can't be eyedroppe'd

    It could be that your particular pen was a "lemon"? I don't have this model but had been eyeing the all aluminum one in violet, but just haven't jumped on it yet. I had been refraining from doing so because there are other pens I am interested in which cost quite a bit more. I do know that people do tend to love these sports pens and some have more than one. (I can't imagine having more than one.) The plastic ones like yours aren't very expensive- I think these sell for about $25.00 give or take a couple. It's still good money but I generally would not expect it to perform at the same level as a more expensive pen would. I am just not sure the quality control is going to be as stringent for this as it would be for something they are going to charge more for.

    • @DowntheBreatherHole
      @DowntheBreatherHole  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I get that, though I have a friend who had trouble with his more expensive AL Sport. The plastic sports start at $25, but some editions cost more. Mine was $27, about the cost of my TWSBI Swipe, which has been a great pen for me. Entry level pens should still have high quality control, IMO. Every once in a while it's normal to get a dud, but lots of people struggle with these Sports, apparently. Then again, a lot of people love them.

    Hi everyone! I’m new to fountain pens, but could it be different for different writing “speeds”? Some write faster, some slower….just curious and would like opinions ☺️

    • @DowntheBreatherHole
      @DowntheBreatherHole  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That's a good question, but speed shouldn't affect a pen's ability to write. A lot if pen reviewers actually test "fast writing" and I don't recall seeing any pens that didn't pass that test. Of course, if you tried to write really, really ridiculously fast, you might run into problems, but normal writing speeds, whether fast or slow, shouldn't affect the writing experience.
