    Update for May 2021:
    Dear friends and our youtube channel followers, a lot of water has flown under the bridge since this last video and if you watched the video carefully i constantly express how this is a constant learning process and how i keep on improving on my skills and technique as i learn more about myself and the process of grafting. I have made a few changes with time, and this is because we all want to be environmentally friendly and frugal so we use only the essential products, spending least amount of money, and some changes based on our microclimate here in South Florida.
    1. First change was to switch from electric tape to reusable clothespins to hold the union together. Found out that electric tape makes a wet, humid environment because it does not allow the tissue to breathe. Plus, clothespins can be re-used again so they are more environmentally friendly compared to electric tape which is a one time use. I use clothespin over the layer of buddy tape which is wrapped securely over the union. I use 3-4 clothespins stacking one over another.
    2. Second change is about the plastic cover on top. I do not do this in drier months like April, May, October, November. But in June, July and August it is very rainy here in South Florida and i need to protect union from rain water seepage. I remove the plastic cover after 3 weeks, esp. after the scion starts to push. The plastic cover can be reused and you can use any plastic that came with your groceries instead of discarding it, and recycle it in special plastic recyclers after (like the bins in Home Depot or Publix). Plastic cover does not burn the scion, many people showed concern but it doesn't work this way even in the hottest months if you leave a small opening at the bottom for air circulation, so no greenhouse effect.
    3. I tried putting tree grafting wax to cover the union. It seems to work great for arid climates but here in Florida it was a disaster :)

    In this video, i want to show you 5 mistakes i made while learning how to graft. I watched tons of youtube videos on grafting and felt like i was doing all the steps correctly, using all the equipments as suggested by the grafting gurus but still had only 5-10% takes on my grafts. Then i started experimenting and changing small subtle things in my grafting and started to see my takes go up to 50%, and then to 70- 80%. So I decided to share my experience with you guys, the 5 crucial mistakes i made and how i corrected them to get better success rates. It helped me get out of the failure frustration that a beginner grafter gets, and inspiration to get going. Once someone is adept at grafting, every technique and grafting process seems to work well, and these 5 mistakes will not mean much, so this video is not intended for the grafting pros. It is intended to inspire new grafters to experiment with their technique, to see what works for them and in their specific climate/growing zone, as every place and everyone's technique is unique, and one will eventually have their own technique that works.

    I thank you so much for the grafting detail mistakes. I'm beginner 101. I watch several grafting technique on line and feel very confidence grafting the whip n tongue, clefting and approaching style. I did 15 grafting fruit trees into 4 trees using electrical tape and very thin plastic bags. 2 months later, I was very dissapointed all my grafting fail except two made it. I was very happy and had realizes only the clefting style works. You are right the fail ones cambium never touch and it dry out. So I re graft all the fail scions ones by doing the cleft grafting using the same scion. In 45 days later, all 13 grafting become 100% success. I was so proud of myself first time learn to graft. I learn this clefting style from Charles from IV- organic on TH-cam. The only different is - I use electrical tape and thin plastic bag not his fishing line. Thank you so much for confirming the detail 5 mistakes. I never thought of doing the side grafting before, seems easy your way. I will try to graft my jackfruits tree next week.

      Good luck, jackfruits have been the toughest to graft for me, side grafts fail almost always, please try cleft or even better approach graft for jackfruits.

    You're right, my brother! I have been learning to graft trees since I was in high school. I watched TH-cam videos and did exactly what they did, but I have wondered why none of them worked. That's when I started to research more on What to do and What to avoid. Grafting in your backyard is fun and seeing them succeed is very satisfying plus you get to have a lifetime skill that you can pass to younger generations.

I was succesiful in grafting guava, lemon and avocado but mostly failed in mango and jackfruit! I will try to improve my grafting by abiding more to your advice from your experience. Many thanks.

      Good luck 🍀! Jackfruit and sapodilla have been the most difficult, so don’t get discouraged if your jackfruit grafts fail. I only succeed in approach grafting those. Once i figure out a good technique with high success rates for jack and sapodilla, i will post it here.

    If u cut the outer bark only then it's fine to center the scion because then u have full cambium contact between the cambium layers on both the scion and the root stock.🤔

    Hi! Truly enjoyed your video. Thank you for being so kind, I will check your website for sure.
    You said you took scions a week ago. Did you use it for grafting still? or was that only to show the perfect scion?

    • @growpuravida
      @growpuravida  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you so much for your kind words! I had kept those scions only for the purpose of the video. Normally, in my experience, the scion with least delay - that you can use the soonest after cutting - would be the most ideal, though the one I demonstrated in the video did take. If you are not able to graft it the same day, I recommend putting the scion in a glass of water in a cool place (60-70F, not necessarily in the fridge). Can also be kept in a wet paper towel in a ziploc or an airtight plastic bag.

      I looked online for buddy tape on Amazon. There’s one that looks like the one you had on your video. It’s buddy tape for grafting. I didn’t realize buddy tape was used for splinting one finger to another. Anyway it looks very similar to paraffin grafting tape but it’s 5x more expensive. Is it really that much different and better?

    • @growpuravida
      @growpuravida  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Buddy tape is quite different, it is more stretchy and stronger as well. It does not crack open after a few weeks like parafilm, which makes a lot of difference for scions that stay green for a long time and take long to flush. It is about 5 times as expensive. I buy one perforated roll per year and do a lot of grafting, and seems like it lasts for a year. The price was/is $25 per roll with $5 shipping from a forum member at Tropical fruit forum buy/sell page.

    I’m just starting out and learning all about grafting. This is Very helpful. You clarified the cambium for me and how the scion cambium and the root stock cambium must be aligned. Rain water penetrating the graft?? I had no idea we have to do that. And creating a Micro climate to maintain moisture and humidity!! Good stuff !! Thanks! ….. By the way,, what is the plant behind you with tall stocks in the beginning of the video ? Is that ginger??

  • @onesmusndivo9765
    @onesmusndivo9765 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    Very informative but how many days were the scion taking after it cut from the mother plant?

    • @growpuravida
      @growpuravida  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Best is to graft as soon as possible, within hours. But if not possible then cover scion with parafilm or buddy tape and put inside airtight ziploc bag. I store them in fridge, not freezer. When ready to graft put them out of fridge, and ziploc bag and cut the base of scion 2-3 mm and then dip the scion base in a water for hydration. Then graft.

      Thank you. Yes you can use the tape if it is stretchable and insulates the scion from drying out. Good thing about the buddy tape is that one will not need to take the tape off for the bud to push, it usually pushes through the buddy tape.
      And if the weather is not very hot, and graft is in shaded area, you can also put a plastic cover on top of the scion after grafting instead of wrapping the scion with any tape.

      Thank you. If you are in U.S., you can order mango scions online from tropical acres mango farm website. I am not sure how to do that in India. Maybe you can get from Horticulture Institute of your region, probably there is one in Assam or maybe in West Bengal.

    Thanks a lot for your advise!
    A few questions:
    Do you use the same tape (buddy tape I guess) for grafting and for covering the scion?
    When do you remove the tape? Or in´t it really necessary?
    Are the best months for grafting the same for any other fruit trees?
    Thanks

      You are very welcome. Thanks for watching.
      I keep on experimenting with it. I always wrap the scion with buddy tape but after i graft, the union sometimes i wrap it only with buddy tape if it is very thin like while grafting 1/16 inch diameter jaboticaba scions. When it is thicker scions i have 3 options i play with. One is wrap tightly with electric tape. Another is use clothespin 2-3 to hold the union after i wrap union with buddy tape and 3rd way is to wrap with buddy tape and then use elastic rubber band to hold the union secure. I found different times of year different things work. Like the high humidity month i can not use electric tape because it caused the union to rot from too much heat and humidity trapped inside. I can use electric tape in spring and fall in subtropical climate but in summer i will use rubber band or better just 2 clothespins.
      No, best months for different fruit trees are different. Always graft annonas, mulberries and guavas in spring when the tree starts to push new growth. Loquats fo well in spring but they can take in summer too. Mangoes for me were good in May/June and then in October. Jackfruit and Mamey/sapotes do well when air humidity decreases but is still warm like mid October to mid November. This is for south Florida, and is my experience, other places may have different requirements.

      @@growpuravida Clothespins! Interesting concept... Some years ago I bought a grafted mamey, and the union started to open (!!!) short after I took the tape off. As some others ended getting dry the same way, I got alarmed, so I made a try by placing a tight cable tie on the opening place, and it worked fine. It´s still alive.
      I still haven´t graft anything yet, and now I want to graft a 3 years old seedling caimito (Chrysophyllum cainito). Do you have any experience with them? What season is better for caimitos? Thanks again.

    • @growpuravida
      @growpuravida  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I have no experience yet grafting caimito but i have a seedling in 3g and planning to do it after spring when night temps are above 70F, around beginning of May here in Florida.

    • @growpuravida
      @growpuravida  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      thank you. I remove the bag once i see that the new leaves from the scion have matured. Sometimes a scion pushes new leaves but they are not from union but from the stored energy in the scion itself. These new leaves will dry off in a few days. Usually if the scion pushes after 4 weeks it is after a good union and the leaves will continue to mature.

  • @faheemsiddiqui4662
    @faheemsiddiqui4662 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I think lots of people make mistake no.3 because of the over emphasis by professionals on matching sizes of scion and rootstock...rather than emphasising importance of matching cambiums of scion and r.stock on one side... 4 get about the other side.

    Thank you 😊 I will keep on trying. I thought bud wood occurred during April or may. You are saying it can occur In September or only if the tree is actively growing leaves...confusing part.

    • @growpuravida
      @growpuravida  10 หลายเดือนก่อน

      You can harvest budwood/scion when the mother tree is actively growing. The best scion is one that has at least one active bud and is hardened(not soft and new growth). Grafting can be done during any month that is warm, with weather that promotes growth of the rootstock tree. In different countries or climate the best month to graft will be different. You will have to protect the graft from rain, sun and wind, but any warm month will do if you have these protections in place.

    I enjoyed your video because you are a good teacher. Could you please tell me why I fail in grafting young avocado seedling? Whenever I graft young avocado seedling, new shoot will sprout from under and the Scion will dried out. Kindly help

    • @growpuravida
      @growpuravida  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you very much. May i ask you which technique you used for that avocado seedling? Side graft or top cleft graft? In top cleft, after you graft the plant will try to push buds and sprout from underneath the graft, do not let them grow, nip them off with finger when they bud out. If you let them grow, plant will ignore your graft and use this new sprout as a leader branch. I usually do side graft on seedlings for this reason.

    Will the entire tree grow fruit after a certain branch is grafted into or will only that branch produce fruit?

    • @growpuravida
      @growpuravida  14 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Only the grafted branch will bear fruit as it is a branch from a mature fruiting tree. The entire will eventually bear fruit after maturity, at 6-7 years age, but they will be different taste fruits than the ones from the grafted branch. Remember, do not let the grafted branch bear fruit for the first year after graft, if it flowers nip the flowers off.
