- in today's video we attempt to fix splayed legs in a newly hatched baby quail and made a big mistake that could have been bad.

So glad the quail is doing better!
So much better I'm so glad
What a great quail mama :)
Thank you 😊
Your urban garden bed game is next level
thank you
Nice job! That had to be tricky to do with how small they are. I'm a heavy handed clumsy person I would of been worried I'd break the little thing. Colors are beautiful!
It was so hard to get the rubber band on and even harder to get it off. I'm going to try a different method if this ever happens again.
Hello Kira, that was interesting about the foot/ leg fix. Very smart thing to do. The wing color was very pretty. 💕 NonnaGrace
I realized my only grey adult quail is a male so I'm so glad he is passing on those stunning feather colors. I also have a brown male so that's why we have a pretty even split of coloring. Half are grey and half are brown
I love the birdhouse planter at the beginning !
Thank you! My mom gave it to me 😊
Hello from Kansas! I saw you on the small TH-cam homesteaders on FB. Decided I’d come check you out! I hatched a chicken that had a leg issue, the leg was turned almost 180 degrees backwards! We tried to help him but the others trampled him as they got bigger. 😔
thanks for being here! poor little chick
Can I use normal transparent type of usual tape?
Hey my quail is 5 days old and we put a brace on today. Do you think that’s too late to see correction or working the brace just have to be on a bit longer than a couple days? Lmk if you have any insight on this!! Thank you
I don't think that's too late, I hope it worked out for you!
Stock tank pond? TIME TO GET DUCKS
I wish!!! I can't have them in the front yard. They would be literally sitting ducks for predators and not so nice people.
@@HomesteadDreaming Bummer!
Hi! My quails just hatched 2 days ago and there is one with splayed legs, i put the rubber band on him like your video but not to tight. Just wanted to ask if I need to take it out after a period of time everyday and put it back on or i should just leave it for couple days? And exactly how many days? Thanks! ❤️❤️
I would just watch the chick. If you're noticing it being able to keep its legs together then you can take it off. If it seems to be still splayed when you take it off I'd put it back on. As long as it's not hurting the legs you can leave for some days
@@HomesteadDreaming I just took the brace off and he now can slowly walk on his feet, so happy that he's doing better! Thanks so much for your videos ❤
Hey, My baby Quail is 4 days old and has a splayed... It's not eating it's own, so I'm feeding it by myself. So I can't keep it with the other quail babies. So I'm keeping it in the incubator... Can I do that? Will it have any problems staying in the incubator? I really hope I'm not doing something stupid... And I hope it's not too late to fix the splayed legs
I'd go ahead and do the rubber band and see if it helps the little guy move around. If so you'll need to show it how to drink and eat. Unfortunately if it still can't eat or drink on its own after you've fixed the legs then it may be more humane to put it down. Hope he makes a full recovery!
@@HomesteadDreamingThanks for replying... But Will it be safe to keep it in the incubator for 2 weeks or should i take him out?
@@Flavozona as long as there's no way for the little guy to fall or drown and is kept warm and dry and fed then the incubator is fine as a makeshift brooder. You could even do a little plastic tub with a wire top or a little hamster enclosure from a pet store
The audio is much better in this video!
$10 well spent haha
No nesting boxes needed for quail.. LOL. They just lay wherever.. LOL. Loving the baby quail..!! Oh... nothing like be the provider for your animals. What a great feeling. Looks like he or she is going to be fine. 😊 Wow. What a great garden you will have this year...Have a wonderful night you two..!!
PS. Watch out for Trap Drip... look it up..
Yea I noticed trap drip was spamming everyone. I just heart and keep going.
Hi! Saw you on Two Familys live, so I thought I'd pop over and show some support! Hope to see you come by too!
Thanks for coming!!!
add landscaping fabric over the grass to keep it from going into the garden beds
We are putting cardboard down to keep the grass out. I like that it breaks down slowly over time and feeds the soil above and below it. I also like that it allows worms through
at what age should you start trying to fix their legs? mines so tiny i don’t want to hurt it
As soon as you notice the issue and try to fix it, the better off they'll be. I wouldn't wait
How long would the quail need the hair tie to be on?
It varies based on severity of the splayed legs but I would just do it for a day and see if it helped and then check every 6 to 12 hours after that to see how it's doing
@@HomesteadDreaming ok thank you. Appreciate the fast reply
If your quail are being born with splayed legs this can mean two things:
#1: The mother was not eating enough and that egg had a deficiency
#2: The bird is inbred
Either way the bird should be culled and not allowed to have children of it's own for the health of future flocks
I've also read splayed legs is a direct result of raising chicks on flat surface such as paper towel
I recommend putting something like wood chips underneath the paper towel to create a softer ground to walk on
You can put the splayed leg chick in a cup or shot glass and it will try to get out by forcing it's legs downwards, this is great exercise for it just don't leave it in the glass alone, maybe if you have a child they can dedicate some time with the poor thing
I tried everything for one of my button quail but it's legs just got worse so I had to cull it
So this one in particular was splayed because it fell from the top of the incubator to the bottom and the surface was slick and it wasn't able to get traction for just enough time that it's legs kinda stuck that way. We've started to move away from quail as a whole though and focusing more on chickens.
I have a problem with my spray leg baby quail I hope I can help him poor Lill guy
Good luck! I hope your little guy makes a full recovery
Beds look nice. So do the quails!!
Thanks! I can't wait for the beds to be done. And I'm so glad the quail are doing well
Aw man. I really needed a deadcat in the video I recorded yesterday :( Better a broken egg in your hand than in your pocket on your phone. Ask me how I know...
Haha oh my gosh eggy phone sounds terrible
Why are you trying to get me to get quail??? CONSPIRACY!
That little mark will go away quickly.
GET QUAIL!!!!!
@@HomesteadDreaming LOL not helping hahaha
