  • A big question we get often is… Are we going to breed Lady again?! Today we answer that question and do some more training with our little filly June!
Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

As for breeding Lady again I cannot comment , I am not qualified, what I would like to see is Bree and June all trained up 4 or 5 year old and working on the farm and in the woods, what a great team they would make 2 full sisters, they would be magnificent

If you think about Jim and Brenda possibly selling June and Bree down the road. Some potential purchasers will be obtaining a young well trained horse with great start in life, to go forward and develop into a great working horse for their personal enjoyment . In the World of Horses, If you keep them all you can eventually become what we call horse poor and the cost overhead also increases along with the work involved. Jim also only needs so many draft horses to farm and log for sure.

My system for breeding depended on the age of the mare. Carrying a fool for the third consecutive year is asking a lot for an older mare. I would wait and breed her in late March or early April. Allowing the fool to be born before the fly season. And before the heat of summer.

Yes, Lady looks in good health and vet says it's good to go. Horses are bred every year, wild or domestic, as long they are healthy, they WILL stand for a stallion regardless in what we want or don't want. Good idea to get her bred to a Belgian to keep the breed pure. If someone wanted one of your Belgian or Suffolk horse, I'm sure you would sell the foals while training the colts for farm and logging work. Nothing wrong with a bit of extra income for the farm. Brenda your flowers are gorgeous!

Hey Jim and Brenda, Another wonderful video . June is doing extremely well with her training. Your methods are excellent exposing her to the other horses in their stalls is great, and then leading her into the sawmill was great and watching June step over the 4 x 4 timber was perfect. The more you handle and expose the young horse to different situations . The trust bond between the trainer and the filly or colt increases. Breeding Lady back to a registered Belgian Stallion is a great plan. It's wonderful that Lady and Baron produced a couple of fine Suffolk Punch / Belgian Crosses. With a few years they should end up with 2 fine driving and possible saddle mares. Have a peaceful weekend . I hope your new drain tile does its job with all rain that New State and Ontario and Quebec Canada have been experiencing over the last week or so.

I like the idea of answering one or two questions at the end of your videos. It would be an interesting minute or two ending to a video.
Breeding back Lady to a Belgian is a great idea!
People are going to be upset when and if you sell any of the horses in your videos. However, as a farmer, that’s part of how you make a living. As a kid growing up on a farm, I always felt sad when a calf, cow or any animal was sold. It was especially hard when we sold the beagle puppies our beagle had every year. My sister and I would always cry when one was sold. We were never told not to be sad, but we came to learn that was how we made a living on the farm.

I think the Belgian stud is quite handsome! that should give a visually attractive foal, but also the builds are very complimentary. He looks a little thicker and shorter than Lady, which is fine, as you said. Definitely getting a platinum mane though. They look like a good cross, I like it! Looking forward to seeing the baby. Hope you keep June and Bree, but that's years from now. I like the Suffolk/Belgian cross, but with the Suffolks needing more genetics due to underpopulation crossing them isn't the best for them. But Belgian Punch sounds neat anyway.

PG here, Thank you for all the Horse Progress videos. What a delight! All the children drivig teams of those small little horses. It was amazing. Up to the Mule, Huge animals! 8 team Mules I think. It was breath taking. ***Question*** If people really want their question to been seen Use the number 8 shift so you get a star, 3 in front of the Question 3 stars in the end. It makes the cntent bold. ***Do Those huge Mules pull more weight than the suffux, (I think) He was 2,210 pounds of pure muscle. Jim drove this horse the first day and I think most of the time?*** I am so glad Lady is bred again. She is a magnificiant horse and a good protective Mother. So much to say but I don't want to bore anyone. since July 4 I have been so delighted with all your videos. (Well, I always am. But this one a once in a life time educational lessons. Jim you drive me crazy sometimes .Your title is should we breed Lady again (Belgian mare) . Then we learn in the video that she was already bred to a Belgian stallion . Future looks like too many work horses and not enough work .But that is just my opinion .3 foals will need training . Plus 3 working teams now . 8 horses now with one more next year . Am I correct .Gosh your channel is fun and 100k subscribers. Many more I hope .Cheers Chips 😊😊😊

Suggestion, when you see a question you may wish to answer one day, perhaps take a screen shot of it and save it to a file/folder specifically for the purpose of being able to keep tabs on them. That way you can delete them once answered (or pop them into an "answered" folder).
I do this a lot for all sorts of things I want to keep track of, but don't have time nor inclination to write down on a list.

When you mentioned mules it brought to mind my granddad. He had a farm in central Illinois in the early part of the 20th century. He had some beautiful draft mares and he bred them to a very large white jackass. He loved to tell me all about buying that jack in Missouri and naming him The Missouri Monarch. I guess these mares produced large mules that he sold to the Amish farmers in the area. By the time I was born his favorite mares and The Monarch were long gone so all I got were the stories. He still bred draft horses but the mule business was over. I was born on that farm and lived the early part of my life there.

I think Skip might be part duck. I'm glad you are breeding her to a Belgian this time. Young'n has really gotten interested in rare breeds and declining endangered breeds. Apparently Belgian and Percheron numbers are also declining. Clydes and Shires were already low, and of course, Suffolks are very endangered. I hate to see these good, hard knocking, honest, blue collar breeds of horses declining. I'm glad you will be bringing another full Belgian into the world. June is coming along really nicely. Easy explanation: silage or haylage is sauerkraut for cattle. 🙂 If you ferment it, it will keep. If you don't ferment it and it is too wet, it will rot or heat up and catch fire. If you want your horses to stand, let them spend a lot of time standing tied, work them hard enough that they actually get tired and find standing to be a reward, and don't hang on their mouths once they stop. Many people teach their horses to dance around by not letting up on their mouths.

Lady is fit and healthy for her age - and she produces amazing offspring - so of course it is fine to breed her again. And I can appreciate your decision to breed her to a Belgian stud. June is coming on so well - great training - and she seems to have more of her dad’s mindset, gentle and willing - whereas Bree seems to have more of Lady’s temper and can be more independently minded and even a bit mardy at times 😊

They can breed in their twenties, but you gotta keep them full when they are aged. No great shakes, no washing, no diapers, foal slung in a hammock, one whicker keeps them together. She loves mothering.

Actually an informed decision would be to talk to your vet regarding breeding Lady again. She did have a slight problem this past time with the after birth. It would be a good idea to have June's umbilical area checked by the vet to make sure it's not going to be a hernia.

Thanks and greetings to J and B, Love the channel! X We breed Clydesdales. We often give the mare a rest for a year before breeding again but if Lady is doing OK then should be OK. Jim and Brenda, as some others on here have mentioned, I need to say something about the weather and hope you understand am only speaking out as am concerned for the future of farming, our health, kids future and planet. The weather is being tampered with and is happening all across the world. I am in Norway, Europe and is starting to be admitted by "authorities" under pretence of Climate BS. We have worked outdoors all our lives, mostly commercially with Clydesdales. Due to long term illness I can't work the horses now so can only now focus on breeding. We had never heard or noticed this cloud manipulation before, but then saw about 4 years ago a strange substance landed onto outdoor raincoats, and a new tarpaulin where it made white marks and has never come off! Can I ask those on here that also realise what is going on to make contact with me directly somehow so we can connect to try stop this. Happening everyday here and has either rained or snowed every other day for nearly a year! Very difficult here too to make Hay. Only get 2 dry days then it pours down, which is not long enough to make good hay. We see the spraying start in the mountains where we are, white lines which spread out and get wider then turn the sky White. We used to have Blue Skies and Sunsets. Like most busy folks, I think Jim and Brenda we are too busy/distracted to have time to stop and look up for long enough to see what is happening but hope soon realise as it is a very dangerous and serious situation, we all need to do something about it asap so can keep ourselves, our animals, crops and environment healthy. Official information from FOI where UK Gov say they told people in a radio broadcast about 12 years ago! I can share this factual information if anyone wants to see it. This video talks about it: th-cam.com/video/jTp5hTDbPm0/w-d-xo.htmlsi=QPmSU0Tl3mLFGQO9 So as it is now coming out what they are doing, I suggest we all that love life, help each other to get it stopped. Hope I don't get trolled on here, just that I care. Thanks :)

At the breeding farm I worked at years ago they would breed twice then give the mare a year off, up to age 15. Producing foals is a drain on a mares reserves and a down year allows replenishment. Also after 15 there is an increase in risks with foaling, kinda like women over 40. It means you just have to be more careful, watchful, and more frequent vet checks.

I've been following your family for a couple years and enjoy the channel. But this is just my opinion--those foals of Lady may live longer than you two. I have see too many horses going to auction and then slaughter on many sites that I wonder what you have planned for them. There's not many people anymore who live your lifestyle and the Amish don't have a great reputation with their animals. I do love how your family takes care of all your animals.

Ive had an interest in learning how to work with horses. I used to work on a horse farm and I really enjoy working with them. However, there are no farms or businesses locally that work with horses. Are there classes I could sign up for, or means to find work (recruitment sites, websites) that would involve driving horses that I could learn from? I'd be willing to travel even, if necessary.
