Shen Actually I had a Gold Version as a kid that my older cousin gave me. The battery was already dry and I never played it since. 3 years ago I sold it to my local comic book shop because well....it didn't save and I didn't know how to change it. So I just sold it off.
+Casual King i know right? i had a pokemon blue version that i found in a gameboy color in a gutter (my into to the video game world) that wouldnt save
Easily one of the best tutorials shown for changing the battery WITHOUT A SOLDERING TOOL . Every other tutorials make it seem like that took is a must but no all u need a screw driver a flathead an some tape thank u so much
Lol I kept expecting Pimp to say something like "I decided to switch in to my Pliers just to tank that Solder and stall him out." Now I want an entire tutorial video from Pimp where he just uses Pokemon related terms to describe what he's doing.
Thank you very much for showing me how to replace the battery! My Pokemon Blue game wasn't able to save for years, but I bought an Energizer battery for CR2025 and used pliers that I bought at Fry's and I was able to slowly take the two strips that hold down the battery off and replace it. I actually used stick glue meant for school because I forgot that you said not to use glue, but it works fine. :) I really appreciate that you showed us how to replace the save battery. I realized that you don't have to put the first strip on the bottom of the battery; if you glue the battery down first and then put both strips on top of the battery, the game still saves every time. Thanks again for your help.
To get the screw out, take the internals of a plastic pen out and then hold a lighter to the tip on the plastic pen for like 5-10seconds. Then hold the pen tip to the screw so you can create a mold and hold it there for like a minute or 2. Then you should be able to take the screw out easier.
Thank you very much, PIMPNITE. Great tutorial! Easy to follow and understand than most of the others available with the same method. Now I can replay Pokemon Stadium 1 & 2 to its fullest once again.
I changed my battery around 2-3 years ago (it was also Pokemon Silver), it took me some time to find some instructions of how to do it, but I was happy with final result :). Now it would be much easier with your video :P
+Shiny Missingno. - lol Step 1: Open the cartridge with a screwdriver or something Step 2: Take out the battery. Step 3: SMASH AN EGG INSIDE IT! Step 4: Put the new battery in the cartridge. Step 5: SMASH ANOTHER EGG INSIDE IT! Step 6: Close it up. Step 7: Smash the entire cartridge with a hammer non-stop while making grunting noises and finish it off with an egg toss. Good as new... Better than new! Now you can play with real power.
wow I'm super glad you posted this! i had no idea this was such a common problem or that it would be such an easy fix! Boy am I glad I decided to hold onto silver version
Thanks, the more videos like this to pull tips from, the better imo. Another good tip I heard about the main screw was take a cheepo biro ballpoint, unscrew it all and use a lighter to soften the end and have it mold around the screwhead, let it cool and use it as a tool. Good luck Shiny hunting, breeding works in Gen 2. The opposite gendered child to a shiny parent had a 1/64 chance of having shiny DVs I beleive. A same gendered child is 1/2 or 1/4 times that chance, I forget. The usual problem is pulling the battery out means you lose the game saved but I mean chances are its too dead to even hold it so its not really an issue. There is a tool called a mega memory card but man are they rare.
Couple of tips:Get a biro pen and take the nib, ink, and top off melt down the top with a lighter to make it soft then press down on to the game boy screw and you then have a plastic screw remover! 2nd tip when the plastic is off plug the game in to a game boy SP advance and then turn the game on and load your save then carefully remove and replace the battery (by doing this with the game turned on your save is still powerd by the game boy and you can then still keep your original game! )
I know its not the good place, but i am suggesting to you to continue the trainer's theme team by doing teams with pokemon that if you were the gym leader, you would use. So if, for example, you were the electric gym leader, what pokemon would you use? Its a suggestion, I just want to say that what you do is cool, and keep up the work !
I made a makeshift screwdriver with a mechanical pencil. I took all of the parts out so I just had the tip and handle, I used a lighter and heated up the tip so it was soft and pressed it against the screw. This only woks for a short while, the plastic does not hold the shape for long once hardened, but you can reuse the same pencil tip a few times.
1) prying loose the contacts was hell. But I managed it using pincette pliers from a nintendo toolkit found on amazon. (same that got me the gamebit screwdriver) I made little waves and then used a small flat screwdriver to push it under the ripples. It took me about 15 minutes for both contacts, working milimeter for milimeter really takes patience and a steady hand. For the bottom contact, that seems very difficult at first because you cant handle under the battery, but here I used the pincette to curl it up, sort of making "hair locks", an bit by bit it came off. 2) then i used the pincette to cut off the yellowish band thingy around the old battery and put it over the new battery, so the upper - contact does not get in contact with the broader + side of the 2025 battery, which overextends. Kinda like a protection suit. 3) Straightening the contacts with some broader pliers was no problem. 4) The hardest part was taping. I dont have that blue glue that you have, so I just took the next household tape band I have, very carefully but it into the right size (which is hell, because it needs to have enough space to stick, but must not interfere with the small metal thingys on the board), and somehow failed to make it stick. for now, its an additional stabilisator, but must not be shaken. really need to rework this with the blue glue if I ever get to buy one over here. Welp!. Meh, so I put on the top lid, screwed it tight, and it seems to work again. Atleast for now. I will report back if it stops doing so.
Changing the battery can be fun and frustrating at the same time with those prongs on the battery. Sometimes they just stick on too tight but you dont want to break the arms. Also ive seen a few videos on this and you are the only person I have seen use blue tack, it was very interesting. Also I love your pokemon theme teams :)
If the battery arms are corroded, and you don't feel comfortable replacing them, DO NOT USE SANDPAPER. Sandpaper will limit the conductivity of the arms and limit the longevity of your game and battery. Instead, gently scrape it lengthwise with a pocket or Swiss knife until it shines to remove corrosion
what is so weird is that I have purchase electrical tape and the battery a few days ago... lol. I think it's the nostalgia of 20 years celebration that has everyone wanting to play their old games :)
Thanks a lot for the video, but i have a question. Even though you replace the battery, (i tried this) doesnt the battery only last a few. The battery that it came with lasted for 5 years-ish. But the ones you buy only last for maybe a month or a year
Razor blade does a perfect job as well. Since it's really fine and can get underneath the tab quickly. You slowly use a full size blade and the tabs won't have any damage(if you're somewhat careful).
+snurfsnarf Hey Ian, Yeah same thing except for GBA it's to fix the internal battery (for anyone that didn't know that). It will say something like the internal battery has run dry , thus replacing it will fix that.
Jonathan Landay Yea sorry, that's what I meant to say. Because they use the same type of battery it's attached the same way. So the taping method should work. Here's a SNES specific tutorial motherboard.vice.com/blog/pictures-how-to-replace-an-snes-cartridge-save-game-battery
pimp, you have to make sure that you leave it off for a while and try again to ensure that it does keep the save. I've seen it before where you save and you could go back into it within five minutes but after like half an hour the save is no longer there.
you should do a survivors teambasically you take six pokemon from your previous battles that were the last pokemon alive for that battle. the pokemon you choose should retain the same moveset as it had from before. For example: full villains team: sharpedo
Oh my god how fucking amazing is this *-* My pokemon Gold and pokemon Silver Games Wont Save so Perfect timing ^-^ Now i just Need to know how to Trade pokemon via cable cause iT Wont work when i use it but the the cable is fine ^^
I wish I saw this video 13 years ago :'(
+Casual King me too
+Casual King 13 years ago the games were still working fine tho...
Shen Actually I had a Gold Version as a kid that my older cousin gave me. The battery was already dry and I never played it since. 3 years ago I sold it to my local comic book shop because well....it didn't save and I didn't know how to change it. So I just sold it off.

+Casual King i know right? i had a pokemon blue version that i found in a gameboy color in a gutter (my into to the video game world) that wouldnt save
you can also melt a plastic rod and press it against the hole where the screw is so it mimics the shape if you dont have pliers, thats how I did it
+TheFunBox We tried the plastic rod technique but couldn't get it to work even after 3 hours of trying
Easily one of the best tutorials shown for changing the battery WITHOUT A SOLDERING TOOL . Every other tutorials make it seem like that took is a must but no all u need a screw driver a flathead an some tape thank u so much
This video makes me think i'm going blind
Lol I kept expecting Pimp to say something like "I decided to switch in to my Pliers just to tank that Solder and stall him out."

Lol
+FartingSpider12 It was very tempting :P
PIMPNITE Lol well anyways keep up the good work and stay awesome!
+PIMPNITE when you're talking the strips out ur hands are shaking XD
+FartingSpider12 I'm amazed the Pliers could take the solder that well, I ran him once and he seemed like a glass cannon
Where the fuck was this video when I was eleven and my Gold version was busted!? I cried my eyes out when I learned that my Pokemon were all erased.
+Danger Beans Why was it erased?
+night shroud96 Because the battery ran out I've got the same problem with my silver version Once the battery goes so does the save data
Not only the great entertaining wifi battles but teaching you how to fix your pokemon games dude you're great
Thank you so much! I always thought all of my GBC games were broken but now I can finally fix them! Now I can finally play Gold after 13 years.
I did this last year with all 3 of my Gen 2 games- it was so nostalgic playing through Crystal again!
I gave this a watch after you mentioned it on stream and I learned something new thanks Ben. 👍🏽
Sweet! Time to repair your old game

My yellow version still works but my silver won't save so thanks
Same. Gold dead
Yellow works

Thank you very much Pimp, I broke my refrigerator...
I changed my battery around 2-3 years ago (it was also Pokemon Silver), it took me some time to find some instructions of how to do it, but I was happy with final result :). Now it would be much easier with your video :P
If you do other live action videos, it would be cool to see the set up you have for recording & what you use, even showing off your capture card.
I expected this video to be alantutorial or a HowToBasic kind of video.
+Shiny Missingno. - lol
Step 1: Open the cartridge with a screwdriver or something

+Shiny Missingno. Me too
Thank you so much!!! I've already fixed my Pokemon Crystal and it works! I can restart this beautiful game, thanks a lot
You're actually very good at explaining technical things. Great job with the vid. :)

Thank you so much! It’s actually the same game I need a new battery on. Saved me $50 from the game shop for a new game!
Hot damn, Ben, just last week I tried to do this with my Pokemon Crystal. Super coincidence that you would upload this just a week later lmao
+Roggentrolla haha destiny
Damn Daniel
This whole video made me feel like I didn't have my contact lenses on.
1) prying loose the contacts was hell. But I managed it using pincette pliers from a nintendo toolkit found on amazon. Pokémon Red was my first favorite video game and it finally died last year. Thanks for the vid!
Thanks! Pokemon Crystal was the exact game I was looking to fix too!
Glad It helped!
This...was...very...uh...informative? but yeah i liked it and it was helpful
This video is going to bang guaranteed few mill views in a month or two
I am glad I still kept my Pokemon Red and Silver cartridges
Same my silver version is saved all of my hours
Im happy I kept Gold. I was gonna go trade it in for Blue Yellow Or Crystal today
I did this on my Gold and Silver a little while ago. Works like a charm😄
this is so relevant for me bc i just tried to fix my crystal and wasnt succesful. thanks!
I miss those times with the old games:( using cables to battle each other.
THANK YOU SO MUCH i can finally use my gen 2 games and save :)
Hey Pimp, you have the same colored Gameboy as I do, great tutorial btw.
I think you can purchase batteries that have the tabs on them allowing for very easy soldering.
what is so weird is that I have purchase electrical tape and the battery a few days ago... lol. I think it's the nostalgia of 20 years celebration that has everyone wanting to play their old games :)
This is really helpful! Maybe I'll dare try and do this one day. 0: .
Could you make such a video for Gameboy Advanced games if you know how to fix the same issue for these games?
+doodle_commentZ Nevermind it seems to work for GBA too, ty.
Yeah it's the same for all gb cartridges
DS games?
PsychicVortex :-)
+PsychicVortex
DS games use flash memory and don't require a battery. There shouldn't be any problem saving with those.
My Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow must be immortal cuz they still work!
the battery is for saving the game data
+Armando Orozco That's what I meant. They still save. My Blue still has all the original 151 Pokemon. I haven't played it in like over 10 years.
Crystal, Gold, and Silver tend to last less than Red, Blue, and Yellow because of the real time clock added.
Thanks a lot for the video, but i have a question. Even though you replace the battery, (i tried this)
doesnt the battery only last a few. The battery that it came with lasted for 5 years-ish. But the ones you buy only last for maybe a month or a year
Bring back this to the past!
Cuticle cutters work great for getting the metal arms off, just putting it out there
Razor blade does a perfect job as well. Since it's really fine and can get underneath the tab quickly. You slowly use a full size blade and the tabs won't have any damage(if you're somewhat careful).
Thank you. Now I can revive Gold and Silver. ;w;
Do you know if the process is similar for GBA games?
+snurfsnarf Hey Ian, Yeah same thing except for GBA it's to fix the internal battery (for anyone that didn't know that). It will say something like the internal battery has run dry , thus replacing it will fix that.
+PIMPNITE Does this same method work for SNES since the internal battery process is similar?
+Jonathan Landay Should be. I did it for NES and I'm fairly certain they use the same battery.
+Mario Rodriguez I meant in terms of taping as opposed to soldering it...
Jonathan Landay Yea sorry, that's what I meant to say. Because they use the same type of battery it's attached the same way. So the taping method should work. Here's a SNES specific tutorial
motherboard.vice.com/blog/pictures-how-to-replace-an-snes-cartridge-save-game-battery
@PIMPNITE, As of now, did the gum be a reliable material to mount the arms on the battery? How did it withstand a year almost two?
I swear that After he took the battery out he would say "Now,Ive gotta to use rest for a little bit"
Thanks so much for this! Gonna start repairing my Red, Gold and Crystal! Have no idea how but somehow my Yellow is still surviving haha.
Camermon yeah i just received one from a friend and amazingly despite its slight condition its still working.
Camermon yeah i just received one from a friend and amazingly despite its slight condition its still working.
That was a close battle!
Thank u I needed that now my brother can play poke Mon red
Thank you for this video. It really helped
Huh so when the battery run dry ingame they weren't lying. Amazing
goddamn, I wish I know this years and years ago :(, my childhood right here
I think I may have been the only person that didn't know that there were batteries in the old Gameboy games.
Will the Energizer battery last as long or longer than the prior battery? I'd assume so.
Yay now I can fix my pokemon yellow and Pokémon gold🙌🙌🙌
Here in 2016 with yellow and red with original internal battery and they still work :D knock on wood
I guess i'm not the only one who have had this problem that a GBC Pokemon game won't save
pimp, you have to make sure that you leave it off for a while and try again to ensure that it does keep the save. I've seen it before where you save and you could go back into it within five minutes but after like half an hour the save is no longer there.
Worked for me, thanks
i have a bunch of uncommon screwdriver tips, so I can avoid the pliers technique.
is the battery during a long time? Because these batteries don't "tuff" a long time on flashlights
Idk if anybody still looks at the comments here, but what is that bluetec..? Stuff you used. I live in europe, and i dont really recognise what it is.
ah the mystery monday video isnt a theme team today. will be handy i guess
won't it be too hard to get the tack off next time you need to change the battery? What if you pull off the conducting strip off?
That was surprisingly helpful, thanks :]
Is the original save data gone forever after replacing the battery?
Yes unless you do this with the cartridge in with no face cover keep the game running while you swith the battery then after save the data
lucky my silver copy still works and i plan on getting crystal and yellow or any other gen 1 games so i can refer back to this
Screw 2025, gotta use that 2032 (for even more lasting time)!
Wait so my soul silver version wasn't really broken?????
WHERE WERE YOU FIFTEEN YEARS AGO
Is it the same for the Japanese copies of Red and Green
You should've posted this video on February 27th after all of us purchased the remake of the original Pokemon games
Question
Does this work with gba games like ruby or emerald? Or how different is it?
It also works for them too
Finally I can play my gold version
Will you play them
you should do a survivors teambasically you take six pokemon from your previous battles that were the last pokemon alive for that battle. the pokemon you choose should retain the same moveset as it had from before. For example: full villains team: sharpedo
Oh my god how fucking amazing is this *-*
My pokemon Gold and pokemon Silver Games Wont Save so Perfect timing ^-^
Now i just Need to know how to Trade pokemon via cable cause iT Wont work when i use it but the the cable is fine ^^
it may work in lithium battery?
i have this too whit ym silver and crystal, but pimp what is the yellow thing around the battery of the crystal game ?
Thank you!
Thank you so much

Will you lose your saved game and if so is there a way to replace the battery without getting rid of the saved game.
hi ben are u from australia, what part???
tell us how much technical know how is needed to fix each part of a gba? i still have my old gba and i will restore it in the future.
Cool vid pimp. I've never actually seen a battery replacement so this was very cool and informative
Thank you I thought you could only solder
+PIMPNITE I have 2 questions. # 1: Can we Post Our Theme/Sweep Suggestions for this video? # 2:When will Pokemon:Yellow come back?
+Bennie J Morris NO juts in the team/sweep videos lol
luckyshinyhunter º-º Were you saying NO to The Theme/Sweeps or Pokemon:Yellow?
Bennie J Morris pokemon yellow next weak i think the sugestions are just in the sweep/team videos
put them in the comments of theme team/ sweep videos, if people like the idea it should work
Delbert Woodard What the FUCK are you talking about?
Oh how'd you know it was my silver version that needed the replacement?
