      I just got Pokemon Silver from a Retro game shop and I had played Silver for like 5 hours on the last save. Then yesterday when I opened the game later to continue playing the save file had disappeared. So they sold me a game with dead battery. Also the shop claimed they had "tested" the game. It seems they didn't do more than open the game.

    If you're don't have the tool to open the gamepack you can use a pen. Just remove the ink first. (Make sure it's a plastic tipped pen.) take a lighter to gently melt the tip of your pen, then you press the still hot pen tip onto the screw, letting it cool will allow it to form to the screw. Then proceed to use the pen as your screwdriver.

    For those of you who do not own screwdrivers that small, I found that thumbtacks worked most effectively as a substitute. Be warned, it will scratch your game cartridge, and yourself if you aren't careful. I also found that tweezers worked when the screw was loose, and were handy for prying the metal flaps off of the battery. I even managed to substitute a 2032 battery for a 2025, as both batteries were the same size and voltage, differing only in thickness. The battery managed to fit in the cartridge just barely.

      Will Strantz if u beat the pokemon league every time u accomplish something, such as catch a new pokemon, i find that it saves for about a week if u turn the game off. If it does accidently freeze or u shut it off by mistake, turn it back on as fast as u can. Also do not battle at the trainer house in Viridian City because it will make your game crash. My game has been on for over 1200 hours now

      You could take them off without ripping it off the board like this guy did in the video. All you need is a soldering iron.

    • @DoctorEd
      @DoctorEd 11 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can also reattach the battery easier without using any tape. tape may corse a short with the board and will most probably kill your gameboy.

    This is mandatory viewing for anyone buying Pokémon Gold, Silver or Crystal. Unless the seller specified that the battery has been replaced, 99.99% of the time the battery will be dead. Nintendo estimated that the batteries would last 5 years. My Crystal lasted 13 years before showing signs of a dying battery. At that stage it was part of a dwindling minority of games that still saved using the original battery. At this point, all of the batteries are likely dead or replaced.
    Anyone who wants to keep their save file in these games should buy a Gameboy Mega Memory Card. This is a device that copies save files to and from cartridges. For Gold, I replaced the battery and then copied the save back. There's even a way to copy files from the Mega Memory Card to a PC, though you need some more tools to do that.

    Thanks! I have my game apart and the battery out. The metal arms are still intact too. I've figured out that in a set of mini screwdrivers that the smallest flat head is the best to get under the arms and pry them off without breaking them. Just need to by the battery now.

  • @kledder2
    @kledder2 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    It's best to use a soldering iron. If you don't have that and aren't willing to buy it then I would suggest you use a thin knife and get it under the arm and bend it open. Then use a needle-nose plier to straighten he arms and then get the battery back in. You can use a bit of instant glue to help keep it in place better.

    I don't often leave comments. I just bought a Red pokemon on e-bay and sure enough, I couldn't save...
    I have NEVER played pokemon and wanted to try it out (now that I am an adult I wanted to spoil my inner poké-deprived-child).
    I scratch my cartridge trying to loosen the screw with tiny screwdriver and used some normal tape on both sides to hold the battery. Make sure to put the positive side down !
    Now I can fulfill a very simple childhood wish.
    So, seriously,
    Thank you.

    Thanks Man, Recently I've finally gotten around to playing through the pokemon games and I got to Crystal (which I recently bought a cheap copy of) and I found out that Dunsparce is only in Gold and Silver. Well, my brother has two copies that he isnt using, but BOTH have bad batteries. It's nice to know it's literally this easy.

    Saved me from having to face my big brother and saying to him " Hey, guess what? I just destroyed your childhood game! Aren't you proud of me?"😃😄

    For the tape I'd suggest a slightly different method. Using a thin strip sliding it sticky side up underneath the bottom attachment and then folding it up around the battery and top attachment from either side will assure the battery should stay touching the attachments, even if it's moved around a bit.
    Sticking it down from the top may work, but losing a save file due to not being careful enough wouldn't be fun.

    100% worked for me for my poke-mon silver copy I used a CR2032T 3v maxwell battery from my countculater sorry my spelling yeah it's slightly bigger than the CR2025T 3v battery the cartridge holds it in place while the screw secures it from moving so yeah thanks man

    I've heard that soldering the battery to the tabs is diffcult as the solder doesn't tend to stick. It also tends to ruin the battery with the heat of the solder. Hope that helps.

  • @wiisixtyfour
    @wiisixtyfour  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    make sure the metal arms are firmly in contact with the battery. There could also be some other kind of damage to the cartridge, I'm not sure.

  • @wiisixtyfour
    @wiisixtyfour  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm not sure about that. I do know that if it has a battery it will be a different size and type. You will also need a "tri-wing" screwdriver (or a really small precision flat-head screwdriver) to open the cartridge.

    Awesome, I found my Game Boy Color!!! Pokemon Silver was in it. Got the CMOS battery out of an unused motherboard and swapped it out. Looking forward to playing some old school Pokemon. :D

    In order to retain a gamesave old cartridges like this one need a small amount of power so they use a battery. It's common in older cartridge based games.

    Hi there. Very clear and informative video so thank you :) my issue is that I have rather clumsy hands and am reluctant to risk trying this in case I break it. Would it be worthwhile taking this (plus the new battery into an electronic repair shop? Alternatively, do you know if buying a brand new Gold/Silver would need new batteries or does the battery only wear down once you start playing? Any help you can give would be much appreciated :)

    you would be better off with buying a battery with the terminals, or as you said "arms" assembled on already and with that yellow sleeve around it. This prevents the negative terminal from shorting against the positive side of the battery. It also allows you to properly solder the battery in place. A kit including two batteries and the screwdriver gamebit for a little less than 8 dollars with free shipping on ebay. They really aren't that expensive. also, its cleaner to desolder and resolder, and it will prevent any future problems that can be caused by this method

    If you are looking to do this more properly, you can buy these batteries with the tabs already welded on at Digi-Key. Part no. P657-ND will get you what you need.

    In case any of you were wondering why this game's save file wouldn't work, it's becuase the time thing they ask you at the start is constantly running, even when your not playing the game to keep up on time. This is how my pokemon gold broke because i beat it 5 years ago then found it in my storage room a couple days ago, and i't didn't work. This is also why so many pokemon emerald, ruby and sapphire games save files broke too.

  • @wiisixtyfour
    @wiisixtyfour  12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Yes you can buy a new game that works, but it will eventually die (as all batteries will). It could last for many years. That doesn't mean you can't enjoy the game for that time and it doesn't mean you can't eventually replace the battery when it dies.

    I just opened my Pokemon gold trying to fix the battery, someone wayyyyy back then like 2001 replaced the battery and everything on the circuit board, I got the battery out tho and the 2 metal peices bent off pretty easy. Probably gonna get a new battery today. Thanks m8 for the tutorial
