I had stopped buying comics in 2014 as I was buying too many and not reading any. I still kept up with comic news and started to focus on Absolute editions. When Doomsday Clock first came out I wasn’t going to get it, but then Gary Frank’s art got to me. I bought the whole series and got back into buying comics after that. Luckily I now read the few comics that I get. So looking forward to getting this in Absolute edition.

This was my first ever event story I ever collected and kept up with. So this (Rebirth) era will always have a special place in my heart. With the exception of the delays, my only other problem was the lead up to the big "fight." It was pretty obvious what was happening, and what wasn't. Especially if you knew the two main characters. But the big "fight" should've been on panel, straight slugfest, and a definitive winner between Superman and Black Adam.

Thanks for the review, Omar! My copy is on the way, I really liked Doomsday Clock. Probably helped that I waited until it was finished to read it. Great story by Johns and maybe the best artwork of Gary Frank's career, just beautiful.

Apart from what I thought was a slightly underwhelming slipcase design (I would have loved a large logo like Absolute Watchmen on the slipcase spine and maybe more detailed artwork) this beautiful book is definitely the way to go to read Doomsday Clock. I like the way it tries to make sense of various DC reboots in terms of Superman’s place in it all. I held off buying the two standard HC’s in preference to a bigger single collection, so happy I did! Thanks Omar!

I leave the plastic on the slipcase I just cut down the side where the book comes out and tape the flap in the box so your leaflet can stay in place us protect the box still , I used to do the same with dvd box set boxes

    @Lang7 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

Regardless of what you think of the story (personally I really enjoyed the final 6 issues), Gary Frank's art is stunning. Doomsday Clock deserves to be published in Absolute format for that alone. Issue 9 was such a good read and the highlight of the whole story IMO.
DC editorial deciding to go with Scott Snyder's Metal story was an awful choice, and this is coming from a huge Batman fan. I feel like Bruce works best as a small to medium scale character who has important moments in the grand scheme of things. Making him the centre of the multiverse, with various evil iterations of him as the main antagonists, was ridiculous. Going through Metal felt like reading an awful fanfic.

I remember reading this in the two HC's that got sold, and thought the story was only sort of okay, but dropped the ball at the end, hard.
But, I also think reading it as one full book might help the story flow better, so, gonna sell those og HC's with the slipcase to make up for buying this.
It's definitely a beautiful book, and I'd say the best thing to come out of it is the mime couple. They were so interesting, it makes me wish they were used in other DC properties.
Still tho, great overview as always Omar, keep up the fantastic work. 👍

Hey Omar, what I find strage is that nobody noticed that issue 1 of this series got released 2017-11-22 (22nd of novembre 2017) which is exactly to the date from the release of issue of Superman 75 (death of supermen wich was released to the date 25 years earlier on the 22nd novembre 1992 (I remember because it is the birthday of my father) which is the first thing written in issue 1 of Doomsday Clock. So take this in consideration when you get to the conclusion of this series and it's more ... wow impact. It is in continuaty because the recent series Flashpoint Beyond is referencing it. It is in continuaty of everything Geoff Johns.
    November 22, 2017
The first issue of Doomsday Clock was released on November 22, 2017, with a planned run of 12 issues.

Loveeeeee this book. I understand how people might think it tarnishes the original, like any prequel/sequel/adaptation of Watchmen, but I enjoyed it all the same. The artwork is spectacular! So awesome, such rich coloring as well. Hoping for a deluxe edition eventually, just because while I would love to have this I can't quite justify the price of it.

You’re completely right. I was one of the idiots who tortured themselves by reading it as it came out. Complete hell is all I can say and not to mention the constant delays through the 2 years. It’s way too dialogue heavy, I was genuinely confused by issue 5. I just started all over again when the 12 issues were released and my god, it was a completely different experience.

I probably shouldn't but I plan to buy this one to get the oversized Gary Frank art. I thought this was a worthy sequel to Watchmen & a brilliant way to course correct The New 52. I've heard that the creators got editorial interference from Didio which why the ending was not what it could have been. Still, it's a masterpiece. They should have included The Button as well.
I hope Johns has something up his sleeve to save the current DC continuity because it's going to destroy the company if they keep going in the same direction.

    To: My Fav Uncanny Friend,
This was one of your best non-spoiler reviews. I’ve watched other Absolute Doomsday Clock reviews,
your’s is by far the most thorough.
I’d just walked into my Apt. put up my jacket, and was taking my flannel off…the iPad set on my desk playing this Eps. of NMC. I didn’t need to ook at the screen, just listen to your voice set the scene and describe this Absolute Edition. I personally thought it would have served Geoff John’s better, to have stayed away from the JLA Movie, Hollywood, and all the drama that created several years ago.
This, by your description, is the Geoff John’s I’d hoped would come back to Writing Comics.
I’ve read Geiger, and Junkyard Joe, both with Gary Frank on pencils. They are in perfect synch, a Writer/Penciler Creative team reminiscent of Chris Claremont, John Byrne, and Terry Austin. Or, Roy Thomas and John Buscema, and Ernie Chan. Even though I rarely buy monthly-single floppy comics, I may have to make an exception for his upcoming JSA, and “Junkyard Joe” which is published through Image.
I’m looking forward to reading the Absolute Three Jokers book, in early 2023. I’ve not read it. I’ve heard some people disliked it, yet - one of the traits that though not solely his, Geoff John’s has mastered, is creating Scripts..characters…plot-lines that interlock into what later turns into a Tapestry. For anyone in doubt, please treat yourself to the three Green Lantern Omnibus that are still available and in print.
Most of which were written and/or Plotted by Geoff John’s. Besides his three JSA Omnibus set, in my humble view, it was Geoff John’s MAGNUM OPUS. When it comes to creative writing, comics, or otherwise - I’m here for that type of Writing, all day, every day.
Btw, I originally started watching this review several days ago…in between then and now, I ordered from CheapGraphicNovels.com, both Absolute Watchmen and Absolute Doomsday Clock. Both of which arrived last Friday.
Next purchase? Absolute Three Jokers in early 2023.
Thank you again, for the insightful FUN Review.
To Mr. Geoff John’s, may he Live Long, Prosper, and Write..!!
    I’ll be here for it!!
Best Regards to you and Astonishing Melanie,
    ⚡️Art Of Business ⚡️. ( formerly known as ) - ⚡️KidFlash⚡️
    (Ps)
I’m curious if you’ll review and/or recommend the Tom King ROSACH HC. I’m not a big fan of Tom King, but I’m curious about it. If you did review it, please send me a link to that particular video.

I want this story so bad. I have to stick to my only omnis and deluxe edtion rule though. They need to make this a deluxe too. I'm actually ok with DC playing arond in the Watchmen universe. I know there is a rotten backstory to how they own the rights but it's theirs. Having said that they should only go there with really amazing stories and as little as often. The Before Watchmen sereies were not that good. Imagine if DC had put all that creative talent into the original Charlton characters. Take care and peace everyone.

The comic started strong and then became another sloppy story blaming the darker DC stories on Watchmen, removing the ambiguity of the ending, messing with its continuity. Not one of Geoff's finest moments but Gary's art is phenomenal.

  • @AndDeathForAll82
    @AndDeathForAll82 10 หลายเดือนก่อน

To me, this is the end of my DC, along with Dark Nights Metal. I love them both, and I love how Doomsday Clock ignores everything Bendis did to Superman and his family.
It was the perfect ending for me. The stuff that happened after these stories just really turned me off. I’m ok with that, since I still have a lot more to read and collect from DC between 1986 and 2019. I guess I had to stop somewhere.
With Superman being my favorite character, I can’t think of a better ending to what John Byrne started after Crisis.
To me, it isn’t even about Watchmen. It’s about Superman, and it’s kind of meta, really. Dr. Manhattan is trying to deconstruct the DC Universe the same way Alan Moore did with superheroes in general… and continuously arrives at the same conclusion no matter how he moves the pieces. Superman is hope, and there are things even Dr. Manhattan cannot deconstruct. Johns using Manhattan to basically create every single DC era by trying to figure out wtf is up with Superman was just brilliant. When looked at closely, it’s really the Crisis event of all Crisis events.

For me, Watchmen hasn’t aged well and I really don’t like his portrayal of women not just in Watchmen but across his other works as well.
