What makes this story worthwhile is the clash between Dr. Manhattan and Superman. Throughout Manhattan questions if he should go through with the eventual battle between the two since Superman could possibly kill him and if Manhattan should instead destroy everything before that happens. Manhattan as a man who gained the power of a God with little to no hope for humanity is eventually ideologically humbled by the alien with a power of a God that became humanity's hope.
Yes. Clark Kent is a good man with the power of a god. He would still be that good man even without the power. Alan Moore created Dr Manhattan as a Superman who doesn't care about us, but that just isn't Superman. Chesterton wrote, 'We cannot be expected to have any regard for a great creature if he does not in any manner conform to our standards. For unless he passes our standard of greatness we cannot even call him great. Nietszche summed up all that is interesting in the Superman idea when he said, "Man is a thing which has to be surpassed." But the very word "surpass" implies the existence of a standard common to us and the thing surpassing us. If the Superman is more manly than men are, of course they will ultimately deify him, even if they happen to kill him first. But if he is simply more supermanly, they may be quite indifferent to him as they would be to another seemingly aimless monstrosity. He must submit to our test even in order to overawe us. Mere force or size even is a standard; but that alone will never make men think a man their superior. Giants, as in the wise old fairy-tales, are vermin. Supermen, if not good men, are vermin.' Dr Manhattan is just vermin.
That really disappointing that they didn’t have any dc character stick in the story, instead of just appearing for a moment and then leave. Amazing video as always
Very good review. I enjoyed Doomsday clock overall. I don't actually view it as a Watchmen sequel. I view it as a Superman comic for adults with Watchmen characters. It was Geoff Johns way of addressing the damage books like Watchmen have done to the comic book medium by being so dark and gritty. He tried it before in Infinite Crisis but Doomsday Clock was a lot better. He wanted to show more light and hope in superhero comics. Even Alan Moore seems to want to distance himself from Watchmen when you look what he had written for superhero comics in the 90's and early 2000's. 1963 Wildcats Supreme Tom Strong
The way I've reconciled "Watchmen" is by using the DC Multiverse. There are three universes, the Regular DC Universe, the Watchmen Universe, and the Watchmen Universe involving "Doomsday Clock". With the Watchmen Universe, "Watchmen" ended where it originally ended and we won't know what happened to the world in the universe. With the Watchmen Universe involving "Doomsday Clock", its identical to the Watchmen Universe except that the story continued in "Doomsday Clock".
I think you're missing the point. It wasn't a cash grab or an unnecessary sequel. It was Geoff Johns trying to restore the DC Universe after the disastrous New52 that was extremely unpopular. Instead of a regular Crisis event all the changes were blamed Doctor Manhattan's meddling with the timeline. As such, I think it worked very well until Didio screwed up Rebirth as well. As a story to itself, I found it intriguing & love Gary Frank's art. Except for the glacial pace it was published at I loved it. Sadly, the current editorial staff are making an even bigger mess of things. Barring a total shutdown & destroying the current timeline I don't hold out hope for most of DC.
@@OrangeGeemer It started off well, but sales plummeted after a couple of years. In the end everything but Batman & Green Lantern tanked. This was an attempt to right the ship. There are so many omnis because at this time they were publishing 52 titles.
It might have been better if Johns wasn’t chief creative officer at the time. He just didn’t have the bandwidth for such a big project. You can tell exactly when he stepped down, because the final issues of the series are so much better than what came before.
@@mitch-TO He did have a lot of irons in the fire at the time but in the end, I thought that overall, it was good. It will be interesting to see what future readers think about it. Those folks will get to read it in one setting. I hope I'm around to get their feedback. Thanks for the reply.
@@williamjackson6705 Every restart, revamp or relaunch in comics lost steam after a few issues. The New 52 jumpstarted the whole american comics and remained with good sales for 5 years before they gave in to dc fans that are demanding to go back to the old status quo where their favorites are present in the DC universe. People have short memories.
While I didn't like the story of this or three jokers the art in both are amazing I am still deciding if i am going to get the absolute or not just for the art. I think if they had stuck to there guns and this was canon and the future of dc it wouldn't be bad. I think Alan Moore said that Geoff Johns seems to just be copying his work without understanding the meaning behind them and nothing makes me agree with that more than three jokers and the recent flashpoint beyond
The hubris of Geoff Johns to try and pack a continuity and universal reboot into a watchman sequel is just astounding to me. Taking the piss on watchman's message as well is just hilarious to me. While I found the art mostly pretty good. This story is just a convoluted and pointless waste of time.
It is not hubris at all. Dr Manhattan is the only character that can totally do this with his powers, and someone that Superman can convince him to do it if it is for the best. He is also the only character whose powers could have messed things up this simply.
Cash grab on the success of past glories. Whats next.. UKs Batman Inc characters vs V for Vendetta? All you need from Watchmen is in Watchmen, no prequels, no sequels, just Watchment.
Late to the party.. but I gotta say I enjoyed this story very much. I had the pleasure of reading it in a few sessions and didn't have to wait 2 years for the entire run. I understood after a few issues that it was already an altered timeline and how it would be streamlined had me curious. Whatever DOOMSDAY CLOCK was intended to be, I liked how Superman is portrayed as the most important character in DC and I don't always agree with Alan Moore..but Geoff Johns in his own right is a hell of a writer. Watchmen for me is the most brilliant GN of all time, and though not my favorite.. any story that expands on that universe, I'm game. Dr. MANHATTAN is a fantastic and unique tragic character and from what I gather..he could not manipulate his timeline so he never becomes Doc Manhattan. He just wanted an ending to his existence. 🤜🏼🤛🏼
I personally liked doomsday clock it was a really interesting story and tons of fun the only problem I had with story was well it never got a chance to affect the Dc universe post dc rebirth like originally planned but that’s just my opinion.
Super enjoyed Doomsday clock, divisive opinion but moreso than Watchmen😯Love the art, incredible detail. Mine and marionette definitely stole the show. Doomsday Clock is a good Sequel to Watchmen but a great Superman story. Had a hopeful aspect that not a lot of comics have thesedays. Liked how it blended the two without affecting the other too much. I want a sequel.😎 The first half dragged. Probably cause I collected these in single issues and took over 2 years to read them all(but have that cool lenticular cover for issue 1) So Definitely due a reread altogether this year. Great review.😁
Comedian is Watchmen’s Paragon of Nihilism, so it would make some sense that he would have both have no reason to be there, and die no matter what the outcome. It fits, even if maybe they could have done something else with him 😆
5:49 Why do you even talk about how things "are supposed to be" if you don't even know anything? This reminds me of *morons* that were sending death threats to John Byrne because he made Ma and Pa Kent to be alive in Superman's adulthood in 1986, because Ma and Pa Kent being alive was supposed to be Superboy's continuity and when they both die of old age (actually alien plant) as he grows up and he is SuperMAN now. Or there never was Superboy period (original Superman). Regardless, the main thing Superman = no Kents, nothing holds him back to Smallville farm. Then in new52, 25 years later, DC once again Kill both Kents before Clark becomes Superman. _New_ generation of *morons* on forums = "DC making Superman so much like Batman!"

Not an actual sequel to Watchmen but a bold declaration in a time of depressing cynicism.
"Superman is cool and the Watchmen universe needs one."
So in the nutshell I didn't miss that much by skiping it. Great video as always.
