  • Tami from Nutmegnotebook.com used an unfinished 15 inch wooden bowl in her Chopped Salad demo. it required a bit of maintenance before it is put to use and some ongoing care to allow many years of service. This short video will review what is necessary. The beeswax/mineral oil blend treated bowls that come directly from Holland bowl company will still need the ongoing monthly treatment but are ready to use on arrival
    Materials used.....
    Wooden Bowl: can be ordered from Holland Bowl Mil. The bowl in the video is the 15 inch untreated Beech Wood Bowl we purchased from Amazon.

    Thank you Tom! It’s nice to find you on the other side of the camera. I’ve had a Holland bowl for several years, but don’t use it mainly because I wasn’t sure how to clean and care for it. You answered all my questions so I can now begin using it.

    Thanks for the video Tom! I received my Holland Mill bowl last week and oiled it this morning with mineral oil per your video. I had a great chopped salad today. It totally filled me up but didn’t slow me down. I made a quick dressing out of Dijon mustard, Napa Valley grand reserve balsamic, and bensons table tasty.

      Yes! Feeling Full but not sluggish is such a great feeling after eating one off our chopped salad meals. Never got that feeling on the old SAD way of eating!

    Hi, I just bought the bowl you recommended. I wrote Nutmeg Notebook in the notes so they will know how I found out about it. I am excited to receive it and start using it. I already have the knife you use. Now I just have to make sure to cut safely and not slice my thumb!! :)

    Once you do all that, how do you store them long term? Wrap them in paper? Plastic?

    Thank you for posting this… Five years ago? Anyway, I have a question so hop?efully you’re still monitoring your Comments. Have you ever used a wooden bowl to eat something hot like soup or beef stew or curry…? I am wondering how the mineral oil holds up in terms of not allowing penetration of the food into the wood when the wood is warm.

    Hi Tom is that mineral oil food safe that you get from the drugstore? Or is that a special brand ?

    • @NutmegNotebook
      @NutmegNotebook  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      it is labeled "food grade" mineral oil.

    Can you use a stainless steel bowl instead?

    • @NutmegNotebook
      @NutmegNotebook  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      No you don't want to chop in a SS bowl, it will ruin the bowl and your chopping device.

    Mineral oil is petroleum based?? If it is, you should not be consuming that...maybe cocunut oil or olive oil might be better? Thank you.

      Thank you Anita, This is a much discussed area of concern. The manufacturer strongly recommends not using typical cooking oils as they will go rancid in the wood and ruin the bowl, The idea of the mineral oil or the bee's wax mineral oil blend the the manufacturer uses is to soak into the wood and stay there, Below is a link to a vegan option that does use a highly refined coconut oil and citrus oil. They state that is does not go rancid. We will be checking it out and will do an update.

      Hello Dave and Liz, this is Tom . The mineral oil soaks into the wood and does not transfer to the salad, When treating the bowl I do a final wipe down with a dry paper towel to remove any excess. Thanks for asking, I actually had thought about mentioning that (and forgot) --- as we follow a whole food plant based diet with NO added oil, salt or sugars.

    I am a bit surprised anyone would chop anything in a deep bowl rather than on a chopping board.

    Thank you for the video. I don't know if you are checking the March 2022 UWL bundle videos, so I reposted my question here about the dip or unzipped bowl when I order. "We are WFPBNSOS, following Dr. Esselstyn, Chef AJ, you & Tom, Dr. Gregar. So yes we are vegan whole food plant based no oil, salt & sugar. When I order my bowl, do I get it with or without the dipped at the HBM factory BeesWax / oil dip? I will order the wax & buy mineral oil at my pharmacy...then follow Tom's video for keeping the bowl oiled. But initially when I order it, do I get it dipped or undipped by telling them I'm vegan and to leave off their dip? What did you have put, or not put, on your salad chopping bowls please? Thank you!"
