    The biggest problem I have with the crown store is how predatory it is to new players. People already commented how easy it is to get a vampire or werewolf bite for free in game if you just know where or think to ask. And there are plenty of things overpriced for how easy they are to get for free. I tell most people that are interested to avoid buying crowns and if they enjoy the game to just sub for all the DLC content and the craft bag since they give you $15 worth of crowns with each monthly sub. Then you can blow your crowns on whatever or save it up for something actually useful like a banker or merchant or DLC areas you want to have always available.
    I've played subscription based games before and I enjoy ESO enough to treat it like one cuz I find it nearly unplayable otherwise. I'm with you on removing key features to make premium being some bullshit.

    • @KartalinESO
      @KartalinESO 2 ปีที่แล้ว +26

      Underrated comment. Honestly there's so much you can find in the game for no additional real money/crowns. Buying the first pack upgrade (let alone any, though the price does scale up) is just painful to watch because it's like 800 gold from the npc pack merchant. 800 gold is a pittance in this game, even if you're relatively new. The big January login reward (like 20 days of logging in daily) was 100,000 gold. Players are generally helpful in zone chat if they don't think you're trolling, minus the occasional number of people that will troll you. But 99.99% of players will tell you how to avoid the crown store if there is a way around it, because we all know it's terrible.
      For context I've played and subscribed since the 2014 launch.

    • @immatoll4375
      @immatoll4375 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      I do not really understand why anyone ever should buy crowns before looking into the game (or store). It takes 10 minutes to realize that the store is mostly optional and more like a "reward system" for the ESO+ subscription model. ESO is a subscription based game with a big extended "trial". But you can theoretically play the trial even endlessly because of the more horizontal focussed progression + champion/paragon system. And if you want to play the game only for the base game, dungeons, veteran base dungeons / raids and all the story from the 3 alliances... damn this all will take 300-1000 hours alone if you are a real TES player and enjoy the dialogues etc.

    I played ESO consistently for years. I personally found the subscription a pretty decent deal for myself who played so consistently. I didn't get it for the first few months and had no problems, but once I wanted to get into crafting, the subscription was a must. Most of the houses that are always in the crown store can be bought with gold. And for the housing, you can place your mounts and pets like furnishings, and even set them on paths to walk around your house. And you can make a dock with furnishings yourself down in the ocean. The vampirism and lycanthropy both can be given for free by other players. There no P2W parts to the crown store, it's either pay for convenience or cosmetic.
    Though you spending crowns on many of these things show how the crown store is predatory towards people who don't know better.

    I'm glad someone bigger than me is putting a spotlight on how insane the monetization for this game is.
    Usually you expect a company to only single dip when it comes to monetization, with the worst of the worst like EA being expected to double dip at worst.
    What I mean is, you either have a f2p game with microtransactions, a paid game without microtransactions, or sometimes a f2p game with a premium semi-required subscription, those are "single dip". Then you have a paid game with microtransacitons, and that's the double dip.
    ESO is the TRIPLE DIP. It's a paid game, with paid expansions, with a semi-required subscription, with microtransactions. It's insane, actually insane and nothing comes close.

    • @steel5897

      "Other MMOs are the same!" No they are not. WoW and FF14 are both double dip games, paid content and a sub, they do not have any gameplay microtransactions of any kind beyond the controversial level boost purchase. You can't, however, gain any advantage on them with real money in any way, and they definitely don't lock vital game mechanics out if you don't pay extra, like ESO does.

    Potions, Foods, Drinks, and Soul Gems are all cheap and plentiful in the game and do not require cash shop purchases.
    If something is not listed as account-wide, assume it is per-character. (Yes, especially bag space and bank slots, which can also be unlocked without spending a cent, but the higher ranks cost a ridiculous amount of Septims.)
    There are DLC and Chapters. DLC are smaller, more frequent content drops that may add just a single zone, and a pack of dungeons, and Chapters are just the Expansions, those are money only, no crowns. The DLC will always have a steep discount on their respective release anniversaries, as well.
    Consumables from the Crown Crates can be exchanged for extra Crown Gems from by opening the Gem Extraction menu from the Crown Crate overlay.
    Also Crowns are not at a ratio of 100 to $1, and the cost of Crown shop items will always leave you with slightly too little to buy anything else without buying more crowns.

    The game is full price.
    It's also pay-to-play.
    it also has a premium subscription.
    It also has microtransactions.
    Yeah, nah.
    Indeed many games have some of that, but not all.
    You find free to play games with a premium subscription that mostly removes tedium. Like faster leveling, more inventory space, shorter dungeon cooldowns, etc.
    You find free to play games with microtransactions. They sell stuff like inventory slots, exp multipliers, more character slots, etc. But with the good ones you don't need any of that and still have a good time. They can be played just fine without spending, but putting money in adds convenience. You pay because you want to, not because you have to.
    There are many MMOs with a pay-to-play subscription. Not as many as there used to be, but WoW is an example of an MMO that holds onto that method.
    Some combine it. Like Destiny 2 where you buy the game and the DLC, but have no subscription. You can play most of the game without additional cost. But it has a season pass, including a premium version that adds more stuff.
    Apex Legends also has a season pass, but the rewards from the premium version give more premium currency than it costs to buy a season. So you buy once, and as long as you play enough, you never have to buy premium again.

    Don't understand why people bitch about Skyrim re-releases when ESO has one of the most expensive, expansive, and aggressive store I have ever seen in games.
    ESO is NOT, TES.

    "Its literally just gambling, you might say it isnt but to me it is"
    No, Micky, it LITERALLY is. You're paying a Khajit real money for him to shuffle a deck of cards and lay down a hand for you. Then you lift the cards and either win or lose depending on random chance.
    Except you can't win. You liteally cannot win, because none of the items have any value whatsoever. At least with online Poker you have the chance to get money back out of it when the cards favor you.

    There's a lot of the store that is paying for convenience. The assistants can be summoned anywhere and used by players in your group, between the merchant and banker you can practically remove the need for visiting towns.

    • @boobalooba5786
      @boobalooba5786 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Which seems stupid to me since "going" to town is just a teleport and doesn't take any time. Maybe it would make sense if this were EverQuest and travel was actually a game mechanic instead of a lie.

      Another way to describe it: the game is designed to be inconvenient so they can sell you stuff.

    One of the Zenimax guys who works on the team that does the art designs for ESO and namely the lootboxes came to our school during a career day thing. I of course realised he was on zenimax and not Bethesda but i still made sure to be a annoying little shit and asked him at least 3 times when TES6 is coming out. He just looked at me with the despair of someone who wanted to design art for games as a dream, but got assigned to loot boxes.

  • @TheDKing67

    Microtransactions should be shamed and not normalized, the amount of content and often useless content that's created just to squeeze a little money out of dedicated fans is genuinely disgusting and scummy.

    pointless fact the first instance of a microtransaction that i could find was from an arcade game in 1990 called Double Dragon 3: The Rosetta Stone in which there was an in game store that you could purchase things from using the correct amount of quarters.
    unless you consider buying health using quarters a micro transaction then i think 1985's gauntlet would have been the first i think (i could very much be wrong)

    There is never a reason to EVER buy crowns from the store. The game has an optional active monthly subscription (like WoW) with ESO+ and the crown system is mostly designed as a reward-system for people having an active subscription. If you buy the base game (5 EUR) you mostly get acess to a huge trial version of the game (like in WoW without a monthly subscription). With ESO+ you get access to all content till the last addon (like WoW with a subscription but without buying dragon flight). And with buying the last addon additionally and eso+ active you get the full access (like buying WoW dragon flight and have a subscription). But besides WoW you get rewarded with monthly crowns via ESO+ with that you can in theory buy out all the old dlcs back without the need of a subscription. Or you spend it for comfort stuff / decoration / customization. It is mostly a reward system. If people buy additional crowns it's their own choice. In my opinion this system ist pretty fair for an MMORPG these days compared to games like WoW that does not deliver anything rewarding for actually paying. When your subscription ends your characters are locked and also all you buy from cosmetic shop or boosts only costs additional money. So complaining about microtransaction here is pretty unfair.

    The best thing to do is probably pay for a month of Eso plus and rush through all the dlc main story quests if you have the time but I would suggest just playing the free base story quests with the alliances and the coldharbour planemeld.

    My theory is that 2 companies made this game. The first one made a really good game and sent it to zenimax, then the big Z got a 2nd team to absolutely fuck it up.

    Honestly in my own opinion the best thing you can buy is the helper followers, yeah they do everything that's already free in game but I like being able to stop mid-whatever and sell, decon, fence, and then put the rest in my bank. There's a few other things less gratifying that I bought too but I believe the followers really helped enhance my experience, I also got them all over a span of like 2 years so I don't feel like I dumped to much to fast and have got their worth out of it.

    "Every other MMO has this" I mean... I don't think that's even necessarily true. Most of the MMOs that are considered rivals to or greater than ESO that I know of don't have a store half as predatory.
