Picked up a 2017 version today after eyeing off the MT10 for months. This review had a major role in that. The issue was finally forced yesterday when my 2004 R1 coolant pump started pissing everywhere.
You might be pleased to know that the weird "std, A, B" is now "1, 2, 3", and works off the same semantics as as the TCS: 1 is "danger mode" - least dampened throttle and least TCS input, 3 is "safe mode" - softest throttle and most TCS input.

I bought my MT10 new at launch and owned 2 years after my R1M , LOVED IT!!! ZERO issues in 2 years! As far as wind issues. I'm 6' tall, the little deflector in front of the gauge deflects it up over my shoulders and helmet great. A lot of money went into developing that. But also ducking behind the little screen blocks a TON of wind over 140mph! It's great! First thing I did was put frame sliders and spool sliders on, then within a week was a decat pipe to let it sing and 100% was the best mod, that sound is SO epic with no cat!!! The amount of air it brings in with that huge ass airbox and cat removed with the different tune and torque form the R1 it is SO throaty and LOUD! The Factory exhaust is SO quiet I'd get people turning into my lane on the highway daily until I swapped that. It's also NOT unbearable for touring with no cat. I did 1,200 mile trips with no bother of sound. For sure do the swap!!!

Here's a list of must do mods for MT10 buyers! I bought mine at the launch in 2017 (US) owned it 2 years, did 1,200 trips, tracked it, commuted daily in 110 degrees to below zero and snow in Utah, 2up riding, canyon carving , terror rides in a big group of sport bikes. Here's my mist buys in order. Ps 2 years NOT ONE ISSUE OR PROBLEM!
First buy a set of frame sliders and spools
Second DanMoto decat pipe ($140 as opposed to $375 termignoni that does the same thing same hp gains) the cat is extremely heavy and sheds TONs of weight removing! Removing the exhaust flap motor and cables removes a hair BUT, leaving them on the Ecu still thinks it working so there's no engine codes thrown, still operates the cables and u jsut tuck them to a perfect spot ontop of the swingarm there's a sink spot where they rest protected. U can also then swap the cat back on if needed easily. Word is re-routing the cables is near impossible.
Do NOT waste $ on an end can, the end can IS Titanium (from the R1) u don't loose weight going aftermarket, and the exit diameter of internal pipe is a big as anything out there and t looks good. Get the sound of a full system for a $140 cat delete pipe u can install yourself.
If wanting a hair more hp, Next buy a race filter for that huge ass intake.
Then simply and easily remove the ecu and mail it to NelsTune , tell them u did a cat delete, race filter and your elevation and they'll flash it with the best map for your build, mail it back, takes 4 days total before u have it back, it smoothed the throttle. I gained 2mpg, with the filter , decat and tune I was at 178.5hp at the crank! That's better the superduke and Tuono 1100 power and cost u $140+$90+$350=$580!!! $580 for 18+hp can't get a slip on for that let alone 18whp!!
With the added power to EBC replacement brake pads , makes a world of difference, don't waste the money on brembo systems my buddy with same bike did a Brembo full upgrade to his and said at the track he couldn't tell a difference in braking between mine and his, and cost a fortune less.
If buying a 2016(Europe) or 2017 FZ10 US, buy the $210 US GYTR quickshifter!! Didn't come stock on 2017's but did 2018-up. It's the same one Yamaha uses by Factory so no voiding warranties and works seamlessly.
If tracking , go to a dealer or pro shop and have them set the suspension settings to your weight and riding type , it's cheap and takes a lot of guess work out of it. It's all easily adjustable but infinite possibilities and combinations , jsut have a pro set it.
Another only or hard canyon carving get a set of rearsets to raise a bit on track days.
Next if u need it get the comfort seat if touring , it's nice and cheap. I never did it and was fine. I'm 6' 165lbs, thin with no ass and was fine in 1,200 mile trips.
I personally liked my set of breakaway adjustable shortly levers over stock
I really liked the supermoto hand guards , takes the sting out of winter riding and filtering saved my hand a time or two.
If buying a wind screen there are several that don't get rid of the Factory flap and visor which looks cool and serves a purpose, go that route but at 6' tall the little 1 inch fin deflects the air over my shoulders and helmet well enough that I never bothered . U can tuck jsut like a sports bike and get good protection.
Last thing I'd say, shop around!! In the US these were a lot more expensive than Europe. (9,999 Europe and $13,999 US) I shopped around pre launch and got mine in the US out of state from a Yamaha/Ktm dealer in California for $9,200!!!!! NEW!!! 4 miles! $3,700 BELOW MSRP NO DEALER FEES, NO RESTOCK FEES, NO BUILD FEES, and being in utah no taxes from that dealer! I paid $9,200 OUT THE DOOR + $175 to ship it enclosed trailer to Utah! Registered it in my dual residency state of Arizona where there's no taxes so it cost me $120 of registration fees plus the $9,375 and in the end added $10,075 TOTAL , COMPLETELY MODED tastefully with no warranty voiding mods!!! That's a crossplane 4 , R1 derived Supernaked ,..not base naked like a gsxs1000 or a cb1000r or z1000,..the MT10 is the ONLY Japanese Supernaked , that's straight from the proffesionals mouths, type in Supernaked comparison and you'll see the MT10 but none of the others and it wins some of the biggest shootouts in 2016-2017! Was bike of the year 2016 and 2017 in almost every publication and show. So a bike that runs with Superdukes and Tuono factories but is $8,500 LESS!!! That's nearly HALF THE PRICE of a new Superduke or Tuono Factory !! Does it have ohlins or brembos , no, does it come stock with 175hp? No (it's 160) BUT bone stock it out accelerates 0-60mph ANY productions bike on earth, even the superduke and Tuono, (0-60mph of 2.5 seconds) it has more torque than its R1 brother and gets it Much much lower in the revs, it's a Yamaha so most reliable brand on earth 6 years running, crossplane 4 has the longest mileage lifespan of the 1000's to date in testing by Mobile 1. It kept up with an beat in some tests the exotic hyoernakeds and did in in stock trim and at half the cost ! That was PRE-MT10 SP with electronic Ohlins etc, that says a lot! Yamaha has the largest dealer network on earth , parts are dirt cheap and so much being taken from the R1 there's ample parts available. Full 2 year Factory warranty . Dirt cheap to insure! MY R1M as a 40 year old was $165/month, MT10 $38. Now several years out it's the most overlooked bike and one of the best! Of 13 bikes , all superbikes I've owned, this Supernaked is the most versatile , reliable and fun bike I've had!!!
If a beginner, go mt07 then go mt09 and then MT10 and when u get the MT10 leave it in standard mode and TC1 with wheelie control on till u got it. It has more torque than the R1, gets it low , shorter wheel base. Down 2 teeth , and retuned, upright with a flat bar,.= POWER wheelies 1-4th and 5th with flash. if experienced rider from superbikes, get it, do the mods, have a 179hp Supernaked R1 built to the hilt for $10,000 that's insanely reliable and will run head to head the hyper euro exotics that run $20,000+ out the door! Donit at half the cost! I've seen used 2017 fz10's modded with low mileage for sale for $7,500!!??? It's a no brainer! If making he change from superbikes to "more comfortable bike" buy for for $7,500,..you won't be disappointed!
I personally am waiting for the next version, Ducatis 228hp v4 Streetfighter comming is changing the game. Aprilias Tuono is following in hp, BMWs single R, Ktm altering based on the rc8 and engender Kawasaki with the h2 supercharged naked version . Rumor has it yamaha is following with a big upgrade in power via some R1 cp4 internals , ecu goods, that will boost it to current R1 power 200+ for the MT10 , it already has the capability of 6 axis IMU, they jsut pulled it to save $ SO will have the IMU with corner ABs etc, brake upgrade, color TFT dash from the R1, and rumors of ohlins as standard. We know the SP will be insane but a lot of this gens tech trickling down to base model and a price tag much cheaper than $24,000 Ducatis. I'm getting a 2018 or used modded '17 to hold over and then next gen MT10 for 2021!
I still laugh at the "BIG" TH-cam motovloggers and publications that urged people to NOT buy the MT10 it's first 2 years saying it was a "NEW" bike and "likely to have huge issues" lol as I said from day 1,..Yamaha has had the crossplane 4 down since 2009!!! It's proven, changing some Titanium internals to steel to save $ but moreso because the rev redline and top speed did NOT require Titanium for strength , we knew it would be an even more reliable powerpleant. It was also 85% R1 , also proven , there was no way it could fail and it didn't , one of yamahas greats! So thanks to those guys for saying that and shying some buyers away so I could get a $9,200 out the door new MT10! Lol
If you've never rode one, do yourself a favor and try it before spending double or developing an opinion! Amazing bike! Comfortbly ride to the track with cruise, on tighter track layouts I ran better times than my R1M once i modded the FZ10, pulls out the hole like a freight train! Nimble as all get out, the ho increase and removal of governor with flash has you not far off superbikes on the straights , but your make up time on the rest the track. I wish we had gotten European pricing on the MT10 but u CAN find them that cheap , just look around. Don't pay full price! Locally there's still dealers with new 2017's ! That's what u want! They'll bargain , add a quickshifter on them and walk out the door with full warranty at a fraction of cost!

      The Architect
I just picked up a nicely modded 2018 MT10 with 3500 miles for $8500, private party.
Was coming off of a KTM Super Duke GT that I had a minor accident on and the insurance company totaled.
Was nervous about any bike leaving me wanting more after the 1290 engine. The first week/300 miles ended that and has me loving this bike more than the GT.
Seat of the pants: (SDGT was stock and MT10 has a cat delete and ECU flash) Under 5k rpm the MT10 pulls harder, 5k-8k the SDGT does but not by much, 8k to redline no discernible difference.
But hands down the MT10 handles better than the GT (it is probably 50-60 lbs lighter with the mods than the stock GT though).
MT10 suspension was set up for track riding by the previous owner (about 10 lbs lighter than me) and does have an R1 rear shock.
      Mods:
      Brand New Tires
Ftecu Flash with auto blip and quick shifter (clutchless up and down shifting)
      Titanium scorpion Cat delete
      R1 oem rearsets (stock included)
Rizoma handlebar clamps (lower than stock)
      Seat cowl
      Rear passenger peg delete plates
      R1 rear shock (stock included)
R1 front and rear brake master cylinders
Vortex brake and MZS clutch levers
      Rhino bar ends
Trex frame sliders and engine covers
      Radiator and oil cooler covers
      Tech Spec tank pads
      CRG bar end mirrors
      Front and rear axle sliders
      Rear spools
Fender eliminator and integrated tail light
Brand new chain and sprockets (vortex sprockets and EK3d chain)

Can confirm MT-10 is ok on a rainy morning in November, also works well at Donnington Park. Like the R1 the MT drinks petrol. The charger is really useful. Had to replace the fins at the back because my short 5ft 10 inch frame manged to kick them off. They are cheap though if a little bit of a pain to replace.

Can’t wait to see what the new MT10 looks like. I almost traded in my 2019 CB1000R for a 2021 MT10 but the guy told me a new version might be coming out in 2022. Fingers crossed 🤞🏽. I’m really excited for 2022. I’ve got my bike paid off and $5,000 saved up. I’ll put 2k twords the down payment with my trade in and have like $80 monthly payments and put the rest of the money twords a tune and exhaust system. I’m so excited for 2022 I can’t stop watching MT10 videos.

I had one of these 2 years, same color, best and most fun bike I've EVER owned! Oh and most reliable and problem free, oh and a 100% must,...put a Cat delete y-pipe on it and it sounds like a Moto GP bike no joke! It's unreal! That cat makes it so quiet and crap! It's the only Japanese Supernaked , competes with the superduke and tuono and literally half the price! $18k for a superduke and tuono factory , $9,250 I paid for mine new! I sold it after 2 glorious years a month ago and am buying another one I loved it that much!
If ya want Tuono Factory performance, put EBC brake pads, have the suspension set by a professional to more of a track feel (it's fully adjustable) put a Y-pipe and race filter and then do a NelsTune reflash and you get 182 hp out of it! Cheap upgrades that will run nose to nose with the ultimate supernakeds, at half the price!

out quick I bought mine In The '17 launch when it was called the FZ10 . 👌 got the greatest deal in MT10 history lol new bike in us , at launch, $12,999 plus all fees MSRP with dealers marking them up for some reason, got mine 4 miles on it for $9,200 , no dealer fees, set up fees, restock fees, doc fees , full warranty! Jsut cost me $140 to have the dealer in California ship it to me in utah! The dealer in Cali ordered 12 for the launch by the launch they had no money down on any SO to keep dealer allotment high they dumped 2 grey /fleur at that deal! I sold mine 2 years later with 5k miles for $1500 more than I paid. 👌

out quick why did you go from a modded MT07 to a gsxs1000? ?? MT10 would have been natural for you? PLUS crossplane 4 sounds over standard I-4 , more hp and torque , looks better, better components. Quicker , bike of the yearaccross the board 2017, and the only Japanese Supernaked. Every Supernaked test for 2017-up has had the MT10 included and every stand group test. Comparison has had been Missing he MT10 becaue it's the Supernaked class.

I've got a Crossplane R1 which has the choppy throttle issue. However, its only really when you ride in town and you soon get used to it and ride round it. Only a very minor issue really as the rest of the bike is superb. Compared to some of the other bikes I have owned if that's the biggest issue you can find, its not bad really....Same with the brakes, stick some braided hoses on?

When I bought my Tracer, the dealer said only 1 light is on cos both on looks like a car further away and can make cars pull out on you. Sounds like BS to me. Bike mechanic I know says it's easy enough to wire it so both are on whilst retaining the full beam flash but I'm not that bothered.

Hi BVG, if you happen to see this comment hope you can reply. Could you share any observations you have about the MT-10 dumping engine heat on the rider - legs, feet, crotch. It's tough to find an exiting inline-4 motorcycle that doesn't bake your legs with heat from the radiator and engine. Thanks bud, love your vids!

021200zzr I have this bike and yes, in city traffic it radiates heat like crazy onto your legs and feet. Not unbearable though. I also live in the desert and it routinely gets over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

Must be closest to the S1000R being an IL4 and ball park pricing? No semi-active but is it poorer for that? Tricked up for touring like the 1290GT the range must be the biggest issue. Cool bike though and worthy of the MT crown.

    • @BaronVonGrumble
      @BaronVonGrumble  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

yeah, its the closest rival IMO. I actually prefer the suspension on this to the previous s1kr (not ridden new s1kr) as it felt a bit vague and detached. Yes, range will suck but lets face it, after 120 miles on a holiday you want to stop for a piss anyway

    • @BobKramer
      @BobKramer 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

I'm 5'7" too....and I believe stock this bike will be VERY tall. I have an 02 FZ-1 with a Corbin seat and it is fine. This is nearly 2" taller than my FZ-1 and to me, would be uncomfortable around town. I'd need to see how they lower the height for it to be a consideration. Overall I love this bike!!

I was attracted to this vehicle before and after release but have now warmed more to the Suzuki GSXS1000. It just seems like it'd be a better out of the box day to day bike for a lot of reasons and apparently is slightly more powerful across the rev range with both torque and hp. Could probably just change the sprockets on it if you want more power wheelie action too. Much cheaper where I live as well. I prefer the look of the yamaha over the suzuki but I know which one I'd prefer to clean. If I got the Tuono or the KTM they'd probably just be stolen or sat on by every person who walks past.
