  • Each fall, mushroom enthusiasts flock to rainy Girdwood to pick all the choice edibles they can eat. But some hunters would prefer their favorite mushroom patches be kept quiet.
    Kate Mohatt is an ecologist and one of Girdwood's local mushroom experts. She shares tips on how to avoid poisonous mushrooms on a fungai hunt, and how to enjoy one of the northern-most mushrooming destinations in the world.
    INDIE ALASKA is an original video series produced by Alaska Public Media in partnership with PBS Digital Studios. The videos capture the diverse and colorful lifestyles of everyday Alaskans at work and at play. Together, these stories present a fresh and authentic look at living in Alaska.

    Though I live in the dryer central interior of Alaska, the information you’ve presented with your honesty and integrity have been a blessing which encourages me to at least make an effort to forage for mushrooms this fall.

    I absolutely love mushroom hunting! Unfortunately I hate eating them, I just want to go along with a group of people and pick for them :d. It's been a few years but I miss it so much; great video :)

    • @horizanadventures
      @horizanadventures 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Why don't you go along with your group and give them away. We give a lot of them away. Bare in mind that all mushrooms don't all taste the same. Take the shitake for instance. It has a distinct smell and flavor. If your used to eating store bought mushroom they are different. Not to mention the immune busters. Do more research on these things. Also me and my wife use them in soup, stews grave's. Your might give that a thought.

    I've been hunting the Adirondacks. The bio-diversity there blew my mind. I live in a rural area that has some wild areas but to see "old growth" with no "forest managment" is just awesome. I've been chaga hunting and scouting for reishi. We had a no show on those little buggers last year so hoping for bumper crop/flush this year. Hope to find some morels this year too!

    2:38 in Russia we call this one a "raw-eat" (literal translation), and like chanterelle (which we call "foxie" hehe) it's perfect for stir-frying and tastes amazing.

    So many interesting people in Alaska, I hope I can travel to there one day :) Btw, in the nursery school my "symbol" was that Amanita muscaria... In the Hungarian nursery schools every kid get a symbol and that is on their bag and table... Why was I a mushroom? Was I that dreamy? Haha

    We have sooooo many mushrooms on the tundra around Bethel and I've been trying for years to identify some edible ones without success! Please come out to Bethel and host a fungus foray. I think there would be alot of people who would be interested and maybe the cooperative extension would help get you out here!

    At 3:00 She is holding two orange mushrooms and goes on explaining "this one is poisonous" No it´s not, its Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca, commonly known as the False Chanterelle, totally harmless and can be used as substitute for bubble gum. She is mixing it whit Omphalotus olearius, commonly known as the jack-o'-lantern mushroom, what is poisonous.

    • @llewej7
      @llewej7 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Aaron Rantonen You obviously know more about this than I do, but my question is ... can you really say that the false chanterelle is totally harmless? My understanding is that if you eat a bunch of it, you will have some major gastrointestinal problems. Sure it will not kill you but...

    • @aaronrantonen6168
      @aaronrantonen6168 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +llewej7 Hygrophoropsis aurantiaca is just tasteless, with bubblegum like consistency. It´s sometimes eaten here in Finnland, mistaken for Cantharellus cibarius, haven´t heard about any toxicity, shure as all edible mushrooms can cause gastrointestinal tsunami in case of trehalase deficiency. But hey, we eat also parboiled false morrels (Gyromitra esculenta) here. :)

    • @goodmushroom
      @goodmushroom 8 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The two she's holding are not Jack O'lanterns. They are way too small and the color is too oranges and bright

      *It sometimes is listed as poisonous, or slightly poisonous, and can cause stomach issues, therefore I wouldn’t call it “totally harmless”. There are various foods, several mushroom species, out there that are poisonous but “safe” (more like “okay”) to eat in small quantities or if prepared correctly.*

      Because being followed by an i (or and e or sometimes a y) makes a g soft, generally. Being followed by a u (or an o or an a or an h) makes a g hard, generally. In English anyway.
