Sherlock Holms in one of the radio plays of 1932 actually used the silver spoon in a bowl of mushrooms to determine that someone had deliberately poisoned the home owner.

20:53 Meanwhile in Czech Republic: part of our culture for 100+ years, everyone was at least once mushrooming - majority of people go mushrooming regulary, 99 % of Czechs can differentiate the most common mushrooms (field mushroom, parasol, chanterelle, cauliflower fungus, all kinds of edible boletes, slippery jack, russulas etc. and of course all common toxic mushrooms with amanitas on the first place) and when is "mushroom season" you can see full forests of mushroomers. And fun fact... allhough in Czech Republic is every year about 100-500 people with light poisoning, there are almost zero deaths, if it's like 5 people in one year it's the "bad" year. :'D

Thank you Adam. I have learned SO much from your videos. I'm amazed at the amount of knowledge you have, not only fungi but plants as well. Keep those videos coming.
My dad is from the Yucatán. His folks lived by this rule: cook with a raw garlic clove. If the garlic turns black, it’s edible. He tested this with some yard grass mushrooms at our apartment complex in Tucson. Other than the tongue lashing from my mom, he’s fine
In 1979, I was in the my sophmore year of High School. Me and 8 friends hopped a barbed wire fence at night and foraged half a pillow case of Psilocybe cubensis that was growing in cow manure patties. We brewed those Psilocybe cubensis into a tea. We added tropical punch Koolaide to the brew to make it easier to consume. We tripped on that Psilocybe cubensis for 4 days. We also smoked 2 ounces of high grade Guerrero grown Maxican sensimilla. I had a direct connection back and was selling a lot of weed back then. It was a truly a magical experience tripping with all of my friends. I'm now 60 years old and have not gotten high since 1989. But, I want to forage for some Psilocybe cubensis to help me with stress and anexiety. Growing old is a tough reality. Because advanced Rumatoid Arthritis has began to rob me of my youth. I see Psilocybe Cubensis is as medicine from God. Because our brain was made with receptors for that magical fungi.
I'm going to say, if there is a liquid in a pot that can rapidly tarnish silver to the point that it appears black, that is probably very unsafe to consume
If silver turns black rapidly get the fuck away and call poison control. that means thiers a high level of sulfer and if its in a pot of water on your stove then it can come out of the water through vaper vary fast and kill you with a vary small amount. Rapid tarnishing is a huge sign of toxicity because of sulfer.
Note the book he quoted which contained that piece was published two centuries ago... 1894 I think it was... Education and knowledge have seriously progressed since then
While its apparently an old myth and one I wouldn't risk my life on. It's also not one I have heard before. -But It seemed reasonable that a toxin in a mushroom could tarnish silver. Sulfur is the reason silver will tarnish, and Sulfur is generally not advisable to injest. Though I'm sure there are certain toxins in some mushrooms that can be deadly and yet not tarnish silver.
also, dude i just have to applaud you. you are so knowledgable, and from how it seems you seem to be able to talk about these fungi scientifically, not fumbling at all for 30 minutes or more. its very impressive, even if you are taking breaks and looking at notes inbetween shots, because that means your editing is flawless

I really like this guy. I've been searching and admiring mushrooms for a long time, but I don't pick them, just photograph and try to identify them. Foraging is extremely important as a survival skill and Id really love to be able to find and confidently indentify mushrooms. I love to eat mushrooms so much. Also, no, I do not like tripping on psilocybin mushrooms, but they are beautiful to look at and it was those days in my past that got me interested in edibles.
why not? if you never have, you should definitely experience it. Its a MYTH that it turns you into a bumbling hippie lol life is short and tripping is a life altering experience if done with the proper mindset and setting. if you're uncertain you can even microdose to start. you dont trip or feel a body high, you just gain a higher mental capacity and boosts your creativity. just a thought. search up some of Paul Stamets or Micheal Pollans interviews if you have doubts of its legitimacy. heck even Johns Hopkins University use psilocybin mushrooms to treat patients with ptsd/depression and on cancer patients who are having trouble coping with the prospect of death and they are having great success. not saying you have to do them, i dont even know if you have done them before lol im just ranting. have a nice day
Thank you so much for this video. My backyard erupted with numerous mushrooms of about four different types around the oak trees within the past few days. After reading information from several internet sources, I was THIS close to deciding that mushroom identification and consumption is too dangerous to explore further. You've encouraged me to keep learning.😊
Another myth is that toxic mushrooms, even dangerously toxic ones don't taste good. Lots of people that have been fatally poisoned report that the mushrooms were delicious.
I dont know if you have any knowledge about this; but isnt it true that when you encounter something unknown and you want to eat it you should first rub a little on your lips and wait an hour? The theory is when your lips will swell turn red or have any discomfort then its poisonous. Would you know if there is any truth to this?
There's a bell curve for both "edible" and deadly... 99% will either taste gross and or cause upset stomach according to the mushroom book I got from Gramps *Don't go out eating random mushrooms* you're gonna be mostly fine if you do though
@@matthewfredrickmfkrz1934 I wish, it would be so easy. Problem is, that in the last 1% sitting something like Amanita phalloides (death cap), which is actually sweet and cause no obvious troubles after consumption. And there is more nerfotoxic mushroom, that taste good, but slowly kill you in weeks, so go outside wich chances that 1 in 100 or even 1 in 500 could be deadly poisonous seems quite suicidal for me.
@@tymak_cz it's that easy... according to the book 1/200 is either gonna be good eating or fn kill u 99% however otherwise will not taste good or cause stomach irritability which is even common with edible mushrooms and thus why it's not recommended to eat raw mushrooms you'd be mostly fine if you did though probably the same chances of diarrhea you have going to McDonald's lol
I like your point at the end...emphasizing "fun" in mushroom hunting. You're right, if you're not having fun, then you're not doing it right! You do need to be cautious, but if you're beginning to get burned out, then slow down. You don't need to memorize every mushroom that's out there all at once; it takes time. When in doubt, don't eat it, until you look it up! And have fun!

@@EvenStarLoveAnanda Sorry but you're wrong, there are a few that have staining characteristic, including several boletes that can make you quite sick.

The same person who tried to tell me that touching toxic mushrooms is harmful is also the person who told me that putting toxic mushrooms in the same basket with edible mushrooms will render the edible ones toxic...And she is convinced that black bears hoot like owls. The 1st time I went foraging with her we heard an owl & she started yelling, "Get out of here bear!" She made me stop walking (in the dirt parking area) & told me to make noise, so I started hitting together the hammer & chisel I had from harvesting chaga. She told me that wouldn't be effective & that I had to yell at the "bear".....Long story short, it was an owl.

I am a new student to this marvelous world of mushrooms. I have learned 3, morel, porcini, reishi. I was always led to believe that mushrooms contained no nutrients, listening to these informative videos have shown me that this a myth as well. Thank you for sharing your knowledge.
Boletus queletii bruise a very unique coloration and that is blue and black. The color change is caused by a chemical reaction that occurs when certain compounds in the cell walls mushroom is exposed to air. Now for the next topic, the oxidation process. When exposed to air, the variegatic acid in the mushroom is converted to the blue-colored molecule quinone methide. There are many famous blue-bruising mushrooms. A common rule for boletes is that you shouldn't eat one that has a red pore surface and bruises blue. Because so many blue bruising boletes are poisonous, it's best to avoid them all together. Psilocybe cubensis - The stems bruise blue or blue-green. This is a hallucinogenic mushrooms but note that no all hallucinogenics mushrooms bruise blue Some people think all blue bruising mushrooms are safe to eat or are hallucinogenic. The bolete rule of above proves that this is not true. The myth is an example of why identifying through bruising alone is a bad idea! Cheers everyone !

@jamada d honestly I'm not an expert on mushroom and I didn't really go deeply into this channel or any other resource about mushrooms. I really don't know much.
@jamada d no I don't think they are the most poisonous substance in the world nor did I say that there is guaranteed a reaction on your skin what I said was if there is a reaction on your skin there will most likely be a reaction in your body and it is most likely to be fatal it's just an extra step to take before you go putting unknown mushrooms near or in your mouth to increase your safety and as you said "it's just another level of identification."
You can transplant mushrooms, mycelium will grow and spread from any portion of a fresh mushroom, I've seen many people start their own mushroom patches from pieces of wild mushrooms. Next time you pick mushrooms put the discarded pieces in a blender with distilled water and mollases (about a cup) and blend until you can barely see the pieces, mix that in a 5 gallon bucket of distilled water and pour it in an area that looks like it would be good for that type of mushroom. 90% of the time you will get that mushroom in that area in a couple years depending on the type. This is a good way of spreading morel mushrooms but is less likely for wood growing mushrooms unless you can get it under the bark on fallen trees. This will be clones of the mushrooms you picked except for any spores that might be present. If you soak the mushrooms in salt water first it won't work.
I never thought of feeding as an intimate act. I was so enlightened by your words! I forage and eat about 20-30 different species of mushrooms myself and I am constantly learning from videos like yours. Your content is amazing!

was going to post this but you covered it perfectly, yup, common ink caps and shaggy ink caps are edible once cooked but if you've consumed alcohol 48 hours before or after ingestion they are toxic, and cause gastro discomfort, nausea, diarrhea, and vomiting, and the other symptoms you listed.

Regarding myth 16, is it true that you can taste Russula mushrooms to determine edibility? I have heard that if it is bitter, it is inedible. If it is hot or spicy, it is probably poisonous. If it is sweet or doesn't have a taste after about 30 seconds of being on your tongue, it is edible. I have heard the same rules for tasting the latex of milk caps. What are your thoughts on this? By the way, excellent video! I really enjoy learning all the content you put out. You helped get me into foraging and just being out in nature more in general.
It is the case that there are no deadly Russula mushrooms (though Russula emetica/silvestris is honest about its emetic side effects), so yes, you can safely taste them. The inedible ones will taste peppery, bitter, or otherwise disgusting, for example like soap, and you will want to spit them out. That leaves the edible ones, the best of which often taste of fresh hazelnuts. Milk caps are very similar, with only a few considered toxic. Of course, first of all, you need to be sure you have a Russula or a Lactarius in your hand.
My grandpa used to add a silver dollar to the pan with wild mushrooms he was unsure about. As a kid, I have vivid memories of him doing this. My grandparents were first generation kids of the immigrant influx into New England in the early 20th century. They were both farmers children. My grandfather was German and his mother passed down the silver trick. He swore by it and died of natural causes at the age of 90.
As a dog owner I always bring my dog when I walk in the forrest. As having my dog with me I also have plastic bags for dog 💩. And living in Sweden where we don't have to take the car everywhere I walk from home to the forrest, passing through parts of the town. So sometimes when I haven't been planing on finding mushrooms I've used (NOT USED FOR ITS ORIGINAL PURPOSE, OF COURSE! 😂) one of those bags. Personal favourite... Stir fry some diced onion, garlic and sweet tomatoes add chicken of the woods and splash with a dry white wine as you turn off the stove...better than steak
Chicken is like lowest level of edibility, if you've never had Morrell you've never had an excellent shroom. Please buy them if you must but they are best edible shroom in the world hands down.

Thanks, Adam! Paul Stamet's interview on the Joe Rogan podcast says he stays away from button/portobello/crimini and if he says exactly why, his life is in danger. (!!) After doing a bit of research on his statement, agaritines still stay in the mushroom even after hours of cooking. I no loner eat them anymore.
The mushrooms that bruise blue are the ones I always DO want to eat! 🤣🤣 Oh and I transplant my mushrooms all the time...I cut the stem butts off and then bury them in other places around my yard... usually takes about a month to 6 weeks, but I typically end up finding fruiting bodies in those areas later on ✌️
The mycelium can stretch for miles underground,, So I would say it's just the same mycelium fruiting in another area in your yard. Not the mushroom you buried. 👍
What if you touch a poisonous mushroom with your fingers and accidentally touch your mouth or consume food without washing your hands could you get sick? Thanks for the video tons of information
You should have pointed out that a lot of the Psilocybin mushrooms bruise a bright blue or dark blue/greenish color, which is probably why the "myth" of bruising blue is toxic, because its a hallucinogenic mushroom. Not all psilocybin (or magic) mushrooms bruise blue, but a lot of them do. In fact, if that is what you are looking for, and the mushrooms don't bruise blue, they're not the mushroom you are looking for.
I think it’s more likely to come from the boletes..tbh. Some of them REALLY stain a strong blue, or red, not like the vague staining that only sometimes occurs with some psilocybin mushrooms. Not all:staining boletes are toxic, but all the toxic ones are stainers.

I dont know if you have any knowledge about this; but isnt it true that when you encounter something unknown and you want to eat it you should first rub a little on your lips and wait an hour?
The theory is when your lips will swell turn red or have any discomfort then its poisonous.
Would you know if there is any truth to this?

I'm pretty sure it's actually the psilocin oxidizing that makes it bruise blue, not the psilocybin.

@jamada d it would taste bad, though it's still not great advice as many mushrooms are poisonous enough to harm you even via a single lick.
@jamada d honestly I'm not an expert on mushroom and I didn't really go deeply into this channel or any other resource about mushrooms. I really don't know much.
@jamada d no I don't think they are the most poisonous substance in the world nor did I say that there is guaranteed a reaction on your skin what I said was if there is a reaction on your skin there will most likely be a reaction in your body and it is most likely to be fatal
it's just an extra step to take before you go putting unknown mushrooms near or in your mouth to increase your safety and as you said "it's just another level of identification."
@jamada d "yeah, that is a safer way to do it but you're just a pussy" good argument but don't tell people just to lick unknown mushrooms
@jamada d very bad advice. There are many that only taste good after cooking or drying
I never eat mushrooms, I live in the deserts of Arizona so it's not like I can go search for them...and yet I love all your mushroom videos lol.
You can order spores online and grow them indoors they don't like light so they grow well indoors

So sometimes when I haven't been planing on finding mushrooms I've used (NOT USED FOR ITS ORIGINAL PURPOSE, OF COURSE! 😂) one of those bags.
