In response to one of the comments below/above, I think mentioning her age is part and parcel of this miracle. Many sopranos sang past 60, but Miss Fleming is 3 months shy of 64 here. Patti, Melba, Sutherland, Rysanek, Price, and Nilsson, who all sang past 60, certainly needed slight indulgence on the part of listeners in those final years. Miss Fleming needs no indulgence whatsoever. She sounds like she’s 40 and in her prime-RADIANT tone, dead-center intonation, STEADY pitch (not a hint of a wobble anywhere), and totally effortless production. Almost all of the “critics”, most of whom are imbeciles, just didn’t get it. Most damned her with faint praise and were more impressed with the Broadway star. Opera in The Grand Tradition is fading fast. In the words of Magda Sorel, “To this we’ve come.” 🥲
Renee has always talked about her being meticulous with her instrument, so I’m not surprised at how amazing she sounds!!! I just love it and I love her! ❤
I'll have to see this to fully be in the moment of the context of the story, let's be fair people. I've never actually heard a soprano over 60 sound as fresh as Renee sounds here. Not being unkind by mentioning the age but rather very complimentary. She sounds glorious. I'm intrigued as I don't remember each and every story from this movie it's based on. It was so long ago and it is very long.
I agree. Fleming is the standard for vocal beauty and technical discipline, which is why she still sounds glorious and retains the agility for such vocal nuance. Another is Bartoli, who sounds as fresh as her first recording in the 80s. Unfortunately they are both notable exceptions in today’s opera world.
@@SteveL2012 I saw her last night. Sounded amazing. All the way at the tippy top of the family circle (highest level) on the extreme right and could still hear everything. Kelli is also a highlight. The part is mind bendingly high and difficult.
Her subito crescendo and subito decrescendo are simply remarkable and unparalleled in my operatic memory. Absolutely breathtaking and with crystalline clarity. . .
I just saw the Met Live in HD encore performance of this opera. It was WONDERFUL!!! All the leads were great! I thought Renée sounded especially good! She is such a great actress as well as singer! In the scene where Richard dies, you can see the tears rolling down Renée’s face while she sings. I hope she keeps on singing for many more years!!!
Why does the camera keep pulling back and ignoring her singing and acting. So many opera editors think singing is too boring to watch . I want to see them sing !
I think they're trying to give a sense of the singer's presence on the stage and in the set, mirroring what someone sitting in the audience would see. I like the close-ups but I also appreciate seeing what's happening in the larger context.
Renee sounds astonishing. Why is this an aria? It’s incredible that there are so many examples of great librettos and contemporary librettists still almost always get it wrong. I’m always just amazed that no one manages the creative teams on these projects. Probably no one knows what’s wrong.
It would take a genius to make great opera out of this material. It is essentially untheatrical, nothing happens. The novel was very fine. The novel can do some things the stage only rarely can.

Agreed! Renée is in her own league and people compare her with her own self 20 years younger. Fair? No.
I agree, but Kelli don’t just call Kelli “the Broadway star”, she was absolutely amazing
Renee Fleming still sounds wonderful.

Renée and her glorious instrument are BOTH very well-preserved!!!
I’ve loved her since day 1. I’m still in awe of how glorious her instrument still is.

@@SteveL2012 Quite right. Here's hoping Ailyn Perez may have a similar longevity.

This amazing artist can sing whatever and it'll be beautiful...!
Renée is AMAZING!!!
I was very moved by this production, and especially the contributions of the three leading ladies!!
Pure GOLD!✨🎶✨
She’s killing the music. Go her!
She was fantastic..never heard a soprano over 60 sound absolutely so fresh. And the score isn't easy
It's going to be my favorite opera...
Weonderful Renée ♥
Frau Fleming!!! Sie sind eine Wunde!!! ❤💐👏🙏
Ein Wunder, meinen Sie? 🙂 Ja, sie ist fantastisch!!

@@mdcathell When I go anywhere to hear Renée sing,(in person or on video), I want to see her face! She expresses so much emotion in her face!

I hated the movie, too depressing. But wow does Renée sound amazing and the music is atmospheric in a good way.
Oh, dear... I love Renee Fleming but music and libretto. I dunno.
yeah, guessing you don't know based upon two and a half minutes
@@Marcel_Audubon exactly!
1:40 is she wrong or are the subtitles mistaken?
I’d say the subtitles are wrong!
The work is boring, the voice is lovely.

Poor Richard.
