I simply say I love her beautiful trained voice. This Puccini classic is one of my favorites. It touches the heart in so many ways.

And last word “pietà” at the end without with a closed mouth just showing her teeth and smiling. The Word translates as Have Mercy or by pity. No smile.
Mike Dick she must hit those notes. Otherwise the video would not be loaded as a failure display. Hitting those notes are required in this masterpiece

This is the best I've heard anyone sing this and not only does she hit all the nose and slide on the ones that should be slid on, oh the drama the phrasing and the dynamics are impeccable. Just the way I like this with so much emotion brings a tear to the eye.

I have always enjoyed listening to Ms. Fleming albeit a few and far between times and selections. I have never been so in awe listening to anyone sing this Puccini all time favorite as I have been tonight with her beautiful sublime voice. Amazing!

It is something incredible to be near-say within 25 ft-of an opera soprano singing at full power. It turns your insides to jelly. The human voice-without electronic amplification-can be an unworldly instrument. How I would like to see Renee Fleming live on the stage.

I almost dont care who sings this aria, I love the music and the opera in any event, but Ms. Fleming is wonderful here. The interaction with audience is great. More young people in the US need exposure to this timeless music and theater.

I love the conductor’s chef’s kiss at 2.12 - he knew she had just nailed that famous diminuendo. It was phenomenal breath control.
The look on her face says, "Here is my gift to you." And what a gift it is. I know the translation and how it works in the opera, but in concert it feels like the lullaby that one would be a fool NOT to want to hear it sung to them.
I've heard this many times, but this truly is special. You know when an audience takes a full beat before they applaud. They're re-entering Earth's atmosphere.

Seriously, I chime in with previous writers: she embodies & lives this aria 😱😍 There are so many other good & great interpretations but, oh God, she’s THE BEST. It’s not just about her impeccable technique but her sublime emotion & precision that hits bulls’ eye in your heart!

She's still got it. Saw her recently in recital at LA Opera and I was impressed.
Other than a fab voice, rendition and diction, it is clear she understands Italian language, because she stresses the words, and the emotions, exactly at the right times .... something that foreign opera singers, both male and female, not always ace no matter how sublime they sing. For me personally, and as an Italian and big fanboy of Italian language, this aspect is crucial when I listen to the song.
Thank you for that insight. I was blown away by her performance but, to know that she actually nails it, makes the experience better.

You make me think of Hayley Westenra. She does a beautiful performance of lascia ch'io pianga, but she failed to express "let me weep" in her performance. But Renee does this very well in her's.

I am blown away by that last note! Her mouth is completely closed! Her teeth are open and her face is open and she’s generating a ton of sound inside her mouth. But her mouth is closed! How the hell is that even possible?
Her lips are open, so her mouth isn't closed, and if it were, she'd be making an M sound.
Sound is generated mostly with the vocal chords, and the mouth does most of the shaping.
The mouth does generation when it's voiceless sounds like S, F, H. "Voiceless" basically means, no vocal chord.
But she's not saying any of that, she's saying the vowel A in pieta!
Vowels are almost always voiced (as in, powered by the vocal chords). So, of course, she can close her mouth partly with her teeth, and still make an A sound.
You should try talking with your teeth stuck together for a moment, just for fun! You can do it with a big smile, or a frown. It's amusing, and you can still say so many sounds. In English, only very "dental" (toothy) sounds like TH are affected. There are some people who talk like this all the time, it can be sort of posh.
Giacomo Puccini created something so powerful that it moves people to tears of joy for over 100 years.

Alexander George Tsakumis you must watch M Caballe’s version of the aria and you’ll change your mind. Or even Callas. Those ladies mastered the Aria to the very perfection in very different ways
Chris Stephens I agree with you. I liked the rendition although I could never figure out where the climax of the aria was ! At the beginning of the song she was smiling like she didn’t understand what she was singing about also at a certain point it seems like she was more concerned about showing off her figure than telling the story of the aria. This Music masterpiece has been interpreted by so many artists and most of them have figured a way to tell the most important part,the climax of it, but this lady didn’t. Let’s review M Caballé Or Callas versions. We will find pure perfection in 2 different ways!!

So many times I hear other great sopranos sing an aria and I think, "Beautiful!" but then I hear Fleming sing the same aria and I think, "OMG! That's IT!!" So effortless, so true to the emotions!
I don't think you even need to be an opera fan to appreciate this. Truly amazing. And that she can hit the notes with such power and beauty and keep smiling is astounding!
