    I've been changing motorcycle tires for 48 years. I would call that thing a bead breaker, and a pretty nice one at that. Though I could also change a tire on it if I so chose, at nearly 60 years of age I'm not into working on the ground and wouldn't trade it for my taller, Tusk-type one without the arm. I think mine was sold as "MSR" brand when I bought it years ago. It was the first one I ever saw for sale and I bought it. Believe me, there is nothing that beats standing with the tire at waist level. I currently use a discontinued Harbor Freight bead breaker I've had for years on a work bench, but would buy that one in a heartbeat if it ever breaks.

      @@blakeonpc8290 Ya, did it that way for years. Used screwdrivers for tire irons back in the day too, but you live and learn. My stand holds the wheel tight, and allows for access all around the tire, which makes the job exponentially easier less frustrating.

    If you use the bead breaker to push the bead into the drop center of the rim, it will make it much easier to get the bead on or off on the opposite side of the rim.

    I have that exact stand and use it to change mousses. Use the arm to press the bead in while you put in levers. It makes that part a toooon easier. Also you can put a tire iron in the bead when you are putting the last bead in the rim and have the metal pin on the stand hold the lever for you

    I have the same tool and for tubeless trials tires it is absolutely a must have! Breaking the bead is super EZ, without it it is nearly impossible.

    Longer tire irons will help. I am a fan of the ones you can order from the Honda tool catalogue. Baby powder works for mounting a new tire too. Put some inside the carcass, on the tube, and on each bead. It’ll help the beads slide on, and lessen the chance of a pinch flat. Plus you aren’t left with wd-40 or soapy water in your tire.

    I think everyone just has to find the system that works for them. I like just using a Tusk stand, 3 tire levers, and windex.

    I have the Tusk version. The paddle on the arm is just for breaking the bead...and lowering the bead to get spoons in. If you just focus on using it to knock the bead off its very helpful. Overall, Its a nice elevated work station to hold the tire in position so you can work your hand tools more efficiently. Its not a Rabaconda. Id love to get a standup stand but the beauty of this is it can be hung up on a wall out of the way when not in use. Ill put it on top of my workbench when I use it so I am in a standing position. Buds pro paste helps too if you've ever used it. Thanks for your vids!!

    Slide the bead breaker closer to the pivot point on the lever arm, you will find it’s plenty long.

    I got tired of doing tires on the shop floor and went with the Tusk stand. Once I got the height of the stand dialed in tire changes went great. Using purpose designed bead lubricant (the greasy snotty kind in a tub or a tube, not the aerosol kind) made it even easier.

    Changing tires is work, I use a stand to help back fatigue :)
    Sometimes on a 18 inch rear wheel on soft gummy tires(or weak used sidewalls, i.e. Equilibrium), getting the bead broke is a little chore for me, the arm on your changer can help with that(if its long enough). I have an old harbor freight changer(I use for street bike tires) that has a bead breaker if I need it.
    You had some trouble getting the first 3 bites of a tire off the rim, ya it kicks my butt too. I only change a tire after its been in the sun, heat does help. I have 3 big spoons I use for this(but on soft tires, regular spoons are easy on 18 inch rears(not so much on a firm 19 inch tire). If I had that changer, I would use the arm to push the bead down on the opposite side as I was working, but we just have 2 hands, so it could be much more awkward than I'm thinking, lol. I do like putting in 3 spoons at once to get the process moving. I've never tried WD40, just soap and water(not bad, I go with dawn). or armor all(leaves the sidewall shinny, lol), if I'm in a pinch, I'll try it!
    Putting on the new tire, I REALLY like the Baja no pinch tool, it's amazing with a tire changer(I have a motion pro). It's my best $$ spent for tire changes(maybe the stand was the best, lol)
    I've installed a mousse in a 21 inch front tire(I want no more front tire issues in the field), took me and a friend, I think having a changer with an arm would really help here, the mousse keeps the bead out of the drop center really well. If I learn to like the front mouse, I'll probably drop for a rabbaconda($$ but well thought out changer for bib mousses), to just make it easier. I change tires for 4 bikes in our family, and a couple of friends, so easy is good in my book. I'll still run a TUbliss in the rear, although my hard running kid will get a mousse in the near future(kids=Tire shredders)
    I've changed so many tires on the ground(Fn tubes, lol), is this $60 changer easier on your back?(that is worth $60 IN MY BOOK!)
    I've looked at this tire changer so many times(online), thinking I'd keep it in the trailer, but thanks to your vid, I'm going to pass. Although I thought it would work well on the tailgate of a pickup.
    Huge thank you for making the video.
    Side note, last time I went through Donner pass, it was Rain, rain, rain, the dust on your last race was EPIC(as in BAD), I felt bad for all that were there, I never, ever have seen it so bad. You did 4 of those loops? WOW

    • @TrailBoundco
      @TrailBoundco  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey brad thanks for the reply. You must have a lot of patience to change 4 tires at once! so tough. The tire in the sun trick works well, it was a rainy night but usually use a heater on them for a bit, not sure if I did on this occasion, certainly looks like they were cold how tough they were putting them on haha.
      I've tried this tire changer on my work bench, it was a bit to high (I had clamped it on there too) I think the optimal height is 1.5ft taller than it is here, you want to be able to put your back into it and use your knee. but how low it is here its a bit to much back haha. I'd like to weld on a hitch receiver and stick it in the hitch. that would be a good height and help to hold it in place.
      If you run DOT tires I think thats the only reason you'd really need that beed breaker arm. its nice but not that helpful.
      I looked at this tire changer for awhile but I will say if I'm going camping and know I'm going to change a tire I bring it. just having it held in the stand is really nice. It was going slow here because I was trying to use the stands advantage but if you just spoon it normal using the stand to hold the tire in place it goes well

    I've got one of these, brilliant, bought mine from difference source but they're all generic more or less, brilliant when u know how to use them, I would say, in time, just beef up the bead breaker, and make them your own by adding stuff or taking away depending on what you use it for most, for example ive "insulated" the rim with thick foam that u get covering pipes so when I'm doing cruiser wheels it doesn't mark any where, and I hang mine up when not in use and installed earth magnets so all my tyre levers etc have a home so it comes off wall ready to go.

  • @phmsvideo

    As mentioned below.. lower the pressure foot down a few notches so it presses the tire in towards the rim a a very slight angle.
    This will keep it from slipping away and the arm will be higher up. It’s to replace the your “knee” action of holding the bead down while spooning.. it will become your third hand/bead buddy.
    I have a friend that has a different brand, but very similar.
    I have a harbor freight a couple miles away.. and just might get one to try.. return if it’s shit.

    Defiantly move the blade down toward the hinge. When you push the lever down the blade should be at a 90 degrees to the tire. It its angled it will slip and not grab the tire as you see. If your changing a tube that bar is only good for breaking the beads. With the bibs ... its used to insert levers easier and also if the blade were longer force the tire off. Its also used for forcing the last bit of bead over the rim Cole Kirkpatrick has a video on using this style stand mounting bibs you should watch. IMO, You need better levers. The tusk HD spoons or like 2 or 3 more of the MP one you have (longer black curved one). I use a standard stand without a lever on it for bibs. Its no fuss either. Its all about technique (I hope yours has improved). You need to force the bead in the center of the rim across from where you are levering and bead buddies help this. 2 or 3. You can use a short lever as well like you did. You really need 3 good ones and a few short ones to use as bead buddies to force the tire to center.

    I got this same stand. I really did not use the full features. Like that it holds the tire (center hold). The arm...eh....it helps a little, but I find sometimes I dont use it either (just forget about it). Do i find it easier than just using the garage floor and irons? yea I guess it does make it easier. Bead break is ok but standing on it would do it also. Pushing the tire off with the arm does not work really to get it off the bead...your right....too short. Maybe its the KTM rims....I had a hell of a time getting on my new Shinko tires. I dont think i have ever felt so frustrated getting tire on (and I had just bought this tire changer to help me).

    Put a piece of drywall sanding screen between the bead breaker jaw and the tire help keep it FROM slipping I use kerosene makes your tire slip on over the rim en dries fast en tacky. I always scrub the bead with kerosene a rag till they are dry en tacky especially if you're not running bead locks then reapply kerosene for the mount WD 40 IS basically kerosene BUT DOES have a negotiable amount of that persistent slippy silicon 👍😆

    You've got the shovel mounted too far toward the handle on your rig. loosen that shovel bolt and lower it two notches. It'll work much better. You would benefit from using the shovel to hold the first side you started by hand down into the drop center. While holding it in place with the shovel you can then work your way around with the spoons.

    avoid wd40 and soapy spray- for $9 bucks harbor freight online get a heat gun- heat it up -use 3-5 irons and your bead system - take you 10 minutes and your done and zero mess :)

    Rabaconda man. Doesn’t really help with taking it off because of tubliss . Other than breaking the bead. Putting it on, I literally slide on a bead buddy, lube the tire, push the tire on. So fast!

    • @TrailBoundco
      @TrailBoundco  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      thats rad. why doesn't it help with taking the tire off on tubliss?

    • @franciscovelasquez2446
      @franciscovelasquez2446 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can’t push the tire through the rim on take off because it catches on the tubliss. So you have to spoon it off on each side. But that is cake! Ideally mousses but at 100$ a pop I’m gooood.

    I have to ask if this tire changer is missing parts, because I noticed you didn't use the wing nut to hold tire on center shaft, and there is just something wrong with calling it a tire changer when it doesn't have attachments to lift bead over rim lip and reseat new tire bead back under rim lip, may be a false advertisement claim here on product, you're still basically doing 80% of the job so guess it is what it is...

    First: The lever on the top is only for Breaking the Bead ONLY.
    Second: If you understand the following principle, it will make tire installation with the levers much easier... (Two or three 24" tire irons wouldn't hurt either. Those short ones are for bicycles, mopeds & use in a small dirt bike tool kit)
    "Drop Center"
    Most wheels will have a portion of the barrel that is bent inward, creating a ringlike area around the barrel that is closer to the centerline of the wheel than the rest of the barrel. In order to mount a tire that has the same inner diameter as the wheel's outer diameter, one side of the tire must be placed into this depression on the wheel so that the tire can “slide over” just enough to let the other side of the tire slip over the rim edge. This “drop center” will be closer to one or the other edge of the wheel. When the drop center is closer to the face of the wheel, it is known as a “front-mount” wheel and can be placed on a tire mounter with the face up. The tire is then mounted over the outer face of the wheel. On many “deep-dish” wheels, however, it is not possible to place the drop center near the front face because of the dish, and so the drop center is placed closer to the inboard edge of the wheel. These wheels are known as “reverse-mount”, and must be carefully clamped onto the mounter with the face down.
    Third: When Journeyman Mechanics see a novice act like this... it reminds us of the old addage... "Looks Like a 🐒Monkey🐵 Fookin a Football🏈".

    It may work on a small tire but it is worthless on a 16 inch Harley tire. the bead breaking part is too short and the screw that holds it in position pops out of place don't waste your money.

      @@TrailBoundco That is just a big bicycle tire try it on a real motorcycle tire. The pry bar part hits the rim well before the part used to break the bead can even make good contract.

    Build a wooden stand and mount it on the stand. About 30 inches tall. Make the stand bottom wider that the hoop is by twice. Working on the ground is a bitch. Plus you are using the device wrong. I'll.make a video and send it too yoo.
