  • My first time ever trying Singapore’s famous Chili Crab. Newton Centre is a famous hawker center in Singapore. It’s full of food stalls with a variety of food, it’s hard to decide what to eat here.

It's wonderful seeing Jean! I love her. She's a sweetheart, a good friend to you and Satoshi, and so knowledgeable. All the food looked delicious. As a vegetarian, the carrot cake was particularly interesting. In fact, I just looked up a recipe for it. 😋 Thank you for taking us along to Newton Hawker Centre--it's good to know it's "tourist friendly."

Jean is so lovely. It was so nice to see her face after hearing you talk about her for so long. And I'm glad I had lunch before I watched this, everything looked to good. Especially that crab and the squid.🦀🦑😋

I was born and bred in Singapore and now live in Hawaii. I’ve been looking out for a good restaurant that serves Singaporean dishes here however 🤷🏻‍♀️. Thumbs up for the dishes you tried; I love them all. Newton Circus looks better than the last time I was there 👍🏼. Great vdo, Shinichi 👍🏼👍🏼.

Shinichi-san, we enjoyed the videos you and Jean have done so far on SG food. You have found a very good SG co-host. Both of you could do more local hawker and coffee shop foods, as well as nice foods within walking distances to mrt stations. We believe both locals and tourists will like the videos.

I was a Singaporean now living in NZ. Agree, Newton Circus food centre is the place for both local and tourist, and you mentioned that certain dishes are pricier but taste good, fair enough. BUT in the 80’s , cos of the tourists market, I was annoyed by the touting by the stalls Operators hustling for customers! Until the authorities step in to stop it. For comparison, at that time, the dish washer lady earns more than a general clerk in the office 😂

While I was in Bangkok I think I ate at Sushiro once or twice a week. Here in the US there's a conveyor sushi chain that is kinda similar called Kura sushi. The portions are bigger at Sushiro but the wasabi is better at Kura for me.

I... go to Sushiro every week as well... when I am in the US I go to Kura every week... I like the wasabi from Kura more than Sushiro.

Singapore is very clean and modern place. Is it expensive to live there?

Depends. Public Transport and local hawker food are very affordable. Housing wise depends on which area. Central and downtown are expensive but heartland is more affordable. Car is expensive and cab is still cheaper than a lot of developed countries. Alcohol can be quite pricey too.

Hi. Would you say that these are “tourist prices” at Newton now? I went along time ago and it sure has increased!

Some stalls at Newton are nice though they mostly cater to tourists and expats who live in the many expensive condos in that area. For a more local experience, maybe you could head to the nearby Whampoa Hawker Centre just off Balestier Road. At least that hawker centre is surrounded by HDB flats which is government housing that almost 80% of Singaporeans live in. Another very local hawker centre not too far away is Bendemeer Market and Food Centre located beside Boon Keng MRT Station. This is as local as it gets, and most stalls are open from 5am to around 2pm to cater to those who do marketing at the adjacent morning wet market.

The mistake here is eating at Newton food center. An actual Singaporean will not bring you there.
