We’ve got three of the best 4x4s in the business going head-to-head over a series of challenges to find the best off-roader available to buy today!
First up we’ve got Mat in the Land Rover Defender, with a 2-litre diesel engine which produces 240hp. Alongside him, we’ve got the Mercedes G350, which is powered by a 2.9-litre 6 cylinder diesel to produce 286hp. Then finally we have the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon, which has a 2-litre turbocharged petrol with 272hp.

The Defender went up a much steeper hill than the G-Wagen, so that should have been accounted for and given the victory in the first test. Or just have them all on the same hill!

Both the G and the Defender lifted tires in the video on the articulation portion. Also, on the hill climb both the G and the Defender took running starts where they just pulled the Jeep up to the hill and climbed slowly. You guys need more discipline in your tests.

throw 15k into that jeep, upgrade the driver, and the jeep would demolish those other cars while still being cheaper. End of the day you're comparing $38k jeep to a $54k land rover and a $131k g350.

For the price the Jeep punches well above it's weight. All that's missing on it is a nice aftermarket lift kit and it will still cost less than the others and likely be way more reliable over time. The jeep really is bargain

Lr made a car which has monorque chassis so that it could be comfortable onroad and due to its suspension and electronics it's still good in offroad

The defender is basically a supercomputer on wheels.
It's like I'd a 4runner got rid of any mechanical features it had to help it off-road, and replaced it with grange technology that only works on low difficulty terrain, and won't help you in actually offroading

Solid axiles are by far the most important thing on an offroading vehicle. There's a reason why people are still rock crawling Jeeps from the 70's. The land rover is a very comfortable car that functions well in moderate off road conditions.

Pity the 70 series LC doesn’t qualify. It’s also a bit hard to see how the only one that did not complete a test won overall, but was good to see these SUV’s doing more than most owners will ask of them.

In the last challenge, Graham clearly wanted the G wagon to win…because right off the line one of the G wagon & Land Rovers tires came off the ground…
It's a clear win for Defender for me...cause it is the proper go anywhere vehicle of the three.At least the last hurdle the way it crossed no confusion at all.

I couldn't take anything seriously after we were supposed to believe the Jeep didn't comfortably win the wheel articulation part around 13:00. Last challenge Defender is all over the place, Jeep wheels never leave the ground yet Defender wins becoz reasons. Oh and Merc wins everything even though it couldn't complete all the challenges and the other two could (strange way to win for an off road battle). New Defender looks surprisingly good but I'd rather see an honest comparison.

As an all rounder the new Defender looks surprisingly comfortable around town and from all the serious reviews I've seen it's mighty impressive off road too, comfortably going head to head with the 200 series 'cruiser. That's why it's annoying that someone had to make things up (you have to be smoking something to think the Defender has anywhere near the articulation of the rubicon especially with swaybars disconnected), the Defender is plenty good enough to stand on its own merits and out of the three tested was arguably the best all rounder and best value for money.
My '96 Discovery would have put the Defender to shame with regards to articulation. What a pleasure to watch the Jeep and G flex. I love Land Rover and would take the Defender for my primary without even a thought. It is simply the best driver. The Defender simply has better manners and is a more modern vehicle to live with. It even has decent fuel economy. It would be nice to see the Full Size Range Rover in some tests though.
After having only driven a jeep for a few days I have so many questions. Do they not sell the diesel wrangler in the uk? Why were the tires not aired down(my have missed that part but thought it was common for offroading)? Why didnt they use hill ascent or hill descent control while in 4 low? And for the circuit race the jeep should have been in 4auto (if they had 4auto back then).

I wouldn't say that the review was very analytical as it wasn't testing off roading ability it was testing what they thought was appropriate 🤣 if they had the same tires on all of them and they actually went 4wdn. It may be a competition

These tests courtesy of Mat are great fun to watch for people like me living in a nowadays depressing and very expensive Lebanon now short of nearly all utilities and basic services. My being a mighty happy previous owner of a Land Rover V8 Defender 110, obviously my heart leaned over in favour of the new Defender, but all said and done, all three 4WD cars are great, each having its own affinities and strengths as well. For me all three cars are winners in their own respective rights.
Speaking as a machinist myself and knowing metal scrapings intimately, when you're bottoming out in the center like that and stopping all you're doing is letting the weight sit and continue to build and then going just an inch or two and stopping again, also makes you let the weight sit down on it again once you start moving and the small scrape starts happening simply let it slide all the way through and you will have minimal damage to the metal. AKA it's better to have a little ding then it is to have multiple large scrapes.Just a little advice to help you with your show and budget

Quite clearly the Merc was disqualified how was it the best when it couldn’t even go down the slope the DEFENDER was and is the best hands down even on paper beats all its competitors. I have one myself a Defender X P400 Retail Price 102K maybe next time you should keep specs similar regarding power like a Defender D300 or P400 up against a Merc G350d

I would have liked to see a rock crawling competition between the three cars. Jeep and the G-Wagon with their solid axles would probably have an advantage over the Land Rover with its 4-wheel independent suspension.

Personally I'd go with the Jeep, it's main purpose is offroading. The G-Wagon is also very good but it's a car that i would not take offroading like that, if one thing goes wrong I don't even want to know how much the repair bill is going to cost. The defender is also an AMAZING offroading vehicle but it's not my type even though it is a badass vehicle. This is my opinion

It's nice to have something that can go anywhere with ease, but there's no thrill in that! Part of the enjoyment of off-roading is the adrenaline of "am I gonna make it through this obstacle", and the stories that come from failure or success. There's also the 'skill' vs 'computer' part of the enjoyment too.

Totally agree, they establishes early in the video that the Wrangler had the least ground clearance yet the final challenge they didnt want to take the G Wagon down. Graham is an idiot, no place judging Off Roading when he knows nothing about it. And dont get me started on the first 3 challenges of "Racing" which really is not a test of off roading at all.
There are a ton of Jeep owners laughing at that last part. We'll take that without even thinking about it. I mean we have some serious off road places that would make this host wet his pants if that little hill got him going. LOL

The difference being that you can throw a few thousand dollars into any Jeep and it will then crush those opponents. Have you ever seen a Merc or Range Rover do something like the Rubicon trail? Neither have I.

I'd say....this was a joke. I have no preference out of any of them but the tests are not equal...drag race each line is different, through the forest turning is just down to whoever gung-ho's in the most, the hill climb was just momentum and not a test, and everything picked by Graham is just bias.
@@djsomeguy I can't help but find it hilarious when people come to a TH-cam channel like CarWow (or Autotrader, Fifth Gear, Top Gear, etc) and find it somehow surprising and/or disappointing when the videos are nonsense...of course they are, it's kind of the point.

I'm ok with entertainment type car content, but then don't score the vehicles and declare a winner. If you want to score something, score the presenters (like top gear did as to who won the challenges).
@@djsomeguy I don't think they are consciously trying to bias the tests, perhaps a little fear of upsetting someone who gave them a car but you can see for example that Matt generally pushes a little harder than the others no matter what car he's in so I think the bias is in the relative competitiveness of the drivers rather than towards the cars.
I totally agree that the way they score it does suggest it's an accurate representation of the cars which obviously isn't true so something like you said would be a better approach.
Marauder SUV, Innoson made in Nigeria, Kantaka made in Ghana, Mobius made in Kenya, Wallyscar made in Tunisia. I would like to see an off road challenge with all the usual off road vehicles you use.
It looked like the defender was going to flip forward going down that steep hill. The Jeep at least went down in more safe and steady manner. Leave it to the brits to favor their precious land rover!

@@dragospahontu thats not very true. You learn quite a bit, but its not as scientific as autogefuhl for sure. And tbh 95% of people watching are for entertainment and if they are serious about buying the car then they will watch multiple reviews from various channels
@@JWil97 i never listen to review for buying a car, the majority are influencers advertising. Car Expert and Autogefühl seem the only ones that are fair and go into detail.
When I'm buying a car I talk to my mechanic friends, they know which cars are good and which are not the best. And I also talk to friends who've owned multiple cars and learn from their experience.
But I've never learned shit fr this channel apart from horsepower and torque 😅.

That can be done, however, the tyres weren't the issue, lack of Ground clearance was, I don't think anyone would want to life a brand new 100K G Class, I could be wrong though.
It didn't do the last task but still won by 2 points. Plus no one who buys these cars will take it on any terrain like the last task. G won it fair and square because it does the minimum requirement best.
When there is a huge price gap between contenders then it is your wallet that decides the winner. Unfortunately this comparison ended up tie between those two which were near in pricing and thus you should watch it as entertainment.

When you do a comparison of test a group of vehicles , especially off road , having the same make/type of tires evens out the playing field

Well i disagree merc deserved the win and in the last test merc would have walked through it
they didn't show or shot when the Jeep going up on the second to last obstacle when the Merc had its wheels up in the air, I bet the Jeep did not lift at all. This was shamefully biased. on the hill climb Jeep went up with almost no momentum vs the order two who sped up the hill.
Yip very biased towards the Jeep. No run up for climb. On rutted side for drag and clearly won the articulation test only a blind man would see different

The best car challenge cuz it really combined 2 of my favourite cars that i've been confused between it's the Jeep and the Mercedes. It's even than top Gear and with your british accent sir i had to admit that i had a blast watching 22:15 of charisma and power

Don't know about the west, but in Russia people use them for fishing, hunting and offroading trips all the time. Ofcourse there are also poor people who want to look rich, lease them and then are afraid to take them off the tarmac but happens to all the SUV's

Jeep provides skid plates and rock rails to protect the undercarriage. So what you scrape, you’re scraping steel. I’ve never seen a rover newer than 2005 on a trail, and definitely haven’t seen a g wagon.

By the way the G may or may not be able to handle the last test however do you really want to sit with the repair bill especially after paying close to 100k for it anyway since the G doesn't have under armor like the Wrangler

They didn't really do that Rubicon Justice I drive a Land Rover Discovery 2 but I know for a fact down here in Arizona with the Rocky hill climbs we do all the rubicon's with just a size larger tires are down crawl up things with those front-rear lockers and do sway bar disconnects in those solid axles. It does things the defender can't do or at least a Defender can't do as easily. The defender doesn't have the articulation it weighs more and it is higher center of gravity. They're just choosing the Land Rover because they were both speaking with a British accent LOL what would you rather have in the forest yeah but would you rather have rock climbing and doing real manly stuff that Rubicon no question about it. That's why when they show a video of a Defender following some Jeep rubicon's around there all impressed and praising the defender while there's like 20 other Jeeps all doing the same thing easier and no one mentioned how good they're doing because it's expected but let's praise the defender for merely keeping up LOL they need to see some of those videos. Then you see the Jeeps go do other stuff when the cameras are put away and the defender says goodnight and goes back to the hotel for the evening video over
@RONALD R ROOT III lol mate not gonna lie ever the Disco 2's are good vehicles when it comes to offroading nice axle setup and not overly expensive. You can get lockers for them as well and I say this all as I die hard jeep boy 🤣
These tests felt like it didn't do justice for the jeep.
I think g shouldn't be compared to others
Coz in most real offroading you cant use it due to less ground clearance
And I'll go for defender coz it's the only car which is going on road as well as offroad due to its momocoque chassis
These tests also depend on how a person is driving the car not just on a car.
@Ashlee Burell no it’s not. Same driver needed for every test. Timed drag race with the same driver, same driver for the slope test, same start location, etc. The merc was the only one that launched on the maneuverability test too, so it got a quicker time. The Merc also had more momentum from the start on the rocky slope test, Jeep looked like it started with the lowest speed. All the vehicles could probably use less tire pressure too, looks to be on street air pressure. All 3 vehicles need the same driver, start points/speed for certain tests, same launches.. either off idle or boosted launch, same tires and tire pressure.

Cant compete with the all around ground clearance, angles, turning radius, 2 solid axles, and best gear ratios or the jeep. Maybe a 4x4 squared, thats really the only conpetetion
If you wanted a perfect score for each of the cars the best thing to do is have the same person drive each car for each challenge it’s just the best way in my opinion
